General objectives
The aim of this lesson is to:
1. Become knowledgeable about the demographic changes that has taken place.
2. Assess the impact of the Europeans on the indigenous peoples up to 1600..
Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
1. Identify the positive and negative ways in which the European has impacted on the
indigenous people.
2. Use the map the Caribbean to identify and locate the countries that the European has
colonized.

Content outline:
1. The European nations fought over and colonized the various Caribbean islands. Apart
from Spain, the countries most active in the region were Britian, France and the
Netherlands. Germany, Sweden, Malta, and Denmark also had colonists at various times
and from thet19th century the USA had economic and military interests in the Caribbean.
Impact of the Europeans on the Indigenous peoples.
2. Genocide, the Indigenous populations was decreased so considerably under Spanish rule
only minority groups existed throughout the Caribbean region.
3. Forced labor or systems of enslavement were introduced. Repartamiento system- a
percentage of the Indigenous male population between the ages of 18 and 60 was recruited
to work for a Spaniard for a week for pay. However, they were hardly ever paid.
Encomienda system- a form of slavery introduced by the Spanish. Smaller groups of
Indigenous people were allocated to a few privileged Spaniards (known as
encomenderos). The encomendero was granted a parcel of land, with the right to exact
tribute (usually in the form of labor or crops, or both) from the Indigenous people living
on the land. In return, he was expected to convert them to Christianity and protect them.
4. New types of diseases were introduced, Indigenous peoples were not immune to diseases
such as smallpox and chickenpox.
5. Families were broken up, adult males were moved from place to place by Spaniards.
Many Kalinago males were killed in wars with the Spaniards.
6. Indigenous agricultural systems were destroyed. The production of crops by Indigenous
peoples was affected. The Spaniards brought animals often the animals were placed to
graze in the agricultural fields of the Indigenous people.

not want them to grow up under such conditions.

Indigenous way of life, the Europeans then also changed the flora, fauna and the
population itself. They brought new plants. Coconut trees, mangoes, bananas, oranges and

Procedure:
Introduction:
The lesson will be introduced by showing a video to the students about the impact of the
Europeans on the indigenous people.

Step 1: A class discussion will take place based on the video that was presented to them.
Step 3: Students will read notes on strips of paper to reinforce what was shown in the video.
Step 4: The students will identify some countries which the European colonized on the map of
the Caribbean.
Step 5: Notes will be given to the students on the topic. The notes will be presented in a power
point presentation.

Summary
These questions will be answered orally
List some of the negative impact the Europeans had on the Indigenous people.
Name some of the diseases that affect the indigenous people during the arrival of the European?
(At least three)
Cumulating Activity
Students will be asked to write a short story describing the positive and negative impact that the
European had on the indigenous people.
Assignment
The students will be asked to read up on the next topic for class Colonization and make notes.
