What a fantastic year 2015 has been

and we look forward to 2016 with great
anticipation. All the estate agents in the
area have noticed an increase in business
and prices do seem to have evened out
and in some cases have increased possibly
due to the strength of the British pound.
It is good to see new faces around, many
of whom have already got involved in the
many organisations and charities on the
Costa Clida. If you have got a few hours a
week to spare, what better way to spend it
than helping others, whether it is humans
or animals. There is a full list of all the
organisations on page 43
We would like to thank all of our Contributors
who have regularly sent in articles of
interest to you, our Readers. Joe Holmes
of Don Tecnico is taking a short break from
writing articles, but he will always give you
sound technical advice if you call at the
shop in Puerto de Mazarrn. If anyone has
any requests for articles that theyd like
to see covered by Joe, please email us at
costacalidachronicle@gmail.com and
we will forward them on to Joe.
The final total for our Poppy Appeal
should be 510.61 although various people

have yet to pay us before we can send the

money to the Royal British Legion.
Although some businesses have taken
a break until February or March, we
would like to welcome the following new

Los Almagros is a small pueblo situated

between Cuevas de Reyllo and Fuente
Alamo in the Murcia region of the Costa
Clida. For the past 7/8 years it has
welcomed 3 British Kings on the evening
of January 5th.

Caspar and Melchior, alias Alan Kearney

and Eileen Leith-Brown and, for the last
four years, Barrington as Balthazar (who
caused no end of amazement for the local
children as previously Balthazars colour
would rub off !!) have entertained the local
community.
Eileen, Alan and Barrington start the
evening dressed in their King costumes,
walking around the village before arriving
at the local community hall where both
children and adults await, cheering and
waving at the Kings arrival. This is
followed by the giving and receiving of
presents, after which visits to the homes
of the elderly and infirm are undertaken
with the Mayoress Antonia Conesa.

during the evening of 17th November. This

year, therefore, we will see a new British
King, but Eileen will be joining them in
spirit and in the villagers hearts.

Sadly, Eileen will not be with them this year

as she passed away peacefully in her sleep

Happy New Year to you all from AAR.

2015 was a tough but rewarding year. So
much has happened good and not so good,
but I am very happy the way the profile of
the charity has been raised, not least with
the opening of the shop in Roldan and the
continued success of the shop in Mazarrn,
hitting that 4000 mark of supporters on
Facebook and the overwhelming generosity
of all our volunteers and supporters near
and far.
Last year we managed to rehome
approximately 45 dogs, 12 donkeys,
ponies and horses and 15 other furry and
feathered friends. We had to fight yet
another outbreak of Parvovirus, see many
of our animals through medical traumas
including operations, numerous spayings
and castrations, transfusions and an
assortment of drug-based treatments,
many of which needed hospitalization.
Several fundraisers, auctions and special
sales have helped us raise the money to
be able to do this, but we need to keep
this momentum going through 2016 and
I know deep down with our loyal army of
supporters and volunteers our work will
continue and grow.

However, one of the highlights of 2015

was the beautiful Narlia. I escorted her
personally to her new home in the UK last
month, from being at deaths door, battling
leishmaniosis, anaemia, ulcers and kidney
failure to name but a few. Some of you
may think why not just put her out of her
misery. Look at her now! This little girl is a
born survivor and she is now living the life
of riley with her new owners Caralyn and

Looking back over the year, another of

Amos what do you see? Amos 7 v 8.

It is simple really, but God was speaking
to Amos. He didnt really need to use His

God does?

Developing a Great Spanish Garden

With Minimum Watering Needs by Dick
Handscombe practical holistic gardener
and author living in Spain for 25 years.
How does your garden stack up?
Apart from the swimming pool terrace,
how much use did you make of your garden last year?
Does you take maximum advantage of the
Mediterranean climate we experience?
Is it a garden in which it is enjoyable to
walk around, work in, take siestas, eat out
in on most days of the year and at the same
time provide some of the familys fruit and
vegetables and perhaps even eggs?
Is it a garden that does not need to be
watered every day?
If not, we provide a basic framework for a
garden that matches an outdoor life style
with the garden developed as the main
room of the house for most months of the
year without constant watering.
A Framework For A Great Garden matches and enables an outdoor lifestyle
for most of the year by, amongst other
things, providing for summer shade and
sheltered winter sun. Only with these can
a Spanish garden become the most used
room of the house.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

An Attractive and Interesting Network

of Terraces and Paths - terraces of different sizes for different activities such
as cooking and entertaining, secluded siestas, sunning after a dip in the pool or
a quiet winters read. Pathways that lead
one from one attractive part of the garden
to another, opening up both internal and
external vistas en-route. Curving rather
than straight paths and the use of a variety of surfaces can add to the magic of
a new garden even before the first plants
are planted.
A Number of Interesting and Contrasting Mini Gardens, Patios or Corners
- the pool area treated as one of several
mini-gardens rather than the only feature
of the garden. If you only use it for five or
six months a year, why stare at it day in
day out throughout the year? Make each
side of the house a unique mini-garden for
maximum interest.
A Variety of Colour Schemes in Different Parts of the Garden - using plantings with the many hues and textures of
green foliage as well as the subtle or blazing colours of the flowers. Our book Your

Page 10

Garden In Spain Planning Planting

And Maintenance includes an important chapter in this respect chapter 2
Painting With Plants plus descriptions
of some 400 useful plants. Sufficient for
you to chose from whether on the coast or
inland. With the generally benign climate,
an amazing range of flowering plants, fruit
and vegetables can be grown, provided the
soil is first improved. Do be creative in
how you group the flowering plants and integrate the growing of fruit and vegetables
in cottage style or separate areas.
The
Use
of
Plants
With Interesting Architectural
Shapes
carefully sited groups of
palm trees,
cordylines,
cacti and aloes, or green
or
purple
leaved aeoniums
can
be as effective as a
bank of flowering shrubs. Most plants chosen for their
drought-resistant properties, once established have deep roots. A good selection
of such plants is provided in the appendices of the book How To Use Less Water
From Your Garden. This is easily available from The Book Depository or Amazon
Books.
Perfume Throughout The Year - starting as one passes through the entrance
gate and continuing around the garden.
Favourites include jasmines, roses, honeysuckles, galan de noche, san diego, frangipani, mock orange, citrus trees, freesias,
lilies, passion flowers, sweet peas, geraniums and naturally culinary and medicinal
herbs.

Solar pumps allow features to be located

safely anywhere in the garden without expensive wiring systems.
The Tasteful Selection and Placement
of Ornaments and Groups of Pots some of the latter left empty and others
planted up.
The Growing of Even Just a Few Seasonal Vegetables - that can be harvested
and eaten fresh especially if grown ecologically. Growing Healthy Vegetables
in Spain describes what can be grown
season by season. Autumn, the Second
Spring of Spain, is a good time to start
growing vegetables as you can sow or
plant many vegetables for harvesting during the Autumn, at Christmas, during the
Winter and in early Spring.
Attraction of an Interesting Range of
Beneficial Wildlife - ranging from geckoes on the walls at night that catch flying
insects to lizards on rocks and frogs and
dragonflies around the pond. Thick hedges
will not only give privacy, but nesting sites
for birds. Butterflies are unfortunately
less numerous in some areas than twenty
years ago due to urbanisations and the use
of agricultural and garden chemicals, so do
go ecological. Neem, our favourite insecticide, is now easier to find as Flower have
added two Neem products to their range.
No we have not mentioned a lawn. For us
it is not an essential ingredient of a great
garden or that natural in Spain. We would
rather spend the time and water required
to maintain a worthwhile lawn on flowering
plants and trees and eating well from the
garden.
Naturally you wont achieve such a garden
within a year unless very small, but do
have a clear vision of what you are aiming
for before you start.
Dick Handscombe

The Growing of a Variety of Herbs - for

use in cooking as well as for their natural
aromatherapeutic and medicinal effects.
Herbs can be grouped in a herb garden or
on a rockery, or spread around the garden
in mixed beds.
The Traditional Spanish Sound of Dripping Water From a Fountain - the running water of a waterfall into or between
ponds or a creative mini water feature.

Anthony
Horowitz
was
born
in Paddington,
London, into a
wealthy Jewish
family.
He was an
overweight
and
unhappy child
and
spent
much of his
time reading
books from
his
fathers
library.
At
the age of
8,
Horowitz was sent
to
Orley

peers by telling them the stories he had read.
Horowitz described his time in the school as
a brutal experience, recalling that he was
often beaten by the headmaster. At age 13
he went on to Rugby School, and discovered
a love for writing.
Horowitz is the author of the number one
bestselling Alex Rider books and The Power of
Five series. He has enjoyed huge success as
a writer for both children and the highly acclaimed Sherlock Holmes novel, The House
of Silk. He was also chosen by the Ian Fleming estate to write the new James Bond novel.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Horowitz has won numerous awards, including the Bookseller Association/Nielsen Author
of the Year Award, the Childrens Book of the
Year Award at the British Book Awards and
the Red House Childrens Book Award. In
2014 Anthony was awarded an OBE for Services to Literature. He has also created and
written many major television series, including Injustice, Collision and the award-winning Foyles War.

Different Shapes of Road Signs

Road signs provide a wealth of information
that not only keeps us safer on our journeys,
but also provides useful information.
Pictograms are used to allow us to absorb
the subject matter quicker than if we have
to read the information in text form and the
shape of the sign also tells its own story.
There are three basic shapes for road
signs.
There are actually another two but we will
talk about those separately.
The three main shapes are circles,
triangles and rectangles or squares.
Each one of those shapes tells us something
different.
Circular Signs Are Mandatory - they give
us orders. Its easy to remember if we think
of the O for orders. There are two different
types of circular sign.
Circular Signs With A Red Border tell
us what we must NOT do; for example, no
overtaking, no left turn, dont go over the
maximum speed indicates. Red circles tell us
what we must NOT do.
Circular Signs With Blue Circles are the
opposite, they tell us what we MUST do; for
example, ahead only, turn right, switch on
your lights, go around the roundabout in an
anti- clockwise direction. Blue circles tell us
what we MUST do.
Triangular signs are warnings - they give
us advanced information of a hazard ahead,
such as a pedestrian crossing, traffic lights,
road narrows ahead. Triangles are warnings.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Rectangular or square signs are advisory

or informative - they tell us something
useful, such as the recommended maximum
speed, no through road, or tunnel for
example. Some of the signs indicate areas
where mandatory rules also apply, such as
signs indicating the start of a motorway, or
on a one-way street or a bus lane, so it is
important to know which ones are which.
By knowing these basic shapes it allows us
to determine and process the information and
the importance of what we are being told.

