The power unit of the large BMW.

Experts describe it as the best six-cylinder
power unit in the world . The combination of
performance and smooth running is the
result of advanced technical knowledge.
emanating from years of research. In fact the
design represents the culmination of experience and constant progress in the car
development.
The major features of these power units are
not only their top speed or their acceleration (from 0 to 100 km/h in 7 .8 seconds).
But the si lent elegance with which power is
developed. It is created in the t ri ple hemisphere combustion chambers : the f uel/a ir
mixture is re leased evenly by a precise ly
ca lculated control system - concent rated
around the spark plug.
Combustion in t he cylinders is smooth and
clean. w ith the minimum of pollution. The
performance process is incredibly smooth.
At low as well as high speeds.
As well as efficient combustion: economy of
movement. Precision engine balancing
achieves silent. vibration-free running. The
result: effortless acceleration for safe overtaking . High cruising speeds. Flexibility in
heavy town traffic. The crankshaft has seven
main bearings with 12 counter weights and
torsional vibration stabi lizer. With these
technica l innovations. w ith f ive overhead
camshaft bearings and with many other
design refinements. BMW have combined the
best principles of the rel iable. economica l
piston engine with the smooth running of
the turbine.

BMW - sheer driving pleasure

Printed in Western Germany

Sovereignty
A 'perfect' car must possess
that fine ly-balanced combination of driving characteristics
and driving comfort which
transmits to the driver someth ing of its vitality, its ease of
handling and its reliabi li ty.
This leads to that re laxed
"sovereign" feeling of being

able to master al l driving and

traffic situations and to use the
intrinsical ly superior qual ities
of one's own car intelligently
and respons ibly.
The most advanced form of
this "sovereignty" is expressed
by the BMW six cyli nder range
of saloons, cars in that small

group of the top international

class - but cars with those
specific BMW features.
A BMW six cyli nder saloon is
thus always the logica l cho ice
fo r any driver wanting a car
w ith characte ristics that reflect
his own personal qual ities of
power, dynamism and vitality.

Obligation and Preference

There are only a few cars
whose individuality and superiority are attributes to be
coveted by the exceptionally
successful man. One classic
example is the BMW range of
six cylinder saloons, offering a
choice of five models:
BMW 2500, BMW 2800, BMW
3.0 S, BMW 3.0 Si, BMW 3.3 L.
Different in power, performance
and equipment but similar in
the uniqueness of the ir
concept.
These cars do not on ly offer
qualities that are synonymous
with top quality cars of international class, such as advanced technology, safety, comfo rt
and equipment, they offer an
additional advantage: a finely
balanced sum of qualities that
are suitable for everyday use,
together with a spec ial vitality;
in effect, a harmonious combination of high performance,
style and economy.
These cars are the result of
BMW's view that an obligation
to providing re levant qualities
for everyday driving requirements shou ld not exclude a
preference for cars offering

stimulating driving characteristics. The BMW six cylinder

range does combine unusual
comfort and distinctive appearance w ith remarkable driving
characteristics, and that unmistakable BMW driving "feel".
In this way, the driver can
always take advantage of the
former without re linquishing
the latter.
There are cars which peop le
drive because they can afford
them. People who enjoy driving
afford BMWs.
With BMW design is an in-built element
The incomparable aesthetic design
of the BMW six cylinder models is not
an end in itself, but the result of functio nal planning. They possess elegant and
dynamic lines and a well balanced
relationship between the car body and
window areas. Although generously
designed, the BMW six cylinder saloons
are made as compact as possible.
They are just the right size for traffic,
manageable, manoeuverable and distinctive. The design and function of
every detail of the car is evidence that
everything was first planned and then
incorporated: not the r~verse.
The visual elegance of the BMW
six cylinder saloons is enhanced by the
superior quality of its paint: an elegance which is made to last by BMW's
attention to detail in preventing rust.

The body is given an anti-rust undercoat in an electrophoretic immersion

bath, and then finished with several
layers of paint. Careful under-sealing
and BMW's cavity rust proofing process
(reaching into every corner) thoroughly
ensure the long life and resale value
of all BMW cars.

Long live the fine distinction

Just as, on the one hand,
BMW do make a fine distinction
between what is realistically
acceptable and what is really
ex c lusive, BMW design is not
solely attained thro ugh size,
weight or accent on preten tiousness; similarly, on the
other hand, exclusivity would
be unthinkable without vitality
and manoeuverability. This
phi losophy is apparent in every
BMW model. The most attractive example of this realistic

exclusivity is the BMW 3.3 L.

