2. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF ELT IN INDONESIA ?

\

In Indonesia, English has been used as a second language and it also has been

chosen as a language for wider communication in international forum. As a result, the

teaching and learning of a foreign language has been placed in a very important position.
English has been taught in the elementary school as an elective subject since the
implementation of the 1994 Curriculum. In the development of ELT in Indonesia, there
are a lot of problems ranging from the context of learning, the objective of teaching, Even
in some elementary schools, English is offered as an elective subject. However, we have
seen that the proficiency in English of secondary school graduates still creates
disappointment among teachers themselves as well as parents. The unsatisfying quality of
English in Indonesia of course is related to various different variables.
However the teaching of Indonesian as a foreign language still faces so many
hurdles, problems and challenges especially in terms of the material and the teaching
methods. Such as, most of the methods that almost english teachers in Indonesia use are
only focuss on the teachers, its lack of students role. It will be better if student takes
more rules in the process of english teaching.
