Escalating numbers of those destitute, soaring job losses, and an incessant unstable economy became active motivators in local officials decision to dig into the towns
pockets and invest up to $60,000 for a transitional shelter
much to the surprise of those in attendance where town
council had earlier indicated bringing the proposal back
in early 2016 to allow time to familiarize themselves with
the content.
John Hilton-OBrien, Pastor Elizabeth Karp, Pastor Dawn
Nelson, and Waldo Munoz provided council with a detail
proposal on a transitional shelter that would house those
without overnight accommodations, and provide them
with a meal in the morning before vacating the premises.
However, while the Harvest Healing Centre Church is
willing to provide the space, the building requires upgrades and modifications to make it eligible for the necessary insurance. As a result, the town was asked to donate
$40,000 for capital costs, and $5,000 a month for operations.
This would translate into the installation of showers and
added washroom space.
Although some council members had praised the proposal and acknowledged the urgency of the project, they
said they would like to see the issue be brought back in
a few weeks time. Yet Pastor Dawn Nelson, with Lord of
All Lutheran Church, ensured council of the need within
the community, having already dealt with more residents
in need than before.
Since Monday morning at nine oclock, Ive had 13
people come to our doors that are in crisis, Ive never
seen it like this and if we dont do something, were going to find bodies, I know that, said Pastor Nelson at the
council meeting on Wednesday Dec. 16. Ive never had a
week like this and it scares me. The other concern I have
with that is the economy right now. What were seeing is
scary. People dont have money for their own needs, so as
we go out into the community theres a need.
Im going to tell you that most of the people Im talking
to are going, yes, because Im that close.
Pastor Elizabeth Karp at the Harvest Healing Centre
Church echoed Pastor Nelsons concerns about the increase of local people in need, with the line-ups continuously increasing for their bread ministry program a program she said attracts not only homeless people or those
on the verge, but regular citizens and those whove lost
their jobs.
The transitional shelter - for now a mat program - would
accommodate 10 individuals per night. To ensure the shelters ongoing operation throughout the year, the expected
cost is estimated at $164,000, including the $30,000 donated by the Harvest Healing Centre Church for space,
which wouldve been spent on rent otherwise.

Disagreement over Canadian Badlands

membership tables issue
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

The renewal of the town membership with the Canadian
Badlands grew divisive, when former empty promises and a
lack of effort for increased town involvement divided council on the issue and shelved a decision to dish out thousands
of dollars.
The Town of Strathmore received an invoice from the Canadian Badlands, the largest municipal partnership in Canada, for the 2016 annual shareholder levy totalling $6,423 a
figure derived from $0.50 per capita based on the population
provided by the 2012 Municipal Affairs population list. The
request for the continuation of the membership, however,
was met with dissent from some councillors who felt the
organization failed to follow through on previously agreed
upon commitments.
I cannot sit here and support our involvement any longer
to the Canadian Badlands, were still not even on the list of
stops, at this time Im not prepared to vote in favour of staying with this organization, said Councillor Brad Walls.
I felt like I had a gun to my head when they came to us
last year at this time when they said Were going to pull the
AGM if you guys decide to pull out. I listened to the executive director and I listened to Barry [Morishita] talk about
some of the good things that have come from Strathmore,
and some concerns about getting our name on the map and
really trying to make us actually part of the team. That hasnt
been done. So I cannot sit here and support an organization
that cant even update their map because now were a part
of that.
According to Walls, he is receptive to further discussions
with the organization, upon a new map, including Strathmore, being presented to the town. In a letter to the town,
the Canadian Badlands outlined their achievements, including their efforts to implement regional and local tourism initiatives, facilitating the development of new tourism
products, marketing many of the regions key attractions and
events, and promoting the region as a whole. Yet the lack
of representation and promotion in relation to Strathmore
raised concerns among other councillors.
This is a never ending story, and the only reason we

went another year was they said they wanted the AGM here
but other than that, I havent seen them, said Councillor
Bob Sobol. On a couple of occasions, when we come to this
point, Ive heard that the onus is on us to do a little bit more
to deal with these people. Thats where I have my issue.
I think the onus should be on them to be working with
us and I have yet to see that to any great extent. I see some
value in this, but I see some value in a group thats going to
take their responsibility seriously and I have great concerns
about that.
Asked whether attempts had been made to contact the
Canadian Badlands and increase promotion for the town,
Chief Administrator Dwight Stanford confirmed that efforts
had been made in the past.
However, not all councillors dismissed the proposal so
quickly. With 63 partnering communities across southeastern Alberta, Councillor Denise Peterson felt that better communication and raising their concerns with the organization
would help acknowledge different applications.
I think it needs to become a part of this municipal council planning initiative and we can bring things to the Canadian Badlands that we want to see on that agenda; I dont
think that weve done as much as we possibly could, said
Peterson. I see huge opportunities for this 63 partnering
community organization to move into areas, for instance the
senior advisory have acknowledged that theres opportunity
for senior events within this capacity.
Anytime we can bring 63 communities into a communication partnership for $0.50 a person, I think its a wonderful
opportunity and its one that we need to put on our planning
agenda for the spring. I think we can encourage them to do
a much better job than theyve been doing.
While Peterson said she understood her fellow councillors frustrations, she proposed an interim solution to contact
the organization and request actions to be taken to address
councils concerns before making a motion.
Council agreed to accept the request for the 2016 Canadian Badlands annual shareholder levy as information, and
advised administration to draft a letter to the organization
outlining the concerns of the council with regards to the
omissions related to the community within their advertising
tourism structure, at the Dec. 16 regular council meeting.

Strathmore RCMP is currently

investigating a number of theft from
vehicles that occurred in the early
morning hours of December 20th. RCMP
members noticed multiple vehicles
along Maplewood Drive with their doors
left open and unlocked. These vehicles
appeared to have been rummaged
through and the unknown suspect(s)
appeared to be looking for change
and cigarettes.
RCMP Strathmore later recovered a
bag of sunglasses left on the road on
a nearby street. Should you have any
information regarding these thefts, or
have been a victim, please contact the

When measuring cholesterol levels, doctors often

calculate a risk ratio when interpreting results of
your cholesterol tests. This is simply a ratio of the
total cholesterol (TC) to the HDL cholesterol (i.e.
TC divided by HDL). Ratios of less than 3.5 are
thought to put one at a lower risk for coronary heart
disease.
People that are truly allergic to gluten have celiacs
disease. A component of gluten, called gliadin is
what causes the main problem. Researchers in
Alberta are working on a supplement which will
bind with gluten in the stomach and prevent the
symptoms of celiac disease. The hope is that the
product will be available in about three years after
further testing is done.
With so many smartphones cameras in pockets or
purses today, it is very easy to snap a picture of a
medical condition like a rash or mole. Even a short
movie can be taken then shown to your doctor,
particularly if the problem comes and goes. Its a
good example how taking a selfie can be of benefit
to your health.
If losing weight is on your list of resolutions for
the new year, think of this: even a 5 to 10% loss in
weight will result in health benefits. The secret to
weight loss is to lose it slowly and steadily and to
maintain the lifestyle you followed to lose it in the
first place.
Good communication between healthcare
professionals and patients is important for your
better health. Talk to us regarding your medication
concerns.

