Following an unsuccessful attempt to acquire

$25,000 from the town thur far, Waldo Munoz approached Wildrose MLA Derek Fildebrandt to help
organize an emergency pledge drive, to raise the
necessary funds and inch the vision of a Strathmore
drop-in centre closer to reality.
Munoz had been in discussions with the Harvest
Healing Centre Church regarding setting up a dropin centre within the facilities. However, to qualify for
insurance coverage, the building, which hasnt been
fully completed yet, needs to meet certain requirements, including building separate bathrooms for
males and females. In order to ensure the requirements are met and get the drop-in centre up and
running, an estimated $25,000 is required.
The last little while, outside of my shop, I find
people sleeping there all the time, said Waldo Munoz, owner of Waldo Imaging, as well as the president of the Chamber of Commerce in Strathmore.
The ball is starting to roll, but what we are afraid of
is once Christmas passes, people are going to forget
about this stuff. Right now its touching everybodys
hearts.
Furthermore, $125,000 would be needed to hire
a full-time staff member a mental health professional and keep operations running for a full year.
According to Munoz, the churchs insurance would
not allow individuals to stay overnight.
We need $25,000 just to get it up and running as
it is, and then insurance will insure us, without that
the insurance will not look at us, he said. I just
wanted to help, but now things are starting to take
off. It feels good to do something for the community, because the community has been pretty good
to me.
Community members have already dropped off
food items, and even donated a pig. If the Harvest
Healing Centre Church facility works out, three large
rooms could accommodate a total of 12 people, and
even more through the use of bunk-beds. Regardless
of the outcome, the church will forge ahead with
a soft opening of a soup kitchen on Jan. 2. It will
feature soup, sandwich, a cup of coffee and a scone,
every Saturday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
Until we have the funds in place we cant go forward, because we dont have the money to do it,
said Susan Ruzek, a member of the church who will
help run the soup kitchen.
The soup kitchen is going ahead regardless of
whether or not the drop-in centre goes ahead. I
think there is a demand for this, and this is based
on somewhere between 50 to 75 families come in to
get bread a week. And thats telling me its a demand
and its a growing demand.

Langdon pulls together for Brooklyn

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

When four-year-old Brooklyn visited
her Langdon preschool on Dec. 9, her
teachers noticed she was clingy and
cuddly.
Confiding in the owner of the Stepping Stones Preschool, Lori CaronKluppelberg, the perceptive youngster
informed her that her father had been
crying because her mother hadnt come
home the night before.
While the preschool made sure
Brooklyns day was as normal as possible, Rob Hamilton explained to his
daughter that same night that her
mother wont be coming home at all.
Bonita Hamilton lost her life suddenly on Dec. 8 when her vehicle veered
off the road and into a property. Since
then the community of Langdon has
already raised nearly $30,000 through
the Bonita Hamilton (Gobeil) Go Fund
Me page, to supplement some of Bonitas income and help the family Rob,
Brooklyn, and Bonitas step-daughter
Sam, with some of the financial burden.
Wanting to help further, the Stepping
Stones Preschool now set up a trust
fund for Brooklyn to ensure her education in the future.
We thought the entire town could
take part and feel like theyve done
something while but not intrude on the
family, Caron-Kluppelberg said. The
entire town is just completely broken
up about it. The Go Fund Me, thats for
dad directly to help with finances
(this) is specifically for Brooklyn and
her education. Id like to continue adding as a preschool to this fund yearly

until shes 16. As long as were in business were going to continue to donate
to it.
According to Caron-Kluppelberg, the
trust fund will remain open while the
family resides in Langdon. If the family
does leave the community, she added,
the account would be closed and the
money given to the family.
Forty-year-old Bonita had left work
early on Dec. 8 when she didnt feel
well.
While family and friends continue
to wonder what caused the incident,
Langdon is also mourning the loss of a
contributing member of their community.
She was a terrific lady, and would
have befriended anyone, said Kristie Mackie who has known Bonita for
three years and took part in the same
book club. She was kind and very
smart and someone who was easy to
talk to. She will be more than missed
and our hearts are broken for her family. The community has already rallied
around the family, but the trust fund is
just another way to continue to support
the family, and in particular Brooklyn.
Mackie added that Bonita was always
lending a hand, whether by joining the
parent committee, playing a large part
in organizing the Christmas party at the
preschool, or volunteering in the community to organize major fundraising
events.
She was a key organizer in our parent committee, she was a volunteer,
and she just helped put together our
childrens Christmas party less than a
week before this happened, CaronKluppelberg said. She was a huge con-

Money needed drop-in centre in town

Continued from Page 1

After Munoz approached town council
with the issue, council said they wanted
to see him coordinate with services in
Strathmore and asked him to work with
town administration to provide more
detail. He was also urged to come back
before council at a later date. Munoz
said a business plan is currently in the
works. However, in hopes of moving the
project forward quickly as the weather
turns colder, Munoz approached Wildrose Strathmore-Brooks MLA Derek
Fildebrandt to help with the dilemma.
In turn, Fildebrandt started setting up

an emergency pledge drive at his office

to take donations and food items.
Growing communities also come
with growing social problems, said Wildrose MLA Derek Fildebrandt. Were
trying to make it a full-blown drop-in
centre. Were going to run an emergency pledge drive out of my office, but
youre trying to work your way through
a big bureaucracy, and its a slow-moving beast.
Harvest Healing Centre Church representatives were scheduled to appear before council to discuss the issue on Dec.
16. To make a donation to the project

There are two main types of calcium

supplements used today. Calcium carbonate is
less expensive and depends on stomach acid for
best absorption. Take these with meals. Calcium
citrate, the more expensive form, is absorbed well
when taken with or without food.
Keep a list of all the medications you take
with you at all times. This list should contain
all prescribed medications, non prescription
medications and herbal products. Many people
dont include vitamins and herbal products on
this list but they can be important in assessing
your health.
Side effects can happen with medications. Most
are minor and self-limiting. Examples include
nausea, drowsiness and skin rashes. Side effects
can happen when certain drugs are mixed with
others. Alcohol is a good example of the other
drug. As your pharmacists, we will inform you

Good habits to cultivate for 2016 include taking

New Blood dancer performs

her grandparents story
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Alayiah
Wolfchild,
a
17-year-old student at Strathmore High School (SHS), has
been performing in the New
Blood dance show since the
show began a year ago.
Directed
by
Deanne
Bertsch, and based on Peter Gabriels music by the
same title, New Blood was
first performed at SHS in
the fall of 2014. Then the
cast was invited to perform
on the Siksika First Nation,
and from there, to nine more
venues and communities
around southern Alberta.
The most recent performances was at Ernest Manning High School in Calgary
on Dec. 10, as part of the
schools Culture Day.
New Blood features the
story of Blackfoot Chief Vincent Yellow Old Womans
residential school experience, and represents the
story of all former residential students, including Wolfchilds own grandparents.
Wolfchild and her castmates
are telling a story thats too
painful for many of them to
share.
Its a big honor because it
just means that our story, my
grandparents stories, are being told, Wolfchild said.
It was an especially great
honor when her grandparents were in the audience.
Just seeing them there, it

