Our Key Functions


About SDMC
The SAARC Disaster Management Centre is a Regional
Centre of the SAARC Secretariat set up in October,
2006. The centre has been working extensively to fulfill
its mandate by undertaking studies and pioneering
research in disaster management, conducting
workshops and training programmes for capacity
building and creating an extensive knowledge network
to make real time data on disasters available. Further,
the centre also collaborates with specialized agencies
of international organizations to create a safer and
disaster resilient South Asia.

SDMC Vision
The SAARC Disaster Management Centre strives to
be a vibrant centre for regional cooperation for the
holistic management of disasters in South Asia to
attain sustainable development in the region

The functions of the SAARC Disaster Management Centre are:


To collect, compile, document and disseminate data,
information, case studies, indigenous knowledge and good
practices relating to disaster management particularly from
the Member Countries;
To analyze information, undertake research and
disseminate research findings on disaster management
among the Member Countries;
To develop educational materials and conduct academic
and professional courses on disaster management;
To organize training and awareness programmes for
various stakeholders on disaster management for the
Member Countries;
To develop training modules on various aspects on disaster
management and conduct programmes of Training for
Trainers including simulation exercises;
To provide assistance in the formulation of policies,
strategies, disaster management framework and any other
assistance as may be required by the Member Counties or
organizations and institutions nominated by the Member
Counties;
To undertake, organize, facilitate and participate in
workshops, conferences, seminars, lectures on various
aspects of disaster management in the Member Counties;

To undertake publications of journals, research papers


and books and establish and maintain online resource
centre in furtherance of the aforesaid objects;
To collaborate with SAARC Centres, particularly SMRC,
SCZMC and SAARC Forestry Centre to achieve synergies
in programmes and activities;
To promote and enhance regional cooperation for holistic
management of disasters in all its phases;
To conduct studies on assessment of risks of natural and
man made disasters in South Asia;
To develop regional standards, guidelines, tools,
techniques and methodologies for reducing the risks of
disasters in South Asia;
To coordinate regional response to disasters in a planned
and effective manner to reduce loss of lives and to provide
humanitarian assistance to people affected by disasters.