cern to light are well aware of what is happening

as these thieves have stolen vehicles and broken
into properties and have left them destroyed. The
consistent targets have been farms in the area.
Strathmore RCMP Sgt. Steve Vince wanted to
make the public aware that break and enters
do happen and there are safety precautions that
people should take when not in the vicinity of
their homes and vehicles.
Theres been some break and enters, said
Vince.
But no more than normal. I think the best
thing for people to do is to keep their vehicles
locked, keep their houses locked and keep valuables out of site.
However, Vince said the break-in and enters
have no connections and there is no evidence
that anything out of the ordinary is occurring.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS

~ Odo and Sharon Melcher

JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
Odo is a German name, and is really
spelt Udo but when he was baptized
it changed to Odo! His father Joseph
Melcher was a farmer in Germany, and
came to the Rockyford area in 1928,
where he purchased farmland from Bill
Rudd in 1929.
To this day, members of his family still live and farm this land located
north and west of town.
Joseph returned to Germany in 1936, where he
met and married Marie
Summerhausen,
and
brought her with him
to Rockyford. This marriage produced two children a sister Ellenmie
born in 1938, and Odo
born on Dec. 31, 1940
the last baby of that year
born in Calgary.
Joseph and Marie
transformed their land
into a large mixed farm
with cattle, chickens,
pigs, and grain fields.
In 1960, Joseph was instrumental in
building St Ritas School on the north
end of town. They retired to Calgary in
1963, but two years later returned to
Rockyford where they built the house
in town.
Odo has lived all his life at the family farm, attended school at St Ritas
and sang in the church choir, where
he met, then married Sharon Koester.
They took over the farm from his parents, and moved to the farm. Today, the
farm is mainly cattle and grain.
Sharons father Ralph Koester was
born in 1920, and moved from Iowa
to Rockyford in 1929. Sharons mother
Rose was born in Shuler northeast of
Medicine Hat in 1915, and moved to

Rockyford. She married Ralph Koester

in 1943. Sharon was born in Calgary
in 1944, and attended St Ritas School
for 12 years, and as a member of St
Ritas Church sang in the choir, where
she met Odo. They were married at St
Ritas Church in 1963, and have three
sons - Randal born in 1964, Brent (Pamela) born in 1965, and Colin born in
1969. They also have four grandchildren - Gavin, Carly, Paeton and Reagan. Randal now farms the home place,
and he also bought 800 acres from his
grandfather Ralph, after
graduating from high
school. Brent farms the
former Ace Explosives
land on Hwy 21, as well
as a section that his father purchased from
Morgans in 1965. Colin
works for Flowmax in
Drumheller.
Odo has been a member of the Knights of
Columbus for 42 years,
on the St. Ritas Cemetery Board for 30 years,
a member of the Rockyford Lions Club for 40
years, a member of the Curling Club,
and is a sales rep for Remeo Memorials
of Regina, Sask. for 30 years. One of
his biggest challenges as a Lion was to
convert St Ritas School into the Rockyford Community Centre and Library in
1979. This was the same building his
father built in 1960!
Sharon is a member of CWL the
Catholic Womens League, and as a
grandmother is always available for
baby-sitting! And, she loves to knit and
crochet.
The main changes they have seen are
that all the elevators are gone, theres
no farm implement dealer in town, and
theyve heard the public school will
close for good, next year.

Town donates thousands to address homelessness

Continued from Page 1

The shelter would also require some
staff, some with mental health training,
to be hired.
With at least 10 individuals in Strathmore without shelter on a daily basis,
some of them sleeping in vehicles that
are moved each night as to not attract
attention, and additional units in the
campgrounds living in trailers without
insulation, concerns are rising.
As organizations in Calgary, such as
the Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre
and Inn from the Cold, have already
reached capacity, Strathmore is running
out of options to house its homeless.
We know that the problem is going
to get worse, following the numbers
it looks like about 300 jobs, mostly in
oil-patch-related work, are going to be
lost in Strathmore this year thats what
the total should stand at right now,
said John Hilton-OBrien, member of
Knights of Columbus in Calgary and an
experienced homeless worker. People

employment insurance this winter. Given the numbers, thats about 900 men,
women, and children whose family is
deprived of its primary source of income.
Weve also seen anecdotal evidence
of people who are staying temporarily in nearby campsites, people who
are staying in their cars often moving
overnight so as not to be disturbed by
authorities, and the occasional person
who is simply sleeping in the rough.
There is a real concern that this winter
may see someone die of exposure. And
were hoping to avoid that.
Council requested a five-minute recess, and upon their return voted in
favour to approve $40,000 from financial stabilization for 2015 to the Harvest Healing Centre Church, and up to
$20,000 in matched donations for 2016.
Councillor Rocky Blokland and Councillor Pat Fule were not present during
the meeting. Council was told the transitional shelter could be up and running within a couple weeks of receiving the funds.

Rosebud Education Director grateful that God blesses and provides

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

My year-end conversation
with Paul Muir, Rosebud
School of the Arts education
director, started with a tour
of the 102-year-old Rosebud Hotel, which houses the
schools offices. Muir and
I mused about the stories
those walls hold about peo-

ple who moved in and out of

the building 100 years ago.
We agreed the hotel guests
couldnt have imagined their
rooms would one day be offices for a performing arts
school.
But likely or not, Rosebud
School of the Arts (RSA) is
here - and its thriving.
I am continually so pleased
and proud of our graduates,

NEWS

By Irene Knappe, Secretary / PR / Membership

This time of year is always a joyous and busy one for most of us. But we
must not forget about those who are much less fortunate. Its also a bad
time in our economy, both provincially and federally. A lot of us have lost
our jobs and are wondering what to do. I have always firmly believed that
NO-ONE deserves to be alone at Christmas and hope that you do too. If you
know of someone who will be alone, why not put out an invitation for Christmas dinner? Its never too late to add a plate! Something Ive learned: no
matter how bad you have it, there is someone who is worse off! And please
go by the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you!
My father, who left us in July, told me a story I loved listening to him tell. It
was about one Christmas during World War II. There was no Christmas tree.
Indeed, there are no Christmas trees in the tropics. So, my dad and some
of the others got together and from the tropical trees made their Christmas
tree. No decorations. An idea came to mind that if all the men who smoked
kept the silver wrap that was around the cigarettes and made ornaments
out of them to hang in the tree, they would indeed have glittering ornaments! Well, it worked and they had a beautiful, decorated, Christmas tree
for Christmas.
Well, I hope everyone who has read this Legion News article throughout the
year has a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS with all your friends and loved-ones,
and perhaps a cold and hungry stranger or two.