15122MF0

touched me because I saw

myself in them, she said. I
tried to put myself in their
shoes when they were in
residential schools.
Wolfchilds father, Eddi
Wolfchild, has also been performing in New Blood since
the show began, playing the
father whose son goes to
residential school.
The show has brought my
dad and I closer, Wolfchild
said. It means a lot to him,
because his parents were
both in residential schools.
Her dad is also glad, she
said, to see non-aboriginal
and aboriginal students performing together, putting
aside their differences and
building friendships.
New Blood continues to
receive performance invitations.
Were always listening to
Peter Gabriel (music) and
talking about how much
further the show will go,
Wolfchild said. I want to
welcome (people) to the
show, (for them) to know
what happened in residential schools.
When she considers the
abuse her grandparents suffered, she said, just imagining my two little sisters
going to school in fear, it
breaks my heart.
You can follow performances and book tickets on
the New Blood Facebook
page or at newbloodthedanceshow.com.

New board elected

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

The Strathmore and District Agricultural Society bid
adieu to some of its board
members, including president Brad Walls, and welcomed five individuals to
the positions, after elections
took place on Dec. 14.
Among those newly elected
was president-elect Dennis
McNeill, a long-time member,
former president, and last
terms vice-president.
McNeill, whos also a
Strathmore Lions Club member, has been a member with
the society for over 35 years.
When fhe was first elected
as president in 1992, the societys prime focus rested on
building the grandstands.
Since then, the Strathmore
and District Agricultural Society has grown in events,
facilities, and in attendance.
While their signature event,
the Strathmore Stampede,
also received some adjustments, in the form of entertainment, a wine cellar,
and the use of the Remuda
Centre a multi-use facility
that aided with admissions
the society is working diligently to expand its presence
throughout the year.
With an expected five-year
plan focused on additions
and renovations to facilities,
funding, and proper direction for management, McNeill
is looking forward to create
a more year-round presence
without the dependence on
one event Strathmore Stampede. However, for McNeill,
it was the societys involvement with the 29 user groups
including minor ball, slow
pitch, archery, and 4-H that
kept him coming back year
after year.

Its been discovered that

agricultural societies for every dollar in grants or other
input from towns and government, agricultural societies turn that into four dollars
by hosting events, McNeill
said.
Were building experiences for people. They come,
theyve never seen a rodeo,
theyve never seen what we
do in a small town, and we
change peoples lives because of it. Its exciting.
After two years as president, Brad Walls, who is also
a local councillor, decided
against seeking re-election,
and referred to his terms
as both challenging and rewarding. While he acknowledged the staff and board for
helping make his term exceptional, he is confident in
his former right-handmans
abilities.
The Ag Society is in exceptionally good hands right
now and I want to focus on
some other initiatives I spearheaded, said Walls. Dennis
is one of the most hardworking individuals I know. He
puts more time into the park
than I think half the staff do.
I see him doing great things
for the society.
Some highlights from the
society include their partnership with the Celebration of
Lights, the outdoor rink, and
the Open Farm Days.
Also elected on Dec. 14,
were Gwen Schneider as a
board member, Cara Burne
as vice president, and Sheila
Crispin as secretary-treasurer
a position formerly held by
Pascal Del Guercio to make
up the 12-member board.
Both Walls and McNeill
praised the team for their efforts in making the initiatives
a success.

Symbiotic EnviroTek look for countys letter of intent

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Symbiotic EnviroTek members have
been working with Wheatland County
for the last year to get the go-ahead for
the first pilot project wastewater treatment solution to replace the septic field
that has failed in Rosebud.
On Dec. 1 during the Wheatland County regular council meeting, the company
visited the chambers to provide an update.
The company provided a microalgae
wastewater treatment solution that also
produces algal biomass that can be sold

for a number of different applications

including food and non-food products.
Liquid wastes that have different components of nutrient streams can grow algae
to be sold and used for an input to natural health products, animal feed, or bio
industrial products.
Terrific progress has been made on
this project, said Elizabeth Huculak,
consultant for Symbiotic EnviroTek. We
knew that Rosebud has a problem and
weve been working to apply the microalgae production system as wastewater
treatment system for them.
Huculak was a part of a committee
that did a feasibility study in 2012 with

Sustainability Resources to look at alternatives for ecological treatment. At that

time, Wheatland County had identified
five communities within the county that
had wastewater issues and/or economic
development issues.
Consequently we met with members
of Rosebud and evaluated the situation
and they rose to the top of the pile in
communities most ready to take on a
project like this, said Huculak.
If the county were to pass the motion
for the company to do this, Symbiotic
must follow certain Alberta Environment
and Parks criteria, including the Teflon
water quality where they did trial runs
over the summer.
Weve been using the Rosebud wastewater to grow algae and prove that the
discharge water quality meets the standards that the county needs and will
qualify for the Alberta Environment water standards, said Huculak. That work
has now been completed and it puts us in
a position now to get the approval from
council to proceed with this project.
However, Wheatland County gave
them a conditional approval to move
forward on the project because they had
not received the final draft of the letter of

intent, which outlines the process Symbiotic EnviroTek has to follow.

The guidelines include submitting a
registration under the code of practice
to Alberta Environment to register it as
a facility, a service agreement with the
county and an implementation of site
preparation work that the county will do
in readiness for deployment of the field
for next spring.
The cost of the whole field will come
to $6 million with the wastewater coming
to $3 million.
Wheatland County Councilor Ben Armstrong said he would like to see how this
project operates before considering having it spread around the county.
It looks like its a workable process,
said Armstrong. Its different and I know
the system we had at Rosebud was starting to fail a little bit. We had to do something. These new initiatives come along
and it was a good chance to try something different.
He added that its less of a carbon footprint than a lagoon system.
The site preparation will start as soon
as the ground thaws and go until May
with the expectation of deploying the
plant beginning in June.

Volunteers shine
The Junior Achievement SE Prairie Region showed their appreciation to their volunteers on Dec. 10.
The event received donations from Strathmore Station, M&M Meats, Field Stone Wines, and Tinas No

families spoke.
Were listening.
The Government of Alberta has amended
Bill 6 to respond to farm families concerns.
Amendments to the Enhanced Protection for Farm and Ranch Workers
Act will assure farming families of their ability to pass on traditions to their
kids: the next generation of producers. Thats how this province was built.
The new legislation will not affect:
15122DG1

purely family-owned and operated farm and ranch operations,

even if family members are paid,

families ability to teach their children about farming and

farming traditions,

kids participation in 4-H programs, or

neighbours who volunteer to help each other out.

The new Act will reect legislation in other provinces that:

protects the safety of waged workers and helps prevent

workplace accidents, and

compensates waged workers, or those workers families,

in case of disabling injury or death on the job.

