CURRICULUM VITAE HARM RUDOLF KERN

EXPERIENCE
Internship at Economics and Trade Department Embassy of the Netherlands in Belgrade
2015
As intern at the Economic and Trade Department of the Dutch Embassy in Serbia and Montenegro I dealt with
macroeconomic monitoring, development economics, and support of the Dutch business community in Serbia
and Montenegro. My internship at the Embassy of the Netherlands in Belgrade was a unique opportunity to
become acquainted with the activities and practices of Dutch diplomacy in Southeast Europe. The openness and
cooperation between different departments within the Embassy allowed me to gain experience also in the fields
of rule of law, political affairs and international police affairs next to the main activities in economic affairs.
Investigative Journalism in Bosnia and Herzegovina
2014-2015
As journalist assistant (fixer) and translator, I investigated political and cultural news issues in Bosnia for
Marcel van der Steen (freelance) and Alastair Jamieson (NBC news). My work with Marcel van der Steen
resulted in reportages for Dutch public-service broadcaster NTR, commercial broadcaster RTL Nederland and
public service VRT Belgium. Throughout the year 2014, we reported among other issues on the May floods and
the general elections in October. In January and August 2015 I conducted research for two in-depth reportages
about Wahhabism in Bosnia.
Tour Guide in Bosnia and Herzegovina Sarajevo Funky Tours
2014-2015
As tour guide for the agency of Sarajevo Funky Tours, I guided tours both in the city of Sarajevo and throughout
the countryside of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Intimate teamwork, organization and communication skills in the
local language were essential in the three-man Funky Tours team. With big groups, I developed valuable skills in
feeling and guiding group dynamics. The guiding of both tourist and academic groups trained me to adapt my
knowledge of the region to short down-to-earth analyses of the complex Southeast European politics and history.
Student guide in Bosnia and Serbia History Students Union Leiden (HSVL)
2011
In a pre-selected team of 5 students, I organized an academic study trip to Bosnia and Serbia for 40 students of
the Institute for History in Leiden. During the trip I applied my knowledge of the local language and expanded
my network of contacts in the region.
Voluntary Service in Serbia Environmental Project Erdevik
2009
In the summer of 2009 I joined a three-week environmental project in the village Erdevik as a volunteer. The
project managed to clean-up the lake and the immediate environment of the village and introduced the
participants to the life and culture of a small Serbian village in Vojvodina.
