Questionnaire Conclusions

Q1. How old are you?

72% of respondents were 25 years and younger. There was one respondent
between the ages 25 and 30 and 26% of respondents were 30 years and over.
This will cause the research throughout the questionnaire to be biased towards a
younger audience and will impact on other results. Although, it may also show
diversification within the results as there is 2 contrasting generations of
participants. This must be taken into consideration when revising answers. The
age group of 25 years and younger were my initial desired target audience and
this will thus give me a good indication of the content that they like and will be
attractive to them.
Q2. What is your gender?
48.94% of respondents were male whilst 51.6% were female. 3 individuals out of
the 50 respondents skipped this question. In my initial plans, I intended for the
audience to be unisex; this will still be possible although the remaining research
will be slightly biased towards the female gender.
Q3. Who is your favourite rock band?
There was a wide variety of favourite bands listed and most responses were
different to one another, giving me a large variety of bands to include within the
feature content in my magazine. The most popular responses were; Blink 182,
The Killers, Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters, Muse and AC/DC and Stone Roses.
Most of whom are recent bands in the music industry and formed in 1990 2010,
this shows a correlation to question 1 as the bands may be familiar to the
generations born in the 1990s: 25 and under. Yet, as the questionnaire is
unanimous I cannot differentiate whom suggested which artist.
Q4. Who is your favourite solo artist?
There were only a few rock related responses that collated more than one vote;
Jake Bugg: a singer/songwriter and guitarist aged 21, Jimi Hendrix: rock
singer/songwriter and guitarist, and Jon Bon Jovi, singer-songwriter, record
producer, philanthropist, and actor. The rest of the results did not link to the rock
music genre with artists such as Eminem, Madonna and Justin Bieber being
listed indicating that the question may not have been specific enough and
therefore specific results are unusable for my rock music magazine. The results
that are suitable can be used within my feature content of interviews and
reviews.
Q5. Which of these rock bands do you listen to?
The most listened to artists concluded to be Greenday with 14.84% of votes,
Muse 13.74%, Blink 182 13.19%, Guns n Roses 10.99% and Royal Blood 9.89%.
Using this information, I could include the names of these bands on the cover of
my magazine to attract more attention as they appear to be the most popular
rock bands. However, the results may be biased as the band names were pretyped options and produced and written by the respondents themselves.
Q6. What three words do you associate with the rock music genre?

When asked what three words do you associate with rock music 42% of
respondents included the word loud in their answer. The second most popular
answer was guitar chosen by 18% of individuals. 12% of people said noisy,
whilst 10% said black. I will use these words when I come up with headlines
and sublines to feature articles so that people will relate the content with the
rock genre even more.
Q7. What onomatopoeic word do you associate with rock?
The most popular onomatopoeic words that came into peoples minds when
thinking of the rock genre were BANG with 17 suggestions, CRASH with
suggested by 9 respondents and BOOM with 7. Using this information, I could
form the title for my magazine.
Q8. What colours do you associate with rock?
Colours most associated with rock music appear to be black, with 100% of
people suggesting this colour, 62% of people said red followed by white with
28% of votes. The colours purple and grey were also exceptions with 24% of
votes each. Using this information, I will make the colour scheme of my
magazine black, white and red as these are the colours that would indicate to
people that the magazine is within the rock genre and attract the audience eye
to the magazine. I could use purple and grey as feature/highlight colours within
the magazine.
Q9. What are your three favourite colours?
The 1st, 2nd and 3rd most popular favourite colours in the questionnaire appeared
to be blue (1st) with 26 people saying it was their favourite colour. Black in 2 nd
with 21 votes and purple with 20 people in 3 rd. This links to question 8 as
peoples favourite colours are black purple which I will use in my colour scheme
as they are related to rock. I could also incorporate red as it is the 4 th favourite
colour with 17 votes so would still be appropriate to use as a main colour and will
attract the eye of the audience.
Q10. Please rate the importance of these features in a music magazine
Using the results to question 10 I will be able to know what to prioritise and
include more of in my production when creating my magazine. The most
important aspects to a music magazine, voted by the audience, was content,
images and quality. This shows that they are more interested in how well the
magazine is produced and the content it contains than the graphological aspects
such as font style and size.
Q11. How often do you buy music magazines?
44% of respondents said that they bought a music magazine every month. In my
initial plans, I planned to produce my magazine monthly. Therefore, I shall
continue with this plan to produce my magazine each month. I feel that if it was
a yearly magazine, there would be too much content over too wide a time period
and articles would no longer be relevant.
Q12. How much would you be willing to pay for a music magazine?