Family farms continue to ourish in all other provinces with similar

legislation. Ours will too.

24-hour support only a dial away

JENNIFER PAGE
Pregnancy Care Centre Program Coordinator

Have you ever wondered whom to call, at any
time of day, with your questions and concerns?
The Pregnancy Care Centre is here to help.
Finding out she was pregnant, Jenica talked to
her boyfriend and they decided to parent. They
knew it would not be easy, as they had just met
about a couple of months ago, but they were both
excited about the possibility of becoming a family
and decided to put their efforts into making their
relationship work while preparing to be parents.
Their excitement changed after Jenica told her
parents. Suddenly, the reality of her decision became clear. Shed have to quit smoking, drinking,
partying on the weekends, and would need to
make healthier decisions for herself and her baby.
She and her boyfriend would have to find employment with adequate pay and benefits, and put
significant effort into life-skill development and financial awareness. Once her parents laid out their
expectations what they would, and would not
do the excitement took a turn toward panic.
Compounded by these difficult realities was the
complicated nature of her relationship with her
boyfriend. Though she felt that there was an instant connection, the honeymoon phase was coming to an abrupt halt. They not only had to make
decisions about the nature of their relationship,
but they also had to learn how to communicate
about their needs as well as the needs of the developing baby. They soon realized they had so
much to learn about each other and were not sure

what to do about their relationship. Thats when

Jenica found the Pregnancy Care Centre.
Our 24-hour helpline is available for you in
these types of situations. With the support of
trained, dedicated volunteers providing information over the phone at any time of the day, we
offer care and support to anyone who has questions or concerns, is feeling worried or anxious, or
simply needs to hear a friendly voice. We are here
to come alongside as they face difficult situations.
Many conversations will end with a follow-up
appointment for on-going support and more indepth care. At the Pregnancy Care Centre, Jenicas
peer-counsellor helped her navigate some of the
concerns she had about being a mother. Jenica
was able to get connected with prenatal help, lifeskills and budgeting classes, and also to discuss
her deep-seated negative beliefs about herself.
Her parents were able to receive some muchneeded support surrounding their concerns for
their daughter. Eventually, the peer-counsellors
involved were able to provide mediation and
support for both the family and the boyfriend involved.
There is still much work that Jenica and her
boyfriend have to do to prepare for the coming
baby, but they are both making strides toward becoming the best parents they can be. At the Pregnancy Care Centre, we love helping people like
Jenica discover their values and abilities and work
toward their full potential.
If you, or someone you know, would benefit
from our services, please do not hesitate to call or

Blue Christmas
PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
This is not my typical column. Normally, I try to
keep it light, as everyone has their own pain. No one
needs to have mine added to theirs. However, this
Christmas is a lot more blue for the Fules, as two of
our family have been hit, and hit hard. We all have
our own demons, pains, and weaknesses, and we all
struggle to find happiness in our lives.
For some reason, that happiness was elusive to
Debs cousin. His family went through many triumphs
and many struggles. Many people turn to things to
bring them happiness, even if its fleeting and cant
be maintained. He was a good man, who fell prey
to alcohol. This had caused him to become homeless
for awhile, and the family worried for him. Yet for 10
years, he fought off, and defeated the power of drink,
with the help of a much loved woman.
The tragedy began with her own suffering and defeat by cancer. That loss was sad enough, but it also
became the catalyst for Dan to begin his second decline. No one can tell people how to deal with their
grief, and his family struggled as he unraveled. The
man who had defeated alcohol, turned his life around,
and built a solid life, had it all taken by grief and a return to drinking. Before long, he was homeless again
in Calgary. His father and sister braved the downtown
streets to find him, and begged him to come home
that theyd help him, but he could not do it. In fact, he
agreed and was taken by his father to a centre to help
him. However, as soon as his father left, Dan went out
the back, never to return.
This fall, Dan died on the streets of Calgary. He died
alone, and I hope he had no fear or suffering. He was
a good man, who was brought down by the loss of
someone very close to him. He left behind a father,
two sisters, a son, and many family and friends. He
will never have a Christmas again, and his grown son
has to make sense of this horrible tragedy. My hope is
that in his last moments, Dan knew how many people
cared for him. Im sure there are many other homeless

people who have their own tales of loss, and of things

that crushed their hopes.
My favorite uncle is dying. He was my late moms
youngest brother, and my parents helped him come
to Canada, get a job, a drivers license, a car, and they
even taught him English! If youre a long time reader,
then you know hes the one that my late mom played
matchmaker for! She felt that my aunt was the best girl
for him, and she threw out all the letters from one girl
she didnt approve of, and made sure Poldi got Veras!
Now, 54 years, three daughters, two sons in law, and
six grandchildren later, here we are for his last months
or even weeks. Hes agitated, scared, and he wants
to go home. Hes had to have restraints placed on his
wrists and ankles, and yesterday they found him in
another room after hed fallen. Today, I had to remind
him who I was. The young uncle, the one who was
so cool to us nephews, is now trapped in a weakening body. Weve been told there is no hope that its
spread too far, and too fast. There can be no victory
here our family is facing the long goodbye.
I hope that these last times I spend with my uncle
give him ease from his worries and pain. I hope that
our whole family has a chance to share all our love
with him, and for each other. My Christmas wish for
my favorite uncle is peace, no fear, and a painless
passing.
I hope you and your families have a wonderful
and loving Christmas. Hug someone you havent in
a while, tell someone you love him or her, remember
all our lost ones, and pray for those who are suffering
in sickness. Ill be praying for a lost soul who tried so
hard to beat his demons, for his family who couldnt
save him, and for my favorite uncle. God bless you
all.

Bill 6 shows Albertans can fight back

DEREK FILDEBRANDT
Strathmore-Brooks MLA

The recent pushback from Albertans against their government over Bill 6 shows that even against the odds, the people
of our province have the ability to stand up for themselves
when their backs are up against the wall.
People make mistakes, and governments are made up of
people, so governments are bound to make mistakes. What
matters is how we deal with and learn from those mistakes.
Ralph Klein was famous for regularly making mistakes, but
even more so for his genuine apologies.
By contrast, the NDP made a colossal mistake with Bill 6,

the Week

but just ploughed ahead with it, critics be damned.