The other two shapes, which dont fall into

any of the other categories because of their
uniqueness are the octagonal Stop,
sign, an almost universal symbol, which is
important because it is telling us to stop and
give way and the inverted triangle which is
also unique as that sign is also telling us to
give way to traffic on the major road. Both of
the signs are mandatory and are two of the
most important signs on the road.
Remember:
Circles Are Orders
Triangles Are Warnings
Squares And Rectangles Are Advisory
Information.
This principle is the same as in the UK and
many other countries too.
Transferring a Vehicle Following Death
In the event of a vehicle owner passing away,
there is a standard procedure for having
the vehicle ownership transferred to a living
beneficiary.
Article 609 of the Civil Code dictates the
modes of acquiring ownership of property
succession, and the administrative procedure
set out in Article 32.6 of the Reglamento de
Vehculos details the
process.
Provisional Transfer Of A Vehicle
Immediately after a death, the vehicle can be
transferred to a new named owner who may
not be the long-term benefactor, but may
seek ownership on a temporary basis. In this
event, the temporary custodian of the vehicle
has 90 days in which they must notify the
traffic department of this temporary custody
and their legal address.
The person registering the vehicle must
produce the following to the traffic
department:
A formal request.
The payment for transfer (the prices in
2015 were 52.80 for most vehicles,
26.40 for mopeds).
Identity documents.
Death certificate of the original owner
or marriage certificate stating the
death.
Document proving the possession of

the vehicle.
Driving license.
ITV card or technical status document
of the vehicle.
An appointment at the traffic office.
The new provisional holder is deemed as the
subject of any obligations corresponding to
the holder of the vehicle.
Final Transfer Of The Vehicle
The intended permanent vehicle owner must
apply for the final transfer of the vehicle within
a 90 day period. The intended permanent
owner must submit the same documentation
as above, but with two additions:
Certificate of liquidation or exemption
from inheritance tax.
Declaration
of
heirs,
or
will,
accompanied by a certificate of wills,
or document stating the award of the
vehicle.
You must also request a printed official form
that will facilitate the transfer of the vehicle by
the traffic department on behalf of the state.
If the applicant is a minor or incapacitated,
the documentation must also include the
additional data and signature of the legal
guardian or representative. You will also have
to pay the fees for the transfer.
If the applicant is an individual and a Spanish
national, the National Identity Document
(DNI) can be used in place of the driving
license.
If the applicant is a person of foreign
nationality, there are other processes to
consider. If a Green Card is in force, that must
also be presented, or, failing that, the official
Identity of the country of origin (for citizens of
other Member States of the European Union,
the other States party to the Agreement on
the European Economic Area and the Swiss
Confederation) or Passport or Certificate
of Citizenship if you are a citizen of a third
country with the Foreigner Identification
Number (NIE). You may also have to produce
the original document attesting to your
home in Spain if you are not registered with
foreign identity documents (e.g. certificate
of ownership, lease, or police census card or
certificate).
If the new owner is a legal entity or company,
rather than an individual, you will also be
required to produce the following:
Original Tax identification card (CIF).
Original ID, passport, identity card
and NIE
Original document attesting to power
to act on behalf of the company
(available from the www.dgt.es
website)
The process seems a very complicated one,
especially given the time frame in which it
must be completed, but the process is also
a standard administrative procedure and so
your advisor or lawyer will be able to advise
you further. Always obtain advice from
registered, legal representatives in Spain if
there is any doubt.
Our associates at PSI Consultants offer legal
and fiscal advice for a range of different topics

services and more. Visit the website for more

What is IPTV?
Internet Protocol Television is a system
whereby digital television services are
delivered over the Internet using Internet
Protocol.
The video channels and programmes
are delivered to the television through a
broadband connection, instead of being
delivered through the conventional cable
or broadcast formats. The video streams
are encoded into a series of Internet

through the public Internet which can be

humanism was found to be difficult as in the

republican soldiers who had been captured.

It was in retaliation to the bombing of Aguilas
by Italian planes when 200 people had been
killed.
The return path passed through some
impressive villas, probably owned by
politicians of the area.
Lunch was in Mason Papa and was enjoyed by
most, after some confused order taking by a
smiling camarera.
The next (proper) walk will be in January and
will be to the Blue Lagoon.
Easy Rambling
20 Humanist Members and friends met at the
harbour in La Azohia for a gentle stroll up the
rambla to Campillo de Adentro. There was a
stop at the edge of the pueblo for a short talk by
Rhian on Christopher Hitchens interpretation
of the 10 commandments.
Another stop was made at the Campillo bar
and Social Centre for drinks and then the
group set off to the old Guardia Civil barracks.
There are several differing explanations of the
original use of the building. (Jon would have
thought of a few (im)plausible suggestions).
The walk returned back down the rambla
and some walkers who had not expected to
complete the walk excelled themselves by
doing just that.

The
discussion
centred
round
another
quote
from Keynes When the facts change, I
change my mind. What do you do?
It started with a quiz How Humanist are
you? There were no absolute answers, but
the percentages were based on the answers
selected by most humanists.
To see the Quiz Questions, go to the BHA web
site at
https://humanism.org.uk/humanism/

There was agreement that there are no
gods. There is only one life and one should
make the most of it by making decisions
that promote pleasure and happiness and
prevent human suffering taking account of
one anothers needs and interests. It was also
agreed that superstition and the supernatural
are myths. The discussion and debate was
centred on questions 2, 6 and 9 of the quiz.
The problem of trying to find a definition of

The walk went out of Jarrava though the

countryside just above the railway line from
Aguilas to Lorca.
The group went past
an old ruin, which had been used by the
stationmaster. The railway had been a British
project built in the 19th century. The line has
not long been reopened after major repairs
following the Gota Fria of 2013. Everyone
waved as the 10:30 express from Lorca
passed, but there did not seem to be any
passengers on board.

The mornings discussions during the walk

gravitated as expected to the French murders
and how society could cope with such
incidents.

Mike followed the path around a hill with

interesting sites of an electric sub-station,
lots of pylons (many not connected) and a
sewerage works (complete with bad smell).

Lunch was held at La Chara Restaurante,

Isla Plana for their usual excellent Menu del
Dia.

Why Properties In Southern Spain

Tend To Crack Horizontally Beneath
The Roof Slabs
Horizontal cracking under the roof or
terrace slabs is probably the most common
building defect in southern Spain. The
defect is easy to identify as they generally
have a perfectly horizontal direction,
beneath or on top of concrete slabs.
The cause that produces this fault is
differential expansion and contraction
(due to drastic temperatures in summer
and winter) of roofs or terraces which is
different from the expansion of walls,
some of which are never hit directly by
solar radiation.

St Francis
s a i d ,
Bernard,
we
must
take counsel
of the Lord
Jesus Christ
and
pray
to Him that
He
may
be
pleased
to
show
us what is
His will. St
F r a n c i s
took up the
Missal, then,
having made
the sign of the holy cross, he opened it
three times.
The first place which he lit upon was at the
answer of Christ to the young man who
asked of him the way to perfection: If thou
wilt be perfect, go, sell all that thou hast

It is a minor building defect and cant be

considered structural.
Repairing
the
cause
is
technically
impossible, as eliminating the borders
of the crack and re-rendering the area,
the crack will reappear. The easiest and
cheapest way to approach the problem is
just a cosmetic repair of filling in the crack
with a neutral silicone or with an elastic
mortar, decorating afterwards to unify the
finishing colours.
Requesting a Structural Survey is now
common practice in Spain, as it is affordable
and typically proven to save clients money
by avoiding problem properties. For the
nominal cost of 70 + IVA, Martinez de la
Casa Architects offer a Building Survey

and give to the poor and come, follow me.

The second time he opened at the words
which the Saviour addressed to the
Apostles when He sent them forth to preach
the Word of Truth: Take nothing with you
for your journey: neither staff, nor scrip,
nor bread, nor money; wishing to teach
them thereby to commit the care of their
lives to Him, and give all their thoughts to
the preaching of the Holy Gospel.
When the Missal was opened a third time
they came upon these words: If any one
will come after me, let him deny himself,
and take up his cross, and follow me.
Then St Francis, turning to Bernard, said:
This is the advice that the Lord has given
us; go and do as thou hast heard; and
blessed be the Lord Jesus Christ who has
pointed out to thee the way of his angelic
life.

Another New Year to look forward to and

another year to look back on with many
fond memories.
Probably the most significant event was when
Maddie Munday joined us as our Director,
bringing with her a lifetime of experience
as a choreographer with a particular love of
the musicals. Weaving her magic, she has
transformed Masquerade with her simple but
very effective dance movements which are
loved by all; the Chorus and audience alike.

Our two Christmas Shows were enjoyed

by all who attended. Our performance at
the BuenaVista was as expected very lively
and boisterous, with standing room only,
whilst our attendance at The Forget Me Not
Christmas Luncheon was different, but in a
very special way.
Forget Me Not is a small charity dedicated to
providing support to those whose loved ones
suffer from Alzheimer, a disabling illness which
results initially in short term memory loss,
followed over time by increased interference
with daily life as the condition progresses.
It leads eventually to total confusion and
the need for 24 hour care. Sometimes it is
accompanied by a change in personality,
not always for the better, so it was a great
pleasure to entertain not only the carers at
the Christmas Show, but also a number

Perhaps, mainly we think of insurance being

related to car or home, but never related to
sports activities like golf. Well, its time to
think again, because being on the golf course
can be a hazardous place, so wouldnt it be
better to know that you are covered for any
eventualities that may occur?
Basic Golf Insurance cover from Liberty
Seguros for amateurs starts at just 72

mind on the fairways of Spain and around the
world.
Depending on the Golf Insurance cover
taken out, you can be covered not only for
your golf clubs, but also for personal accident
and third parties too whilst on the golf course.

Must tell you about our appearance in the

Magic of the Musicals Show at the La
Cumbre, but that will have to wait until next
month.
In the meantime we will be completing our
rehearsing of The Pride of London, which
will be performed for the first time at El
Saladillo on Thursday, 25th February. Tickets,
which cost 10, including a Menu Del Da,
may be purchased at the Cultural Centre
on Camposol between 4pm and 5.30pm on
Wednesday afternoons, or you can email
us at masquerademusicals@gmail.com.
You can now also find us on Facebook under
Masquerade Musicals.
We have a few vacancies for ladies who have
a good singing voice and are able to make
simple movements in time to the music,
although the latter is not essential. If you
are interested, then now is the time to join,
since we will be shortly starting work on our
next show. We rehearse every Wednesday
afternoon 4-6pm at the Cultural Centre on
Camposol.

There have been many first time experiences

this year, but we have survived, had masses
of fun, hopefully entertained all who have
attended our shows and raised funds for
charity in the process.

Apples - manzanas
The Apple Tree is a deciduous tree in
the
rose
family
best
known
for
its
sweet,
pomaceous
fruit.
It
is
cultivated worldwide as a fruit tree. In the
wild, Apples grow readily from seeds.
However, like most perennial fruits,
Apples are ordinarily propagated asexually
by grafting. Apple Blossom is produced in
spring simultaneously with the budding of
the leaves and are produced on spurs and
some long shoots. The fruit matures in late
summer or autumn and varieties exist with
a wide range of sizes.

be found in many prepared foods (especially

desserts) and drinks. Modern Apples are
generally sweeter than older cultivars, as
popular tastes have varied over time. Many
beneficial health effects are thought to result
from eating Apples; however, two types of
allergies are attributed to various proteins
found in Apples.

Theres an important loss of nutrients when

Apples are processed into Apple Sauce
and an even greater loss when they are
processed into juice. It is possible to put
whole Apples into a powerful blender for
juice when very little if any of the nutrients
are lost. Researchers have compared intake
of whole Apples to intake of Apple Sauce
and Apple Juice, to discover that people
report less hunger after eating whole
Apples rather than eating Apple Sauce or
drinking Apple Juice. The polyphenols in
Apples are clearly capable of influencing our
digestion and absorption of carbohydrates
and the overall impact of these changes is to
improve regulation of our blood sugar.

Apple Trees and fruit are prone to a

number of fungal, bacterial and pest
problems, which can be controlled by a
number of organic and non-organic means.
About 80 million tons of Apples were grown
worldwide in 2013 and China produced
almost half of this total. There are more than
7,500 known cultivars of Apples, resulting
in a range of desired characteristics for
various tastes and uses, including cooking,
eating and cider production.
Apples have been grown for thousands
of years in Asia and Europe, and
have religious and mythological significance
in many cultures, including Norse, Greek and
European Christian traditions.
Apples are often eaten raw, but can also

Page 22

Winter Apples, picked in late autumn and

stored just above freezing, have been an
important food in Asia and Europe. Until
the 20th century, farmers stored Apples
in frost-proof cellars during the winter
for their own use or for sale. Improved
transportation of fresh Apples by train and
road replaced the necessity for storage,
but in the 21st century, long-term storage
again came into popularity, as controlled
atmosphere facilities were used to keep
apples fresh year-round using high humidity,
low oxygen and controlled carbon dioxide
levels to maintain fruit freshness.
The skin of the Apple is unusually rich in
nutrients and even if the recipe youve
chosen requires peeled Apples, consider
leaving the skins on to receive the unique
benefits found in the skins. To prevent
browning when slicing Apples, simply put
the slices in a bowl of cold water with a
spoonful of lemon juice. For use in future
recipes, sliced Apples freeze well in plastic
bags or containers.

