Generation: Impact through AVID pilot program.

As part of the Innovation Generation program, we ran an
Innovation Competition and an Innovation Lab for
Australian volunteers in June 2015.
A call was sent out to all Scope Global AVID volunteers or
alumni members who have applied "outside-the-box"

thinking to develop a new tool, product, service, system or

process leading to great impact whilst on their assignment or in-country as part of the competition, with the
winner taking out a one week Innovation Internship at Scope Global, and 'Brain Training' tools to support
innovation development.
The two returned volunteers with the most outstanding contributions were:
Paul Bourne, a returned volunteer from the Philippines, with his Modular Octagonal Bahay Kubo for Shelter
Relief design for survivors of natural disasters; and
Stephanie Franet, current Australian volunteer in Fiji, for her design of interactive information, education and
communication (IEC) games, which are tools to assist HIV, STI and non-communicable disease education and
prevention.

The Innovation Lab placed 13 keen Australian

volunteer alumni and three experienced young
social entrepreneurs whose AVID experience was a
catalyst for social enterprises in a room to explore
how Scope Global can support AVID volunteers in
their innovative endeavours.
The Lab was a three-hour workshop, which involved
Alumni sharing their experiences in developing
businesses and social enterprises, as well as a selfParticipants at the Innovation Lab, hearing from Bottle for Botol

reflection session, and a short presentation and

discussion on key themes and lessons learned.

The Lab was a great start to future work supporting

AVID volunteers and Alumni who are keen to get inspired, active and connected to each other, and to create and
build businesses and enterprises.