The original form of Bill 6 would have allowed
OH&S bureaucrats to come onto peoples private,
residential property without a warrant to ensure
that everything met government regulations. The
original Bill 6 would have required that unpaid
farm kids would have to be insured under the
Workers Compensation Board.
Farmers and ranchers immediately began to ask
serious questions of the government and express
worry that the bill was being rushed through the
legislature without any consultation. These farmers and ranchers were immediately brushed off
by the premier as extremists who were opposed
to farm safety.
Right after the bill was tabled in the legislature,
virtually every provincial media outlet endorsed
Bill 6 before reading it; after all, who was opposed to farm safety?
Almost immediately, my offices in Strathmore,
Brooks and in Edmonton were all swamped by
e-mails and phone calls from constituents who
wanted me to fight Bill 6 on their behalf. It became quickly apparent that Bill 6 did much more
than was advertised by the government.
The Wildrose Caucus and I quickly understood
that even if the bill was popular with the media
and (for the time being) in the big cities, it was the
right thing to fight it.
We were not opposed to legislation that improved farm safety, but we were opposed to any
bill that had not consulted with the people it affected most: farmers and ranchers.
Farmers came out to rallies in Lethbridge, Red
Deer, Medicine Hat and Edmonton by the thousands. They had a simple message to the government: Listen!
The NDP scrambled to hold a few last minute
town-hall meetings where a minister or bureaucrat would explain how the legislation would
have to be complied with. They were not intended to be a forum of farmers and ranchers to tell
the government what the legislation should look
like.
The NDP initially refused to hold any town halls
whatsoever in our constituency of StrathmoreBrooks, despite being one of the most agriculture
intensive constituencies in the entire country.
Between 500 and 600 constituents came out to
the Bassano town hall meeting to discuss Bill 6
with me and several other Wildrose MLAs who
also attended. To his credit, the Minister of Agri-

culture, Oneil Carlier also attended. The message

from constituents to the minister was clear: Kill
Bill 6.
Albertans in Calgary and Edmonton began to
stand with us against an attack on the family farm,
and the refusal of the government to listen to reason.
Unlike many in our government, the majority of
Albertans know and appreciate the cultural values
of farm life and the history of this province are
tightly weaved together.
Once the NDP made clear that it would not put
the legislation on hold until the spring in order
to consult, my Wildrose colleagues and I decided
to fight the bill with every tool at our disposal.
In short, that meant that we debated the bill exhaustively, often going well into the early hours
of the morning in the legislature, and providing
proactive amendments to have the bill sent back
to committee.
Despite condemning the practice as extremely
undemocratic while they were in opposition, the
NDP quickly invoked debate closure, which
more a less just shuts down the legislature and
automatically passes the bill. We did everything
legal within our means to delay the bill, but in the
end, the NDP rammed it through.
Political pressure on the NDP was strong
enough however to force them to concede some
amendments, but not to slow the bill down and
consult with farmers and ranchers first. Still, those
amendments did significantly water down the bill
from its original form. Namely: the bill will no longer require family members from having mandatory WCB coverage, and the bill no longer allows
OH&S bureaucrats into your home to conduct inspections without a warrant.
There are still huge problems with the bill, and
if Albertans elect a Wildrose government in the
future, I am committed to thoroughly reviewing
the legislation. But in the end, Albertans pushed
back against their government, and to some degree, won.
I truly hope that the premier and the NDP have
learned a lesson about consulting with Albertans
first and when to put the brakes on something
that isnt well thought out first; but if they have
not, you can count on the Wildrose to remind
them again.
(Derek Fildebrandt is MLA for StrathmoreBrooks, the Wildrose Shadow Minister of Finance
and Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee.)

Strathmore opens doors to better living

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Shortly after reaching their 40s, Leigh
and Nicole Cordes noticed a change in
their lifestyle and weight, and activities
that once seemed effortless quickly became a struggle. In an effort to regain
their active way of life, the couple soon
placed their diet under the microscope.
With a background in agriculture, a nutritionist education, and partnerships
with local and Alberta-based producers, the Cordes decided to answer the
demand from Strathmore residents to
open a market and deli dedicated to
providing the community with healthconscious, nutrient-rich foods.
That was kind of the evolution for
us, or the transition, as we started to get
into our 40s, my weight was going up
every year and I couldnt ski, I couldnt
bike, I couldnt do those things that I
really wanted to do at the age I was at,
said Leigh Cordes, co-owner of Back to
Good Market and Deli.
I found that my physical health was
starting to deteriorate. So we started to
look at our diet. I tried to do my own
grocery shopping and found there was
so much in the store that I wasnt even
using. That was part of where we started to come from.
Back to Good Market and Deli opened
its doors on Nov. 2, stocking items for
which Strathmore residents were previously required to shop in Calgary. The
business and its staff, which also includes another nutritionist and a local
cook, cater to specific individuals and
their health concerns, including glutenfree, dairy-free, and vegetarian options,
no MSG, and alter their recipes to substitute coconut sugar, natural honey, or
maple syrup to replace refined sugars.
In partnership with numerous Alberta
farmers and producers, such as Poplar
Bluff and Organic Matters, the owners
are not only supporting local businesses, but are reflecting on their own former farming experiences.
What got me interested in this, was
when we used to farm, I always wanted
to have more value added products, because a loaf of bread, you take a little
bit of wheat and you figure that back to
what the farmer actually gets for that
wheat, and its such a huge mark-up,
Leigh said. One of the other important
factors too, is to have an outlet for local producers to sell their product. For
them to get into the big grocery stores
is sometimes something the stores

wont even look at because

its too small. Its a good way
to create an economy in our
own community. Its quite
neat how many little things
you can find once you start
looking.
While Back to Good Market and Deli is not intended
to grow into a grocery store,
the move of the Calgary Coop to the highway inspired
the Cordes family, whose
two teenage children also
help out in the store, to set
up shop downtown and fill
some of that void.
They dont have to run
to the city, and for me, Im
a believer in eating healthy
and I just think its important to eat healthy yourself
and teach your kids to eat
healthy, said Nicole Cordes,
co-owner and a certified nutritionist, who visits the local operations on how their

food is produced.
We knew that the Co-op
was moving, and we knew
that a lot of people were upset that there wasnt going
to be any sort of a market
down here. Nowhere to go
for a cup of coffee, or a bowl
of soup. So for us it would
be nice to provide that for
people down here.
Although the business is
still in its infancy, the Cordes
are already envisioning a sitting area in the summer with
baskets showcasing various
fresh produce for sale, are
planning on offering more
grab-and-go items, and in
the future plan on expanding their greenhouse to grow
herbicide-free and pesticidefree produce. For information on the menu, it is posted
daily on the Back to Good
Whole Foods Market and
Deli Facebook page.

This year, more than any other year,
Ive found it a challenge to try to create a sense of community spirit and
wellbeing, LaVerne Erickson, founder
of Rosebud School of the Arts told me,
when we sat down to discuss the year
2015.
That, he said, is primarily because all
levels of government have increased
the number and complexity of their
regulations.
In June, Erickson organized a volunteer work bee to build a community
picnic shelter.
That was a big challenge, to get it
through the regulatory approvals, he
said.
And hes since learned that, for future
projects on county land, all volunteers
will need to be fully trained, wearing
steel-toed boots, harnesses and hard
hats, whereas, we as a group of volun-

teers just got out there and built something.

