FOUNTAIN HILLS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

IN TOUCH
Fountain Hills, AZ

January 2016

From Elder John Skewes

WHAT IS THE VALUE OF OUR CHURCH?
As the Chair of the Finance Committee,
most items that cross my desk are financial in nature. Dollars and cents.
Debits and credits. Pluses and minuses.
It is not unexpected, then, to periodically have a congregant ask me what is
the value of our church? When this
occurs, I look at them with steely-eyed
unwavering confidence and say it depends. And what it depends on is the
definition of value.
In classic accounting theory, asset value is something with
reasonably expected future economic benefits. When you
purchase, say, a new air conditioner, you consider it to have
value as it will provide you with the benefit of cool air in
future periods. Contrast that with a huge bowl of chili in front
of you. The benefit to you in the future, and to those around
you for that matter, is dubious at best. No asset value there.
There is also market value, generally defined as the highest
price a willing buyer would pay and a willing seller would
accept - when both are fully informed in an arms-length
transaction. A propertys market value can be driven by its
location. Our church property sits on a hilltop which increases its desirability, and hence its market value. It is almost always better to be higher than lower. In times of war,
troops seek the high ground as it is easier to defend and you
can reap havoc on those below you. In medieval times, before
indoor plumbing, it was far better to be up the road.enough
said about that.

We should not forget intrinsic value. This is the value assigned to something after considering both its tangible and
intangible factors. Intrinsic value originates from "inside." It is
a condition that is good or desirable stemming from within
somethings basic structure. As Gods children, we all have
intrinsic value in His eyes for He loves us for our own sake whether we deserve it or not.
But above and beyond all of these is spiritual value. These
are the values which benefit our souls, motivate us toward
worship, and connect us consciously (or perhaps even unconsciously) with the Lord. Our churchs spiritual value transcends any monetary value anyone could assign to our building and grounds. In John 2:19, Jesus says, "Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days." While there are
several interpretations to this, I have always inferred two
things from it: (1) It is the Lords people themselves, and not
the physical temple, that make the church, and (2) the City of
Jerusalems building inspectors were faster than the Town of
Fountain Hills. So, while it is prudent to be cognizant of the
value of our earthly possessions, let our eyes gaze more towards Heaven, where we will see future benefits up on that
hilltop by the spiritual values our faith has originated inside us.
As long as we are together as a congregation, it is the spiritual
values of Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church that matter to
me. It wouldnt concern me if we are gathering in the local
Circle K, as long as Pastor Bill is preaching by the Slurpee
machine, Debbie Fisher is singing in the candy section and
Harry Grider is shouting encouragement from the frozen food
section. I am home. That is what I value. And it is priceless.

Our Session is recommending that FHPC depart PC (USA) and affiliate with ECO
Presbyterians. We will host a family meeting on Sunday, January 10 after the first
service to share our reasons with you. Please plan to be there and watch your mail
for a letter with more details.

November income exceeded November Budget by

$1,710. November expenses were higher than the
budget by $1,578. We are coming to the point in the
year when last minute expenses are turned in and
when we must meet the limit set by the bank for the
mortgage. Overall, year to date income has exceeded
year to date expenses, which hopefully should give us
a cushion to meet the end of the year expenses.
Thanks to all of you for helping us meet our obligations, as well as manage wonderful programs and missions for our church family to participate in.
Respectfully,
Linda Lull, Treasurer

Beth Moore StudyJanuary 2016 March 2016
Come join us for DanielLives of Integrity, Words of Prophecy. Finding himself living in an ungodly culture, Daniel shows us how to live a life of integrity facing the kind of pressures and temptations Christians encounter today. The second portion of Daniel explores thrilling prophecies from the

Center on Monday nights at 6:30 PM and Tuesday mornings (starting January 5th) at 9 AM. Let Marta

word in our heart will help us to bear much fruit? Make a spiritual investment in 2016. You will

Mission Ministry
In the beginning was the
Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God. John
1:1
As I read this in the new year, I need to
remind myself that the answers I seek are
in the word of God. Those tasks he wants
me to do this year are written in His
word. One of the most written about
quotes is do unto others as you would
have them do unto you. This is why we
Terri Schmidt, Elder
here in the Mission Ministry feel so adamant about helping those in need of food, clothing, or any help
we can give them. As we start this new year, we look forward
to helping those we have helped in the past as well as partnering with new friends to do God's work. Let me say that I am
looking forward to doing all that I can in 2016. But first here is
a report on our projects that finished off 2015.