This combines a larger body
(10 ems longer than the other
BMW six cylinder saloons)
and a comp letely new dimension in interior fittings and
equipment, with a hi gher
degree of driving performance
and economy, synonymous
with BMW.
Thus the BMW 3.3 L is a car
that meets the requirements
of the most discriminating
driver. A car which is as much

The protective rubber edged wrap -around strip emphasises

the car's contours.
The BMW 3.3 L's Halogen double headlights a1e fitted with washers
and wipers. These ensure optimum visibility in bad weather
conditions and can be fitted as special equipment to other models
in the range. Visibility from behind is assured by the four-compartment rear lighting unit with large surface areas containing the
rear lights and fog lights.

a joy to drive as to be driven in.

A BMW is an unusual car. The BMW
3.3 L is an unusual BMW! Standard
euipment includes: power-assisted
steering, automatic transmission, insulated windows, light alloy wheels,
electric sun-roof, electric windows front
and rear, leather-covered steering
wheel, leather upholstery, individual
rear seats, automatic front and rear
safety belts, stereo-radio equipment
with automatic aerial. Two reading lamps

reduce unsprung weight and thus further improve the already
excellent road holding qualities of the superior suspension system.
The turbo-effect of these wheels contributes to even better ventilation
of the disc brakes.

The exceptional ease

of operating a BMW's
controls has one
obvious advantage:
exceptional driving
safety.
Effortless, safe control in modern car
design is one of the essential prerequisites for driving safety. As a result,

BMW has systematically and deliberately studied, by means of bio-mechanically simulated tests, those safety
measures that can be incorporated into
control systems. An effective routine
has thus been developed for the driver,
enabling him to control his car with
the minimum of effort, and in this way
direct his undivided attention to traffic
situations. The logical and functional
display of all the car's control systems
minimises any errors in the receipt
and interpretation of information regarding the car's situation.

For BMW driving comfort is not an art

but a science
Comfort of the level expressed in the BMW six cylinder
saloons is not just a stylish
environment. It takes into
account the systematic wellbeing of the driver, enabling
him to drive with even greater
relaxation, and thus control
unexpected situatio
easily.
The driving
comfort and the
sophisticated
'feel' of the BMW
six cylinder
saloons is the
direct result of
the carefully
researched
interaction of
all factors.
Factors such as
the first class
suspension
system and its
effect on seating
position, vis ibility
and the re lation ship between
pedals, steering
wheel and operating controls.
The new BMW
Y.'.Stem for
seating, visibility
and operating
controls.
No two drivers
,__ __
are alike.
For this reason
the BMW six
cylinder saloons
The seats of the BMW six cylinder
saloons (in the case of the 3.3 L leather
upholstery is standard) which have been
developed at considerable expense in
material and construction , conform to
rigorous ergonomic principles. They

enable the positions of pedals

and steering wheel to be
adjusted for arm and leg length,
and the seating position and
level of visibility to be adjusted
for body size. For these requirements, the BMW six cylinder
models have a steering wheel
with axial adjustment and a
driver's seat with individual

adjustment in two dimensions:

distance from pedals and seat
height, as well as the rake of
the back rest. This new seating,
steering and control system
permits the car to be tailored
exactly to its driver.

have a new type of upholstery which
combines and ideal posture, due to
form-moulding and firmness.
The seat suspension is co-ordinated
with the suspension system of the car
to ensure a really smooth ride.

The seat anchorage points and the

complete seating mechanism have been
carefully and reliably tested for durability - an important factor for interior
safety in case of collision.

BMW's individual style of comfort:

Driving ease is the aim - Driving safety is the result
The comprehensive level of
comfort in the BMW six cylinder
saloons is accentuated in
every detail.
A further contribution to driving safety is automatic transmission, optional in the case of
the BMW 2500, the 2800 and
the 3.0S (standard on the 3.3 L).
With BMW this represents a
perfectly integrated part of the
total transmission system.
Automatic transmission suits
the BMW six cylinder power
unit particularly well because of
its favourable torque curve,
which produces high torque
over a wide range of engine
revolutions. In this way the
automatic transmission acts as
a co-pilot taking the operation
over from the driver, yet without influencing his freedom
of decision.
Power assisted steering
ensures effortless comfort in all
driving conditions - whether
at high speeds, manoeuvring
or parking. This is standard
equipment on the 3.3 L
and an optional extra on
the other models.
On request, an outstandingly effective air conditioning system can be
fitted in any of the BMW
six cylinder saloons.
This assures consistent and pleasant
conditions, even
in extreme temperatures, dust
and heat remain outside.
Insulated glass
all round reduces
penetration of
strong sun light and thereby
ensures a comfortable tempe-

rature inside the car. (Standard

on the 3.3 L, otherwise optional.)

medium, short and UHF) is

of the rear seat (which forms two individual armchairs) are set at a comfortable angle. This is particularly so with
the BMW 3.3 L as the lengthened body
offers distinct advantages for the rear
passengers. On the BMW 3.3 L,
automatic seat belts at the rear are
standard equipment, as well as foot-well
heating and rear head restraints. The latter two also apply to the BMW
3.0 S and 3.0 Si. (Available as optional
extras on other models.)