The Rosebud community is also coping with government regulations as
they work to replace their wastewater
system, which was to be finished this
June. Right now, a pumper truck comes
to Rosebud two or three times daily to
collect sewage.
That has been slowed down due to
what they call due process, Erickson
said. You think youve got over one
hurdle and you run into another.
In the slowness of that process, Erickson said, he knows Wheatland County
is simply coping with the regulations
brought down by higher levels of government. And, as Albertas largest cities
lobby for more autonomy, rural communities may be brought under the cities municipal management. If that happens, Erickson says, someone warned
him, If you think its hard to put in
a housing development or start a business in a little place like Rosebud now,

just wait for two years. Much of what

we want to accomplish in this community will come to a standstill.
The economic downturn and international conflict also weigh on Erickson,
and added to that, Weve had some
serious losses in our community with
sudden deaths and key people that
were very, very helpful in keeping the
community vibrant.
Yet, as the community deals with
challenges, especially with government
requirements, Erickson encourages fellow residents.
Lets pray for people ... lets be very
considerate of these peoples hearts
and souls ... lets make friends with
them, try to help them with their job.
Theyre carrying a burden like we are,
trying to implement all these regulations, he said. Do unto others as you
would have them do unto you. Its such
a fundamental rule if were going to
build a good community.
At a recent prayer breakfast, when
people were discouraged about Bill 6,
Erickson said, I spoke up and I said,
weve been through very troubled
times in the past. Weve been through
world wars and things. The tools that
we have at hand right now, we might
not feel that those tools are adequate
to deal with the present situation. But
Gods built into us a creative spirit. If
we focus on the problem, and let it
overwhelm us, well collapse. ... If we
try to think of some creative solutions,
then maybe well find a way through.
He finds many rewards for that persistent, creative spirit. The new picnic
shelter is enjoyed by Rosebud residents
and visitors, even in December.
And Erickson enjoys just going out
in an evening in Rosebud and hearing
all the laughter and the happy voices
and the kids down there fighting on the
baseball diamond, he said. Ill go out
on an evening and Ill smell campfire
smoke and Ill hear people singing, and
thats always a joy.

All her life, Kelli Cran spent her life
taking care of other people. For years,
the 51-year-old mother of two looked
after seniors and those with disabilities
in Strathmore. But in late October, Cran
was told the tables had turned and she
would need to fight for her own life a
difficult task for the family where an
accident and layoffs has left the unit
without health benefits.
While Cran was fighting a bout with
pneumonia a few months ago, doctors
finally proceeded with tests and scans
that revealed the Strathmore local suffered from inoperable Stage 3 lung
cancer. While her husband was laid off
from the Global Training Centre four
months ago, Cran was on long-term
disability following a knee surgery.
With no health benefits, mounting bills,
and Christmas around the corner, other
family members and friends are hoping to raise funds to lessen the financial
burden and reduce some accumulated
stress.
Shes one of the hardest working ladies I know, and she would give you
the shirt off her back, said Holly Robinson, Crans sister who set up a Go
Fund Me page.
All I know is the doctor said get
your affairs in order. Shes so stressed.

Shes up and down and all over the

place. Shes worried about the bills and
groceries and Christmas and the kids.
Were working on staying positive, but
I cant comprehend laying in bed at
night wondering if youre going to live
for six months or eight months. I cant
personally even go there.
The family, which includes her
13-year-old daughter and 12-year-old
son, is now faced with daily trips to
Calgary for chemotherapy and radiation treatments, added travel expenses,
and necessary drug payments. Already
working two jobs and driving Cran to
doctor appointments, Robinson was encouraged to set up a Go Fund Me page
to raise $10,000 to help her sister and
family out over the next two months. In
turn, if the goal is met, Robinson will
shave her head and post the photos.
Shes going to lose her hair which
shes never cut in 51 years, Robinson
said. Shes going to talk to the chemo
guy, and if its the type of chemo thats
going to make her lose her hair, shes
going to donate 12 inches to Locks of
Love, and its just going to kill her. So
I started a Go Fund for her, and if we
raise $10,000 I will shave my head.
While the fund hasnt gained much
traction yet, it has already amounted
to $2,400 at press time. To donate, visit

Alberta Environment
approves Lakes of
Muirfield pipeline
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

A year-long headache ended on Dec.
1 for Lakes of Muirfield residents as
Alberta Environment and Parks finally
signed off on the application to begin
a pipeline from Lakes of Muirfield to
Cattlelands.
The decision came after wastewater
was being transported by truck out of
Lakes of Muirfield to a nearby waste
transfer site; however, the residents
had to pay for the transportation up
to $500 per month in wastewater fees.
An application was sent in on Dec.
4, 2014 for a pipeline to be built but
Alberta Environment deemed it incomplete. It took a year to get more information to complete the application
and get the approval.
On Dec. 1, 2015 the papers were
signed with the registration being followed under the code of practice for
Wastewater Systems using a Wastewater Lagoon.
The proponent was required to follow the process legislated under the
Environmental Protection Act and Enhancement Act, said Jamie Hanlon,
communication specialist for AB Environment and Parks.
Construction could not begin until the Environmental Protection and
Enhancement Act registration was issued, and the project was required to
be constructed as identified in the application. As well, excavated soils were
to be separated and backfilled in their
soil appropriate horizons.
Hanlon said any pipeline crossings

of the watercourses, which is an artificial water channel, needed to be

considered under a Water Act Code of
Practice. Also, all wetlands crossings
are to be directionally drilled beneath
the wetlands and must meet the code
of practice for pipeline and telecommunication lines crossing a body of
water.
At the Dec. 8 Wheatland County
council meeting, a public hearing was
held for Lakes of Muirfield residents to
speak to council about changes to the
Bylaw 2015-39.
The bylaw has to do with the wastewater issue that Lakes of Muirfield is
dealing with and states that development, including single family homes,
would require a developing permit and
in turn need a wastewater solution.
This bylaw is in place to stop development until there is a wastewater
solution, said Hugh Ham, who was
representing the Lakes of Muirfield
residents from Municipal Counsellors.
Lakes of Muirfield resident Scott
Kolewaski, who was an original owner in the area made his opinion well
known that the county could not veto
development.
We can not allow the county to stop
development, you can not paralyze us
as residents, he said.
We need your help, dont stop, itll
kill us.
Councillor Ben Armstrong said that
the county wanted to see the developments done properly and as a result
Wheatland County has put the bylaws
public hearing into recess until another meeting is scheduled.