The Apple was considered, in ancient

Greece, to be sacred to Aphrodite and to
catch a thrown Apple was to symbolically
show ones acceptance of love. Though
the forbidden fruit of Eden in the Book of
Genesis is not identified, popular Christian
tradition has held that it was an Apple that
Eve coaxed Adam to share with her and
the apple became a symbol for knowledge,
immortality, temptation and the fall of man
into sin and sin itself. The larynx has been
called Adams Apple because of a notion
that it was caused by the forbidden fruit
remaining in the throat of Adam.

Apples
An Apple a day keeps the doctor away, thats
what our Grandma use to say to us and I
guess the saying meant you had at least one
piece of fruit a day! Apples are used a lot
in cooking and not just for desserts. Sunday
roast pork would not be complete without
Apple Sauce and Apples add a lovely
touch to any salad. Toffee Apples are great
at any childrens party or BBQ for dessert,
but much easier to do Chocolate Apples as
all you need to do is melt the chocolate, put
a stick in a clean Apple and coat it! There
are so many recipes to choose from, but I
have selected some easy ones for you to
try. The crumble cake saves having to make
custard and is ideal to take out for a quick
snack. My favourite is the Apple, Sausage
and Leek Pie (or Sausage Surprise as I call
it) which I make regularly and is very quick
and easy to do for busy people, especially if
you buy the pastry!
Buen Apetito
Apple, Sausage and Leek Pie
8 pork sausages
3 leeks
1 apple
1 tbsp plain flour
1 tbsp grainy mustard
200ml stock
375g pack ready-rolled short crust pastry
1 egg

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Fry

the sausages in a large frying pan until
browned all over, remove and set aside.
Remove most of the fat left in the pan,
then add leeks and soften for 8-10 mins.
Add the peeled apple slices and cook for 1
min more. Stir in the flour, followed by the
mustard. Pour over the stock and bubble for
2 mins to make a sauce. Chop the sausages
into chunks and stir into the pan, then tip
everything into a large ovenproof dish. Top
with the pastry, trimming off any excess and
glaze with the egg. Bake for 25 mins until
golden.
Apple Crumble Loaf
140g butter

Page 24

250g self-raising flour

2 tsp. mixed spice
140g light brown sugar
100g raisin
3 large eggs, beaten
2 apples
5 tbsp. milk
For the topping
1 rounded tbsp. plain flour
25g butter
25g light brown sugar
1 rounded tbsp roughly chopped hazelnuts
Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3. Butter
and line the base of a 2-litre loaf tin with
baking parchment. Tip the flour and spice
into a food processor and add the butter.
Whizz to make fine crumbs, then mix in the
sugar. Tip into a mixing bowl and stir in the
raisins, eggs, apples and milk. Mix well until
everything is evenly combined, then spoon
into the prepared tin and smooth the top.
To make the topping, rub the flour, butter
and sugar through your fingers to make a
rough crumble and then stir in the nuts.
Sprinkle evenly over the cake mixture and
bake for 50-55 mins, until firm to the touch
and a fine skewer inserted into the centre
comes out clean. Cool in the tin for 15 mins,
then turn out and cool on a wire rack.
Apple, Cauliflower and Blue Cheese
Salad

Small bunch mint
50g sunflower seeds, toasted (walnuts or
cobnuts also work well)
Make the dressing by whisking the vinegar,
olive or rapeseed oil and honey with some
seasoning. Pour over the sliced apple then
gently mix in the cauliflower and cheese.
Scatter over the mint and the toasted seeds
before serving.

Pork and Apple Burgers with

the tops off the sausages and squeeze
the meat out into a bowl. Stir through the
grated apple and sage, then shape into 4
patties. Place the burgers on a baking sheet
and cook for 25-30 mins or until golden and
cooked through. Meanwhile, mix the vinegar
and sugar together with some seasoning.
Stir to dissolve the sugar before stirring in
the onion, cabbage and mustard. Leave to
stand and soften while the burgers finish
cooking. Place a burger in each roll and top
with some pickled cabbage, serving any
extra on the side.

large bowl mix the self-raising flour, baking
powder, cinnamon, whole meal flour and
golden caster sugar. In another bowl, mix
the eggs, semi-skimmed milk and sunflower
oil. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry

Room With a View

As
my
birthday falls
in the middle
of December,
it has become
a bit of a
tradition
to
spend a night
in
Murcia
City with my
boys, to see
the Christmas
lights
and
have a meal.
At 13 and almost 16, it sometimes seems that
these are the only occasions for which they
will turn off the Xbox and actually be seen in
public with their Mum!!
This year we stayed at the Hotel Floridablanca,
which is just across the river from the Town
Hall and ideally placed to visit the cathedral
and see the lights. For the first time, I booked
2 rooms, as last years experience of sharing a
bedroom with 2 teenage boys after a Mexican
meal had left me somewhat traumatised!

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

As we drove to the city I explained to the boys

that they had a standard twin room, whilst
Mum had an upgraded room with a terrace

A New Year A New Start.

Well, that time of year is here again and
we so often use the start of a New Year as
a time of reflection - looking back over the
previous year and looking forward to the
New Year ahead of us. This can so often get
our New Year off to a bad start, especially if
our previous year had not been good; the
disappointments and failures of the past can
overshadow the chances and opportunities
that lie ahead of us.
Maybe as you read this article today, you

to sit on. On arrival, the lady on check in

explained that we were 3 floors apart (I
considered that a bonus!) and room 309 was
a double and 610 a twin.
As we went
into
the
double
r o o m ,
C a m e r o n
started
to
laugh.
I
think
youve been
had
Mum,
thats
not
much of a
balcony!
Sure enough
there was a
tiny balcony,
so
narrow
that even a
chair
would
not fit on it.

even the tiny chair outside.

Never mind I said, not wanting to spoil the
night for the kids lets go up and see your
room.
Alex was the first to open the door to room
610 and the Wow! should have given it away
- a long corridor, a large bathroom with comfy
white robes and slippers, round the corner to
an ENORMOUS queen sized bed, minibar and
coffee machine and a large TERRACE with 2
loungers, plants and a patio set!
This time it was my turn to laugh - the girl on
reception had just got the numbers muddled
up and I did have my terrace and view after
all.
Never mind son. I said to Cameron At least
you have that lovely balcony to stand on!

Well it didnt look like that on the photo! I

said, trying to hide my disappointment at not
being able to relax on my terrace with a coffee
and despite our best efforts, we couldnt get

might be sensing some personal failure even

before the New Year has really begun - those
resolutions we make to eat better, exercise
more, give up bad habits and cut down on
this and that, be nicer to people, etc, etc. You
can add your own resolutions to this wish list!
Very few of us manage to change the direction
of our lives or the way that we live without
outside help and encouragement. I applaud
those of you with great will-power that
manage to change the pattern of your lives
- and stick to it. Perhaps you have employed
a personal trainer to fix you a healthy living
regime and who encourages you to keep at
it, keep walking, keep jogging, stay off those
unhealthy foods [you know the food that we
all love to eat].
Even when major changes in our lifestyle are
required for our healths sake, many of us still
struggle to get out of the old ways that we
have always lived you know those habits
of a lifetime. That is exactly the problem! I
stand and fall based on what I do - I have
to do all the hard work! This pattern is the
same in our spiritual life when we try to
make ourselves better people. There are
some things we can change ourselves, but
there are also things that are impossible to
change in our own strength and will-power.
We get in our own way and we trip ourselves
up over the mes and Is. I have often had to
pray Lord take the I out of mi. When its all
about us and so often it is because we want
all the glory of success, God has a hard time
getting through to our hearts.

No more would it be God up there somewhere,

like pie in the sky when we die, but now God
was here on earth. Jesus was as human as us
and as Godly as God He was with us - He
experienced all the stuff that we go through.
He felt the pain we feel and He bled like we
bleed. It was as if God provided us with a
personal spiritual trainer of our very own
Himself!
The good news as we start this New Year is
that God gives us the opportunity to make
a brand new start in this brand New Year
and it is not dependant on our working on
making ourselves better people. If God had
waited for me to get myself right and
good enough for Him, He would still be
waiting. Instead, God came to us. He sent
His Son Jesus to pay the price of our messups and just asks that we acknowledge this
and receive His love and forgiveness.
If God could change my life, He can
change yours too and give you a sure
and certain hope for your future - just
ask Him to.
Gods love for us is constant and unchanging;
thats why we can put our trust in Him.
We at Wellspring wish everyone a happy
and blessed 2016.

When the birth of Jesus was foretold in the

Bible, it was described like this - The virgin
will conceive and give birth to a son and
you will call him Immanuel.
The name Immanuel means God is with us.

Dr Cliff Arnall, a British psychologist, has

developed a formula to determine the worst
day of the year. One factor is the time elapsed
since Christmas, after the holiday glow has
given way to the reality of credit-card bills.
Gloomy winter weather, short days and the
failure to keep New Years resolutions are also
a part of his calculations.

January is one long post-Christmas hangover.

It has been decided that the third Monday in
January, is the most depressing day of the
year. It has become known as Blue Monday.
Christians are not immune to the effects
of weather and post-holiday let-down, but
we do have a resource that can change our
approach to any day.

January is a depressing time for many. The

weathers awful, you get less daylight than a
stunted dandelion and your body is struggling
to cope with the withdrawal of the depression
- alleviating calorific foods, such as chocolate,
of the hedonistic festive period.

Psalm 118 recounts a list of difficulties

including
personal
distress,
national
insecurity and spiritual discipline, yet it goes
on to declare: This is the day the Lord has
made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

The psalm is filled with a celebration of Gods

goodness and mercy
in the midst of trouble
and pain. Verse 14
comes as a shout of
triumph: The Lord

my
strength
and song, and He
has
become
my
salvation.

On 8th December the WARMers enjoyed an

interesting walk in the area of Collado de la
Madera, led (mainly) by Jessica!
We think that several records were broken
during the walk; for example, in a group
of 26 walkers, seven different nationalities
were represented (Spanish, English, American, Russian, Scottish, Dutch and Swiss).
Whether or not it is a record remains to be
seen, but the fact that the walk was scheduled for a bank holiday (the day of the Immaculate Conception, Tuesday 8th Decem-

ber) certainly enabled more people to participate than usual. What is most definitely
without doubt a record, was the fact that
this outing had three leaders (one of whom
was not able to walk!)
On the north side of the Sierra de Ricote and
starting from the forestry car park above La
Bermeja (altitude approximately 600 metres
above sea level) we climbed steadily uphill
for about an hour. As the low cloud dissipated it was decided to detour to the fire
lookout at La Linuesa (altitude 944 metres)

and take advantage

of
the beautiful
blue sky and
uninterrupted views an
unmissable
opportunity
to catch the
moment from
this highest
point on the
walk.
The
clock
was
ticking
(ie lunch was
beckoning)
and we resumed our route, this time with leader number two. After continuing briefly along the
forestry road towards the village of Ricote,
we detoured to the left, resuming quieter,
narrower, carefully constructed tracks downhill, through the tunnel of the Collado de la
Madera, and eventually arrived at Bar Carmen. From this point of the journey our nonwalking third leader took over and guided us
through the always excellent fare.
The GPS indicated that we had walked 12.6
km in four hours certainly not our fastest
outing but after the exercise in the fresh
mountain air above nothing could have bettered the conviviality of good food shared
with good friends by the warmth of a log fire.

Having a hearing deficiency and having to

use an aid makes you much more aware of
what you are saying about others. When I
first had to use an aid I found I would overhear folks conversations that I wasnt
privy to. It taught me a big lesson about
not gossiping!

Maybe God has been telling you He wants

you to give your life to Him, or has a
particular job for you to fulfil.
Youre
concerned that you might make wrong
decisions, or not live up to Gods standards.
We make excuses. We only need to be
obedient.

My friend is extremely deaf, to the extent

she has a personal loop system which she
demonstrated to me. Talk about amazing!
If she whispered even in another room, as
long as I had the receiver and my aid was
turned to the loop setting, I was still able
to hear her clearly.

