Newaygo County Mental Health’s Anderson honored with national visionary leadership award
NEWAYGO COUNTY — Mary An-
derson, board member of the Newaygo
County Mental Health and president of
the Michigan Association of Community
Mental Health Boards, has been recog-
nized by the National Council for Com-
munity Behavioral Healthcare as the win-
ner of the 2010 Award of Excellence in
Visionary Leadership. Anderson is being
acknowledged for her exemplary leader-
ship and commitment to a high quality
behavioral health care system that ad-
dresses the needs of consumers and their
families.
The mission of Newaygo County Men-
tal Health is to improve and promote the
quality of life of persons with, or at risk
of, behavioral healthcare needs and/or
developmental disabilities, who reside in
Newaygo County and surrounding com-
munities, by providing family and person-
centered services.
Anderson made this mission her own.
She began her advocacy efforts in com-
munity behavioral health after becoming
a member of the Newaygo County Mental
Health Board of Directors in 1992. Since
then, she has filled the capacity of each
officer position and is currently the vice-
chair. In addition, she has also served on
the National Council Board of Directors
since 2005.
“Mary Anderson’s long-standing com-
mitment to improve and promote the
quality of life of people with behavioral
healthcare needs and developmental
disabilities is inspirational,” said Linda
Rosenberg, president and CEO of the Na-
tional Council for Community Behavioral
Healthcare. “As a strong and powerful
advocate at the county, state and national
level, Mary works tirelessly to improve
the mental health needs of consumers
and their families.”
Anderson began her interest in public
service as a volunteer, helping the elderly
with their income tax preparations. She
became involved in government at the
township and county levels. She concur-
rently served on the District Health De-
partment #10 Board of Directors and the
Newaygo County Board of Commission-
ers. The sub-committees of those boards
on which she served included: the Parks
Commission, Human Services Committee
and the Substance Abuse Advisory Coun-
cil.
At the state level, in addition to serving
as the Chair of the Michigan Association of
Community Mental Health Boards, Mary
has also served on the Member Services
Committee, Children’s Issues Committee
and Legislative Committee. She has served
on the Board of Directors of the Michigan
Association of Counties, including three
years on the Board of Directors of the
National Association of Counties and as
a member of the NACo Human Services
Committee and Workers’ Compensation
Fund. She is also a member of the Michi-
gan Municipal Risk Management Author-
ity. Anderson also currently sits on the
Board of the National Council for Com-
munity Behavioral Healthcare and Chairs

Louise E. Grannis
Louise E. Grannis, age 84 of Howard City,
passed away peacefully, with her family by
her side, March 29, 2010 at
Clark on Keller Lake, Wind-
sor Manor in Grand Rapids
Michigan. Louise was born
January 23, 1926 in Croton
Township, Newaygo, Michi-
gan, the daughter of George
and Louella Hall. She was a
devoted Christian and a life
long member of the How- GRANNIS
ard City United Methodist
Church and Heritage Unit-
ed Methodist Church in Howard City. Louise
loved spending time with her family, traveling,
playing games, and reading. Louise made her
career taking care of her family and working
for the Village of Howard City as a deputy clerk
and a police and fire dispatcher for 26 years.
After retirement she and her husband Frank
traveled the world before settling at Polo Park,
in Davenport, Florida where they purchased a
home and spent the winters, while also return-
ing to enjoy Howard City each summer.
Her parents and a brother Donald preceded
Louise in death. She is survived by her hus-
band of 65 years Frank, two sons, Keith (Terri)
of Howard City, Bruce (Kim) of Moss Bluff,
Louisiana, one daughter Judy (John) Slatten-
gren of Rochelle, Illinois, four grandsons Allen,
Nathan, Jeff, and Jason, and four great grand-
children.
Funeral services for Louise were held at
Heritage United Methodist Church in Howard
City with Pastor Martha Beals and Pastor Brad
Brillhart officiating on Thursday, April 1, 2010,
at 11:00 a.m. Burial took place in Reynolds
Cemetery. Memorials to the American Cancer
Society or Heritage United Methodist Church
may be left at the Heckman Funeral Home in
Howard City. The family would like to extend
their sincere thanks to the staff at Clark on
Keller Lake for the loving care they gave Louise.