Mantles adorned with garland and other

holiday trinkets make fireplaces come alive for
Christmas. That magic is only enhanced by
hanging Christmas stockings, which are just
waiting to be filled with goodies for good girls
and boys. Those without a fireplace often hang
stockings from windowsills and stairway banisters.
No written record exists to explain the origin
of hanging stockings on fireplace mantles. Despite this, many people link the tradition to a
tale about St. Nicholas. As that story goes, St.
Nicholas was traveling through a village when he
overheard the plight of three women. They were
poor, and their father could not afford an ample
dowry to marry them off. Rather than have them
end up spinsters, St. Nicholas secretly tossed
bags of coins through a window (or down the
chimney, depending on which version of the
story you read or hear), and they were captured
in the girls stockings hanging to dry by the fire.
The family was overjoyed to have received such
riches.
Soon news traveled about the mysterious
money in stockings, and other children left out
stockings for St. Nicholas to capture their own
gifts.
The tradition has transformed over the years,
and now many children hang stockings by the
chimney with the expectation that the stockings
will be filled with gifts from Santa. Traditions once
suggested that only gifts from Santa were left in
stockings, while gifts placed beneath the tree
were from family, but that has since changed.
Stockings are now meant to hold small gifts
while larger items are placed under the tree.
Stockings should be hung away from the
flames of the fire as a safety precaution. Some
children even like to hang individual stockings on
their bedposts instead of on a fireplace mantle.

Were so grateful to be
celebrating the holidays in
this winter wonderland
we call home.
Thanks for being such great
neighbors, customers
and friends.
We appreciate your support,
and we wish you all a very
merry Christmas!

Society still in need of

donations for those in need
Miriam Ostermann ~Times Associate Editor
With applicants on the rise and an influx of volunteers on
standby, the Strathmore & Wheatland County Christmas
Hamper Society continues to feel the pressure of a fastapproaching deadline as shelves remain bare and donations
in short supply.
With over 200 applicants already eligible for hampers, the
organization feels optimistic that donations from Strathmore
schools donations that are collected this week will address some of the issues.
Yes we are being affected, said Gwen Moggey, chairperson of the Strathmore & Wheatland County Christmas
Hamper Society.
People are very generous at this time of year, but of
course everyone wants some money right now too. The
schools might make a real difference. People give what they
can and every little bit is appreciated.
The Strathmore High School (SHS) already dropped off
seven bags on Dec. 11, which Moggey said helped fill up
some of the shelves. However, just as the food division of
the society is experiencing a decrease in food items, in comparison to last year, the toy division is also facing a decline.
Where last year resulted in 302 hampers handed out to
children, as of Monday, 270 were already approved for 2015,
with society members expecting that number to climb even
higher over the next few days. While toys appropriate for
children aged three to six are always abundant, the organization has also seen many donations, such as gift cards,
geared towards teenagers dropped off this year. Nonetheless, not enough donations have been acquired to fill all the
bags equally hampers that usually focus on the childs age
and may include pyjamas, personal items, books, a stuffed
animal with a total value of up to $80.
We are hurting as well, and we dont have enough toys,
said Marianne Pinchbeck, coordinator for the toy hamper
division of the Strathmore and Wheatland County Christmas
Hamper Society.

I dont think we have as much and were already at just

about as many kids as weve had in other years. Ill have to
go shopping. Some people donated cash, so I will try to find
some good buys.
The Strathmore & Christmas Hamper Society was able to
cut some costs this year through creative initiatives, such
as a social media campaign to collect Halloween candy
that attracted the attention from as far away as Drumheller.
Through such efforts, the society managed to save financially on chocolates and treats this season and focus money
on food items and toys.
The organization became a charitable society in 1985,
and has expanded noticeably since then. The program relies
heavily on volunteers and on numerous Strathmore-based
businesses, churches, schools, and individuals. For the first
time, the society also agreed to allow community members
to anonymously sponsor a family, by providing specific information on ages and sizes of the children, without providing
personal information.
Businesses that are locally-owned and run, go out of
their way to support these programs, Pinchbeck said. This
year, we tried something a little bit different. People that are
buying for families, they dont know if they have one family or three families. We will earmark them and make sure
theyre equal to bags were sending out to other kids.
All donations and requests for hampers must be received
by Dec. 17. Distributions are being made on Dec. 21 and
22.

The history behind some beloved

Christmas songs
The Christmas Song: This classic Christmas song
was written in 1944 by Bob Wells and Mel Torm. Its usually subtitled Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire. The
song was written during a heat wave as a way to think cool
thoughts. It only took 40 minutes to write the music and
some of the lyrics. Nat King Coles rendition of the song is
among the more popular versions.

Bring Home
the Feeling of
Christmas

The CFR Bisons held their 15th annual Christmas Shopping with the Bisons event in conjunction with Strathmores Calgary Co-op on Dec. 13.
The local triple-A midget team helped
over 20 children of single-parent homes
select gifts for their loved ones and offered a helping-hand in the wrapping
process.
Its a pretty special day for us, said
Bisons General Manager Wayne Hansen. The vets, when they come back,
the one thing they talk about on top of
the Macs tournament is the fact we do
this event. Were extremely grateful to
Calgary Co-op for 15 straight years of
sponsoring this. What our kids get out
of this is just how fortunate they really
are. They play hockey at an elite level and the next time theyre out there
breaking a $300 stick maybe think
about that a little bit, because that can
go a long ways in households.
Hansen said that one thing the organization thrives on is building mature
young men, not just hockey players.
We all read about when we move
into junior A, major junior and start playing pro hockey, theres a give-back part
where youre in the community, youre
doing things, said Hansen. Thats our
job here to train these kids to move on
and be prepared to play at the next
level and thats not just hockey. Thats
about being good community people. I
think thats why you see hockey players

who are playing pro, [they] are so good

at giving back and you dont see a lot
of them in trouble.
He added that community events like
these boost communications skills for
the players while giving them a better
idea on how to deal with the public.
These Bisons, it builds some character with them, showing them that
things like a $300 hockey stick they
got, that can feed a family for a month,
said Andy Piche, Co-ops meat department manager. I know these kids are
really appreciative and Co-op has always been a part of it, so we love doing it.
Bisons Captain Kyle Gordon thought
it was really important to give back to
a community that gives them a lot of
support and love.
Its an eye opener to realize how fortunate we are, said Gordon. Its definitely something Id like to keep going.
He said his favourite thing about being with the kids is seeing them happy
while picking out a gift for their family
members.
Rookie defensemen Liam Rycroft
said it helps kids build character as
well as making it a good experience
and fun.
Thats what the holidays is all about
right is giving back, said Rycroft.
These kids dont have a lot. They
come here wanting just to have fun.
Being around a bunch of older guys. It
kind of gives them an extra hop going
into the Christmas holidays.