Suspension of the BMW six cylinder

range of saloons. The perfect synthesis
of high performance and comfort.
The suspension of the BMW
six cylinder saloons is an indication of the fact that exceptional driving quali ti es do not
exclude comfort.
It is a perfect combination of spring
struts at the front and semi-trailing arms
at the rear - one of the most efficient
systems in the world - and thus the
safest.
Due to this ideal balance of springing
and damping, the BMW six cylinder
saloons combine superb handli ng characteristics with a new level of driving
comfort and refinement.
The situation and position of each
separate wheel react independently to
each other in accordance with a predetermined programme, in any driving
situation. During cornering, and
changing lanes at high speed on straight
roads, the inclining outer wheel keeps
to the most suitable angle for the speed.
The suspension thereby ensures strong
lateral adhesion against the bend and
permits high cu rve acceleration .
The result: best possible road adhesion
under all forms of direction change.
With a BMW six cylinder saloon,
the quality of the road surface does not
affect driving safety. The individual
wheels adapt independently of each
other to the road surface and absorb
shocks from potholes, ruts and cross
grooves with unparallelled smoothness.
It does not matter therefore whether
a BMW travels over small or large
uneven surfaces, whether the driver is
on his own or the vehicle is completely
occupied, or whether he is driving
slowly or quickly.
One of the exceptional performance characteristics of
the large BMWs is the
specially-designed
dual-circuit braki ng

system, which utilises in every situation

the outstanding adhesion qualities of
the suspension. This system combines
disc brakes on all four wheels (on the
3.3 L, the 3.0 Si, and the 3.0 S models
with interior ventilation), a brake reinforcer and a pressure limiter which
regulates the braking force on the rear
wheels. Overbraking is avoided. The
hand brake acts on drum brakes, which
are additional to the disc brakes on the
rear wheels.

The whole equals more than the sum of the parts

It is not merely the amount
of techn ically brilliant plusses
that distinguishes a BMW from
other cars. The incomparable
individuality of a BMW depends

rather on its unique basic conception: the harmonious combination and delicate balance
of a 'sum' of progressive design
and construction details to

Quick and easy gear-changing through short

and precise lever movement. Full-synchromesh gearbox with well balanced ratios.

provide an outstanding 'whole'.

With a perfect relationsh ip
between power output, size,
comfort and driving safety.

Even at high speeds, steering is absolutely

precise as a result of a positive and smooth
steering system, thus permitting fast but
fatigue-free driving.

The body design of the BMW six cylinder

saloons meets the highest demands of
construction. The vehicle body is rigid on
all sides. The passenger compartment is
welded to the floor section to form a
distortion-free unit. There is no movement
in th e coachwork which can affect the
precise interaction of the suspension and
its eometry.

BM 's power-unit: The perfect combination
of high output, flexibility, smooth running
and economy.
The exceptional power development of every
BMW engine is the result not only of long
years of technical/practical groundwork,
but also of the remarkably extensive accumulation of experience and know-how from
the development of rac ing engines. A degree
of refinement in construction is necessary quite apart from the high standards of basic

construction absolutely essential for racing

engines - to enable them to withstand
highest stresses whilst producing more than
double their standard power output.

This considerable technical knowledge is

BMW suspension is recognised as one of

the most efficient systems in the world.
Its superiority derives from the coordination
of constructional skill and the most careful
balance. In this way, a BMW combines
last-driving characteristics and outstanding
road-holding with driving comfort and
sophistication. The result of many years
and much work in car research, together
with exceptional experience of racing
activity.

The effective dual twin-circuit braking system

ensures that lull braking can be maintained.
even ii one circuit should fail where it
matters most - on the front wheels.

The illustration shows the BMW 3.0 Si with

the optional light alloy wheels and 2-point
automatic rear seat belts.

The BMW six cylinder power unit.