The majority of people, 44%, said that they would only be willing to pay 2.00 <
3.00 for a music magazine. However, the question did not specify the amount
of time between publications of the magazine. 2.00 < 3.00 is the general
price for a weekly published magazine and would be too cheap to charge for a
monthly magazine. 38% of people said that they would be willing to pay 3.00 <
4.00 which is more reasonably priced for a monthly magazine. Therefore, I will
use this result to conclude the price of my magazine at 3.99 as it got the 2 nd
highest amount of votes.
Q13. Would you buy a subscription to a magazine?
63.83% of people said that they would not buy a subscription to a magazine, yet
36.17% of people would. I will include a subscription option in my magazine as it
therefore caters for audience wants instead of the favouring the vast majority
and reaches different segments of the market.
Q14. Rate the importance of the following content to the enjoyment of a music
magazine
The most important content to the audiences enjoyment of a music magazine
appeared to be artist interviews. Using this information, I plan to include a lot of
artist interview content to meet demand for the feature. The next important
appeared to be reviews of festivals, albums and concerts followed by a gig
guide. A gig guide could be a regular feature in the magazine and reviews
could be a feature article. Adverts appear to be the least important.
Q15. Is there any content in a music magazine that you dont bother reading?
Adverts came up frequently when asked what content people dont bother
reading. This is a correlation with question 14, however adverts are how
magazines make money. Knowing that adverts irritate the audience, I will aim to
set out my magazine in such a way that the adverts do not interfere with the
audiences enjoyment of the magazine.
Q16. What is your current favourite music magazine?
Kerrang! Was the most popular music magazine with 36.23% of votes. I believe
this could be because Kerrang! Is very distinctive for its aesthetic relation to rock
music and also wide range of content. This was followed by Q with 27.52% and
Rolling Stone magazine at 24.64%, however both magazines are less related to
rock music and more circulated around all genres of music is general. I will use
this information to get inspiration from these magazines in terms of content and
layout within the magazine.
Q17. What is your occupation?
Most people who answered my questionnaire were students, 50%, which is the
original target audience I planned for my magazine. This impacts on the rest of
my information gained from the questionnaire and gives more of a targeted
approach. My target audience will remain the same.
Q18. What extras do you like in a music magazine?
29.79% of people said that they liked iTunes vouchers, 28.72% said discounts,
15.96% said posters, 14.89% CDs and 10.64% competitions. As each option has
some interest I will incorporate each into my magazine. I will include a CD in a

section of every issue of my magazine, have a competition regular section, and a

discounts regular section where offers are advertised. I will also include posters
and iTunes vouchers.
Q19. How regularly do you attend to gigs?
42.86% of people who answered my questionnaire attended gigs up to 5 times a
year, and 28.57% of people said once a year. This indicates to me that the
majority of my audience attend live gigs. Therefore, I will include a regular
feature of a gig guide to advertise gigs to the audience giving them more
relevant content and also have a regular feature of gig reviews.
Q20. How often do you buy music?
39.58% of people purchase music monthly, this could link into question 18. As
the magazine is published monthly, iTunes vouchers and discounts may be useful
to people who purchase music this frequently and may be a unique selling point
for my magazine.
Q21. What us your preferred method to purchase music?
Downloads had the largest demand with 78.26% of the vote. As this is the most
desired method of purchasing music, it is more of a reason for me to include
iTunes and downloads vouchers as it will give a unique selling point.
Q22. Do you play an instrument, if so what do you play?
Around 1/6 of people play guitar, the rest do not play an instrument. I could use
this information by incorporating it into the discounts that I could offer within the
magazine or include a regular feature of a page of music to play on the guitar.
Q23. What festivals do you attend?
Leeds is the main indie/rock music festival and the majority of participants in my
questionnaire had attended the festival at 35.94%, followed by Parklife 23.44%
and Glastonbury 15.62% however these festivals are more pop culture related.
I could produce a special edition magazine that circulates around festivals. This
would be a unique idea as it has never been produced before.