Indian Angel Tree

We finished off the year partnering with Fort McDowell and

too many women and children living there to continue to

buy them each
something for
Christmas. But
we do want
them to feel
supported and
loved by others.
We also helped
out with money
for their Christmas dinner.

Christmas Dinner for 4 Families

We again, this year, purchased Christmas food items for
4 families with students attending Fountain Hills High
School. We purchased items like canned green beans,
canned corn, stuffing, gravy, canned fruit, jello-o, marshmallows, potatoes, as well as some fun things like apple
juice, hot cocoa mix, candy canes and tins of popcorn,
Then we added gift certificates from Safeway, so they
can purchase their meat, milk or fresh food. This is
something we started doing several years ago when we
found out that there are so many needy families here is
Fountain Hills. We let the school know we want to help
one family from each of the grades and they know which
families are the neediest. This is done anonymously, and
as a contest so no one feels embarrassed. We feel grateful and blessed to be able to help four families at least for
a couple of important meals.

helping the homeless Indians in downtown Phoenix. The committee and the congregation bought necessities for 40 homeless
Native Americans. Thank you to all who so generously give to
those less fortunate than us. These 40 backpacks went along
with the 180 that Fort McDowell took downtown. It is always
nice to be able to help others with their projects as well as our
own.

Changing Lives Center

We helped this Center out again this Christmas Season. After
talking with Mark Tullis, the Director of CLC. We decided
that we would purchase games and projects families can participate in as well as individually in the game room. There are

Extended Hands Food Bank
We continue to collect food for the food bank each Sunday. Thank you to all who continue to help us with this project. This food goes to great use. Our food bank has over 300 families on their roster, these are Fountain Hills and
Fort McDowell residents only. The food bank is mostly dependent on donations, but they do have some fund raising things like: the Friday Night Fish Fry, the soft ice cream at the fairs, homemade cinnamon rolls at the fair, and
some lovely ladies make homemade gifts that they sell at the FridayFish Fry's and all the money goes to Extended
Hands Food Bank. So you can see we are a big help with our Sunday collection and special frozen Turkey collections. Thank you!
The local Ministerial Association has a collection for the Food Bank at both the Sunrise Service as well as the Thanksgiving Service, both in canned goods as well as monetary offerings. The monetary offereings go into what is called the Good Samaritan Fund. This is used for rents, car payments, utility bills, and even groceries. This money is distributed by the EHFB also after
careful screening. The local Pastors and Ministers will send people there who stop by and ask for help. The first question is, Are
you a Fountain Hills or Fort McDowell resident?
As I close this newsletter for January, it will be with a sad and happy heart. I will be turning over the Mission Eldership to
Jack Reynolds. He will be a wonderful Elder and I will remain on this committee doing all I can, as I so love working with these
projects. I have loved leading this committee in the directions we have been going, and am looking forward to following Jack and
the direction he chooses. So be sure and say welcome to Jack and the new Elders and give them a pat on the back for all their hard
work. May God Bless you all in 2016.

thanks to all of you who very graciously donated some sweatshirts/

Stormy Water - Faith

Matthew 4:22-33

WINTER GATHERING
Presbyterian Women will present their
first event of the New Year on Saturday, January 23, 2016 in Fellowship
Center. The Winter Gathering will be
hosted by Evening Circle with a carryin brunch served at 10 a.m. You will
be greeted with the music of Patsy
Knoy sharing her amazing gift at the
piano.
The Honorary Life Membership will
be presented at the brief business
meeting. This significant award is
given in recognition of faithful service
to the PW organization, church and
community. The recipient is unaware
of the committees choice prior to the
announcement.

