Unemployment

globally
regarded as a major social and
economic problem. But first
question that strikes to mind is
whether
the
problem
is
unemployment
or
lack
of
employability? Today the industries
expect new recruits to come to the
corporate world with the proper
balance of aptitude and attitude.
They expect them to be committed,
dedicated, self-disciplined, selfmotivated, show high degree of
learn ability and adaptability.
According to a study by Higher
Education Forum there are gaps
that exist between the expectations
of the employers and skills possessed by the students churned out from educational
institutes. Unfortunately it has been observed that the youth today are educated but
unemployable i.e. they are not job ready in terms of skill sets required in the industries.
The Labour Report states in 2007 about 53% of employed youth suffer from skill
deprivation while only 8% are unemployed.
It is an accepted fact that, large numbers of students produced from the higher educational
institutions are professionally qualified but not employable. Industry as well as academic
leaders and organizations have repeatedly pointed out the urgent need for institutions to
improve students professional readiness along with imparting technical studies.
Of late, there has been a lot of talk in the Indian industry about the employability skillset of
students passing out of engineering colleges, which is found to be quite below the standard
required by the industry. We have found several recruiters complain that, although we are
churning out students by numbers, the quality does not meet the industry expectations.
Compounding this problem is the students lack of awareness about the entire placement
process and as a result is unable to equip themselves well to showcase their potential
before the recruiters. Moreover, the students come from a huge variety of backgrounds and
as a result, there is a great disparity in their ability to convey effectively, the skills they
possess.
Thus, they feel seriously disadvantaged while comparing themselves with their
sophisticated peers. This leads to more low confidence and low self-esteem.
