Student-teacher: Jaclyn Wisniewski

Date: October 7, 2015

School: Uniondale High School

Period: 1

Class: English 10H

Evaluator: Mr. Lynn Schwartz

Observed Lesson:
This observer had the opportunity to observe Ms. Wisniewskis 1st period English 10 H
class on Wednesday, October 7, 2015. The observed lesson reinforced many of the
previously taught concepts of William Shakespeares Macbeth.
Ms. Wisniewski began class with a brief do now discussion question. (Have you ever
done something for someone and did it because you thought you were doing the right
thing?) Students shared their responses to this discussion question.
Following the brief discussion, Ms. Wisniewski explained the lesson objective for the
period. She indicated that students would be placed in groups of three or four and that
each group would be asked to respond to a specific event in Macbeth and argue that this
event was both fair and foul. (Using the game of baseball as a reference point, Ms.
Wisniewski explained the concepts of fair and foul.) Students were given approximately
fifteen minutes to complete this task.
Once students had completed their work and wrote their responses on a teacher made
paper baseball, they placed their baseballs on a teacher constructed baseball diamond in
either fair or foul territory. Each group was then asked to explain their event to the class
and to argue why this event was both fair and foul. The reporting of student work took
approximately ten minutes.
With a few minutes remaining in class, Ms. Wisniewski collected all the materials and
explained the extra credit homework assignment to the students.
The class was dismissed at the bell.
Commendations:
1. The lesson, as designed, aligned nicely to the Common Core Standards.
2. The lesson objective was articulated at the beginning of the period.
3. The do now activity immediately engaged students in the lesson.
4. Prior learning was reinforced.

5. Ms. Wisniewski has established very positive relationships with her students. She
easily relates to them, and they in turn, comply with all teacher requests and
directives.
6. Students were engaged in learning activities until the dismissal bell.
7. Participation was high as all students worked in their groups and shared the
results of their work with their peers.
Recommendations:
1. Remember to conclude each class with a closure activity. Closure provides the
teacher with good evaluative information about the lesson and prepares students
for the following days class.
2. When monitoring student progress during group work, please make efforts to
check in with all groups as they work on the assigned task. As discussed
during the post conference, you did not touch base with two of the nine groups
during the group activity.
3. Please be sure to provide students with a rationale for the lesson. Please consider
employing some of the strategies we discussed regarding rationale so that students
understand the purpose of the lesson.
This evaluator is very pleased with Ms. Wisniewskis work. She is obviously passionate
about teaching and is working very hard to provide her students with interesting and
challenging lessons.