A Book Shower to benefit our Church Library will be held

during the Gathering. New and gently used books about the
Christian faith may be donated, but please check the present
inventory to see if it is one of the 1500 books we already
have. There are so many novels in inventory there is no longer room for many
more unless it is a recent release of one of the popular series such as the Miss
Julia books. A Wish List of books we would like to have has been posted on the
bulletin board in the Library. Sign your name next to your selection to prevent
duplicate title donations. Monetary donations to purchase books or other enhancements to the library are also welcomed with checks to be made payable to
Fountain Hills Presbyterian Women marked Library. You may leave your donation at the church office if you are unable to attend the Winter Gathering. Donations may be designated in Memory/Honor of someone significant in your life.
All donations will be dedicated at the Gathering. Your continued support is appreciated!

Along with amazing vistas, another of the many advantages of living in our beautiful town is the extensive collection of public artwork displayed throughout the town center. The Winter Gathering program
will feature Fountain Hills Cultural & Civic Assoc. Chair, Sandi
Thompson and Jerry Miles reviewing eclectic and interesting sculptures
included in the Fountain Hills Public Art collection, one of the largest in
the Southwest. You will view some of the new pieces as well as some
old standbys, possibly one of your favorites. Be prepared to see beautiful sculptures that have been acquired by donation from friends, relatives and residents. No tax dollars have been used, thanks to many wonderful, generous people.

The Meaning of Epiphany

Epiphany, which comes from the Greek word epiphaneia, means an appearance or a revealing. Centuries ago, the Church set aside January 6, the
12th day after Christmas, to mark the revealing of Jesus as Christ to the wise men, who were Gentiles. Jesus first followers were Jewish, so the revelation of the
divine Christ to the non-Jewish magi reminds us that Jesus came to earth to save the whole world.
Symbols of Epiphany include light, a star, a crown (or three crowns} and a globe or stylized portrayal of the world. The color of Epiphany is green to
symbolize life, growth, hope and eternity. On the church calendar, the Epiphany season lasts until Ash Wednesday, which is determined by the date of Easter.

Basic Training Deja Vu

Reclaiming truth we are in danger of neglecting
Led by Pastor Ken, using video vignettes from Francis Chan, a riveting and masterful
teacher. Chan will challenge us to review and master certain basics teaching about our walk
with God

Fear God WHAT?

Fear of God is love on its knees. And because you're on your knees, your knees aren't
knocking. It might be just what youre missing.

Holy Spirit WHO?

Often treated as the Cinderella of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit often does not get invited to
the main event. Find out why we need Him there . . . at all times.

Follow Jesus WHY?

Hes not here anymore so how can I hope to follow Him . . . and where will He take me? It
is lifes greatest adventure. Dont miss the ride.

Always doing a new thing

In 2015, scientists discovered more than
18,000 new species ---some ancient and
extinct, others contemporary. They include a cart wheeling spider, fossils of a
feathered dinosaur, a beautiful sea slug
that photographs in brilliant blues, reds
and golds, a Christmas-colored plant that
grows in near isolation in Mexico, and a
pufferfish whose males make intricate
seafloor crop circles as spawning nests.
Such discoveries regardless of how old
or new the species are demonstrate the
ongoing creativity of God, who both does
new things and gives people new abilities
to discover them.
Recently, we began a new church year
with Advent. At Christmas, God did a new
thing by becoming human. Now we
launch into a new calendar year, in which
scientists will surely discover more new
creatures. The newness all around us
reminds us that God is always doing a new
thing in our lives too!