Rowena Hughes
Rowena Hughes, age 77, of Howard City,
passed away March 27th at her residence,
surrounded by her family and friends. She
enjoyed word searches, bowling, country mu-
sic, soap operas, her pet cats, and spending
time with family and friends. Surviving are
three daughters Penny (Harold) Larson of
Howard City, Delores (Dennis) Ellis of Grand
Junction, CO, Betty Johnson of Commerce
City CO, two sons Harold (Patricia) Hixon of
TN, Dale (Elly) of Bovey, MN, eight grand-
children and seven great grandchildren, and
many nieces and nephews. She was preced-
ed in death by her husband Harold, and two
brothers. Funeral services took place Satur-
day, in Coleraine, Minnesota at the Peterson
Funeral Home, with burial in the Lakeview
Cemetery in Minnesota.
Margaret Wilson
Margaret Wilson, age 87 of Trufant, passed
away March 24, at Spectrum Health Kelsey
Campus. She was born January 8, 1923, in
Sand Lake, MI, the daughter of Charles and
Marie (Christiansen) Tompsett. Surviving
are two daughters Carol (Ronald) Wood of
Gowen, Julie DuVall and Patrick Knotts of
Coral, 6 grandsons Michael (Michelle) Wood,
Martin Wood, Patrick (Brandy) Wilson, Paul
(Terri) Wilson, Daniel and Nathan Du-
Vall, great grandchildren Brandon and Bai-
ley Wood, Colten, Logan and Levi Wilson, a
sister Dorothy Rowland, two brothers Paul
(Sharon)Tompsett, Lewis (Charlotte) Peck,
and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-
ceded in death by her parents, her husband
Clare, and a brother Raymond Tompsett.
Funeral services took place Monday at 3:00
pm at the Heckman Funeral Home with Pas-

I
have some friends who
are going through a pretty
rough time right now.
Their 15-year-old daughter,
Emma, was diagnosed with
cancer, and if that alone wasn’t
bad enough, black mold was
discovered in their house. A
total renovation project had
to be undertaken before they
could bring her home from the
hospital. This caused a finan-
cial burden they were obvi-
ously not expecting.
A benefit spaghetti dinner
and auction was recently held
to raise money to help this
family with their expenses. My
husband and I attended, main-
ly to provide support for our
friends, but we got our pasta
and homemade dessert fix as
well. As I sat there enjoying
the great music provided by
local bands, I looked around at
the people in attendance. Some
I didn’t know, and some were
friends and neighbors I haven’t
seen since coming out of
winter’s hibernation. I was im-
mediately struck by the num-
ber of people there, as well as
the sense of levity in the room.
It was palpable. People were
smiling, laughing, hugging
and truly enjoying themselves.

City, held their annual award cer-
emony March 18, 2010, to honor
our KOPS (Keep Pounds Off
Sensibly) Chapter Queen, with a
weight loss of 31-1/2 pounds to
reach her goal, graduating KOPS,
and 9 Division winners for 2009.
Division winners are any TOPS
members who have lost 10
pounds or more.
Doris Stevenson was awarded
for 21 years as a KOPS and dur-
ing this time she has only missed
1 meeting, when her grandson
was in the service in Texas and
she went to attend his graduation
from Boot Camp. She is a dedi-
cated member. Attendance is a
great asset in our effort to reach
our goal.
Marilyn Williams reached
her KOPS goal August 10, 2009,
to become our Chapter Queen.
She will be honored at Chapter

All Tuned Up

Most of us know that regular mainte-
nance is key to a well-running vehicle.
That’s why we get our oil changed,
have our tires rotated and so forth.
Another important part of the regular
maintenance schedule is the tune-up.
Because the internal workings of ve-
hicles have changed so much over the
years, the definition of a tune-up may
vary from the simple replacement of
spark plugs to the complete overhaul
of several areas within the vehicle.
Most experts agree that the best tune-
ups involve an inspection of several
areas, including the battery, engine
mechanical, powertrain control, fuel,
ignition and emissions. Not every
shop defines a tune-up in this way,
however. Generally, the more in-
volved the tune-up, the more it costs.
When scheduling a tune-up, it is im-
portant that you find out what it will
entail and how much it will cost. Be
wary of really low estimates; chances
are the shop is pushing for your busi-
ness and the final bill for the tune-up
will be much higher.
The best shops understand that not all
drivers know what a tune-up is and
request one on the assumption that it
will fix whatever is wrong with their
vehicle. They will ask why you think
your vehicle needs a tune-up and go
from there. You may discover that
what you really need are new battery
cables rather than new spark plugs.
Once you have several estimates, sit
down and compare them. Select the
shop whose estimate includes a fairly
thorough inspection at a fair price.

you drive away from the shop your

The term “tune-up” means different
things to different people. Keep that
in mind as you shop around for es-
timates. Know what you are getting
before you take your vehicle in, and
if you are getting a tune-up for any
reason other than maintenance issues,
relay that information to the shop. If
you don’t, you could end up paying
for a tune-up plus a repair.

You’ve got the family in the car and you’re
headed for your vacation destination which is
eight long hours away. Within 15 minutes, here
it comes from the back seat-the question you’ve
been dreading: “Are we there yet?” Which begs
another question: How do you keep the kids oc-
cupied on a long car ride so your vacation isn’t
ruined before it starts? Here’s what you CAN’T
do: You can’t stuff the kids in the trunk. That’s
where your luggage is. You can’t tie them to
the roof of the car. They’ll create drag and cut
down on your gas mileage. Besides, if one falls
off, you’ll have to stop, pick them up and reat-
tach them, making it difficult to make good time.

use. The emotional and spiritual part of dreaming is to give us information
