CHAPTER V
CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

A. Conclusion

This last chapter deals with conclusion. The conclusion is drawn based on
the result of the analysis on data. It is presented to answer the problem statements of
the research. The following is the conclusion of this research:
1. From the analysis of the data, the types of commissives that are employed by the
characters in the movie A Bugs Life are promise, guarantee, refusal, threat,
volunteer, and offer.
2. When the speakers perform commissive speech acts, those speech acts have
certain functions. They are:
a. Promises, offers, and volunteers are expressed to maintain and repair the
relationship. Promises are also used by the speakers when they try to show
loyalty, love and care to the hearers.
b. Guarantees are expressed to get sympathy from the hearer and to express the
belief and conviction of the speaker about something.
c. Refusals are expressed to show the dislike and distrust of the speakers to the
hearers and also to save the speakers from the bad effects made by the hearers
or to avoid conflicts with the hearers.

d. Threats are uttered to express the negative feeling and anger of the speakers to
the hearers and also to intimidate the hearers as a form of the speakers
intention to show the higher power and status.
3. The speakers use verbal and non-verbal expression in uttering commissives. The
verbal expression means the speaker utters direct or indirect speech act, explicit or
implicit statement, in high, normal, or low intonation. The non-verbal expression
is commonly done through body language to emphasize his/her speech acts which
is performed via eyes gaze, facial expression (happy, sad, annoyed, angry, and
disappointed), and body movement (nodding the head, shaking the hands, and
pushing the hearer).
4. Why commissive speech acts are exploited in the movie A Bugs Life because
there is a relationship between the theme and the speech acts. The theme and the
subthemes of the movie are about commissives, they shape the context of
situation formating the commissive speech acts uttered by the characters in the
movie.

B. Suggestions

Based on the analysis of commissive speech acts in the movie A Bugs

Life, the researcher offers some suggestions that may be useful for the students and
other researchers who are interested in this kind of field study.
1. To the students, especially the English Department students who are interested in
Speech Acts Study. They are expected to explore the speech acts especially about

commissives to find out that commissive speech acts are not only classified into
promise, threat, guarantee, offer, volunteer, and refusal. There are still many other
types of commissives which can be found in the interactions.
2. To the other researchers, in this research, the researcher only focuses on the types
of commissives in the movie A Bugs Life, the functions of commissives in the
communication among the characters in that movie, the ways to perform
commissives, and why commissives are exploited in that movie. There are still
many other classifications of speech act that can be taken into the similar field of
the research. The researcher expects that the other researchers will be interested in
conducting a research about speech acts as a further and a more detailed analysis
in the same field by taking the other classifications of speech acts such as
directives, representatives, expressives, or declarations in the movie A Bugs Life.
It is also possible to the other researchers to conduct the same research in the
different sources of data such as the other movie, novel, or drama.