He delights when we make the effort and is

just waiting for us to open the door to Him.

you were created in His image. You have

Well, another year has come and gone,

as have the olives from the thousands of
trees in the area. We have seen many of
the new motorized machines being used to
harvest the olives. This takes a lot of the
hard work out of the picking of the olives
and of course it is so much quicker. The
youngsters do not want to spend their
spare time in the fields collecting the olives,
so invariably it falls on the older residents
to do this mundane job. It appears to be a
good harvest this year and many farmers
have pulled out old almond trees and
replaced them with the more productive
olive trees.
Going to the dentist has long been a
necessity rather than a routine and finding
that special dentist is so important. We are
lucky in Northwest Murcia to have a few
good English-speaking dentists and Paola
at Fescodent in Cehegin is one of those.
Fescodent can be found on the side road
opposite Mercadona in the first building
on the left on the second floor. Do not be
confused with the business on the ground
floor facing the main road. A few people
have been there thinking it was Fescodent
and have been very disappointed. Give
Paola a call on 968 077 396 if you are
unsure where to go.

Castillo, the highest point in the old town

of Cehegin (Casco Antiguo), there is a craft
market known as El Mesoncico. There
you will find more than 60 craftsmen of the
area with stalls displaying such products as
cured meats, hams, pottery, cakes, wines,
cheeses, etc. Each of the monthly markets
has a different theme showing traditional
and local crafts. The next market will be on
Sunday 31st January.
Begastri
The Archaeological See of Begastri
is opened for visitors on Saturdays and
Sundays from 10am to 2pm. You will be
able to see a video presentation followed
by a guided tour to see the remains of the
Iberian culture before the IV century B.C.
Car Boot Sale
This will be on Sunday 17th January and
takes place in the square beside the old
railway station in the Va Verde, just two
minutes from Mercadona. There is plenty
of room for parking but the Town Hall will
no longer be able to provide the stalls.
The charge remains at 2 per site. Anyone

Fiesta de Las Cuadrillas, Barranda
January 23rd-25th
Every year on the last Sunday in January,
the town of Barranda, Caravaca de la Cruz
celebrates this festivity in which numerous
bands, known as cuadrillas, sing and
perform in the streets.
Around 15 groups from all over Spain take
part in this event. Throughout the morning
the groups take up their positions around
the squares and streets, where they sing
and dance in the midst of the crowds of
onlookers. After lunch come the choques
de cuadrillas, or battles of the bands, in
which pairs of bands simultaneously vie
to outdo each other whilst performing
together. At the end of the day, all the
bands gather in Baranda Social Club where
the festivities continue until the early hours
of the morning.

served to warm us up and almost without
realizing it, Aleppo pines gave way to other vegetation which is mixed in the woods
making a rich undergrowth.
The sun rose slowly and we saw autumn
leaves, now yellowed, from the oak trees
which have survived on the fertile slopes,
which are unique to our region. Flashes red
as flames appeared in the sky, giving so
much wonder to our beloved Moratalla.

As we speak of wonders, we reached

one of the fascinating moments of the
tour. Three ravines converge at this spot,
known as Los Barrancos. Huge oak trees
tower over 16 metres high, some of which
are probably more than 500 years old. We
walked among them, touching them with
respect and of course we took images on
our cameras to remember the magnificent
specimens. Despite the rain fall the day
before and the full breeding season of the
Salamanders, we found no trace of them.
We continued to climb in single file along
the narrow path through the forest, down
to what was the old road through the
mountains from neighbouring Caravaca.
Here we had the feeling that the sun rarely heats this particular part of the slope,
where we also found an abandoned bunker. The increasingly vertical climb took us
into the depths of the forest as the old path
practically disappeared in many places. In
fact, the higher we got, the more difficult it

We

to Las Toriles, which
is close to a
place to enclose cattle.
Natural erosion has carved the castle and
it was a real spectacle for everyone, especially for lovers of photography. It also offered us the necessary protection against
the wind that whips up to the summit.
Sheltered in the cliffs, we had lunch before
wandering around the grounds discovering their secrets, like an animal pen where
the owner took refuge when sleeping or
hunting. There was evidence of mountain
goats as there were droppings and the typical smell. In the cenajos where water had
been dripping, stalactites hung down.
The summit awaited us with the wind and
the sun, encouraging us to face the chimney which leads to
the summit ridge at
1427 metres of Pico
del Buitre.

We continued along the track that led us

back to the origin of our journey, the second part of the route; the culinary enjoyment! La Pastora has some delicacies such
as fried cheese with jam and exquisite
meats and cheeses. This was the end to a
beautiful and interesting day, crossing our
lands, getting to know them a little better.
We laughed, drank and ate in the warmth
of friendship, bound by mutual interests
and experiences.

Suddenly, a curious
winged vision appeared as Ravens
flew together. These
birds are slowly disappearing from our
skies due to a drug
used in local livestock. The strong
wind had cleared the
skies and the view
was superb enabling
us to identify various landmarks, including the home of
our friends Paul and
Paqui, Mojarra.

for lower levels to return to the river. The
unevenness of the track caused an occasional slip, but then we were on the road
that plunged us back into the shade of the
oak forest. The evidence of so little rain
meant that we saw no sign of the normally
common salamanders.

After a few pictures

To
our
minds,
one
of the most
fascinating
of
Murcias
landscapes is
known as the
Badlands,
or sometimes
the
lunar
landscape of
Gebas, not far
from Alhama
de Murcia. If
you take the
road to Pliego
and
Mula
from Alhama,
very quickly
after passing
the sign which tells you that you have left the
village of Gebas, you come to some casas
rurales and a restaurant on the right of the
road. The side-road you take off the Pliego
road, itself goes past this restaurant. After
turning right on to it, the side-road almost
immediately bends round and runs past the
other side of the restaurant, before ultimately
going down into Gebas itself.

What are these Badlands with their surreal

landscape?
They are, in fact, an area of over 2,000
hectares to the north of Alhama de Murcia,
the vast majority of which was declared a
protected zone in 1995 and consist of gullies
and ravines cut into a landscape that is largely
devoid of vegetation, hence the references to
the lunar landscape or Badlands. The
landscape is formed of marls and clays, in
which erosion caused by torrential rain has
carved the gullies and ravines in the deeply
incised landscape which you now see. Add
to all this the general scarcity of rain in the
area today and, therefore, the general lack
of vegetation, the ravines stand out in great
grey starkness with little greenery to soften
them.
To us, the best way to see this singular
landscape is to walk through it. When we
have done this walk, we parked at the side
of the road by the restaurant, but you can
also park further on to reduce the distance
walked.
If you park by the restaurant,
continue walking down the pleasant minor
road which, curiously, is flanked by traditional
style lamp posts on one side.
After a few hundred yards, you come to
a group of buildings. By the buildings is a
sign El Mojon which indicates that you are
coming to the protected landscape of the
Barrancos de Gebas. A further sign just
beyond gives directions to various locations.
We followed the direction indicated for the
Mirador de Gebas - the same way to the

Page 34

cemetery! You then follow a good, but nonasphalted track to the left. A few yards
further on, the path forks and you head
along the right hand, main branch which goes
between two pylons. A little further on, the
track again divides, with the cemetery to the
right and the Barrancos de Gebas signed to
the left and with the viewpoint (the Mirador)
some 1.8 kilometres distant.
At least you
now know just how much further you are
going to have to walk! There is also a second
sign almost immediately after the first which
tells you that the area is of geomorphological
(ie landscape) interest and has a protected
flora and fauna.

It is clearly possible to drive up the fork in the

track to the cemetery and it was obviously
envisaged that vehicles would go down also
to the Mirador, as there is yet another sign
which tells you not to exceed 30kms per
hour and to drive with care. When we first
walked to the Mirador, after the track divided
near the cemetery, we found the route to the
viewpoint extremely rough and rutted and, to
our minds, unsuited for an ordinary car. On
our last visit (April 2015) the track seemed
to have been improved somewhat. However,
there were still ruts in places and, unless
the track is maintained, any serious rain will
obviously cause further deterioration.
Continuing to
walk on this
track,
you
soon
begin
to
descend
and see the
spectacular
view of the
weird, heavily
g u l l i e d
landscape
in front of
you. Barren
r a v i n e s
a p p e a r
immediately
to the left
of the track,
while land to
the right is
terraced
in
places with almond trees. There is, indeed,
remarkably little vegetation, other than some
areas of scrub in the Badlands because
of the aridity, the nature of the soil and the
erosion which has taken place.
A little
more scrub may often be seen on the slightly
less arid but cooler northern slopes of the
ravines.
The area is not entirely desolate
and, especially if you walk this track in the
spring, do not be surprised at seeing wild
flowers and plants around you. Even so, the
overwhelming feature is the spectacularly
eroded gullies.

Later, the track you are on crosses a

depression over an almost complete concrete
infill no doubt in an attempt to overcome
the ravages of erosion.
Look over to the
left as you ascend to see the expanse of the
Badlands fully revealed. The viewpoint
is now straight ahead.
However, unless
you have other plans, avoid the track which
diverts to the right by a signpost saying
Prohibido Coger Tapena y Caracoles. Go
down the left hand track and just a little
further on you see slightly to the right and
in front of you beyond the viewpoint, a large
reservoir. The track towards its end at the
Mirador is slightly elevated on a small ridge
with a narrow strip of trees planted on the
land just below to the left.
Even to the more cultivated right of the
track, there are deep gullies, the tops of
which have often been levelled and planted
with almond trees. A pleasant few hundred
yards then brings you to the parking area
at the end of the track. Beyond the parking
area, there is access to the Mirador. It is an
excellently constructed viewpoint and has
trees planted in it and even a water point.
There are various explanatory notice boards
scattered around its periphery, though not
surprisingly, they are only in Spanish. One
concerns the relationship between man and
his surroundings which has created this
singular landscape. A second board simply
gives a pictorial view of the scene across
from the Sierra de Ricote, to the Sierra de
la Pila and the Sierra de Carrascoy. A third
board contains much information about
the typical bird and plant life to be found
in the Badlands - esparto and teasel
grass, natweed, rosemary, the little owl, the
jackdaw, the bee eater and the insect eating
Dartford Warbler are all described.

Spend some time looking around you at the

strange and varied landscape. Directly in
front of you to the east, you have a good view
of the Embalse (Reservoir) de la Rambla de
Algeciras, which was constructed in 1995.
You can descend from the Mirador to the
obvious track at its foot where there is a
signpost to guide you if you wish to continue
on. Otherwise, you simply turn round and
retrace your steps all the way back. We took
the walk very easily indeed with many stops
and completed it in well under three hours.

with a fundraising evening of music from the
wonderful Barrington - all proceeds from this
event will be going towards the Wheels for
Kiko fund so please look out for ticket sales
in January. Kiko is 15 years old & lives in
Murcia - an active young man, keen on sports
who one morning earlier this year woke to
find himself paralysed. You can only imagine
the immense effect this had on both his & his
familys lives. His Father had to stop work
to care for Kiko in hospital while his Mother
looked after the other children at home & the
parents swapped places at the weekends.
Recently, thanks to a special bed donated by
a fellow Lions Club, Kiko is now living back
home. The Leos learnt that Kikos family are
currently saving for a wheelchair, so members
resolved to do everything possible to raise the
2,000 required to purchase one.
In December an online auction of items made
for Christmas was held and the Leos would
like to send a huge leoroar to everybody who

Patient Plays Saxophone During Brain

Surgery
A Spanish hospital has removed a brain
tumour from a patient who was conscious
throughout the operation and playing his
saxophone.

surgeons
entertained with his music-making during
his 12 hours in theatre, although this was
not the aim of the exercise. By playing,
doctors could see which parts of his brain
were actively in use and could ensure they
did not harm healthy parts when removing
the lump.
The left-hand side of the brain is used for
interpreting music and playing an instrument
which Carlos does professionally in
two bands helps identify and signal the
eloquent areas of the brain tissue, such as
the senses, motor functions, language and
auditive cortex.
For parts of the operation, Carlos had to
be heavily sedated with a local anaesthetic
such as the part where they cut his skull
open and the actual tumour removal but
otherwise he only had a local anaesthetic for
the parts being worked on.
The operation was performed at Mlaga
General Hospital with the help of three
neurosurgeons, two neuropsychologists,
three neurophysiologists, an anaesthetist,
five nurses, an auxiliary nurse and a porter.
Two weeks later, Carlos was discharged and is
said to be recovering well with physiotherapy
and home care.

