VALUE OF DISCIPLINE IN LIFE

Discipline is an important virtue. Life without discipline is just like a ship without a rudder. It is
necessary for expressing other virtues. It is absolutely essential for success in life. Discipline refers to
orderliness in life which results from our adherence to certain code of conduct prepared by the
learned people. It also implies our respect to physical and moral laws in our society.
Without discipline, it is very difficult to lead a happy life in society. There will be indiscipline and
chaos if we try to live in our own way. Both, individual and society will be in jeopardy.
We observe discipline in nature. The earth and the moon revolve around the sun in a disciplined way.
As a result, night and day recur after twelve hours. We experience the cycle of seasons on the earth.
Our physical existence is possible only due to a great discipline in the external nature. We grow when
all the limbs and the respective capacity of different organs of our body grow in a disciplined way.
Discipline can be applied in all walks of life. It is essential for us at home, for students in school and
college, for players in play ground, for soldiers in battlefield. A factory with a team of disciplined
workers and engineers will run smoothly and yield profit.
Discipline plays an important role in building a nation. It has good impact on the child's mind too.
He passes through discipline since his childhood, becomes a civilized citizen in future. He leads a
decent life.
A team of experienced players often lose the match because of indiscipline in the team. A horrible
battle can be won by a disciplined army.
Discipline is very important in a student's life. He must obey his teachers. He must abide by the rules
in school. If he violates them, he suffers a great deal in his future. A disciplined student can achieve
success. Similarly, a teacher without discipline in his life cannot be an ideal teacher.
Self-discipline is very important. Spiritual persons practice it to attain the liberty of soul. Selfdiscipline lies in restraining our unruly desires and ugly

impulses.

Thus, discipline is essential everywhere for all.

ROLE OF YOUTH IN NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Young people possess energy, but it should be channelized in the right direction. Misguided youth
may do greater harm to the society than even the worst enemy can do. Moreover, it is on the
shoulders of the young that the future of the country rests because they represent new values, new
thinking and the new ways of life.
Society should mould itself according to the thinking of the young because it is difficult for the
older generation to have new thinking. The young should always look with hope and confidence to
the future. They must have the spirit to work among the masses and also give a sense of direction for
the others to follow.
Political freedom gives duties as well in responsibilities. These are more important as the case of
India because we want to be free from poverty, disease and all types of divisive forces. Our political
freedom must create conditions not only for better life but also for peace for the rest of the world.
The youth of India should be inspired with these ideas and make them as popular with the people as
it is possible.
In fact the older generation becomes hardened in their thinking. So it is difficult for them to adopt a
new path. The faith of the young people is never so rigid. They can adopt, modify and change their
ideas according to the demands of the circumstances. So youth of India should take this
responsibility on their shoulders.
Another responsibility which Indian youth will have to take is to revive our culture. If we break with
our culture, we misdirect the forces of change and as a result of it no progress is made by the society.
Radhakrishnan goes to the extent of saying, "Inattention to our culture in our universities is to no
small extent responsible for the increasing unrest among the student". His advice to the young is
that they should "enter more fully into the experiences and ideals of the race, if they are to live more
abundantly". It is our culture that helped India to survive despite a number of destructive forces
working against it.
The great ideas enshrined in our culture will help us to set the energies of nation in the proper
direction. So if the younger generation does not take up this challenge, they would be almost the
enemies of the future.
The Young people of India should try to give a practical shape to the ideals of democracy which have
kept before us. An ordinary person is not adventurous enough to take up the challenges to adopt
certain ideals which may be good for the nation. Generally the actions of the individuals are guided
by the normal way of thinking and also by the normal conventions. It is only the young who can
accept unconventional ideas with spirit and enthusiasm.
Various social movements which seem to be the basis of progress need the help of the younger
generations. For example, for the older generation the idea of having planned families might not be
proper and at moments they might consider it a political move on the part of the party in power. It is
so because their conventional thinking does not agree with the new set up of circumstances. But the

younger generation has vision of the future and is guided by that very vision. So "a nation is built in
its educational institutions" through younger generations.
India is wedded to the policy of industrial development, but no industry can make progress till men
are properly trained and technologists help in the development of the industrial complex of the
country. Only the new generation can help. It may also be understood that the world is standing on
the threshold of supreme catastrophe and measureless record. It is the young who can give
appropriate direction to these forces.
Younger generation in India has always been depending upon the older generation. Our social set up
did allow them to have independent thinking and independent way of life. But now younger
generation is to mould the thinking of the older generation. They will have to give proper shape and
form to the policies which might have been out-dated and worn out. Only the young in India can
seize the opportunities for doing something for the country. So they will give new enthusiasm and
energy to carry forward the programme which has been chalked out for the country.

