KerniswasborninPhiladelphiaonJanuary15,1960.Hebeganhismusicalstudiesontheviolinatage12hebegan
teachinghimselfpianoand,thefollowingyear,composition.HecontinuedhisstudiesattheSanFranciscoConservatoryof
Music,andManhattanandYaleSchoolsofMusic,workingwithcomposersasdiverseasJohnAdams,CharlesWuorinenand
JacobDruckman.Kernisfirstcametonationalattentionin1982withtheacclaimedpremiereofhisfirstorchestralwork,
DreamoftheMorningSky,bytheNewYorkPhilharmonicatitsHorizonsFestival.Kernis'smusicispublishedbyAssociated