Strathmores 903 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron hosted a Field Training Exercise (FTX)
this past weekend at Camp Kasota on Sylvan Lake. An FTX serves a number of purposes:
cadets learn practical outdoor skills such as land navigation, radio communications, basic casualty response, and leadership. It is held in a controlled environment with trained and experienced adult leaders in real conditions. Cadets are being taught basic navigation skills using a
compass. During Operation Save Santa the cadets must evacuate Santa to a shelter they

Times Reporter

The Lloydminster Bobcats provided the
CFR Bisons with a glimpse of playoff hockey as both teams ground it out for 60 minutes on Dec. 13.
Despite a solid effort by the Bisons, the
Bobcats came out with a 1-0 win.
It was two real good teams that played a
real heavy, slugged-out game, said Bisons
head coach Sandy Henry. I dont think anyone found a lot of space out there. I think
the work ethic was good. Im impressed
at how heavy of a game we played. Thats
probably one of the heavier games weve
played overall. Thats going to have to be a
part of the arsenal as you get up into playoffs. Thats what playoff hockey looks like.
I think we had as many chances to win that
game as they did and they got one and we
didnt and thats how it goes some nights.
Henry said that Lloyminster played was
different type of game than the Bisons are
used to.
The next levels are like that, said Henry. You garner attention. Theres five guys
out there against you and someone is going to be leaning on you and theyre taking
away your space and you got to learn how
to find it and earn it, battle for it and make
it yours.
I think the guys learned, you know

what, this is going to be heavy and its going to be mucky and sometimes you got to
get some blood in your nose to get what
you want of the game.
Goalie Hunter Virostek shed some light
on the loss and thought the team played
well in front of him.
We played as a team for sure, said
Virostek. We played way better than when
we first played them. They let me see the
shots all the way as much as possible. Just
the last one squeaked through but it happens.
On Friday night in the 7-1 win over Sherwood Park, Henry thought the boys were
sloppy from the beginning as the energy
did not transfer from pre-game onto the
ice, but credits the goaltending for giving
them a chance to win.
Ryan Simpson really held the fort for
us, said Henry. We didnt deserve it that
night but we got out of the period 1-0. Do
we get paid back for having that? Well I
think we were owed that one. In the second we got better. We had started minimizing their chances and increased ours. Once
we got that one in the third then I thought
we really got our legs going and we got
that lead.
Zach Cox led the way with two goals,
while Tyson Scott, Kyle Gordon, Tanner
Foster, Kaden Hanas and Liam Izyk scored
in the win.

The Bisons will host the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Dec. 19 at 5:15 p.m. and end the
2015 portion of the regular season schedule on Dec. 20 at Max Bell Centre against
the Calgary NorthStars at 3 p.m.
The Bisons will be hosting two pre-Macs
tournament exhibition games next week
with the first one on Dec. 22 at Strathmore
Family Centre versus Belarus at 7 p.m. The
second will be on Dec. 23 in Okotoks at
the Pason Centennial Arena versus Austria
at 7 p.m.
For us to have them on a yearly basis
is fantastic, said Bisons General Manager
Wayne Hansen of the exhibition games.
Its great for our players, our affiliates and
for our community that supports our team.
They get to see some international competition come to Strathmore, which to me is
awesome.
One thing the players will have to do on
the ice is adapt to a different style of play
that is presented by their opponents whom
they dont get the chance to see very often.
The odds are these teams play different
systems and stuff we dont see, said Hansen. Theyre developed differently. With
them being U17 national teams, theyll be
the best, youre basically playing an All Star
team.
The team will play a split squad in both
games and will add in affiliate players to fill
out the roster.

Carseland is looking to get baseball
back on the map and engage the communitys youths ages three to 15 in the
sport this coming spring.
The players would form t-ball, coach
toss, mosquito, peewee and bantam
teams, which would join a league with
Milo, Champion and Vulcan.
We did notice, last year during the
summer months that kids werent busy
as they shouldve been, said Ian Reiman, Minor Baseball director.
If we can keep them on the ball
diamond and keep them engaged in
minor sports, thats a thing wed like
to do.
He would like to see the program get
going fairly quickly in Carseland with
the long-term goals such as sending
teams to bigger-scaled tournaments.
Id like to see, within three years, a

team that we could enter into Baseball

Alberta and have a competitive team at
their provincials, he said.
Reiman wants to get the word out
before Christmas, as the board wants
to pursue promoting the game around
the area more aggressively after the
holidays, with the intention of utilizing
the facilities to their utmost potential.
Weve got the best facilities Ive ever
seen, said Reiman.
To start off the year, the plan is to
host a tournament around the beginning of May and another one at the
end of the month to offset registration
and operational fees.
The fee will be around $50 to play
ball for two months.
Registration has opened for players,
while the association is looking for
five dedicated volunteers to help run
the five teams. More information is
available through sports@carselandalberta.ca.

The Wheatland Warriors were able to score late to tie the Taber Golden Suns 3-3 at the Strathmore Family Centre on Dec. 13.

Braves look for full game efforts

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Braves found themselves down
6-3 halfway through the third on Friday night in
Hussar against the Cranbrook Eagles.
However, the local double-A peewee team
showed resiliency and believed in themselves
enough to come back in the last 10 minutes to
salvage a 6-6 tie.
The first period we came out pretty good, second period was a little bit of a let down, said
head coach Carl Knudsen. We waited until the
last 10 minutes or so before we wanted to try and
kick it into high gear and come back.
We tried to keep putting pucks to the net and
eventually we were bound for something to drop.
We stuck with that and I urged them to keep trying, keep giving it 110 per cent. I wanted to make
sure they knew it wasnt over yet. We still had
time to get some goals.
Knudsen said Cranbrook was able to capitalize
on their chances and he knew it was crucial that
the Braves start capitalizing on theirs.
Zach Nicholls and Adam Kirkpatrick scored two
apiece, while Tristan Zandee and Joel Romano
scored one each in the tie.
On Sunday afternoon in Lethbridge, Knudsen
thought the opening two periods were well played
by the team, and while the first five minutes of
third period they showed momentum, they were
unable to sustain in a 5-2 defeat.
We just kind of collapsed and they took over
in the last 15 and ran away with it, said Knudsen.
They got a couple of good, hardworking goals
and basically outworked us. They just wanted it a
little more.
Zandee scored both goals in the loss.
The Braves will hit the road for Medicine Hat
on Dec. 19 to face the Hounds at 7:30 p.m. before
hosting Okotoks Oilers Black at the Strathmore

WARRIORS GRAB POINT
The Wheatland Warriors played hard in a tough
match against Taber and salvaged a 3-3 tie with a
goal late on Dec. 13.
I think we definitely showed up tonight, said
head coach Cody Brown. Maybe had a slow start
and flat in the first period but we came out firing
in the second playing the hockey weve been trying to play since the beginning of the year and I
think the boys were working hard.
The local bantam double-A team saw themselves down 2-0 and worked hard to get a point
in the draw.
Its huge, said Brown. You get against a good
competition nothing comes as easy as they might
against a weaker opponent. Its good to see, everybody gets a reality check. Everything is not going to come that easy and you got to wake up and
get to work.
Carter Kam led the charge with two goals, while
Mo Hakim tied it late.
The Warriors are currently in a three-way tie
with Okotoks and Taber with 28 points.
The team will play the Central AB Selects on the
road on Dec. 18 at 6 p.m.
CHIEFS TAKE OUT TABER
The Wheatland Chiefs tied 3-3 in Taber on Dec.
11 before beating the same team 4-2 in Hussar the
following night.
Ryan Skytt, Jared Kirkpatrick and Ryan Bell
scored in the tie.
Ryan Romashenko notched two goals, while
Mitchell Fawcett and Wacy Sandum rounded out
the scoring in the win.
The Chiefs currently sit in first place with 23
points and are four points clear of second place
Okotoks.
The local midget double-A team will face the
Foothills Bisons in Hussar on Dec. 18 at 7:30 p.m.