LEST WE FORGET / WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

Thought for
the Week
~
We live our
lives in forward
motion,
but only
understand
them when
looking
backward

Muir said. I was at the Emerge

auditions, back in April, which
are the province-wide auditions
for (new) grads of all the theatre
programs, and I was so proud of
all of our people ... everybody
just did so well.
And those graduates - Fellows
of Rosebud School of the Arts
(FRSAs) - are in demand. This
fall, for instance, four FRSAs were
involved in Theatre Calgarys The
Crucible, and several were involved in The Shakespeare Companys Romeo and Juliet.
In December, two more performed in Theatre Calgarys
Christmas Carol. That demand
can bring unexpected results,
though, as when Muir wanted
to hire a 2015 graduate to stage
manage an upcoming RSA student show, but found she was
already stage managing for another theatre.
The fact that they are busy and
getting work -- Im just pleased
and proud of them, he said.
Thats the goal and reputation
hes been working toward since
he came to Rosebud 15 years
ago. Theres this theatre school
thats a place of faith that trains
people and that our graduates
are recognized in the professional world, he said. So that is
gratifying, that people recognize
the training here to be something
that is really outstanding.
To keep making that possible,
Rosebud Centre of the Arts (RCA)
launched The Harvest fundraising campaign this year, with the
goal of $250 000, to be matched
by patrons Richard and Lois Haskayne. In fall, another donor offered to match, and therefore
triple, the last $100,000. By midDecember, RCA had exceeded
the goal - resulting in a total of
over $600,000.
That has been an absolute
blessing, Muir said. An unexpected joy to actually go, wow!
We did it! People came forward
and contributed and that was
awesome.
For Rosebud Theatre, Muir acted in Miracle Worker this spring,
connecting deeply with the story,
because RSA strives to do for students what Helen Kellers teacher
did for her.
We work to try to bring life
and voice and language to our
students, he said. Once that

student really steps into their

unique, God-given, authentic
voice - when that voice speaks
from the stage, when that voice,
that essence, puts who they are
into a set design or into a building a costume or something, then
weve got the magic theatre. And
theatre that has the potential to
transform lives.
Muir
directed
Mass Appeal in
Rosebud this fall,
and also shared
his directing talents at Pacific
Theatre, remounting Underneath
the Lintel in January, and Chemainus Theatre,
where he directed
Confessions of a
Paper Boy in August.
The
primary
challenges
of
2015 have been
staff departures, but Muir marveled that God provided just the
right people to replace them.
April Harrison filled the vacant
role of recruitment officer.
Weve been so grateful for her
help, Muir said. That brought
us into a really fine and full class,
12 students for this past September.
When FRSA Cassia Schramm
filled the vacant position of Education Assistant, her work revolutionized the office.
And when Rosebud Theatres
wardrobe manager Jette Brown
retires, shell be replaced by Amy
McIvor-Castro, a perfect fit.
Pianist Sarah Penner and a
voice instructor are also leaving,
but Muir is optimistic their roles
will soon be filled. All in all, he
said, people leaving, but then in
ways that we really wouldnt expect, God providing new people
to step into those spots.
Its been a busy year for him,
but in my tiny little pockets of
spare time, I continue to make
some progress on the ongoing
project that is my house! Muir
said. This falls project has been
(building) a deck, which my
brother came down (from Edmonton) and helped with.
RSA will open 2016 with a
Winter Intensive on Acting for
the Camera, and a few weeks lat-

er, the new Bloomin Playwrights

Festival, showcasing the plays of
Leah T. Herne and Laird Salkeld.
In February, students will
again take theatre trips to the
West Coast and New York. Muir
is pleased that FRSAs are involved in leading those trips, and
that other graduates are working
as RSA teaching assistants.
To learn the
(skill) is one thing,
he said. To learn
to teach it is another whole skill
set, so its neat to
have ways in which
we can pass on not
only the skills, but
pass on the teaching of the skills.
Between
January and August,
six fourth-year students will present
Final Projects, ranging from a wartime
love story, a performance based
on the music of Travis Friesen, a
compilation of womens stories, a
poetry piece, a play based on L.
M. Montgomerys Rilla of Ingleside, to a one-man show called
House.
In March, the fourth-year class
will perform the Rosebud Theatre for Young Audiences Sleeping Beauty, and in April, the
second-year class presents Madeleine LEngles A Wrinkle in Time.
Muir is excited that RSA is redeveloping the Arts in Action
program, set to begin in September and designed to give people
a grounding in using theatre as
a medium for (gospel ministry)
outreach and for social change.
Hell act in Rosebud Theatres
Outside Mullinghar in spring and
direct Miracle on 34th Street next
December.
In school, theatre and further
afield, Muir looks forward to another full year.
Here we go, and take a deep
breath! he said. Trust in God
and jump in and somehow we
make it to the end of the year,
every year. Trust God with the
education here. Trust God with
theatre. Trust God with ticket
sales. Trust God with our finances. Trust God with our students.
We have to go into each year like
that.

Fire departments equipment approved for 2016

Wheatland County Council arrived at a decision
to spend millions of dollars over the next decade
to ensure the Wheatland County Fire Capital Committee funding for new equipment.
Over $6 million will be spent over the next 10
years in Fire Capital Funding for equipment for
seven fire departments in the county.
Wheatland Countys Chairman of the Fire Capital Committee and General Manager of Agriculture and Community and Protective Services, Jim
Laslo, was pleased that council approved the 10year capital plan and some adjustments that will
be made accordingly.
The Fire Capital Committee brought forward
their requests and recommendations for capital
assets, based on the needs of the Fire Associations
and Wheatland County Fire Services, said Laslo.
The 10-year capital plan is reviewed annually,
and changes are made to it as deemed necessary.
Based on priorities with the needs of the county

as a whole considered.
For 2016, the pieces of equipment that were
approved in the budget were the tender for the
Gleichen and District Fire Association thats worth
$350,000 with $210,000 of that coming from the
Fire Large Capital Fund, a fire engine for the
Hussar Rural Fire Association for $500,000 with
$300,000 coming from the Fire Large Capital
Fund. Lastly, an engine for the Wheatland County
Fire Services and the Carseland Fire Department
for $436,000 with the Fire Large Capital Fund supplying $261,600 of that to round out the sufficient
funding that Wheatland County will include in
their 2016 budget for the four front line apparatus.
Additionally, the Fire Capital Committee wanted
the large capital fund to help with the Rosebud
Fire Associations bush buggy worth $160,000,
with $96,000 coming from the large capital fund,
as well as Dalum receiving a generator for $27,000
with $16,584 of that being funded by the large
capital fund.
Council was told that all associations are included in some aspects of the 10-year plan.