IMPACT OF ADVERTISEMENTS
If advertisements merely sold products, it would cause less critical concern than it does, but it sells
images, dreams and ideal ways of life. It sells, and then reinforces time and again, values - those of
consumerism and class consciousness; and it trades in stereotypes.
As discussed earlier, advertising creates and sustains an ideology of consumption and it is a social
force affecting Indian homes today. Therefore, its impact should be analyzed.
Advertising is a social institution and a necessary social evil. Advertising is a social institution and
its cost and benefit should be evaluated to determine the total impact of advertising on our social
welfare the issue is not whether advertising is perfect, but whether the benefits of
advertising outweigh the costs making social welfare greater than advertising.
Sethi (1997) said that advertising is one of the functions of mass communication. All productivity
relies on this medium of mass communication. Advertising diffuses information about commodities,
markets them and persuades the common man of their place in his life.
In fact advertising does more than this. It plays a role in social change. It celebrates change and
internalizes change for those who become better by using a certain product/service. In short,
advertising is the voice of technology; because of that it represents the intention to affect life.
Advertising, though originally used to market products, now, unfortunately, it seems to market
feelings, sensations and styles of life; an astounding 'revolution in manners and morals'. All this has
been possible through an efficient communication network which has revolutionized changes.
The first impact that one gets from the advertisement is that the viewers have no choice of their own
in making preference for the consumer goods they want to use in daily life. The advertisement
imposes choices and preferences on the public mind through language, conversation, jingles, etc.
This kind of aggression on the minds of the people, coming from different strata of the society, can
create disturbances on traditional way of life of some category of people. In the long run, it is likely
that social and cultural transformations of revolutionary nature are created in the society through
such programmes.
On the credit side, advertising has speeded the introduction of useful inventions. It has spread
markets, reduced the price of goods, accelerated turnover and kept people in employment.
The relentless propaganda on behalf of goods in general is considered by many a dangerous mode of
brain washing in that advertising's central function appears to create desires that previously did not

exist, or rather anxieties which respond to the advertisements (by going out and buying the
advertised product or service) helps to assuage but only temporarily.
Advertising in India has created an incredible awareness among the people in the past decade
growing into big industry. It was grown along with the press and today it has found its way into the
other two media -Radio and Television.
Advertising which was originally an American concept, has found its place in a country like India, so
much so that the number of commercials have doubled in the media. Television is the most sought
after medium for advertising.
At the moment, the media in order to earn revenue through advertising are implicated in creating a
market for consumer goods.
Though it is largely an urban phenomenon, the same commercial advertisements on television reach
rural areas and can have disturbing effects on rural people, where wants are encouraged, whose
appetite for luxury goods and services is whetted. This can lead to a sense of frustration among those
who cannot afford them.
Chunnawala and Sethia have rightly pointed out that advertising in India has played a vital role in
the development process by creating a demand for consumer goods and raising the living standards
of millions. It is not irrelevant or luxury oriented as it has been made out to be.
A substantial amount of advertising expenses are utilized on advertisements of capital goods,
intermediaries, consumer durables and services, most of which promote investment, production and
employment.
Further, advertising has a definite role to play in rural development, and Indian advertising has
made some progress in this direction as well. Advertisements of fertilizers, pesticides, farming
equipment, and cattle feed, etc. have reached rural market successfully.

NATIONAL INTEGRATION
India has a unique and wonderful culture embracing in diversities of castes, languages
and religions. It is a land of different castes, creeds etc. Inspite of these divergences there was always
a general feeling oneness and Indianness.
All the cultural | tradition of India is characterized by unity in diversity. The fundamental unity was
never lost inspite of all changes and developments.

During the great Indian Freedom Movement people with difference of languages, regions, castes and
creeds etc. join their hands to drive out British power from the soil of India. It truly speaks the
concept of "United we stand divided we fall".
But in recent years, unprecedented havoc of communalism, terrorism, casteism, linguism and
provincialism raised its ugly heads in different pockets of India. The menace of antisocial and
antinational force posed a severe challenge to the survival of democracy in our country. Even
the life of common people is in peril.
Therefore after Independence national integration has become a problem for us. We are thinking in
terms of fostering understanding among the people of this subcontinent through mass consciousness
and education.
Pandit Nehru, once said that "Political Integration has already taken place but what I am after is
something much deeper than that an emotional integration of Indian people so that two may be
welded into one strong national unity, maintaining at the same time all our wonderful diversity"
National unity or national integration finds its expression through the feeling of oneness, common,
identity, nationalism patriotism and sense of loyalty towards the nation. When the feeling of
cooperation and brotherhood manifests itself in the sense of mutual oneness among the citizens of
the nation become conscious of national unity identity and integrity.
National integration is a sentiment in which the people of a country have the feeling of living
together with goodwill for all, the desire of Co-operation and sympathy for each other, the
willingness to forget difference of caste, language, religion and region etc. to work together for the
welfare of the country.
Above all, the duty consciousness as the citizens of a multi-religious and multilingual country. A man
being imbibe with national, Unity forgets all bias and differences.
