Study # 1: The Journal of Nutrition


The first study is from The Journal of Nutrition where the studies of medium
chain fatty acids (MCFAs) are investigated by researchers.
They found that these MCFAs in coconut oil can boost your metabolism and
increase your energy. They also decrease in food consumption because they
make you feel full longer therefore help promote weight loss.
The authors of this study highly recommend using oils that contain MCFAs,
such as coconut oil, as a tool to drop extra abdominal fat, manage a healthy
weight, and even as a way to treat obesity.
From the literature reviewed, they concluded that conclude that MCT
(medium-chain triglycerides) increase energy expenditure, may result in faster
satiety and facilitate weight control when included in the diet as a replacement
for fats containing LCT (long-chain triglycerides).

discovered that high concentration
of MCFAs are found in virgin
coconut oil (VCO) which in the study had shown beneficial effect in reduction
of waist circumference.

Study #3: The Journal of Lipids


The third study is also the most
fascinating study which was published in
the Journal of Lipids in 2009.
This clinical trial involved 40 women aged
between 20-40 years old. These women
were divided into 2 groups S and C. Group
S consumed 30 mL (2tbsp) of soy bean oil
daily and group C consumed 30 mL
(2tbsp) of coconut oil daily as well.
This trial happened over a 12-week
period and during this time all of these
women were to follow a balanced
hypocaloric diet and to walk for 50 min
per day.
Results showed that the group that consumed the coconut oil had a decrease
in abdominal fat, while the soybean oil group actually showed increases in
belly fat. Furthermore, they concluded that dietetic supplementation with
coconut oil does not cause dyslipidemia and seems to promote a reduction in
abdominal obesity.

Study #4: The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition


The fourth study is from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition where they
aimed to determine whether consumption of MCT oil improves body weight
and fat loss compared with olive oil when consumed as part of a weight-loss
program.
Forty-nine overweight men and women, aged 19-50 years old, consumed
either 18-24 g/d of MCT oil or olive oil as part of a weight-loss program for 16
weeks. Subjects received weekly group weight-loss counseling and their body
weight and waist circumference were measured weekly.
The study concluded that consumption of MCT oil as part of a weight-loss plan
improves weight loss compared with olive oil and can thus be successfully
included in a weight-loss diet. Small changes in the quality of fat intake can
therefore be useful to enhance weight loss.
Study #5. The International Journal of Obesity
In the International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders,
researchers studied the effects of long-term consumption of medium chain
(MCT) versus long chain triglycerides (LCT) on energy expenditure (EE),
substrate oxidation and body composition with 17 healthy obese women
participated in this randomized, crossover inpatient trial.
These results show that long-term consumption of MCT enhances EE and fat
oxidation in obese women, when compared to LCT consumption. Researchers
concluded that substitution of MCT for LCT in a targeted energy balance diet
may prevent long-term weight gain via increased EE.

Study #6. The Obesity Research


Similar to study #5, this study was to compare
the effects of diets rich in medium-chain
triglycerides (MCTs) or long-chain triglycerides
(LCTs)

on

body

composition,

energy

expenditure, substrate oxidation, subjective


appetite, and ad libitum energy intake in
twenty-four healthy, overweight men with body
mass indexes between 25 and 31 kg/m(2) consumed diets rich in MCT or LCT
for 28 days each in a crossover randomized controlled trial.
Consumption of a diet rich in MCTs results in greater loss of upper body
adipose tissue compared with LCTs, perhaps due to increased energy
expenditure and fat oxidation observed with MCT intake. Thus, MCTs may be
considered as agents that aid in the prevention of obesity or potentially
stimulate weight loss.