Critical issues need to be discussed

MARTIN SHIELDS
Bow River Member of Parliament

The Speech from the Throne read by the Governor General of Canada on Dec. 4, was the official
opening act of Canadas 42nd Parliament.
As this is my first opportunity to write to you
as your new Member of Parliament in Bow River,
allow me to thank you for choosing me to be your
representative.
I will do my utmost to make sure your voice
is heard in our federal parliament. The throne
speech contained, in very broad terms, the plan
of this Liberal government for the next four years.
I think there were some positive commitments
in the throne speech, but I also have some concerns that there were gaps. Some sectors were
avoided entirely. Issues that are critical to our region, such as the oil and gas, agriculture, and rural
infrastructure were not touched on whatsoever.
As they are the backbone of our local economy
here in Bow River, I think that as a proactive, responsible Member of Parliament, it is my responsibility to speak for these sectors. I referred to
these sectors in my maiden speech in the House.
The next four years are crucial for Bow River
and Alberta as a province, and we will need a government that is proactive on trade policy. A number of our local businesses rely on exports to sur-

vive, and they would not be able to grow without

a clear and focused trade policy.
I was encouraged to hear that the Liberal government would continue to work on trade deals
in the throne speech. Unfortunately, there was no
specific mention of the Trans-Pacific Partnership,
which is the most important trade deal in Canadian history. Our Conservative government worked
hard to secure a spot for Canada in this deal, and
we will make sure that this Liberal government
commits to signing it and ratifying it as soon as
possible.

work hard for you in Ottawa. I look forward to

Audience members were
treated to a unique production this week, filled with local talent, African culture, and
the remarkable true story of
a young community member.
From Dec. 14-16, Strathmore High School (SHS)
Dance 25 and Dance 35
classes presented a dramatic
retelling of the beautiful reunion of Rwandan-Canadian
Grade 11 student Rachel
Mutesi with her mother.
The 45-minute production
featured Mutesis journey of
believing she was virtually
an orphan for six years, her
struggle to grip the reality
of a murdered father and a
missing mother, and finally,
the anticipated reunion at the
Calgary International Airport
when she was 12 years old.
Just over 20 years ago, the
country of Rwanda was torn
apart due to a horrific genocide that lasted 100 days.
This did not mark the end
of the turmoil, though, and
six years after the end of the
genocide, the continued violence placed Mutesi in the
hands of an unkind caregiver when her parents disappeared unexpectedly she
was only six years old.
For the next six years,
Mutesis mother was hunted,
relocated to the Democratic
Republic of Congo and Uganda, and lived as a homeless
woman outside of refugee
camps and in front of immigration offices waiting for
a country to accept her. She
endured these conditions in
hopes of one day reuniting
with her daughter.
Upon entering the theatre,
audience members were
greeted by traditional African
drumming and throughout
the show, were enchanted by
the dancing and singing of
Alueter Demshakwa, Mutesis

theatrical mother, and Mutesi

as herself. A unique aspect of
this show was the usage of
English and traditional languages, which were Kinya
Rwanda and Tiv, spoken by
Mutesi and Demshakwa.
The dancers were also
a major component of the
show, filling the space between the testimonies of
Mutesi and also reciting her
story through dance and
the usage of props such as
lengthy grass sprigs.
In addition to the emotional and moving side of Mama
Ararira, the play was very
much an interactive performance. As part of an African
tradition of encouraging community members to dance together, performers pulled audience members on stage to
join them in a group dance,
which can be interpreted as
a sign of tradition and the
relationship Mutesi now has
with her Canadian brothers
and sisters. Audience members were also given the opportunity to quiz the dancers
and actresses on the impact
that contributing to this type
of production had on them.
With the production of
Mama Ararira and New
Blood, a 2014 play about an
SHS student and his grandfathers experiences as a residential school student, Strathmore and SHS are becoming
increasingly interconnected
by each others diversity.
The timing of this production greatly impacted the
performers, as Canada and
the world are currently dealing with the difficult issues
of war and displacement of
the Syrian people who are
now entering our country. It
brings to life the importance
of our individual and collective identities. Even though
we were all born into varying
circumstances and cultures,
our individuality is often
what binds us together.

Original Joes helps

food bank associations
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Original Joes Restaurants
are in partnership for a third
consecutive time with Stella
Artois, Goose Island Beer
Company and Shock Top to
donate $0.25 from every pint
sold towards the Community
Pint program, where proceeds are being donated to
the Western Food Bank Associations.
The program is under the
umbrella of Original Joes
Community Cares Fund,
which encourages or challenges the restaurants to
fundraise for local causes.
Aiding in the promotion of
the initiative is their motto
Down There, Down the
Street.
We just like being involved in the community in
general, said Blake Chayer,
Strathmores Original Joes
managing partner. Its local food banks were usually
involved in, basically things
to help the community. [Its]
$0.50 from every pint. This
month its Goose Island,
so we actually contact the
brewers first and they donate $0.25 and we donate
$0.25.
Cheyer said they had previously been involved with
the Strathmore and District
Agricultural Society golf
tournament through sponsorship and spoke about the
importance of giving back to
the community that supports
their franchise.
We get all our business
from Strathmore people, so
to give back to them, it feels
nice, he said. I think it tells
them that were willing to get
involved in the community. I
dont know a lot of other res-

taurants that are doing that. I

think branding-wise it holds
true to our Down There,
Down the Street.
Executive Director of Alberta Food Banks, Stephanie Rigby said, that Original
Joes contacted the National
Food banks Canada and indicated their intentions to
do something in the western
provinces. The discussions
led them to contact the provincial associations for support.
I think in the past they
have often done individual
charities at each location
for the pint program, said
Rigby. They wanted to try
something different. They
wanted to do one charity per
province for all the locations
and see how that worked.
We were opened to that
but a part of that they also
wanted to do an event in the
restaurants that would benefit the local food bank where
the restaurant was located.
She added after the campaign is over there will be a
donation made provincially
and then the provinces association will work with 66
food banks, including the
Wheatland County Food
Bank, and they will provide
food, funding, programs and
services to the member food
banks.
We can get food and
money delivered to the food
banks to do their job better,
she said.
There are 66 food banks
across Western Canada in
the Original Joes Pint Program and to date there has
been $410,000 raised for the
Community Cares Fund.
The breweries and Original Joes donations will end
Jan. 31, 2016.

Farming students disappointed by Bill 6

SABRINA KOOISTRA
Times Junior Contributor

Arguably, the most controversial bill
in Alberta this year is Bill 6. Farmers
were infuriated by the new changes
that will and are being implemented,
and the source of most of this anger is
from the provincial governments apathy in addressing the actual concerns
of farmers.
Children who are growing up in Albertan farming families, many of which
are planning on pursuing a career
in this industry, are disgusted by the
changes.
Strathmore High School (SHS) students Layne Wilson, Connor McBean,
and Colten Stewart, participants in the
Green Certificate Training Program,
a course that awards farming students with their early-acquired farm-

ing knowledge, were particularly displeased by the legislations intentions.

Theyre trying to make it safer, but
the way theyre going about it is awful, McBean said. Theyre cramming it
down our throats whether we want it
or not.
The students also addressed the concern they feel for the destruction this
bill will have on the future of their and
other families multi-generational farming operations.
When you dont do it when youre
younger, you lose interest in it ... so
theres no one to take over this farm
and pretty soon theres no more farms
or ranches or anything ... pretty soon,
[farming] will just die out, Wilson said.
Not only will the next generation lose
interest in the industry, some Albertans
fear that current farmers may pull out
of their careers in agriculture.