The Ultimate With-God Event
The ultimate with-God event has a name. The name is Emmanuel. God with us. How has the reality of God taking on
human flesh, living among us personally and corporately
changed the way you look at and live life? What a beautiful
season of waiting, preparing, releasing and receiving we have
had in various experiences. Here is one experience:
Some of the children of our church entered into a Christmas
story written by Debby based on Matthew and Luke chapters
1-2 and selected special scenes that were meaningful to
them. They creatively drew the scene with water colored pencils and then brushed with aqua brushes and some paint, if

time permitted. These illustrations were then held up

as the story was re-told and offered to God in
prayer. A Christmas Book was assembled from these
artistic offerings of our children. A Christmas Book
for Children By Children entitled, It Is Time. What a
gift! If your child and grandchild did not receive one,
please contact the church office. We would be happy
to give you a copy. It reminds us that the Joy of Christmas is not in the presents, but in His Presence!
Thank you for the beautiful Christmas cards and fun
and edible gifts! My husband and I have had a tradition since our girls were very small. Every card or gift
tag received, we placed in
a basket. Each dinner time
we would have the girls
select a card from the basket. The card was re-read
and the family prayed for
before we ate our
meal. Many times we
would than share memories
of the person(s). Although
we do not have our daughters living with us, we con- Debby DeBernardi
tinue the family tradition. We look forward to remembering you! Remembering is another way of saying,
We Love You!.

This and That

AS I AGE, I REALIZE THAT:
1. I talk to myself, because sometimes I need expert advice.
2. Sometimes I roll my eyes out loud.
3. I don't need anger management. I need people to stop pi**ing me off.
4. My people skills are just fine. It's my tolerance of idiots that needs work.
5. The biggest lie I tell myself is "I don't need to write that down, I'll remember it."
6. When I was a child I thought nap time was punishment. Now it's like a mini vacation.
7. Even duct tape can't fix stupid, but it can muffle the sound.
8. Wouldn't it be great if we could put ourselves in the dryer for ten minutes;
come out wrinkle-free and three sizes smaller.
9. If God wanted me to touch my toes, he would've put them on my knees.
10. When the kids text me "plz" which is shorter than please. I text back "no" which is shorter than "yes".
11. At my age "Getting lucky" means walking into a room and remembering what I came in there for.

The Nadine Hennesey Story
When YOU Dont See HIS Plan
By Nadine Hennesey with
Rebecca Baker
Nadine Henneseys personal story begins in the European
territory of Kosovo. She had joined an international team
assisting the survivors of the civil war that had torn the
country apart. Because of bombed out schools and lack of
surviving teachers, children were on half-day shifts, and
the need for education was uppermost in the minds of the
survivors. Nadines job description was to help orphans
and semi-orphaned children which would be in addition to
the public school programs. It would also supply the need
for organized activities for the children, a safe place where
they could be off the streets. The center was to be called
the House of Laughter, and opened on September 15,
2001.
The path that led Nadine from the farmlands of Ohio to
war-torn Kosovo was not one she could have envisioned,
nor would have chosen, but she knew it was Gods plan
that had brought her there. And that was enough.
Nadine grew up with five siblings in a family where
church, education and family trips were important. Her
father worked in construction, and times were not always
easy. Nadine remembers praying as a family for enough
money for food in the coming week. During her years in
school sports and competitions, she learned other important life lessons. From her coach, Work as a team and
dont give up. From her grandmother, Faith is trust followed by action. From her dad, if youre going to win
this, youve got to do it now!
Nadine kept a journal and even in junior high school
she wrote about what she wanted in the man she married.
It matters that he loves God with all his heart and cares
about people more than things. He should have a sense of
humor, respect his parents, and love children. That man,
Edson Hennesey, walked into their church in January
1987. They became friends, and after Nadines college
graduation later that year, dating became quite regular. In
conversations about his family, Ed told her he felt ready to