FARC Forced Abortion Nurse Arrested

A Colombian nurse working in Madrid has
been arrested after it transpired he forcibly
terminated over 150 pregnancies of female
fighters with the rebel army in his home
country.
Hctor Albeidis Arboleda Buitrago, 40, has
been wanted by Interpol for forced abortions
of FARC militants some of them mere
teenagers and some of whom died as a result
of the non-consented procedure because
their pregnancy and eventual motherhood
would have had negative consequences for
their ability to fight, in the guerrillas view.
Luis Gonzlez Len, Arboleda carried out the
abortions over a 15-year period, mostly in
remote rural areas in the west and centre
of the country. The women who reported
their ordeal describe it as absolute torture,
both physically and emotionally, which left
them with psychological scarring in many
cases and serious injuries in others, which
have led to gynaecological problems and
infertility among many of them and several

of the victims died as a direct result of the

unregulated practice.
If any of the women refused to abort and
insisted on carrying their child, they were
likely to face a death sentence unless
they were the wives or girlfriends of senior
commanders, since these were offered
greater privileges than those further down
the hierarchy.
Some women say they were forced to
undergo multiple abortions with no proper
medical precautions taken, and in the middle
of a rainforest one of whom revealed five
of her pregnancies had been terminated
against her wishes.
Cocaine Disguised As Wooden Pallets
Spanish police have seized dozens of pallets
made out of 1.4 tonnes of compressed
cocaine that was made to look like wood and
imported into Spain via Valencia. They also
uncovered cocaine disguised as charcoal as
part of the same shipment from Colombia.
The drugs were extracted from pallets and
charcoal, processed and distributed around
Europe.
The authorities have arrested 12 people in
Spain, Britain and Dubai, describing two of
the Colombians arrested in Spain as expert
chemists and drug manipulators, sent over
to Spain to reverse the process used to
disguise the cocaine and extract it again
ready to sell on the streets. Investigators
discovered an industrial warehouse in Chiva
(Valencia) which was being used to carry out
the necessary chemical process to extract
the refined drug ready for sale. Police
confiscating 24,000 kilos of coal divided
up into 600 sacks, of which three actually
contained 120 kilos of coal made of cocaine.
In addition, the 40 pallets used to transport
the sacks of coal where found to contain
1,400 kilos of cocaine too.
Spanish customs officials say in recent years
they have found cocaine in breast implants,
a wig and even a plaster cast encasing a
mans broken leg.
Record Year At Reina Sofa Museum
Just a year after Madrids world-famous
Reina Sofa art museum was facing possible
closure, the gallery has announced record
numbers of visitors and profits up by 30%.
From its future being in jeopardy at the end
of 2014, the Reina Sofa museum has sold
tickets to 3.1 million tourists so far in 2015
one of the highest figures ever. Visitor
numbers and ticket sales for 2015 exceeded
the massive influx seen in 2013 when the

Ortega display in the Crystal Palace wing.
The Reina Sofa will also work closely with
other global exhibitions, including one on the
Cuban painter Wilfredo Lam partly organised
by the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Tate
Gallery in London. A display of the works of
Txomn Badiola and a selection by Belgian
Marcel Broodthaers organised jointly with
the MOMA in New York are also on the cards.
The Reina Sofas star piece for 2016 will
be an exhibition of Spanish post-war art,
covering the period from 1939 to 1953 or
the wider 1940s with key paintings by
Dal, Tpies, Maruja Mallo, Max Aub, Joan
Brossa, Capa, Eduardo Chillida, Antoni Clav,
Julio Gonzlez, Josep Guinovart, Gutirrez
Solana, Enrique Jardiel Poncela, Millares, and
Palazuelo, among others. An as-yet unseen
collection of modern art, created solely in
the 21st century, will be staged at the end of
2016, in which nine in 10 of the works have
never yet been on display.
Montserrat Caball Sentenced For Tax
Evasion
Spanish Soprano Montserrat Caball has
been sentenced to six months in jail and a
fine of just over a quarter of a million euros
for tax fraud.
The opera singer best-known outside of
her native country for her duet, Barcelona,
with Freddie Mercury, which was the opening
song for the 1992 Olympics has reached
a plea-bargaining agreement with the
prosecution through her solicitor.
Given that her sentence is less than two years
and is for a first offence, under Spanish law
she will not have to serve it unless or until
she commits any other crime.
Wire
Thieves
Ground
Barcelona
Suburban Trains
Regional rail traffic disruptions affecting the
Barcelona area continued for several days
after thieves made off with 60 metres of
electric cables in order to sell the copper wire
inside as scrap metal.
Transport firm ADIF says the theft in Mollet
del Valls (Barcelona province) has affected
over 40 trains and 20,000 passengers.
The damage to the power lines was
considerable. Four lines on the Barcelona
outer suburban network, or Cercanas were
grounded after the 3,000-watt cable was
cut, leading to several other wires collapsing
and information systems ceasing to function.
A power surge resulting from the damage
caused three small fires in different places
throughout the train system, including
an ADIF control office where electronics,
computer and electrical networks suffered
harm.
Train signalling, control of carriages entering
and leaving stations, couplings, and other
crucial elements were no longer working.
Spain Amongst EUs Most Cosmopolitan
Countries
Spain has the 8th highest number of foreign
residents in the EU. Luxembourg has the
highest portion at over 45%, with Poland the
lowest at 0.3%.
Most Europeans who live in Spain are
Romanians (16%), followed by Brits (7%).

weeks
old,
lovely chunky
girlies.
We
think Dad is
a Bodaguiro
and Mum is
definitely
a

Breton Spaniel. All puppy vaccinations done.

Peaches
A great puppy
with lots of love
to give. She was
given up by her
previous
family
who were going
back and forth
to the UK so we
agreed to take
her and find her
a loving forever
home.
We
understand she
spent a lot of time
left in the garden,
but she is no
worse for it. She
is excellent on
and off the lead,
good in the car
and gets on with
all other dogs.
She is approx 14
weeks old.
Eddie
This little chap
was found at the
side of the road
in Totana by the
lovely couple that
have agreed to
foster him.
He

is approx 8/10 weeks old, quite shy, but Im

sure with a bit of time he will come round.
A great BIG thank you to everyone who made
the Artisan Fayre a great day, including
Anne Walmsley, Mal Wylde, Brenda Harvey,
Jean Collins, Anne Taylor (Rudolf) and John
(Santa). A whopping 1,375 was raised.

Happy Endings
Ada, Rolie, Ralfie, Harriet, Hettie, Hector &
Fudge all in UK.
Poppy, Gabi & Zak in Spain.

On 17th December the ladies of the Slimming

Club in Cats Bar donated toys and sweets to
be distributed for the 3 Kings celebrations on
January 6th. We would like to thank them for
their kind generosity and continued efforts in
helping us to Make A Difference.

We would like to take the opportunity this

month to thank everybody who made
donations of articles for us to sell, plus
monetary donations throughout 2015. This
has helped us achieve our objective as a
charity, to Make A Difference to the families
and people we help. With your help again
this year we will continue to do so. Without
your support we would not be able to provide
the aid we give to people in this area who so
desperately need it.
We were invited to attend, along with
other charities, a meeting at The British
Consulate in Alicante in recognition of
our efforts to help our local community.
During December we were able to give all of
the children presents for the festive season,
which were distributed on the Outreach
Days in December. These were so gratefully
received by the families who were quite

overwhelmed by the generosity of strangers

wanting to help them. Thank you to all those
kind people who donated articles for this
appeal. Warm blankets and clothing were
also distributed ready for the colder months
ahead, as well as the lovely toiletries bags
from the Welcome
Group.
A special thank you
must go to Karen and
her team from Just
Fabulous, and to all the
businesses that house
our
food
collection
bins and make regular
donations. We extend
our heartfelt gratitude
for their assistance
in helping us make
peoples lives a little
more bearable.

Page 42

Our Christmas Dinner Dance was a huge

success. Not only did we raise over 600, but
we also had a marvellous fun-filled evening.
Thanks to all who attended and to the hardworking and professional staff at The Club
House for helping to make it such a great
night.
Finally, last but not least, massive thanks and
respect must also go to all the volunteers
who work as part of our team, being shop
volunteers, outreach volunteers, drivers or
behind the scenes. We have done an amazing
job so far and this year we intend to do it
all again and more, with ever more people
needing our assistance. Well done to all
involved. Happy New Year everyone!

Hi All
We are still recovering from our fantastic
Christmas Party at the Costa Hotel on 11th
December. Everyone had a brilliant time with
the sumptuous food and the drinks flowing,
most of the night. Terry Jay did a fantastic job
of entertaining us with his music. He really
got everyone up dancing all night long.

was our first stop on the trip and was enjoyed

by all before continuing on to Calasparra for
our lunch. The lunch was a really big success
at the Virgin de la Esperanza. We really must
do this again sometime!

Tickets are still on sale for our Bullas Trip

to the Zacatin Artisan Market Sunday 7th
February including a visit to the local wine
museum and a taste of the local wine. There
will be a chance to sample some of the local
tapas following the Tapas Route in the town.
We will have our usual Table Top Sale and
Easter Egg Hunt for the Children on Easter
Monday. More to follow on this event.
4 day 3 Night Mini Break to Granada
staying in a 4 star Hotel with breakfast. The
date for this is Tuesday 26th April returning on
Friday 29th. We have included a day trip to
Malaga. Tickets are 155 for members and
165 non-members. Booking requires a 50
deposit per person to secure you a place. This
promises to be another very successful trip.
On behalf of the Social Club Committee
we would like to wish you all a Happy

help with keeping the weeds at bay, contact
Tony on 649 285 257.
Extra hands make light work!
The work is still on-going and without the

need volunteers to keep our little piece of
Spain a good place to be.

Wow, where did 2015 go?

The years
seem to fly by or, is it just because we are
getting older? Happy New Year to all
our friends and colleagues.
Everyone enjoyed a great trip to Gibraltar
visiting Morrisons for some Christmas
fare and the shopping mall at Malaga. No
monkey attacks were reported! It may be
a trip we would think about again later this
year if people are interested?

who is in the UK for the Winter and Mark

part of their job share. He is also responsible
for the lovely photos of past projects during
2015 on our website, (definitely worth a look
at some of the transformations!) During 2016
we will be replacing trees and shrubs which
have not survived during the Summer and
Autumn, despite watering. If you would like a
task completed in your area please contact us
and please give any plants near your home or

winds we have been experiencing can quickly
dry them out - thank you.
Thanks also to all our volunteers for turning

thanks to all those who have supported

Well hello ladies. Welcome to 2016! We hope

its going to be a great year for Ladies
Chatterbox. We have some very exciting
things in store for you all.
Firstly and I know it seems a distant memory,
but thanks to all who attended our end of year
Christmas Party. We held it in Camposol
Cultural Centre. Country Kitchen provided
a superb buffet and we had music from
Benny the Piano Man who came from the
Orihuela Coast. He was great and we would
recommend him. I think I can speak for all us
and say we had a great afternoon.

Our first meeting will be on 14th January. It

will be a talk by a local author on how to
self publish, so all you budding Brontes and
Archers, get that novel finished and come and
find out how to get it into the public domain.

fiesta or Valencia Las Fallas? We have earmarked Liquor 43 for April/May. With these
newer trips we thought it would be nice to
include partners. Again your feedback would
be appreciated.

Tuesday 26th January sees us off to Alhama de

Murcia market then on to Choc o latte for
afternoon tea. Places are limited and the price
is 16 for members and 19 non-members.

We meet every second Thursday 2-4pm, Book

Club meets every first Thursday 2-4pm and
Sew & Sew meet every Monday 2-4.30pm,
all at Camposol Cultural Centre.

We would your like feedback on proposed trips

such as bi-monthly Menu del Dia at different
locations. If you know of any good ones that
you have tried please tell us. Maybe Lorca

Catching Up With FAST

Dates For Your Diary:

The FAST AGM at Camposol Cultural Centre
- Friday 12th February.

We wish everyone a very HAPPY AND

HEALTHY NEW YEAR.