FortisAlberta connects new customers and provides local electricity service to more than 200 communities
including rural Alberta. Call us at 310-WIRE (9473) for all of your electricity needs. | fortisalberta.com

Its going to be more work and people may not want to deal with the extra
hassle of it, and just say to heck with
it, McBean added.
Among the concerns for family farms
is the jeopardy that 4-H may encounter
due to this bill and the safety measures
it outlines. 4-H is a program with a variety of projects that members can take
part in, but with some safety hazards
present when tending to animals, it is
believed that Bill 6 may eventually terminate the program. Though the Alberta government assures that 4-H will not
be affected by the legislation, Albertans
are skeptical.
4-H is learn to do by doing. You
learn not to walk behind your horse because its going to kick you ... but if you
never learn that, or if you never learn
how to handle a calf or the best way
to feed your calf, youre never going to
know that, and thats kind of what 4-H
is about; learning that, Wilson said.
4-H is celebrated for being a program
that rewards members with credibility
and competence in important life skills
such as public speaking and community service.
It also teaches children of all ages
how to be responsible and to demonstrate a commendable work ethic in
any task that is presented to them.
A lot of kids learn from that experience Stewart said.
What made the students the most annoyed was the fact that Bill 6 was not
written by people who know first-hand
what the daily procedures on a farm
are, and so for them to restrict farmers
when they may not even know what
needs to be solved, seems illogical.
I think people that actually know
what work takes place on the farm,
someone thats lived or worked on
a farm (who) has actual experience
should have been in charge of writing
the bill so they actually know what is
needed and acceptable, McBean said.
Wilson agreed, Why should they
have that rule or why should they take
away parts of our lives if we were already taught by our parents? Its how
we were raised. You should already be
raised to know better.
In addition to the damage that may
be done to family farms, the students
agreed that all facets of agriculture in
Alberta will suffer.
Without the grain and raw materials
coming in from the farms there would
be less work at factories and processing and so people could lose their
jobs, McBean said.
But for Wilson, its affecting the province in more ways than just job losses.
So many people come to see Calgary
Stampede and for some people it might
just be to enjoy themselves, but for lot
of people, thats almost their culture ...
Canada is a multicultural country thats
supposed to be accepting of all of these
cultures and their rules even if its not
safe.

Strathmore to consider
annexation of Oxbow lands
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Following years of discussions and
strategic planning, the Town of Strathmore was asked to consider the annexation of the Oxbow lands, thus increasing
the areas possibility for overall growth
and providing the town with a greater
recreational opportunity as well as a senior assisted living facility.
The lands were considered for incorporation during the last annexation, but
the landowner at the time was unwilling
to commit. Civic Works informed council on Dec. 16, that the majority of lands
surrounding the Oxbow golf course
have now been obtained, and the organization expressed their desire to be
included within the town limits. With
lands that contain a 9-hole golf course,
the WID Canal, a Class 5 wetland, and
an expansion to the Sanderson Ridge
adult living facility, Civic Works Planning and Design and Telsec Property
Corporation, the owner of the lands,
remained optimistic that officials would
be interested in the long-term plan of
incorporating a senior-oriented, villastyle, low-maintenance community into
the town.
For me this is semi-urban, and its
half pregnant, said Kristi Beunder, senior planner with Civic Works Planning
and Design. It basically says were going to be villa low maintenance. Were
going to retain some things, and mix
uses in some places, but thats as far as I
can take it in the county reasonably and
digestively. If we are talking about this
being in the town of Strathmore, we talk
a little differently about the mix of use,
vibrant connections, celebration of the
wetlands and then the opportunity to
network.
The lands are currently located within
Wheatland County, on the towns western boundary and adjacent to the Lakewood Meadows development. If the Ox-

bow lands were to be annexed into the

town, Beunder assured council contributions would be paid, including water,
as well as for sanitation.
It just seems more comprehensible
more sustainable, she added. It provides a lot more recreational opportunity
in terms of pathway, wetland interpretation, and a number of other things to the
town. We have had conversations with
Wheatland County, and I think theyre
aware of the necessity for this ask. From
an overall growth management perspective it just makes more sense to be in the
town, and I dont think they disagree.
Beunder has been involved in the
project since 2011 and began a dialogue
with the towns chief administrative officer shortly after. In August 2014, permission was granted by the town to connect
to the towns sanitary system. Since then,
closer review and consideration led to
the conclusion that the area would be
better suited as a part of Strathmore.
I like the project, [but] its kind of a
catch 22 for me because I really feel that
as a community we have to stop growing and at some point start being concerned about our infrastructure, said
Councillor Bob Sobol. Spreading out
does not assist us, but I would also be
interested if a study is done in regards
to the possible costs to us in the future. I
would be very interested in seeing that.
According to Beunder, the information will be made available to the town.
Wheatland County had no comment,
but said according to the Municipal
Government Act, the Town of Strathmore would need to provide the county
with written notice prior to any discussions about annexation. At press time,
the county said this hadnt been done.
Council advised Beunder that the project was of interest to the council for the
future, and administration was asked to
continue their consultation with Wheatland County in regards to the annexation.

Brentwood reservoir
in need of repairs
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

The Band-Aid solution put in place
addressing the ever-deteriorating state
of the support columns in the Brentwood reservoir no longer mask the
dire, and possibly life-threatening, situation that requires nearly half-a-million
dollars in repairs well under budget
than was previously expected.
A whopping $1.1 million budget was
calculated into the 2015 budget year for
Brentwood reservoir repairs. Having
already spent $245,000 in inspections,
designs, and bypasses this year, the
$440,000 price-tag associated with the
upcoming repair projects cost came as
an unexpected surprise.
During 2015 we upgraded bypasses
worked on the water model for the town
to ensure that we were ok to bypass the
structure during repairs, and we also
worked on the design and scope for
the tender itself, said Acting Director
of Engingeering Bryce Mackan.
Once the repairs are done were expecting a minimum of five-year lifespan with possible scaffolding or other
means to support the reservoir until
upgrades or changes can be made to
the water distribution system.
Since 2009, the columns supporting
the roof structure of the reservoir have
been in a state of decay. As a result,
with regular inspections through Epcor
Utilties Inc., scaffolding was installed
to support the structure. However, the
failing support posts, a crack along
the outside wall showing leakage, and
concerns about sidewall deterioration
raised the repairs significance further.
They concluded that the reservoir is

at risk of failure and due to its close

proximity to residential and light industrial development failure of the tank
could lead to major property damage
and potential loss of life, said Mackan.
Long-term plan right now is that a
reservoir, similar to the Wildflower reservoir, was to be built on the east side
of town and at that time then Brentwood would be decommissioned. In
those long-term plans Brentwood was
expected to last until approximately
2025-2030. Brentwood is not going to
last that long.
The reservoir was drained in May
2015, to allow structural engineers
from Associated Engineering (AE) to
complete a thorough inspection and assessment. Mackan assured council that
expectations for greater deterioration
are low since the last inspection.
The project will include $340,000 for
construction, $10,000 for snow removal, $15,000 for disinfection after construction, $54,000 for contingency, and
a five per cent, $20,950, Epcor management fee.
While the repairs only address the
deteriorating columns inside the structure and the wall crack, AE provided a
report that stated a roof crack and deformation were also observed, further
reducing slab punching shear capacity
a type of failure of reinforced concrete slabs.
Council agreed to award Gabriel
Construction Epcors tender recommendation with the Brentwood reservoir repair project and approved the
$440,000 plus GST to complete the
project. Councillor Pat Fule and Councillor Rocky Blokland were absent during the meeting on Dec. 16.

