ST JOHN CHRYSOSTOMOS 27 JANUARY

St Seraphim of Sarov
Concerning the care of our soul within our body, which is like a lit candle.
The candle must burn out, and we must die.
But as our soul is Immortal, so should our cares be directed more toward our
Immortal soul than our temporary body:
"...For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose
his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
(Matthew 16:26)
As we know, there is nothing in the world that can serve as ransom for our
priceless Immortal soul!!
Consequently, if our soul alone is worth more than all the riches and
treasures of this temporary world, then definitely the Kingdom of Heaven
is incomparably even more precious.
We consider our Immortal soul as being Most Precious for the reason stated
by St Makarios the Great, who believed and taught us that God did not
desire to bond and unite His Spiritual Essence with any visible creation
except mankind, whom He Loves more than any of His other creations.

St Peter of Damaskos
Consider the Reverence shown by St Paul. When he wished to speak about
God, he did not begin until he had offered to Him the Prayer and
Thanksgiving that befits Him, thus showing that it was from God that he
had his Knowledge and Strength.
And this is the right order, for Counsel comes after Prayer.
Likewise St Luke did not leave the Acts of the Apostles incomplete because
of negligence or some worldly constraint, but because he departed this
life to be with God.
We, however, leave our Tasks unfinished because of our negligence or
debility, for we do not carry out the Work of God diligently and do not
regard it as our main Task.
On the contrary, we disdain it as a kind of incidental chore.
Because of this we fail to Prosper, or indeed often regress, like those others
who turned back and no longer followed our Lord Jesus. (cf. John
6:66).
And yet, says St John Chrysostom, what our Lord Jesus said was nothing
harsh, as they thought, for He was speaking to them about Doctrine.
Noneth less, where a resolute disposition and desire are lacking, even easy
things appear difficult - although the reverse is true as well.

PSALM 117 /118

PRAISE

*Theos

Abbot Tryphon On Silence

All Orthodox Christians are aware of the importance of Prayer, Fasting, and
Almsgiving, in our Journey to God.
These three Practices are at the heart of the Great Lenten Fast.
Prayer is our way of Communicating with God on a daily basis, and Fasting
days (Wednesday and Friday) are called for throughout the Church
Year.
As Christians, we are also obligated to give Alms to the poor, as
demonstrated throughout the New Testament.
Yet we often overlook the Great Spiritual Practice of entering into Silence as
a Way to discover ourselves, and deepen our Experience with God's
Presence.
Today's technological advancements have introduced a tremendous
amount of noise into our lives in ways unthinkable to the ancients.
Not more than a hundred years ago, most families experienced Silence as
an everyday occurrence, for when the sun went down, families nestled
into warm corners of their parlours, and their kitchens, often reading
books, or simply watching a crackling fire.
Along with this quieting down of the day, silence was part of every evening.
Orthodox families were especially cognisant of the need to spend quiet time
on the eve of the Sunday Liturgy, as well as Great Feasts of the Church,
knowing that this Silence served as a preparation time for receiving
Christ's Body and Blood, during the celebration of the upcoming Liturgy.
Keeping silent by turning off radios and television sets, muting iPods, and
turning off computers, is a splendid way of allowing everyone in the
family to experience the Silence that allows us to listen for the Voice of
God, speaking in our heart.
Refraining from conversation, music, and all forms of entertainment for just
an hour or two, helps open us to an Experience of God that has become
foreign to most modern circumstances.
Silence is the means by which we may access and deepen our Relationship
with God, and develop Self-knowledge.
Silence allows us to live more harmoniously in our world, and actually listen
for the Voice of God speaking to our heart.
Saint Theophilos, Patriarch of Alexandria, placed the Virtue of Silence on
par with the Faith itself in a Synodal Letter of the year 400: "Monksif
they wish to be what they are calledwill love Silence and the
Catholic Faith (meaning Universal Faith - not Roman Catholic), for nothing at
all is more important than these two Things."
This invitation into the Silence is not for Monks only!
