ASSESSMENT FORMAT OF PHYSICS SPM

http://smksimpangpulai.blogspot.com

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Physics is an elective subject in secondary schools, which caters to the needs of

pupils who are inclined towards Science and Technology. The Physics curriculum
has been designed not only to provide opportunities for students to acquire e
science knowledge and skills, develop thinking skills and thinking strategies, and
to apply this knowledge and skills in everyday life, but also to inculcate in them
noble values and the spirit of patriotism. Assessment, in the form of tests and
examinations helps to gauge pupils’ achievement. Assessment in Physics include
aspects such as understanding of concepts, mastery of skills and non-routine
questions that demand the application of problem-solving strategies. The use of
good assessment data from a variety of sources provides valuable information on
the development and progress of pupils. On-going assessment built into the daily
lessons allow the identification of pupils strengths and weaknesses, and
effectiveness of the instructional activities.

2.0 AIM

1. To provide students with the knowledge and skills in physics and technology and
to enable them to solve problems and make decisions in everyday life based on
scientific attitudes and noble values.
2. To pursue formal and informal further education in science and technology
3. To develop a dynamic and progressive society with a science and technology
culture that values nature and works towards the preservation and conservation of
the environment.

3.0 SUBJECT OBJECTIVES (OM) OF PHYSICS

The Physics curriculum enables pupils to:
1. acquire knowledge in physics and technology and in the context of natural
phenomena and everyday life experiences.
2. understand developments in the field of physics and technology
3. acquire scientific and thinking skills
4. apply knowledge and skills in a creative and critical manner to solve problems
and make decisions.
5. face challenges in the scientific and technological world and be willing to
contribute towards the development of science and technology.
6. evaluate science and technology related information wisely and effectively
7. practice and internalize scientific attitudes and good moral values
8. appreciate the contributions of science and technology towards national
development and the well-being of mankind.
9. realize that scientific discoveries are the result of human Endeavour to the best of
his or her intellectual and mental capabilities to understand natural phenomena for
the betterment of mankind.
10. be aware of the need to love and care for the environment and play an active role
in its preservation and conservation.

4.0 ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVES (OP) OF PHYSICS

Based on the subject objectives , the following assessment objectives are

identified to evaluate the students ability in

CONSTRUCT EXPLANATION
1. KNOWLEDGE • definitions/meanings of terms
• classifying/ categorizing
• list examples
• stating principles/laws
• labeling diagrams
2. COMPREHENSION • translating from graphics to text form
• translating from text form to graphics
• interpretation of set of information and stating it in
another form
• extrapolation/predicting outcomes
• explanations of concepts, principles and situations
3. APPLICATION OF explanation of phenomena
KNOWLEDGE interpretation of data(graphic and text)
drawing conclusion
4. PROBLEM qualitative
SOLVING quantitative
experimenting
• identify variables
• making inference
• making hypothesis
• stating procedure
• tabulating data
• converting data to graphics
• extrapolation and interpolation of graphs
• calculation of gradient
• stating relationship between variables /making conclusion
• stating precautions
5. CONCEPTUALIZING • Ability to identify common characteristics and/ or
variables
• Analyzing common characteristics and/or relationship
between variables
• Synthesizing common characteristics and/or relationship
between variables to form a physics concept.
6. DECISION MAKING • Ability to identify aim, analyses and asses all alternative
solutions to a problem
• Choosing the best alternative with the aim of making a
decision
• To state the justification for the decision made.
5.0 ASSESSEMENT

The important aspects to be considered in the formation of assessment format are:

5.1 Validity

Validity of the test score involves the relevance and the syllabus on the
whole. Assessment format is done to make sure all the construct are tested
based on the objective of the subject, Physics. The items are to be made
sure that it follows the curriculum, test/exam specification and the
relevance based on the targeted group, level of difficulty, context and the
situation. The content of the instrument should include all the aspect i.e.
Knowledge, skill and the values acquired in the process of learning as
required by the curriculum.

5.2 Credibility

The credibility of the score involves the accuracy of the test and coverage
of the whole syllabus. The test specification is formed for every instrument
to assessed so that it can be standardized.

5.3 Can be carried out

All the aspects in the administration of the assessment is taken into

consideration in the assessment format so that that the assessment can be
carried out well.

5.4 Quality

The assessment format is formed not only to make sure that all the
requirement in the curriculum is fulfilled but also to make sure that the
assessment is of the required quality.

5.5 Curriculum requirement

The assessment format and the proposed item must involve all the skills
and the values as required by the curriculum.