Kings playing with confidence

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Kings stretched their winning
streak to three games after knocking off the topranked Mountainview Colts 3-2 on Dec. 11 in Didsbury.
According to Kings bench boss Emilio Fuoco, it
was their most complete effort of the year so far.
We followed the game plan almost to perfection, said Fuoco. It was a complete team effort. We
didnt allow them a lot of opportunities. All their
shots were from the perimeter, very few in tight,
five-on-five. We were able to control what they were
able to do and dictate the play.
Fuoco said their defensive zone play has improved immensely as guys are playing better positional play and not running around getting the
puck.
Its a completely different group, he said. We
have a legitimate Top 4 defense thats outstanding,
that potentially could be like Top 6 very strong de-

fense. Thats really helped us.

He mentioned earlier in the year they would lose
confidence because they would get deflated easier
if they were losing, but in cases like the game on
Friday where the scoring went back and forth, it
seemed the team would provide greater push back
compared to previous games.
We just had that confidence that just keep playing the way we asked them to play, said Fuoco.
Thats solid in our zone, solid in the neutral zone
and go have fun in the offensive zone. Mountainview is a really strong team in the sense that theyre
physically strong. They really play the body and we
didnt shy away. You could tell they were trying to
run us out of their own rink. We just kept to our
guns and played our own way, and it paid off.
Jayden Smith scored two goals while Lucas Jones
scored in the win.
The Kings will play in Banff on Dec. 18 at 8 p.m.,
and they will play their last home game of 2015
against the Coaldale Copperheads on Dec. 19 at
8:15 p.m.

Barons past Canucks
JUSTIN SEWARD

Three Strathmore players led the
Fort McMurray Oil Barons to a 4-3 win
over the Calgary Canucks in front of
more than 600 passionate fans at the
Strathmore Family Centre on Dec. 15.
Will Conley notched two goals and
Connor McCallum also tallied once
in front of their hometown fans. The
other Strathmore native, Shane Fraser,
added an assist in the contest, which
pitted the home team Calgary Canucks versus the visiting Barons.
It was just so exciting to come into
a rink that was so familiar and just
home for me, said Conley. Even our
home rink in Fort Mac doesnt quite
feel like this one. I grew up playing
here and scored a lot of goals on this
ice. Im glad to play my last game here
and score a couple goals.
He said it was good to hear a crowd
like that - loud and ecstatic - when he
scored his first goal against a consistent Canucks squad recently.
Theyre pretty hot right now, said
Conley. Theyre a good team with a
really good goaltender on the back
end. We just battled hard. We threw
the body around and buried on a lot

of our chances. Weve been struggling

scoring lately, but we got a really good
goaltender on the backend and it really helps having a crowd cheer us on.
Fraser was pumped up upon getting
to the rink and knew the crowd was
going to play a factor in the game.
It was pretty awesome, he said. I
knew it was going to be a big crowd.
My dad has been hyping it up all
week. I was pretty excited to get back
out here. I knew most of the people
would be cheering for us because of
the three local guys. To get the support for an away game for us was outstanding.
We just kept calm in our zone. (We)
talked it out whenever they had a flurry of chances.
According to McCallum, to start the
game with Conley and Fraser on the
very first shift of the game was an unbelievable feeling, which kicked off a
special night.
We had lots of energy for that first
shift, he said. To get to start in Strathmore, our hometown was pretty amazing. It definitely felt like we were the
home team even though the Canucks
were getting the goal horn. I think,
even at the end you could tell who everybody was cheering for.

Spartans basketball looking

for more consistency
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Spartans
senior girls basketball team
provided themselves with a
good measuring stick after
their home tournament last
weekend in terms of how
they stack up against strong
teams and what it will take
to win basketball games this
season.
We just need to find out
whats going to work, said
head coach Dion Galandy.
With a young team it
makes it more challenging
to get them to play against
Grade 12s as Grade 10s.
Galandy said the girls
need to keep their intensity
up, play smarter and play
with focus, which will all
come with consistency.
However, he thinks there
are a lot of positives to take
moving forward into the
season, especially with the
returning players. Our returning players are playing
well, said Galandy.
Theyre playing with a
desire to want to make a
difference on the team. Its
been good to see them and
try to step up and lead the
team. I think theyll be leaders and itll continue just to
improve. January is the next
part of the season where
we have to improve and get
rolling there.
He added the team has
focused more on defense
more than offense early on
this season and said they
will shift that over a little
bit and work more on their
offense while continuing

to work on their defensive

schemes.
The girls went 1-2 in the
tournament and lost in the
consolation game.
As for the senior boys,
they have two tournaments
under their belt this season
and are looking to get better
in every game as head coach
Kyle Larson said their team
speed, athleticism and hard
work will be a big part of
their success for the rest of
the season. We are a very
deep team and will rotate
all players through the floor
this season, said Larson.
Our team commitment to
defense and pressure is very
strong and defensively. We
have never had a team that
works this hard collectively.
When we are shooting well,
we are very dangerous. We
have excellent scoring depth
this year and get offensive
contributions from all of our
kids.
However, Larson said with
their high tempo game there
would be areas of their game
that will need to be worked
on to stay consistent.
We play a very up tempo
game and as such our decision making will need to
improve, he said. We will
need to continue to work
at improving our shooting
every practice so that we
are consistently a threat for
teams from behind the three
point arc.
The overall goal for the
season will be to try to get
two wins every weekend
and make it to zones, all
while pushing hard for a
spot in provincials.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Eleanor, the first born daughter of Dorothy Myer and Clarence Johnson. After a yearlong heroic battle with cancer she passed
away peacefully in her sleep at home. She was predeceased
by her son David, both parents, and sister Joy. She is survived by the love of
her life, Bill. Siblings Vernon, Will (Wendy), Minerva, Sherman, Ruth and Jim.
Her daughters Christine (Pat), Dori-Lynn and foster son Jacob. Grandchildren
Lytasha (Scott), Ashley (Ryan), Alora (Kevin), Juliana, Mitchell (Kris) and Izaac.
Great grandchildren Daniel, Steven, Damien, Alexia, Dustin, Patrick, Conrad, and
Dominic, as well as a large extended family, many friends and adopted family
she gathered along her way. Eleanor was a guiding light who touched the lives
of everyone she met. She lives on in our hearts, minds and family legacy that
continues to grow. We intend to have a celebration of life in January, details
will be on Facebook, anyone who would like is welcome to attend. The family appreciates your thoughts and prayers. To send condolences, please visit