Power means safety.
The degree of safety and the
comfort bui lt into the six cyl inder BMW's clearly result in
weight. High power output is
therefore necessary to render
this weight easy to manoeuvre
and to hand le.
A BMW 3.0 S accelerates from
0 to 100 km/h in 8.4 secs.
It can also achieve this speed
with a family, fully loaded boot
and full tank in a comfortable
14 secs. Thus both for itself and
other road users it eases 'high
stress' situations such as overtaking , in congested traffic,
on inclines, and when carefully
manoeuvering.
For this reason the performance capacity of a BMW is
not an end in itself, but the prerequisite for mobility- and
that means safety.
The BMW six cylinder power units
are probably the most highly developed
and well-proven in the world. They are
characterised by progressive transmission of power, turbine-like smoothness,
and total flexibility - mechanical
features which make it easy for the
driver to adapt to road conditions, to
react more logically and quickly, and to
remain reasonable and co-operative
in traffic situations.
The triple hemispherical swirl-action
combustion chamber is an example
of BMW's superior engine design.
Through the best possible induction
and swirling of the petrol-air mixture,
an intensive and consistently even combustion is attained. The result: excellent

exchange of gases, quick ignition,

better power output at low as well as
high speeds, lower fuel consumption
and less waste matter in the exhaust.
The manifolds on the BMW engine
are so designed that outstanding induction and exhaust is attained. In accordance with the cross-flow principle,
inlet and outlet ports lie opposite each
other. The inclined overhead valves in
V-formation, controlled by overhead
camshafts, are positioned at the most
favourable angle to the gas flow.
The seven bearing crankshaft with
twelve counterweights ensures extremely smooth running, like that of a
turbine, by means of accurate balancing
and a vibration damper.
This ideal harmony of power output
and smooth running , synonymous with
BMW, is offered in various versions in
accordance with individual requirements: from the 2.5 litre unit of the
BMW 2500 up to the 3.3 litre unit of
the BMW 3.3 L.
The responsiveness and fuel consumption of the 3 litre power unit in the
BMW 3.0 Si has been still further improved by means of the Bosch-Jetronic
fuel injection unit with an electronic
metering device which determines the
correct fuel mixture for all operating
conditions.

Reaction instead of Resignation:

In critical circumstances a BMW does not 'give up' but 'gives in':
and even then systematically.

The body of a car should be

a "passenger compartment"
and a "safety-cell ". It must be
constructed so that impact
energy in the case of accidents
is absorbed by the deformable
zones inthe frontandrearand
so that the "safety-cell " passenger compartment remains
unaffected.
To this end research , testing
and improvement towards perfection has been carried out in
BMW body experiments. By
means of extensive collision
tests , the exact relationship
between all types of impact and
their effect on the car's safety
systems has been assessed.
The aim of this is not just top
quality and efficient safetyconscious construction, but to
produce an ideal comb ination
of separate installations which
progressively complement
one another in operation.
The resu lt of this painstaking
research is a car with safety
systems that are re levant in all
types of accident: the BMW
life-conservation system.
With BMW safety means a systematic

The BMW six cylinder saloons have
deformable and energy-absorbing front

and rear sections. The passenger

compartment is somersault-protected
due to a roll-over bar and specially
constructed front and rear roof supports
(1,2,3).
The bonnet is so constructed that
if struck it deflects, absorbing impact
energy yet not damaging the windscreen. A specially-constructed transmission tunnel and rigid bulkhead
ensure that in case of frontal impact,
the engine and transmission are deflected away from the passenger
compartment.
In collisions the doors remain closed
due to safety locks and can be
re-opened (4, 5, 6).
The telescopic, collapsible safety
steering-column and the steering linkage
lie under the front axle, thus outside
the collapsible area (7). The steering
wheel with a large padded central boss,
together with the deformable instrument
panel, absorbs impact energy.
All interior equipment is designed
to absorb energy. Even the grab handles and mirrors are flexibly mounted
and deformable.
The fuel tank is placed in a protective zone (8). The front windscreen
is in laminated glass (optional on the
BMW 2500 and 2800) (9) .
To see and to be seen
Outstanding all-round visibility, due
to large window areas with extremely
small blind-spot zones, and suitably
narrow safety support pillars, both front
and rear.
In addition to this, the exterior mirror
is electrically adjustable from inside
(standard on BMW 3.3 L - optional on
other models) and the rear window
can be heated.
Four powerful Halogen headlights
are provided for good night vision.
On the BMW 3.3 La headlight wiper/

washer installation is standard equipment (optional on other models) . To see

and be seen in fog is ensured by
Halogen fog lights (standard on the
3.3 L, otherwise optional) and the fog
tail-lights.

BMW's body research centre is one

of the most modern testing installations
in Europe for experiments and trials
on automobile safety devices. In highly

individual component construction are
analysed for the effect of somersaults.
Rear, lateral and head-on collisions are
examined to establish the results and
the nature of damage sustained. All
these experiments are carried out with
the help of both simulated and real life
tests. The findings obtained form part of
the tangible progress which can be
acquired with each and every BMW.

