DATE: December 9th, 2014 FORM: 9th grade NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 26 TIMING: 50 minutes TITLE OF THE LESSON: TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION TYPE OF LESSON: integrated skills TOPIC: devices used in education Function: offering information about how can be used technology in education Grammar: revision of compound nouns LANGUAGE SKILLS: listening, speaking, reading, writing TYPE OF INTERACTION: whole class, individual work, pair work, group work GENERAL AIMS: - to activate the background knowledge of technology vocabulary -to introduce the new vocabulary around the topic -to create interest in the topic - to improve students ability to speak - to activate the students in the proces of reading and writing - to enhance the studentsinterest by having fun -to express flexibility while working in groups -to get students practise the new vocabulary SPECIFIC AIMS: - By the end of the lesson students will be able : to use the new vocabulary related to technology to describe devices and their usage orally to make compound nouns related to technology to write about technology and their usage TEACHING TECHNICQUES: brainstorming, matching pictures with labels, matching words, reading approach, writing approach, questions and answers, game. MATERIALS NEEDED: blackboard, chalk, notebooks, handouts, pictures.
EVALUATION: Students will be evaluated based on the participation in classrooms discussions
ASSUMPTIONS: - The students know some words related to technology. -The students know how to form compound nouns. ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS: -Students may not understand all the vocabulary used. -Students might have a tendency to use the language incorrectly. -Students might have difficulties in solving tasks. POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS: -I will give them the translation of some words. -I will help them with the use of language. -I will keep my eyes open and go to help any individuals who look puzzled with the tasks. STAGES: ACTIVITY 1: WARM-UP AIMS: - to warm students up - to draw the students attention - to check the homework TIMING: 5 minutes INTERACTION:T-Ss, Ss-T CLASS MANAGEMENT: whole class SKILLS: speaking TECHNIQUES: question-answer exchanges PROCEDURE: Informal conversation: - greetings; - How are you? - Who is on duty today? - Who is absent today? T checks students homework. ACTIVITY 2: LEAD -IN AIMS: - to get Ss into the new topic -to arise expectation TMING: 6 minutes INTERACTION: T-Ss, Ss-T CLASS MANAGEMENT: whole class; individual work SKILLS: speaking, reading, writing TECHNIQUE: brainstorming; label pictures with words given. PROCEDURE: T tells Ss the title of the new lesson Technology in Education T asks questions to involve and motivate SS to participate in the activity (brainstorming) -Do you use technology in school / at home?
-What kind of technology?
-Give some examples -On what purpose do you use? Ss answers the question. T gives handouts and require the students to label the pictures with the words given. SS compile the task. ACTIVITY 3: READING & WRITING AIMS: - to develop reading skills -to learn new words -to decode the meaning and encourage students to infer the meaning - to write expressions related to the topic TIMING: 14 minutes INTERACTION: T-Ss, S-S, S-T CLASS MANAGEMENT: whole class; individual work, pair work SKILLS: reading, writing TECHNIQUES: global reading, writing - arranging jumbled words and sentences PROCEDURE: T gives other handouts and invites the students to work in pair to solve the exercise no.1-a); to read the label below pictures, the school subjects and activities written in this exercise. Then SS have to choose for each device the activities which can be used in different classes and write in their notebooks . T explain and translate some unknown words. SS read, then discus with their pair mate and choose for each device the appropriate activities they can do. T monitors the activity and helps to decode the meaning. SS are asked to tell their choice to the class. T writes down on the blackboard. ACTIVITY 4: SPEAKING PRACTICE AND PERSONALIZATION AIMS: - to promote speaking -to practise new vocabulary TIMING: 10 minutes CLASS MANAGEMENT: whole class SKILLS: speaking TECHNIQUES: question answer exchanges PROCEDURE: T invites students to make sentences with the words written on the blackboard T offers some prompts Ss might need in order to talk about the activities that can be done in different classes with the equipment given in the exercise. SS make sentences explaining what they can do in the class with different devices. T asks some questions to personalize the topic:
- Which of these devices do you use in school?
-Did you enjoy the lesson? / Why not? -Which device is the most useful in school? /Why? ACTIVITY 5: MATCHING EXERCISE AIMS: - to revise compound nouns - to foster pair work TIMING: 5 minutes INTERACTION: Ss-Ss, S-T T- Ss CLASS MANAGEMENT: pair work; SKILLS: reading, writing TECHNIQUES: matching words PROCEDURE: T invites SS to form compound nouns by matching the words from ex. no.2 and write down in their notebook. SS compile the task. ACTIVITY 6: GAME AIMS: - to make the students interact - to motivate English learning by having fun TIMING: 5 minutes INTERACTION: Ss-Ss CLASS MANAGEMENT: group work SKILLS: speaking TECHNIQUES: role-play PROCEDURE: T group the students into two groups, one group choose a device and the other have to guess what the device is by putting questions. The Winner is the team who guesses quicker what device it is. ACTIVITY 7: EVALUATION AND HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT - FOLLOW-UP AIMS: -to evaluate students activity; -to assign students follow-up activity - to develop written skills TIMING: 5 minutes INTERACTION: T-Ss, CLASS MANAGEMENT: whole class, individual work SKILLS: writing TECHNIQUES: evaluation and writing assignment PROCEDURE: Teacher evaluates students activity during the class, grades some of them. Students are assigned to write a short composition about their mobile phones, for what purpose they can use them and how would be their life without phones.