For about 10 years, the Strathmore
Community Choir and Orchestra,
along with guest groups, have brought
the Christmas story to the stages of
Strathmores churches.
From Dec. 17-20, Agnus Dei - Lamb
of God Born to Us was presented at
Hope Community Covenant Church.
Each evening was filled with the festive feeling of the season and brought
people together from all denominations within our community.
This years performances were led
by conductor Marvin Gill and theatrical director Paula Furfaro, and featured
45 members from Strathmore InterFaith Choir, 19 from the Orchestra, 10
Strathmore Childrens Choir members,
five narrators, three dancers, and various children. Audience members were
treated to an evening of spectacular
music and encouraging words, which
were refreshing at one of the most
hectic times of the year.
The production began with an opening song by an eight-member ensem-

ble supported by the greater choir, and

throughout the show featured other
solos and duets by various members
of the community choir. The song selection was a delightful mix of classic
arrangements such as Silent Night and
What Child is This, with less common
pieces such as Lux Venit and This is
Love.
The narrators were also a significant
component of the story as they told
the story of Jesuss birth, what lead up
to the momentous birth, and the consequences this event had on humanity. Mary and Joseph were also represented, and were shown in moments
of intimate wonder at their new child
while their story was recited. The narrators were dispersed within the audience and assisted the dancers in leading the crowd in actions from one of
the songs.
Each rendition was unique in its
own right and received a standing ovation on the final performance.
It was a production for all ages, of all
ages, and is a Christmas tradition that
is expanding and strengthening with
every progressive year.

East Wheatland Schools board of
trustees revealed that, after the naming committee collected input from
students, parents and the broader community, the new school will be named
Wheatland Crossing.
Suggestions had included Four Corners and Prairie Gold, but the committee decided on Dec. 16 on their first
choice.
The committee arrived at their decision, because Wheatland represented
the county, wheat fields and and the
area, whereas Crossing symbolized an
intersection where everyone comes
together before carrying on their own
paths.
I think everybody is feeling quite
good about it, said Bevan Daverne,
Golden Hills School Division Superintendent. Its been quite a consultation
process. The committee is feeling good
about it. I think the boards first impression upon hearing the name, that its a
really good fit for the school.

Certainly the board respects and appreciates the work of the committee
and what they perceived to be a name
that makes sense and its a good fit for
the school and a representative of the
area.
According to East Wheatland Schools
spearhead, Greg Lendvay, the school
can begin to forge an identity through
branding, now that the name has been
revealed.
I think it represents the school very
well, he said. It allows us now to start
working on the branding of our athletics, the floor and all that stuff as we
continue to move forward now that we
actually have a name.
We havent officially revealed either schools colours to the student
body yet. Well start to brand and offer
toques for kids. The goal in May is to
have all school clothes, backpacks and
T-shirts purchased.
Overall, he wants all four schools to
be represented equally when the students come to the new one.
The reveal of the school sign will
take place close to the grand opening.

Concerns dominate re-designation

discussion on Waddy Lane
SABRINA KOOISTRA
Times Junior Contributor

Lack of parking stalls, inadequate water pressure, and traffic congestion concerns on Waddy Lane overshadowed
a re-designation request for a future
three-storey, 12-unit apartment building on Dec. 16.
The property, 303 Waddy Lane, is currently zoned R1 single detached residential district not appropriate for the
proposed project. The towns planning
and development department therefore
requested the parcel to be re-designated to R3 medium density modest residential district a new land use district
approved by council in November to
bridge the gap between lower density
district and the R3 district, which allows four-storey apartment buildings.
I dont have a problem rezoning,
because thats a given with the downtown overlay and what we expect, said
Councillor Denise Peterson.

One of the things that concerns me

is relevant to the water, storm water,
and sewer in this area. I know you said
the application wouldnt come forward
until 2016, [but] we dont have any
guarantee of that and we know in the
past thats been an ongoing concern.
Thats the kind of information I would
need, and the assurance I would need,
in order to make a bylaw amendment
of this nature.
Waddy Lane had come before council numerous times in the past in relation to low water pressure and traffic
concerns. The water and sanitary sewer
services in Waddy Lane from 2nd Street
to Wheatland Trail are planned to be
replaced in 2016, along with consideration for storm water servicing. The
project will require digging up the
street, replacing services, and repaving
the road. Yet during the Dec. 16 public hearing, residents spoke out about
their issues surrounding parking and
the narrow unpaved alleyway. While

stalls, one per unit, under the Land
Use Bylaw, neighbours to the proposed
complex argue that most residents in
the area own two cars and the streets
are already congested. Council was also
presented with photographs of vehicles
covered in snow that residents said are
only used in the summer time and are
parked on the street for the winter duration. Residents were also concerned
with the height of the building and privacy, increased traffic to the back lane
that remains unpaved, and water and
sewer. While Councillor Bob Sobol reminded council that the intent of the
request was for re-designation of the
land, he also expressed his concern
with the ongoing issues.
Im extremely concerned about that
laneway, and we have a lot of traffic in
there now it sounds like, and were going to have a lot more traffic and thats
not a paved road, he said.
The difficulty in bringing in a proposal for potential development is we
really have no idea what this is going
to look like when we get to the development permit stage. This is not a development permit application. This is a
Land Use change, so Ill be very honest
with you, I have some concerns about
the driveway, the laneway in the back,
and that right now is my main concern.
But thats really irrelevant to this application. This application is simply for
land use amendments. So I guess be
warned that when development permit
does come, I for one am going to have
some serious questions about access to
the back of that development.
Sobol added that a similar issue had
come to council previously and an
agreement resulted with the developer
paving the section.
Staff assured council that issues related to servicing and design issues will
be considered during the development
process. The matter will also need to
be reviewed by the Downtown Design
Review Committee.
Council approved the request to redesignate 303 Waddy Lane to an R3M
district from R1. Councillor Pat Fule
and Councillor Rocky Blokland were
absent during the regular council meeting on Dec. 16.

