Section A [45 marks]

Answer all questions in this section.
1.

The amount of rainfall, in mm, recorded in a week for the town of Seremban is given as follows:
5.2 10.3 2.8 14.6 8.8 7.6 1.5
(a) Calculate the mean and standard deviation of the data shown above.
13.1/II/L [4marks]
(b) Calculate the median and hence, determine Pearsons coefficient of skewness. Comment on
the distribution of the data.

2.

The probability of a car fitted with a security alarm system being stolen is 0.05 whereas the
probability that it will be stolen if it had not been fitted with a security alarm system is 0.15. It is
known that 60% of the cars have been fitted with security alarm systems.
(i) Find the probability that a randomly chosen car will be stolen.
14/II/L [2marks]
(ii) If a car had been reported stolen, find the probability that it had been fitted with a security
alarm system.

The probability of a drawing pin landing point up when dropped onto a horizontal floor from a
height of one metre is denoted by p. When the drawing pin is dropped 25 times it lands point up

Test, at the 5% level of significance, whether or not there is any association between the
treatment of the trees and their survival. State your hypotheses and conclusion clearly.

Section B [15 marks]
Answer onlyone question in this section.
7(a) Data files on computers have sizes measured in megabytes. When files are sent from one
computer to another down a communications link, the number of errors has a Poisson
distribution. On average, there is one error for every 10 megabytes of data.
(i) Find the probability that a 3 megabyte file is transmitted
-without error,
15.4/II/M [3marks]
-with 2 or more errors.
15.4/II/H [3marks]
(ii) Show that a file which has a 95% chance of being transmitted without error is a little over
half a megabyte in size.
15.4/II/H[2marks]
(b) The probability that a person suffers from a particular health condition is 0.01.
(i) Using a suitable approximation, find the probability that in a randomly chosen sample of
800 people, fewer than 3 suffer from the health condition.
15.5/III/H [4marks]
(ii) Find the minimum sample size in order that the probability of including at least one with the
health condition is greater than 95%.

8.

A garage sells both leaded and unleaded petrol. The distribution of the values of sales for each
type is normal. During 1990 the standard deviation of individual sales of each type of petrol is
RM3.25. The mean of the individual sales of leaded petrol during this time is RM8.72. A
random sample of 100 individual sales of unleaded petrol gave a mean of RM9.71. Calculate
(a) an interval within which 90% of the sales of leaded petrol will lie, 16.2/II/M [3 marks]
(b) a 95% confidence interval for the mean sales of unleaded petrol.
16.2/II/M[3 marks]
The mean of the sales of unleaded petrol for 1989 was RM9.10.
(c) Using a 5% significance level, investigate whether there is sufficient evidence to conclude
that the mean of all the 1990 unleaded sales was greater than the mean of the 1989 sales.
17/III/H [6marks]
(d) Find the size of the sample that should be taken so that the garage proprietor can be 95%
certain that the sample mean of sales of unleaded petrol during 1990 will differ from the
true mean by less than 50 sen.