Trip to Aguilas Saturday 13th February

FAST had a very busy 2015. More emergency
calls were carried out than in previous years.
Sincere thanks are conveyed to the
Members, the public and the businesses for
all contributions. We could not provide this
voluntary service without your continued help
and support.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

It was necessary to suspend FAST in late

November due to Insurance problems, but
we anticipate this being resolved soon. We
are looking forward to 2016 with many new
plans and fresh ideas already put into place.
The support shown from the local businesses,
residents and visitors on Camposol is greater
than ever.
The Coach Trip to Benidorm was a great
success and the total amount raised was
525.
The Quiz plus the comedy duo; namely
Mandy and Silvana were a great success!
The FYI went well, raising over 4000.
The sponsored FAST Nurses Wax-Off in

December was a good laugh - though more

for the spectators than the FAST Nurses!
Four FAST nurses were sorted out by
Julie and Yoli from The Beauty Palace, on
Camposol B, who freely gave their time, also
kindly providing their equipment. Carol and
staff at the Black Bull, with Lisa B on the mic
were extremely good at persuading staff and
customers to be waxed, with armpits, chests,
stomachs, backs and legs being waxed to
raise money. Thank you and well done to all,
especially you brave people for helping FAST.
The final amount could be circa 500 with

Happy New Year to everyone!

Age Concerns Christmas festivities started
with the annual Christmas Party. There was
a feast of sandwiches, sausage rolls, cakes,
mince pies, chocolates etc etc. Christine
(dressed in her Santa outfit) sung to get us
all in the Christmas spirit and Rita led the
dancing, including the compulsory conga and
we finished off with Auld Lang Syne. A good
day was had by all.

Dear Editor
We would like to say a big Thank you, to all
the members of the Harlequins Rock Choir,
for their wonderful concert performance,
at Marianos restaurant, on the evening of
Thursday 26th November, to raise money and
collect items of clothing, bedding, household
goods and food, for poor and needy families
in the Mazarrn area.
Additional thanks should also go to the Alpha
Leos, who helped to relieve those attending
the concert, of all the goods they had brought
in lieu of an admission charge.
The raffle and donations, on the night,
exceeded 700, plus other donations,
bringing the total to over 1000, making the
evening a tremendous success.

Thank you to everyone who attended the

evening and who contributed so magnificently.
Thank you, also, to the people who were
preparing for the FAST Fayre the next day,
who helped to move the mountain of donated
goods, to the patio, to make it easier to load
up.
Members of the Choir said that they would
like to do the same next year and that would
be fabulous!!
Thank you all, again

Fr. Carlos Prats, the parish priest for the four

parishes involved, attended the evening and

explained the purpose of the event. He was

overwhelmed by the contributions made and
is already making good use of the proceeds
among all the needy in the area, whether
Spanish or not.

Another New Year is beginning!

Are you expecting this year to bring you
everything that you are hoping for?
Have you made any New Years resolutions?
Do you keep to these and fulfil them?
I dont make New Year resolutions, but
I do pray that this year 2016 will hold a
breakthrough in peoples lives.
What do I mean by that statement?
I pray that many will come to know and to
hand over their lives to Jesus Christ; to guide
them, heal them and for them to receive
eternal life in heaven when they leave this
earth. Also that many will search out a church

Are You Repaying A Mortgage? The EU

Requested On Its Last Report That All Money
Paid In Excess Must Be Refunded From The
Day Your Mortgage Was Signed If A Floor
Clause Was Included.
THE FIGURES:
Banks have started to include a floor
clause in mortgages to a percentage
ranging between 3.5% and 7% since
2009.
80% of the mortgages have a floor clause
included.
There are around 4 million mortgages in
Spain with a floor clause.
The cost of the floor clause can be more
than 3,000 on average per year per
family. (Source: ADICAE. Bank users
association)
What is the floor clause in a mortgage?
A floor clause sets up a minimum interest rate
to repay on your mortgage and does not allow
the borrower from benefiting from a reduction
of the mortgage rate which is dictated by the
variable interest rate benchmark (Euribor
in Spain). As a consequence a floor clause
increases the total cost of your mortgage.
What is the cost of the floor clause in a
mortgage?
The difference between the interests you

A church I believe should be a place that firstly

FACTS
On 9th May 2013 the Spanish Supreme

floor clauses null and void in mortgage
agreements, as the clause was agreed
with a lack of transparency.
The Spanish Supreme Court dictated two
new more rulings also in May reassuring

stating that banks have now to refund

Conclusions
Clients must request these mortgage floor
clauses to be removed from their deeds and
claim back the money paid in excess as a
consequence of the abusive clause.
Getting your money back is possible, and 90%
of courts are ruling in favour of consumers
when claiming the floor clause to be removed
and interest returned retrospectively from 9th
May 2013.
However, we cannot advise at present to
claim with retroactive effect from the date
your mortgage was signed, despite some
Law Firms advising their clients to claim
(in) all (the) past overcharged interest
rates (overcharged to) be reimbursed in
accordance with the (by the sound of the)
latest recommendations received from the
EU Supreme Court of Justice. The scenario
can change in the future and it may be the
Spanish Supreme Court of Justice will agree
with the EU Court of Justice, but at present it
is only clear that the amount to be reimbursed
can only run from 9th May 2013 as per the
ruling issued by the Supreme Court.
We will be more than pleased to help you in
order to claim the nullity of your floor clause
as well as to claim the refund of the interests
overpaid paid on your mortgage contract.
Please feel free to send us a copy of your
mortgage deed and we will find out for you
if you are affected by a floor clause, without
any obligation.
We find it worth pursuing as you will enjoy
paying a much lower interest rate in your
mortgage and save you hundreds of euros
every year. Euribor is now about 0.15%
and expected to be at a low rate for at least
another two years.

in business and the impossible question

how long do they intend to stay in
business? Are they here to make a quick
euro and run? The question I always ask
is Who will maintain the system when it
goes wrong? and believe me it will! If noone is getting paid on an ongoing basis,
who will fix it when it goes down? All these
Internet-based systems are in terms
of BBC/ITV/SKY, very small businesses.
TV signals do not just appear with no
maintenance requirements. Our system
is not perfect - as are none - but it does
have 24/7 maintenance engineers and it
will be fixed if it goes wrong as soon as is
possible. Some systems are off for a few
days and often a weekend when no one
wants to work! You pay your money and
take your choice, but beware - many
have been stung! As anywhere you spend
your hard earned money, check out the
supplier before you spend! There are many
Master Builders in Spain who have just
built a garden wall in the UK!
You have been warned and we
probably cannot fix a system not
supplied by us!
Rainbow hope you had a great Christmas
and wish you all the best for 2016. We
always welcome any questions you have
about TV in Spain (remember to ask about
TV availability in a property before you
finally buy).

Having retired to the Torrevieja area,

Wendy was one of the original Listeners,
travelling up to Bennissa to do a duty, in
2007 and became a Leader in 2009. Two
years later she became Branch Director of
Villa Martin, took over as Operations Sub
Group Leader and then Talks Co-Ordinator
in 2012. She joined the Board of Trustees
in 2012 as Secretary, playing a big part in
helping to set up the centre at Punta
Prima and was also a Trainer from 2013.
She was considered a lovely friend by fellow
volunteers, had a tremendous personality
and she will be greatly missed by everyone.
Wendy leaves behind her husband Martin
and family in UK to whom Samaritans in
Spain convey their deepest condolences.

Are you curious about work of Samaritans
in Spain? Would you be interested in
becoming a duty listener on the 900 525

Do you have a few hours a week to

In 2016 Samaritans in Spain will be
expanding their network and are currently
advertising for new volunteers to come
forward not only for their headquarters at
Punta Prima, but also for new listener teams
planned in Gran Alacant - Alicante, Javea
and Mazarrn areas. Samaritans in
Spain welcome applications from fluent
English speaking adult volunteers of
any nationality. Due to the confidential
nature of their work, offering impartial
emotional support, listener volunteers
are asked to provide references for
some background checks and undergo
a period of training and mentoring. It is
a thoroughly rewarding yet demanding
role and hence there is constant support
and focus on team welfare and back-up.

Some listeners at Punta Prima also

volunteer for the Charity shop and are on
call during shop hours and for face-to-face
consultations at the newly opened drop-in

to be engaged solely for the retail side of
things, but have awareness training and
are fully briefed to handle people in distress
and direct them to the duty listening
team - many callers make a first tentative
approach for help by browsing in the shop
and getting to know the staff and stop for
a friendly chat. Extra hands are always
welcome even if only one day a week. The
duty rosters are drawn up as far as possible
to suit everyones needs. All volunteers
are unpaid (expenses may be claimed).
Samaritans would also love to hear from
volunteers who might like to assist at
headquarters in other ways; eg with general
office admin, delivering publicity material,
running errands and so on. It might suit
a recently retired person with their own

having the opportunity to get out and about

Nunca, nada, nadie

It is time for another small digression away
from verbs, just to let you know that there
are other things to learn! We are going to
learn three negative words; that is, the words
that mean never, no-one and nothing.
These are as follows:
Never is nunca
No-one is nadie
Nothing is nada
Well that was easily done! However, as usual
we need to look at them in a bit more detail
because they are not used in exactly the
same way in Spanish as they are in English.
The first thing to realize is that in Spanish we
can use a double negative. For example, in
English it is incorrect to say something like I
dont say nothing, or I dont see no-one.
We got told off for these kinds of things as
children and told that if you say I didnt say
nothing, that means you said something,
because two negatives make a positive.
Well, in Spanish this isnt the case.
We say No digo nada I dont say

With
electricity
bills
being
distributed
across Southern Spain,
thousands of expatriates will receive an
unwelcome reminder of the high cost
of electricity in the country. A private
swimming pool is considered by many to be a
necessary luxury in the hot Spanish summers,
but the cost of running a pool in Spain can be
astronomical.
The cost of electricity here in Spain is
amongst the highest in Europe. Only
Denmark, Germany, Italy and Ireland pay
more for their electricity. Budget-conscious
consumers across Spain are increasingly
looking for ways to save money and reduce

anything and No veo a nadie I dont

see anybody.
This means that the words
anything, anybody and in fact the word any
itself in most cases have no real translation
into Spanish.
There are a few very common phrases that
use this double negative. One is No pasa
nada which we say as a response to an
apology when we want to reassure someone
that there isnt a problem. When someone
is struggling to understand something which
doesnt make sense, you may hear them
exclaim No entiendo nada I dont
understand anything!
The word nunca works in exactly the same
way.
No voy nunca al cine. I never go to the
cinema.
No juego nunca al golf. - I never play
golf.

juego al golf.
No pasa nada is more of a set phrase
that doesnt change in any way, although we
could say Nada pasa en este pueblo.
Nothing happens in this village.
When we put the negative word at the
beginning of a sentence we do so for the sake
of emphasis.
No voy al cine nunca. is simply a
statement of fact, whereas Nunca voy al
cine. sounds more like a strong complaint
or strong statement against visiting cinemas!
There is another way of emphasizing the
idea of never which would translate for us
as never ever or never more and that is
nunca jams.
Peter Pan, who you will
remember lived (or lives, I beg your pardon)
in Never Never Land, in Spanish lives in El
Pas de Nunca Jams.

However, (the second big however in this

article!), if we change the word order round of
our sentences and put the nunca, nadie or
nada first, we end up with only one negative
word again.
For example Nunca voy al cine., Nunca

HAH
Christmas
Dinner
Dance
A
Resounding Success
Saturday November 28th at 7.30pm was the
time for the start of the 2nd HAH Dinner
Dance which was held at the fabulous 525
hotel in Los Alcazares and what a night! As
always this event was SOLD OUT very early
and although another table was added on,
we still had a waiting list, so sorry to those
that were disappointed! An excellent 3 course
dinner with glass of wine was served very
efficiently and quickly by the 525 team and
then it was time to dance!

The Campoverde Reef Band (a great band

who do so much for charity) soon had many
up dancing and what a lovely picture. The
ladies looked stunning in their beautiful
dresses and the men very smart in lounge or
dinner suits, along with ceremonial dress and
a couple of kilts. Such a variety of music and
although there were a few smoochies the
floor was absolutely packed when the jives
etc. were played.