Bisons ready for Macs tourney

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The CFR Bisons are prepared to put their
skills to the test in the extremely competitive
38th annual Macs AAA Midget World Invitational Hockey Tournament in Calgary Dec.
26-Jan. 1.
The team is a co-host of the tournament,
along with four Calgary mens teams. While
the event also offers the athletes a chance
to play in front of their friends and families
over the holidays, the team is keeping their
eyes on the prize in hopes of winning the
prestigious event.
Dont think for a second were not out
there to win this tournament because wed
love to win this tournament, said Bisons
General Manager Wayne Hansen.
But its not our end goal. Our end goal
is to win a Telus Cup and thats still a few
months away. But at the same time, we tell
our guys to come into this, have fun, treat it
for what it is. Its a tournament, its an exhibition, its a chance to show your skills and
team skills to hundreds of scouts.
Hansen said that for some of the veterans
its a big Christmas gift to see the pool of
teams and expects them to lead the rookies
through the tournament.
It does a lot for their confidence, said
Hansen. It shows where they stack up
against some of the best competition in
Western Canada. Add on top of the exhibition games that we get to play against Europe shows where you stand skill wise. It
should let you know that youre on the right
path.
Head coach Sandy Henry has had a long
history at the Macs, with both his boys having played in it and being behind the bench
himself for the last few seasons as an assistant.
Its an honour, said Henry. I know what
it means to the guys because Ive had my
guys in it. Im enthused for myself but Im
more enthused for the guys. Theyre going

to be on the front line. They get their opportunities; there are lots of eyes on them.
The Macs in that respect is honestly about
the players. I hope they have fun. We want to
be successful as we can be and we want to
gain some momentum coming out the other
side.
With limited time to prepare for this tournament, Henry wants the players to come as
fresh as they can and just play their game,
sticking to what theyre used to by playing
fast through neutral zone and attacking with
speed.
Assistant Captain Quaid McBean is in his
second straight tournament and said while
its a great experience for the players involved, the team needs to be well rested in
such a short tournament.
I remember from last year at the end of it,
all of us were pretty tired, said McBean. I
think definitely (what) we can take from last
year is getting good rest, good hydration. Its
a fun time, its right around the holidays, and
youre with your family a lot.
He said communication will be their biggest ally in the tournament since most teams
are unfamiliar with each other and play different systems.
We dont know their systems, said McBean. I think if we stick to our systems and
our communication, I think well have a real
solid chance.
As one of the veterans on the team, the
key for him will be to explain to the younger
players to not let scouts and fans get in their
heads at all, and make sure they have fun.
The Bisons will open up the tournament
against the Yorkton Maulers on Dec. 26 with
puck drop going at 12:45 p.m. at Father David Bauer Arena. They will play their feature
game against the Ontario Avalanche at Max
Bell Centre on Dec. 27 (2:30 p.m.).
They will play the Lloydminster Bobcats
on Dec. 28 (11:45 a.m.) at the Max Bell,
while they conclude the round robin against
the Cariboo Cougars on Dec. 29 with face-off
going at 5:15 p.m. from the Max Bell.

Four Wheatland Braves players - Adam Kirkpatrick, Tristan
Zandee, Matthew Quebec and
Trey Gillis - will represent the
Zone 2 Big Country team at
the Alberta Winter Games in
February and compete against
other elite athletes.
Kirkpatrick was thrilled
when he found out he would
be participating in the event
and wants to make sure hes
productive on the ice when
the tournament arrives.
I was really excited, its going to be a great time, said
Kirkpatrick.
(I) just want to do the little
things right like get the puck
out and just help the team.
He added that the difference
between playing at the peewee
double-A level and the Winter Games will be speed and
physical strength.
Ill just go out and play my
game and have fun, he said.
Forward Tristan Zandee was
relieved when he received the
news and hopes to be a good
team player on the team and
be a playmaker.
I like to play a fast, quickpaced game but I also like to
play a smart game, said Zandee.
I also want to play defensive which Im working on as
the season goes because well
need some help back there.
He said he expects it to be a
great experience to be playing
with players that he doesnt
normally get to play with.
The 2016 Alberta Winter

The Wheatland Kings lost their last game before the league break 7-3 to the Coaldale Copperheads at the Strathmore Family
Centre on Dec. 19.

Kings stumble into break

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Kings had a tough weekend to
end 2015, when they saw a 3-1 lead disappear in
Banff on Dec. 18 en route to a 5-3 loss, before
suffering a 7-3 home loss to Coaldale the following day.
The team was down 4-3 going into the third period against Coaldale, and with too many lost opportunities, were unable to regain their footing.
I think we had an up and down game, said
local defensemen Brenden Moore. We were kind
of on a rollercoaster. I think keeping it simple in
our zone and neutral zone is where we went a
little wrong.
However, Moore said the boys are improving
more and more in those areas of the game compared to the beginning of the season.
We had a great offensive zone and when we

were cycling down low they couldnt touch us,

said Moore. We had a couple of nice breakouts
too where it was one, two passes and out of the
zone.
Brennan Fuoco, Brooker Pretty Youngman and
Lucas Jones scored in the loss.
Moore said that in the Banff game they were
the on the side of unfortunate bounces that ended up in the back of their net.
They got one off the wall, from behind the
net, one through a screen, its just like that theyre
back in the game, said Moore. We played fantastic its just a couple of bad bounces. Weve
had a couple of leads now that we let slip away.
Hopefully we get better at that soon. Well adapt
to that and learn how to play with the lead.
Pretty Youngman, Jayden Smith and Jacen
Bracko scored in the loss against Banff.
The Kings will begin the New Year at home
against High River on Jan. 2 at 8 p.m.

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The CFR Bisons were in top
form at home against the Lethbridge Hurricanes as they were
able to find a groove and run
with it en route to a 6-1 win on
Dec. 19.
We started off with the boys
getting a few good bounces and
pucks [that] just started going
in, said rookie forward Tyson
Scott. The momentum carried on
through the second period and

one went in after another. We let

off a little bit. But as a team we
found our way back playing better as a whole.
Scott added that they were able
to take advantage of the room
and were able to spread the puck
out well enough, especially on
the power play.
The power play was working
good for us tonight, he said. I
think we had two on the power
play which was good. A lot of
teams are not used to the size and
the conditioning as well. I know

403-874-6486

we work out and were able to

take advantage of them that way.
Gary Haden led the way with
two goals, while Scott, Zach Vinnell, Kaden Hanas, and Jackson
Salt each tallied one in the win.
The team was defeated by the
Calgary Northstars on Sunday afternoon 4-3.
Haden, Tanner Foster and Cam
Shorrock scored in the road loss.
The Bisons will resume league
play on Jan. 3 when they host
the Knights of Columbus Pats at
2 p.m.