follow his dream of missions in Peru and had enrolled for

more training in Spanish. Their teaching careers kept
them miles apart for more than a year, but on July 1,
1989 they were married, and their first home was in Hollywood, Florida. By April Ed was offered an interim pastoral position in his home church in Port Huron, Michigan, which they accepted.
On Memorial Day weekend, they shared the news of
Nadines pregnancy with family. What a wonderful surprise for everyone. But on one was ready for the shock
that came on June 6, 1990, when Ed experienced a cardiac arrest and died in his office. A widow in less than a
year of marriage and a baby due in less than five months.
How does a young woman cope with that?
Nadines family encouraged her to move back to Ohio
for the birth of her baby, which she did, and Lydia arrived on November 2, 1990. Ten months later Nadine
accepted a teaching job in Michigan which continued for
three years. With thoughts for kindergarten for Lydia,
plans Ed had made years ago for mission work in Peru
surfaced; Nadine knew she wanted to follow through
with what they had believed was Gods plan for them.
Nadine and Lydia had very good experiences in Peru,
which caused Nadine to attend a conference in Pennsylvania to learn and train for other work in the mission
field. When a position for Orphanage Director was offered, Nadine knew it was meant for her.
The stories Nadine writes about their years in Albania,
India, back to Albania and eventually in Kosovo, are full
of joy and heartache, success and failure, praying to God
for guidance, and listening for Gods answers. As she
waited for her baby to be born, Nadine was thinking Im a wife without a
husband about to become a mother.
And what will I do to support a
baby? And Father, please call me to
a ministry I could not have done
while I was married. . . Something
unique to my situation.

Hate vs. Love

Civil-rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. compared hate to an unchecked cancer, saying it corrodes the personality and eats away
its vital unity. Unfortunately, the destructive force of hatred is often evident in nations, communities, families and even churches.
The obvious though not always easy antidote to hatred is love As The Message translation of Proverbs 10:12 states, Hatred
starts fights, but love pulls a quilt over the bickering. The image of a comfy quilt symbolizes the soothing impact that loving words and actions can have on enemies as well as friends.
Plus, its tough to share the gospel without showing love, which social reformer Elizabeth Cady Stanton called the open sesame to
every soul.

Music Ministry
"Happy New Year"!! As we
continue together in worship
and fellowship, may we all be
blessed by our Father's love,
compassion, mercy and
joy! We are blessed to have
so many truly beautiful people in this church, rich in
love, generous in talent and
open to anyone walking
through the doors of this
church. That's what hapDebbie Fisher, Director of Music
pens with God's love
working throughout the congregation then beyond the
doors as He expects of us.
I must compliment our Music Ministry for all of the
music of Christmas in our church. It was so intimate
and expressive. So many people came up to me
sharing their feelings, and how touched they were by
the selections. There were also many positive compliments based on the attire of the choir. I agree that
they look wonderful with the scarves and ties matching. I loved Christmas Eve, and the services that
have become tradition. The family service with our
young folks making the music. We must keep them
finding place in God's church. They are so valuable. Last month, I took my school choir to Fountain
View Village Christmas Caroling, and when we had a
request to sing "Away in a Manger" only 2 girls in the
choir knew it!! They were twins, and they sang it so
sweetly. I just couldn't believe the other kids didn't
know the song! They are great singers knowing a lot
of secular Christmas songs, but I wanted to tell them
to get themselves to church! That is a parental decision at their age. I love our children that get to
church. I see Bill making extra trips to get Annabelle

to our Wednesday rehearsals now, and getting her to

church to be with other children, Emerson, Summer,
Allie, Ashlin, Micah, Allie 2, Caitlin, Jillian and
Ela. These children are so important and their parents certainly know it!
I am looking forward to Men's Sunday on the
24th! It is so fun to see so many participate. They
always do a fine job, and it is nice for the ladies to sit
in the congregation. The ladies will return the favor in
April!
For those of you returning, remember you are always welcome to join our Music Ministry! We will always make room for you. The choir and the bells are
so much fun to be a part of. There is plenty of music
to keep us busy, and plenty of laughs with those involved. The talented folks tend to bring a lot of wit
with them to rehearsal! There is never a dull moment!! If you are ready to join in and sing with us,
please come on Thursday eve. at 6:00 in the Sanctuary. If singing isn't a strength, maybe you could try
ringing bells on Monday eve. at 5:30 in Tue Sanctuary. There is nothing like music to keep your neurons
firing and develope some fabulous friendships!
"May God be gracious to us and bless us and make
His face to shine upon us, that Thy way may be
known upon the earth, Thy saving power among all
nations. Let the peoples praise Thee, O God, let all
the peoples praise Thee! Let all the nations be glad
and sing for joy, for Thou dost judge the peoples with
equity and guide the nations upon the earth."
Psalm 67: 1-4
In Christ's peace,
Deborah Fisher
Director of Music Ministry