HAH volunteers and there were some great

prizes, many of which were donated by local
businesses. Thank you all for your support. A
fabulous portrait photo of John Lennon, taken
by the well-known celebrity photographer,
Bill Zygmant was auctioned and raised a
staggering 310; the raffle raising a further
1,280.
Lesley Eburne, HAH founder/organiser,
said We have such a great following for
our events, great venues, music and value,
and we at HAH are all so proud of what
we achieve. Thanking the Reef Band,
Manuela Lopez (525), the hotel staff and the
fantastic hard-working HAH volunteers, she
acknowledged that the success was also due
to the continued support of local businesses
and supporters.
November Sun For HAH At The Oasis
Bulevar
We expected rain but the sun shone for the
HAH Craft Fayre at the Oasis Bulevar, on
Sunday November 22nd. As always there was
a great turnout and lots of stalls to choose
from. HAH had plenty on offer, including
homemade cakes, cards, nearly new clothes,
crafts, gifts, raffle and tombola and we raised
a fantastic 989 on the day.

Thanking everyone for coming along in

support, Lesley Eburne, HAH founder and
organiser said I cant thank all the stall
holders and businesses on the Oasis enough
for their support, especially Pilar & Jose from
Luisines, but most of all, the hardworking
HAH Volunteers from the youngest Molly, to
the rest of us well into our 60s and 70s.
These Volunteers work tirelessly to raise the
funds so our Care Team and Professional
Nurses, Physios, Counsellors, Chiropodist
etc can continue to help so many people in
the Mar Menor/Los Alcazares area following
illness, hospitalisation etc. Last year alone,
2,400 hours were worked by our Fund Raising
and Care Teams, which is no mean feat with
only 35 active Volunteers. Well done and
thank you to all of you!
Come on now, make a New Years
Resolution to help one of the local
charities, who are all struggling. As little as
an hour a week will make such a difference
to the charity and it is very rewarding work.

assisting
vulnerable British
nationals and she
previously worked in the Department of
Health team, also based in Alicante. Her roles
have given her an insight into many of the
challenges and benefits experienced by those
visiting or living in Spain.
Sara said I am really excited about the
opportunity to take a lead in the support
we offer British nationals in this area of
Spain. My experience means I have a good
understanding of the needs of residents and
tourists and Im looking forward to working
with the local Spanish authorities and the
voluntary sector to ensure Brits can access
the support and information they need.
Sara has lived in Alicante for nine years with
her family, having moved to Spain shortly
after completing a degree in Spanish and
German at the University of Manchester.

Sarah-Jane, Consul for Alicante and Madrid

said Im very pleased that Sara is taking over
as Vice Consul in Alicante. Her experience
puts her in a great position to make sure we
continue to offer a high quality service to all
our customers.
Alicante is one of the busiest British
Consulates in the world and handled almost
450 deaths, detentions and hospitalisations in
2014/15. The team also dealt with more than
1200 cases of lost and stolen passports. The
consular region covers Alicante, Valencia,
Castelln, Murcia and Albacete and has
120,000 Britons registered on the padrn and
receives more than two million British tourists
each year.

Ana Botn, Executive Chairman of Banco
Santander, has been appointed an honorary

(DBE), for services to the British financial

services sector.
The appointment reflects Ms. Botns
services to the UK during her time as CEO
of Santander UK from December 2010 until
September 2014, when she was appointed
Executive Chairman of the Santander Group,
the largest bank in the Eurozone by market
capitalisation, which is based in Spain and
has a meaningful market share in 10 core
countries in Europe and the Americas.
As CEO she led the transformation of
Santander UK following the merger of Abbey
National, Alliance & Leicester and Bradford
& Bingley building societies and oversaw the
steady growth of the business to its current
position where it has around 860 branches
across the UK, serves 14 million customers
and employs 20,000 people.
The British Ambassador to Spain, Simon
Manley, said I am delighted that Ana Botn
has received this honour, reflecting her
exceptional contributions to the UK economy
and society. The United Kingdom welcomes
foreign investors - large and small - that wish
to expand overseas, for the opportunities that
it offers to those companies and the benefits
that it brings to our country. In particular,
Ms. Botn positioned Santander as a major
provider of lending for small and mediumsized UK businesses, complementing the UK
governments wider efforts to boost overseas
trade under the newly launched Exporting is

British Ambassador Presents Queens
Certificate And Badge Of Honour To
Spanish Citizen
Jose Antonio Cordeiro Otero has received
the Falkland Islands Queens Certificate and
Badge of Honour in recognition of his services
to the Falkland Islands and particularly for
his work in the fishing industry. The award
was presented by the British Ambassador
Simon Manley during a ceremony at the
Ambassadors Residence in Madrid.
Antonio arrived in the Falkland Islands in
1988 and lived there until he returned to his
native Galicia earlier in 2015. He worked for
the Falklands fishery from its creation and
also supported the establishment of The
Mission to Seafarers in the Islands capital
Stanley, which provides support and welfare
during times of crisis or need to the men and
women who work on the high seas. His most
important achievement was in developing and
fostering relationships between the Spanish
and the Falkland Islands fishing industries.

Santander UKs business support programme

Breakthrough provides a 200m capital fund
for high growth businesses with a turnover of
between 500k and 25m.
The award also recognises Ana Botns
voluntary contribution. In 2010 she joined
the Board of Trustees of the Mayors Fund for
London, a foundation that focuses on projects
to improve employment opportunities for
disadvantaged children and in 2013 she was
appointed as one of five external members to
the Financial Services, Trade and Investment
Board, which was established by the
Chancellor George Osborne to promote the
UKs financial services industry. In January
2014 she was appointed as a UK Business
Ambassador by the Prime Minister David
Cameron and in July 2015, she was appointed
to the Prime Ministers Business Advisory
Council.
Ms. Botn has also been a strong supporter
of
the
link
between
education
and
entrepreneurialism. Thousands of students
and entrepreneurs across the UK have
benefited from the scholarships, travel
grants, projects and awards since the bank
signed the first of its 80 collaborations with UK

Simon Manley said Previously the relationship

between the two fishing industries consisted of
little more than simple license arrangements.
Today, joint ventures between the two
fisheries are not only commonplace, but
essential to the Islands economy. It is safe to
say this would not be the case had it not been
for Antonios tireless work in this area. As a
result he enjoys widespread respect amongst
his peers not an easy thing to achieve in
such a tough and demanding industry.
Jose Antonio Cordeiro Otero said I have had
the privilege of serving two countries I feel I
belong to.
The ceremony was attended by Antonios
family and friends as well as by the British
Embassys Defence Attach Paul Lemkes.

Burns Supper is an institution of Scottish

life and the evening is spent celebrating
the life and works of the national Bard, Robbie
Burns. Suppers can range from an informal
gathering of friends to a huge, formal dinner full
of pomp and circumstance.
There are various running orders that cover all
the key elements of a Burns Night Supper.
Here are some suggestions:
Piping In The Guests
A Burns Night celebration normally calls for
a piper to welcome guests. For more formal
events, the audience would stand to welcome
special guests: the piper plays until the high
table is ready to be seated, at which point a
round of applause is due.
Chairmans Welcome
The Chair (host/organiser) warmly welcomes
and introduces the assembled guests and the
evenings entertainment.
The Selkirk Grace
This is a short but important prayer read to
usher in the meal. It is also known as Burnss
Grace at Kirkcudbright.
Some hae meat and canna eat,
And some wad eat that want it,
But we hae meat and we can eat,
And sae the Lord be thankit.

Toast To The Haggis

Prompted by the speaker, the audience joins in
the toast to the haggis. Its then time to serve
the main course with the traditional neeps and
tatties
The Meal
The meal is usually served with some suitable
background Scottish music.
Starter
Traditional cock-a-leekie soup
Main Course
Haggis, neeps & tatties (Haggis wi bashit neeps
an champit tatties)
Dessert
Clootie Dumpling (a pudding prepared in a linen
cloth or cloot) or Typsy Laird (a Scottish sherry
trifle)
Cheeseboard with bannocks (oatcakes)
Tea/coffee.
Liberal lashings of wine or ale should be served
with dinner and its often customary to douse
the haggis with a splash of whisky sauce, which,
with true Scots understatement, is neat whisky.
After the meal, its time for connoisseurs to
compare notes on the wonderful selection of
malts served by the generous chair.

Entertainment
Singers or Musicians will perform Burns songs
such as:My Luve is Like a Red Red Rose
Rantin, Rovin Robin
John Anderson, my jo
Ae Fond Kiss and Then We Sever
There may be moving recitals of a Burns poem
such as:
Tam o Shanter
Holy Willies Prayer
To a Louse
Address to the Unco Guid
For a that and a that.
The immortal memory
The Life Of Robert Burns
His literary genius, his politics, his highs and
lows, his human frailty and - most importantly
- his nationalism will be explored with sparkling
wit, painting a colourful picture of Scotlands
beloved Bard.
The speaker may conclude with a heart-felt toast
- To the Immortal Memory of Robert Burns!
Toast to the Lassies
The humorous highlight of any Burns Night
comes in this toast, which is designed to praise
the role of women in the world today. This should
be done by selective quotation from Burns
works and should build towards a positive note.
The toast concludes with To the Lassies!
Burns Readings
This may start with a reply to the Toast to the
Lassies, followed with a note of thanks from the
chair.
Auld Lang Syne closes the proceedings.

Piping In The Haggis

Guests normally stand to welcome the dinners
star attraction, which should be delivered on
a silver platter by a procession comprising the
chef, the piper and the person who will address
the Haggis. A whisky-bearer arrives to ensure
the toasts are well lubricated! During the
procession, guests clap in time to the music until
the Haggis reaches its destination at the table.

Address To The Haggis

The honoured reader seizes their moment
of glory by offering a fluent and entertaining
rendition of To a Haggis. The reader should
have his knife poised ready to cut the casing
along its length, making sure to spill out some
of the contents. The distribution of these bits
of haggis is regarded as a part of the fun. The
recital ends with the reader raising the haggis in
triumph during the final line Gie her a haggis!

Right on the border with Bulgaria and

Greece, the northern Turkish city of
Edirne was my base for the week. Like a
mini Istanbul, much smaller and minus
the tourists, it was real Turkey. The small
centre with pedestrian streets, bazaars and
grand Mosques is beautiful; full of culture
and old world charm, but walk only twenty
minutes away to the outskirts of town and
its altogether different.

once charged me for food. We talked every

day and I joined the guys at the Mosque
on at least three occasions. Watching them
pray, I sat quietly on the thick carpet at the
back and enjoyed the serenity.

Its beautiful yes? my friend said.

Oh yes, I replied.
You want to go up inside? His eyes
sparkled.
You serious?
Yes, wait. I get the Imam. He is friend of
mine.
Ten minutes later, he returned with the
Imam who greeted me with a nod of the
head and a smile.
Is this allowed? I gestured towards the
minaret.

Not only poor Turks, but many Syrian

refugees live in what can only be described
as squalor. I wandered the narrow streets of
shanty style accommodation, down-trodden
women sitting outside and often kids playing
in and around garbage. Lots of dogs, cats
and yes, rats - big ones at that; a far cry
from the charming centre of this town.

One of the guys who worked in the hotel,

did, in a very friendly manner, try his best
to get me to take Islam into my heart. We
chatted about this many times during the
week I was there. He was such a nice guy;
so full of passion. Not a fundamentalist in
any way whatsoever, he just oozed genuine
love for Allah. He smiled warmly as he saw
me sitting in the comfy area of the hotel
landing each night with a beer or two I had
taken in. Of course Id asked the owner in
advance if this was ok and was told that it
was not a problem. I didnt tell him about
my love of black pudding though, for that
would probably have been pushing it just a
little too far!