The Strathmore Community
Football Association (SCFA) performed an act of kindness last
week by donating their $500
Strathmore Christmas Parade
winnings to the Strathmore and
Wheatland County Christmas
Hamper Society to help with the
shortfall of donations this holiday season.
As a board thats what we determined to do with the prize
money, said SCFA president Carl
Seafoot. I think it was a good
thing to do and it was a nice
venue to do it to. Putting it somewhere where its going to help
people over this time of year that
are struggling.
Seafoot had entered the football float in the parade not
thinking of winning the money;
when they found out they won,
the association was wondering what they were going to do
with the money. The Strathmore
and Wheatland County Christmas Hamper Society was an easy
choice.
Chairperson of the Christmas
Hamper Society, Gwen Moggey,
thinks the donation made by
the football association will go
a long way in helping with the
shortfall of donations this year
and the future of giving in the
community.
The boys were a fantastic
group in that they would donate
their winnings to help those less
fortunate to have a wonderful

Christmas, said Moggey. I also

think the community of Strathmore is in really good hands with
youth setting such a wonderful example because those boys
arent very old.
Every donation helps. I mean
$500 is a substantial donation
but these boys are youth and
for a youth group to donate that
much, thats a lot of money.
The money was used to purchase the necessary food and to
make sure hampers got the supplies that were needed.
Town of Strathmores community services coordinator, Tracy
Simpson, said the winners were
picked by the public via social
media. Nearly 100 people voted
for two floats tied for first place,
and two floats tied for second
place.
I think its pretty great, she
said. Theyre not the only floats
that won thats donating their
money back, which I think is
great. Its nice to see that theyre
carrying it forward. The idea
behind the cash prizes was to
give incentives for more people
to participate in the parade and
grow the event. Its nice to see
them use the money for something extra.
The $500 has been spent on
margarine for 247 hampers.
Strathmore Pawn and Collectibles
also donated their $300 parade
winnings, to a veterans family in
Strathmore. Debbie Murray, Real
Estate Professionals, donated her
$300 winnings back to Canada
festivities for kids.

Merry
Christmas

how much we appreciate
your generous support, and
wish you all a very merry and
bright holiday season!

The Wheatland Chiefs took awhile to
get their legs going against the Foothills Bisons on Dec. 18, but once they
started to wake up, there was no looking back as they ended off the first half
of the season with a 7-2 win.
We actually played pretty good, said
Chiefs assistant coach Keenan Desmet.
The first half of the game was kind
of slow. We came out flat but the boys
came out in the second half of the
game and we took it to them. We actually played pretty good down low in
the offensive zone. We just never got
enough pucks to the net and didnt
really crash or bang to get the greasy
goals, but it all came together in the
second half of the game.
The team was only up 3-2 going into
the third period and the boys were
wondering what the games end result would be, and Desmet said thats
when veteran Ryan Skytt stepped up
his game and led the charge, adding
two goals to bring his total to four on
the night.
He came to play, said Desmet.
It was kind of the turning point
from the third period. Everybody came
together and dictated how we were going to win.
He added that for the team to be in
first place at Christmas break is a huge
accomplishment and from the association all the way down to the coaching
staff, they gave the boys gratitude for
their hard work.
Chris Rebeyka, Robert Butterwick
and Ryan Bell rounded out the offense
behind Skytt.
The local midget double-A team will
be on the ice in Lethbridge to begin the
New Year on Jan. 2 at 7:15 p.m. before
hosting Taber Jan. 3 at the Strathmore
Family Centre at 5 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Wheatland Warriors

received a reality check in their lone

game before the break as the North Division-leading Alberta Central Selects
defeated them 6-2 on Dec. 18.
Theyre the top of the North for a
reason, theyre not there just because
of luck, said Warriors head coach Cody
Brown. Theyre a good hardworking
team. Theyve got some good size
and if you dont bring your best game,
theyre going to make you pay for it
Brown said the boys started slow
which resulted in the team battling the
puck a little bit, which forced them
to make quicker decisions that they
werent used to.
Kyle Bray and Cole Berg scored in
the loss.
The Warriors will start the New Year
on the road in Airdrie on Jan. 2 at
2:15 p.m. and on Jan. 3 they will be
in Rocky Mountain House to face the
West Central Tigers at 3:15 p.m.
The Wheatland Braves ended off
the 2015 part of the schedule as they
beat the Okotoks Oilers 9-5 on Dec.
20, a game that second year forward
Tristan Zandee was pleased with, but
said there are some areas that can be
worked on
Its nice to get a win under our belt
so we can get some more confidence,
said Zandee.
We just need to tighten up some
little defensive things, so we can shut
down offensive threats (more) than we
have. I think we were burying opportunities today just got to get greasy.
Zandee scored four goals, Trey Gillis
had two, while Philip Raycroft, Kobe
Gosling and Bryce Benfield each tallied one goal.
However, the night before was not
the same kind of result as the Braves
were shelled in a 7-0 loss to the Medicine Hat Hounds.
The Braves next games will be Jan.
2 in Airdrie at 11:45 a.m. and Jan. 3 in
Taber at 1 p.m.

FAIR, Lorne Garry

1937 - 2015
Lorne passed away on December
18, 2015 at the Sagewood Seniors
Care Centre in Strathmore. He was
born in Calgary on March 22, 1937, the only child
of Gladys (Parsons) and Leland Fair. When his father was in the Navy, Lorne attended grade one in
Halifax. He spent the next year living with his Aunt
Leila and Uncle Hugh Wilson on their farm near
Mossleigh, Alberta and attended grade two there.
He loved this time with his cousins in the country.
When the war ended, he rejoined his parents in
Calgary and attended several schools there before
graduating from Crescent Heights in 1955. He
worked for several oil companies, including Husky
Oil, where he was a Landman for ten years. It was
here in 1967 that he met his future wife, Lynne
Mercer, from Strathmore who was working in the
Geology Department. They were married on April
20, 1968 and both continued working for Husky
until 1972. They left the city to begin a new venture of farming north of Strathmore, starting from
scratch to fulfil a desire Lorne had for becoming his own boss. He designed and built a unique
round barn and they started raising sheep and
cattle, and ventured into a custom haying business. Being self-reliant and pragmatic, he also
possessed skill in several trades and believed he
could accomplish his dream with hard work and
determination. He was a very practical problemsolver and could build or fix almost anything. With
Lynne as his patient and faithful workmate, they
farmed for over thirty-five years before retiring into
Strathmore in 2007. They always shared a love of
music. For many years Lorne was an enthusiastic drummer with dance orchestras, namely the
Valleau Combo and the Night Hawks, playing
steadily both in Calgary and many surrounding
areas. Lorne was predeceased by his parents, Leland in 1976 and Gladys in 1978. He is survived
by his loving wife, Lynne; three children, Taralynn
(Kim) Craig of Coaldale, Cindy Burgess of Calgary,
and Gary (Olga) of Fort Saskatchewan. He has
seven grandchildren, Jeffrey Burgess, Jacqueline
(Dan) Burke, Rhanna (Jeff) de Boer, Tamara (Troy)
Craig, Gregory (Nicole) Craig, Brendan Fair, and
Shannon Fair. He also has 5 great-grandchildren,
Emily, Dustin, and Brenden de Boer, and Alex and
Esme Burke. A Celebration of Lornes Life will be
held on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at Strathmore United Church at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made directly to the Strathmore Handibus Association (680 Westchester Rd,
Strathmore, AB, T1P 1J1). To send condolences,
