ECE 476 Power System Analysis Fall 2010

Exam #1, Thursday, October 5, 2010. 12:30-1:1:50PM

Name:
Problem 1 (25 p)
The following three-phase loads are connected in parallel across a 2400 V (line-line) three-phase power supply.
1. Load 1: 120 kVA at 0.8 power factor lead.
2. Load 2: 180 kW at 0.6 power factor lag.
3. Load 3: 30 kW at unity power factor.
(a) Find the total complex power of three loads.

(b) Find the overall power factor.

(c) Find line current in the supply line.

Problem 2 (25 p)
A three-phase transmission line is mounted on the tower as shown below.

A
D

C
D

The radius of each conductor is r meters. Assume that d is much smaller than D. The three line currents are
defined as positive into the paper and they sum to zero.

(a) Find the distributed flux (per meter) linking conductor A in terms of IA , IC , d, D, and r.

(b) Find the distributed flux (per meter) linking conductor B in terms of IB , d, D, and r.

(c) Find the distributed flux (per meter) linking conductor C in terms of IA , IC , d, D, and r.

Problem 3 (26 p)
A 60-Hz 138-kV 3 transmission line is 225 miles long. The distributed parameters are r = 0.169 /mi, l = 2.093
mH/mi, c = 0.01427 F/mi. The transmission line delivers 40 MW at 132 kV (line-to-line) with 95% power
factor lagging.
(a) Find the sending-end voltage and current.

(b) Find the transmission-line efficiency, i.e., the ratio of real power in the sending-end and the power delivered to the load in the receiving-end.

Problem 4 (24 p)
Indicate whether the following statements are true or false:
1. TRUE/FALSE. In a purely resistive single-phase load fed by a sinusoidal voltage of frequency f , the
frequency of the instantaneous power drawn by this load is also f .
2. TRUE/FALSE. In a balanced three phase abc positive sequence system, the instantaneous power is
given by p(t) = 3 Va Ia cos(Va Ia ) + 3 Va Ia cos(Va + Ia + 2t).
3. TRUE/FALSE.
balanced three phase abc positive sequence system, the complex power
In a three-phase
j/6
is given by S = 3 V ab I a e
, where V ab is the line voltage, and I a is the line current.
4. TRUE/FALSE. When computing the flux linkages for a single-wire line of infinite length and finite
radius, the linkages due to the flux inside the wire can be neglected and the only contribution to the flux
linkages is due to flux outside the wire.
5. TRUE/FALSE. For a lossless transmission line, the propagation constant is a purely real number.
6. TRUE/FALSE. In transmission lines shorter than 50 miles, in general, neglecting the shunt impedance
introduces serious errors in the model.
7. TRUE/FALSE. The characteristic impedance of a lossless transmission line is a purely real number.
8. TRUE/FALSE. In a lossless transmission line loaded with its surge impedance, there is a reactive power
flow between the sending and the receiving end of the line.