Kids with big dirty smiling faces ran up

to me as I walked through. They wanted
their photos taken. I looked around for
an adult..managed to make eye contact
with a group of old women who seemed to
understand the situation. They nodded their
approval. I took photos and showed them
to the kids through the view finder, much
to their delight. Nobody begged; nobody
asked me for anything.
These Syrian refugees are a growing
problem, not just for Turkey, but also for the
whole of Europe and its nearby borders. The
Turkish people have up until now, been very
sympathetic to the plight of their Syrian
brothers. That said, there is only so much a
people can or will take. I wonder, how many
more Syrian refugees arriving will it take
before the so far welcoming hand of the
Turkish population is removed? Much more
about this in the coming weeks
The owner and staff in my little hotel in
central Edirne were so kind to me. Naturally
Muslim, they were very interested to learn
of my travels to such places as Palestine.
They invited me to join them for meals out
the back in the little courtyard and never

On my last day, knowing he was not going

to succeed in converting me, he hugged me,
kissed me on the cheek and lastly put his
hand on my chest. He looked me in the eye
and told that even though I didnt believe, I
had a good heart.
One day in Edirne, just after prayer, the
hotel owner, the passionate young guy,
another from the hotel and myself, stood
outside the Mosque, its huge minaret
towering above us.

Normally not allowed, but I have key!

replied the smiling Imam.
In through a
small door at
street level,
I was soon
climbing up
inside
the
minaret,
up a set of
spiral stone
stairs which
were
built
hundreds
of
years
ago. It was
extremely
narrow; only
room for one
person at a
time. Up and
up and up we
climbed.
It
seemed
to
go on for ever, but eventually we came to a
tiny door, opened it and stepped out onto a
minuscule little round balcony. We were up
almost 150 feet. Oh my giddy aunt, it was
high! (See the picture of loudspeakers near
the top of the minaret; one that blasts out
the call to prayer.) My Turkish friends told
me that almost no-one gets up here and it
was a first for even them.
Id guess that I may have been
first western non-believer to have
the honour of climbing up inside
hundreds of years old minaret. It
exhilarating. Thank you guys.

Happy New Year to you all!

Dragontours wishes all their clients, old and
new, known and not-yet known, a wonderful
2016, full of adventure, love and health. In
this first article of the year, we would like
to talk about possibilities for that perfect
vacation, and hope that you will come in to
book your travel needs with us.
Mallorca
This beautiful island is just a 50 minute flight
from Alicante and there are daily flights, so
you can make your visit as long or short
as you wish. With relation to the Spanishsubsidized pensioners holidays, we can offer
very competitive prices for the same type
of holiday, but choosing your hotel and the
area you prefer whether it be in the vicinity
of Palma, Palma itself, or on the stunningly
beautiful north coast and with the regime
you prefer. You might wish to have a selfcatering apartment as opposed to full board
in a hotel, or perhaps just breakfast in order
to enjoy exploring the area and tasting local
delicacies in a different restaurant every day.
For any of these options, if you are in the
over-55 category (just one of the couple
needs to comply with this), there are very
special discounts available. We can book
the entire package for you, including flights,
transfers, insurance and accommodation,
with the guarantee of people who have been
working in the travel business for close to 20
years.
Canary Islands
We can offer the same kind of discounts and
options, with direct flights from Alicante to
Tenerife and at certain times of the year, to
Gran Canaria. You are guaranteed sun and
warm weather virtually all year round. The
Canary Islands are known as the Fortunate
Islands for a good reason. You can enjoy
an incredible variety of scenery, from the
cloudy mysterious forests of La Gomera, to
spectacular cliffs and mountains, from the
barren moon-scape near Teide, the tallest
mountain in Spain, to the
Both of these destinations have the added
convenience that you are still in Spain, so

the Costa Clida over the 11 years we have

been here. The same live act appeared on
both occasions - Christine and Red Strokes,
with their Stetsons and Petticoats show - so
it was disappointing that the attendance was
only half of last year. After all expenses were

We wish all our regulars a Happy New Year

If you need any more information, have a
look at our Facebook page.

Cruising
If cruising is your choice, pop in and get a
quote for any cruise, up to 2017. There are
a few cruising companies which have chosen
Alicante as a point for embarking, making it
even easier for those of us who live in this
area.
Day Trips to Sales
We have our new schedule set up, beginning
with a Sales Shopping Extravaganza on
Wednesday January 13th for just 15.
Festivals
Trips include the Aguilas Carnival on
February 7th, when we will have a reserved
seat to enjoy the parade; the first of the 4
that Aguilas puts on for this crazy festival.

Perhaps the best-known, Fallas in Valencia,

is on March 18th for a full day to admire the
unique statues set up all through the city,
flower offerings, parades - a never-ending
colourful pageant.
Easter is early this year and the very popular
Easter Parades in Lorca will be on March
24th & 25th. We can organize tickets for this
event and will run a coach to the parade on
Good Friday.
March 29th, Tuesday after Easter Sunday
in Murcia is the all-day festival celebrating
Spring, a colourful and fun day.

The Wine-Horse Festival in Caravaca de la

Cruz is on May 2nd.
The first summer swim on Tabarca Island
will be on June 8th.

Wednesday Trips to the Benidorm Market

start on June 29th and optional water and
theme parks there. Lots of fun for the whole
family, and perfect outing when you have
visitors.
We look forward to seeing you in the New
Year!

The Passing of Time

Unlike last month where we started
under heavy skies, this months meeting
at Aguilon Golf was so much better with
cloudless blue skies to set us off. The only
problem was that as the day wore on the
wind increased in strength and by the time
we had reached half way round it had
become quite hard to handle with balls
being blown off course.

his ball low and under the wind beheaded
one of the small tee markers in the shape

It is with great sadness that I have to

Mazarrns season continued to get better

and better in December. After losing their
seven game unbeaten run with a 2-1 home
defeat by second in the league Montecasillas
in November, Mazarrn bounced back
immediately with three successive victories
against Bala Azul, UD Los Garres and CD
Bullense. This meant that, going into the
Christmas
break,
Mazarrn
occupied
third position in the league - a remarkable
achievement considering that only one point
was gained from the opening four games of
the season. They are just two points away
from an automatic play-off position, but
obviously, well placed for a push for the end
of season play-offs.

been used to provide kit and equipment for
these very young children as they begin their
exciting football lives. Los Amigos are proud

of the season and are top of the league, so
obviously money well spent!!

at various points throughout Camposol and
Mazarrn. Pop along to the Estadio Municipal

New signing Willy has added pace to the team

and the return of goalkeeper Paco has also
given competition to the impressive Alberto
between the posts. Mazarrns away form
has been particularly impressive with five
wins, two draws and only one defeat in the
first eight away games and it is no wonder
that the travelling away support is increasing
with every game.

Captains Drive In
The Captains Drive In to celebrate the
inauguration of the new Captain, Steve Dixon,
took place on 24th December. Unfortunately
Steve has suffered a broken arm and could
not drive off, therefore his Vice Captain Des
Bunn had to step in and drive off for him.
Steve had been taking bets for charity on how
far Des would drive the ball and this was won
by Bob Evans and 142 was raised for FAST.

November was a busy month for Fuente

Old Guard with our AGM on 19th along
with our Annual Putting Contest,
which this year was won in style by Keith
Green. Well done Keith!
Later in the
month on November 26th the members
made a return trip to the excellent course
of Hacienda del Alamo for our Annual
Presentations event, but unfortunately
the windy weather was against us and the
event was postponed for two days and was
played on 28th.

34 players turned up on both occasions

and the match eventually took place in
warm and calm conditions. On the day,
our Overall Winner was Gerry McRobert
with 34 points followed by Roger Grainger
with 31 points. Gerrys score also gave him
top spot in Division One, again followed by
Roger as Runner-Up.

Christmas Club de Golf Competition

The 1st Christmas Club de Golf Competition
took place on Wednesday 9th December and
the 2nd Christmas Competition took place
on Thursday 17th December.
The prizes
for both events were presented after the
th
competition on 17 December and the results
will be shown in the next issue of the Costa
Clida Chronicle.
We all look forward
to these annual events and a good time is
usually had by all. We usually have mulled
wine and mince pies generously supplied by
The Club House.
The Christmas Dinner Dance was held on
18th December more next month!
The Costa Clida Ladies League
Unfortunately one of our teams dropped out
of the League and it was not thought possible
to have a league with only 3 teams in it,
therefore the Ladies League has folded. We
do not want to lose touch with the friends
and acquaintances we have met from other
clubs, so we have agreed we will have friendly
competition team games with the 3 different
golf course with the ladies mixed in together.
The first of these games will be scheduled
for the New Year. If you are group of Lady
Golfers who would like to be part of our group,
you are very welcome to join us and then we
could resurrect the League, as we are we will
still be playing at reciprocal golf courses at
reduced green fees. If you are interested
in joining us for next years season or would
like more information please contact Betty
Roberts at bettylloyd1560@hotmail.com

Meanwhile in Division Three, Derek

Hayward came first with 25 points with
Gavin Elbourne in second place also with
25 points decided on count back .
Nearest the Pin winners were Derek
Hayward, Roger Olorenshaw, Dave Gray
and Keith Green with three of them sharing
the Twos Money pot.
Also presented was the Order Of Merit
Award to Gerry McRobert with Roger
Olorenshaw as Runner-Up.
Our next game is at Mar Menor on January
28th. If anyone wishes to join FOGGS or
just play as a guest please contact Dave on

In Division Two, Teresa Moore came out

2015 in Figures
As we enter the New Year, Id like to take a
little time to share with you some of key facts
and figures that defined the OwnersAway
Rentals Business in 2015. For those readers
who have been following us since the
beginning in 2007, when the business was
made up of half a dozen inland fincas cared
for by Yours Truly, it makes for interesting
(and scary) reading to see how far we have
come in the last 8 years!

Throughout the quieter Winter

months my team comprises of 5
staff employed on legal contracts.
In summer, this figure rises to a
team of around 16 people, with
temporary cleaners and our support
staff and maintenance guys who are
autonomous or self employed.
We will be actively marketing over
110 properties from January 2016
and this figure is growing all the

Builders and developers had an impressive

year and this has encouraged them to
invest in new developments soon to be
announced throughout the Murcia region
and the Costa Blanca. Gone are the days
when large developments like Polaris World
resorts were appearing everywhere and in
the middle of nowhere. Todays projects
are usually much smaller in size and
ambition. Instead of 5,000-10,000 home
developments, were seeing 5/10/20 home
projects in more desirable coastal locations,
indicating that although confidence is
returning, we are still a very long way from
those heady days of 2005/6/7!
At the time of writing this column, we still
dont know the outcome of the Spanish
general election (20th Dec). However, the
polls are suggesting a possible small win

for the current government, or a coalitiontype government with a 2nd party that is
pro-business. This will give the growing
economy stability and encourage more
confidence in the property market, so all
things considered, the New Year is looking
likely to be even better than the last.
We would like to take this opportunity
to wish everyone a Healthy and
Prosperous New Year.

time.

Approximately 60% of our business

is on the coast.

More than half our Spanish clients

make a booking for 4 weeks or longer

In 2015, we handled over 700

cleaning and laundry services and we
had the muscles to prove it, having
lugged bags of laundry up and down
the stairs on Mojon Hills!

Staff lose an average of 1.5kg

each summer running around after
guests, but put on 2.5kg drinking all
that beer to rehydrate.

Bookings were split as follows in

2015:
39% Spanish clients
48% UK based clients
12% French clients
1% other nationalities
I think that the fact that we can
deal with clients in fluent Spanish
and decent French goes a long way
towards influencing these figures!!
Other nationalities included guests
from Russia, Scandinavia, Germany
and Portugal.

Ok, I am making the last one up, but in

August it certainly feels like it! 2016 looks like
it will be another busy year for the business,
as we have already taken a decent volume
of bookings and the cleaning schedule looks
as scary as ever! I am confident we will
enjoy the same level of growth and success
in 2016, thanks to the hard work of the team
here at OwnersAway.

After a full year of growing demand in 2015

- coupled with stable prices and a strong
pound - it looks like 2016 is set to continue
the upward trend in Spanish property sales.
Overseas buyers are now an important
segment in the market and increasing
quarter on quarter, the UK makes up over
20% of the foreign buyers sector. This is
good news for all British property owners in
Spain as it is more likely you will sell your
property to a British buyer in 2016. Demand
is also increasing from northern Europe
and Scandinavia as well as investment
companies in North America. The banks
are steadily disposing of their repossessed
stocks and showing very serious interest
in offering new mortgages. Also in 2015
the Spanish economy turned a corner with
quite impressive growth in the jobs market,
exports and GDP.