Member Spotlight . Did you know?

Jim & Arlene
Stewart
Many of you know
the beginning of the
story. On March 9,
2013 Jim and Arlene
were married, here
at Fountain Hills
Presbyterian Church
where they met and
fell in love. For Jim,
it was marriage after
40 years of being a
bachelor. A life
changing experience he says. For
Arlene, Jim was her blessing from God. Their first date
was attending the Church sponsored Diamondback baseball
game. Beginning a shared joy of attending ball games,
watching football and having a Fantasy Football Team with
Jims son.
Jim was born in Schenectady, NY but grew up in Munster,
IND . He has an older sister who lives in Canon City, CO.
with their mother, Marie who is now 101 years old. Many of
you may remember Marie when she lived in Fountain Hills
and attended FHPC. Jim referrers to his mother as one of the
most important influences on my life. The other was his father who died when Jim was in College. He taught him that
ones character is the most important thing you have.
Jims work career began in the Navy with service in Viet
Nam. He served in Naval Intelligence. After leaving the Navy
he began his favorite job, Vice President of a Mortgage Company in Flossmoor, Ill for seven years then retiring.

Jim has a son and daughter-in-law who have two girls. They
live in SugarLand, TX. His daughter and two grandsons, live
in Scottsdale. Jim often shares this advice, education is the
key to freedom.
Arlene was born in Detroit, Michigan and grew up in the lake
suburbs of St. Clair Shores, an Italian enclave settled by immigrants from Italy in the 1930s. Arlene grew up the middle
child with 5 siblings and a large extended Italian , Sicilian
family. Cooking, making wine and sausage and curing olives
was the mainstay of family life. Arlenes parents were first
generation Americans whose grandparents and many aunts
and uncles came to America through Ellis Island. It was there
that the family became Presbyterians. One could not leave
Ellis Island without a sponsor so a group of Presbyterians
decided to take the family under their wing. This group of
Italians began the First Italian Presbyterian Church of Detroit.
From her dad, Arlene learned to work hard, be honest and
do not bring shame to the family. Her mom taught her to
make bread and sauce and there is no playing until your
work is done. Arlene often did not get to play.
Arlene has one son who lives with his wife in Cedarburg, WI.
They have provided 6 grand children, 3 boys and 3 girls.
Together, Jim and Arlene are blessed with 10 grand children.
Arlene spent most of her working career in various educational positions. Beginning as a second grade teacher and
retiring as Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Michigan.
When moving to Fountain Hills in 2000, she worked for the
Fountain Hills Schools as Director of Special Education, retiring again in 2008.
Jim has been a member of the Church for 22 years and Arlene for 15 years. Together of almost 4 years.
They love and appreciate the family they have in the Church.
Both are ordained Elders, Jim serves as the President of the
Corporation, and Arlene is a seated Elder. Most often you can
find Jim talking sports and finance while Arlene will be in the
kitchen.

If you are sick, hospitalized or home recovering from illness, we want you to call the church and let us know! In a congregation like ours where people leave in droves for extended
summer months, it is easy for the staff, elders and deacons to
assume, when we dont see someone, that they are simply
vacationing away. The truth is that some of you are sick and
we are not aware of it.
You can help us by simply letting one of the staff know of your
situation. We have an excellent support system in place due to
the diligent efforts of our deacons. Help us serve you by communicating your situation.