Sheer Driving Pleasure

The driver of a BMW will
derive pleasure from its
perfect combination of engineering, performance range
and most modern construction
design. Additionally, he will still
experience sheer driving pleasure in this car by being able
to exercise 'sovereign' control
over vital manoeuvres while
driving under any road
conditions.
This driving pleasure should
never be marred. As a result,
this is the concern of trained
technicians in BMW service
stations all over the world.
In these stations, BMW cars
are treated with the same
expertise and the same care as
they received during their
design and manufacture .

Total efficiency in a fine car. In performance,
in handling, in roadholdir-lg, in size, in fuel
mileage.

BMW3.0S
Superb engineering, plus every luxury feature
imaginable. The ultimate in road travel.

Conzept
Today's driving conditions and energy
requirements have revolutionized the idea of
what a fine car should be.
Luxury per se is no longer enough. There
must be far greater efficiency. In every aspect
of the car's function.
It must be capable of brilliant performance.
Yet it must deliver excellent fuel mileage.
It must offer superior roadholding.
At any speed.
It must be comfortable. So as to reduce
fatigue, and to minimize unnecessary driver
movement. Not merely be soft and roomy.
It must achieve higher standards of safety.
In active safety, to avoid accidents. And in
passive safety, to survive them.
In sum, it must be a product of the highest
engineering refinement.
At Germany's famed Bavarian Motor Works.
we have led the way in building cars
based upon this kind of innovative thinking
since 1916.
Now, in producing our latest 3-liter series,
we have reached a new pinnacle.
See these cars. Drive them. When you do, we
think you will agree with many of the world's
automotive experts. who have acclaimed
them not merely good cars, but great ones.

Styling
Above all else. the 3-liter BMW is meant to be
driven. To carry its occupants quickly from
one point to another in comfort and in safety.
And thus the car's styling is a concise expression
of its purpose.

It is low. Which increases stability and

contributes to its roadholding capabilities.
It is not overly long. Which makes for better
handling, and for greater agility in traffic.
And also allows easier parking.
It is spacious. Despite its clean, taut lines,
the BMW provides more interior room than
many far larger cars. And more luggage space
in its ample trunk.
It permits excellent outward visibility. Which
.results from its low beltline and its generous
use of glass. The slope of the hood also
gives the driver an unusually good view of the
road.
In total, the car's appearance says, here is
remarkable efficiency in space engineering.
And at the same time it says, here is power
and speed and readabi lity. Here is the car for
the man who knows and appreciates great
machinery. The man who truly loves to drive.

Powerplant
The new 3-liter BMW has been called the most
sophisticated 6-cylinder engine in the world.

Performance is .outstanding. Turbine-smooth

at any speed. With great reserves at the
driver's command for any situation.
170 horsepower.185 foot-pounds of torque.
0 to 60 mph in 9.4 seconds. Top speed 120 mph.
Triple-hemispherical. swirl-action combustion
chambers permit more complete burning
of the fuel-air mixture. The result is maximal
power output, cleaner emissions, and greater
fuel mileage.
The overhead camshaft is supported by four
bearings, and is driven by a double roller
chain. Inclined overhead valves are arranged
in V formation: Resultant cross-flow con tr ibutes also to more complete combustion.
The crankshaft is supported by seven main
bearings. and is balanced with 12 counterweights for extremely smooth running.
Fuel intake is through two Zenith two-stage
carburetors.
Two transmissions are available: a fullysynchronized. four-speed manual with short
throw stickshift for fast positive changes.
Or a smooth automatic. optional at extra cost.
Superior engine development has been the
hallmark of the Bavarian Motor Works since
its inception over 50 years ago. The new
3-liter series is our finest achievement.

'

Suspension
On the highways of the world, BMW roadholding has become almost legendary.
The reason for this capability lies, of course,
in our suspension system and in its harmony
with the car's engine, drive-train, and chassis.
Developed by BMW, this fully independent
system features spring struts in front with
eccentric displaced coil springs, trailing links,
and hydraulic shock absorbers. The struts
are inclined to the rear.
Axle pivot inclination reduces castor angle.
This increases the negative camber of t he
outer wheel when the car is turning, thus
providing greater lateral stability.
Spring and control-arm shaft are separate.
This makes steering easier, even with wid e
tires. Spring travel is 7.5 inches.
The rear axles are multi-jointed. Suspension is
on semi-trail ing arms. Telescopic shock
absorbers are combined with forward-inclined
spring struts. Spring travel is 7.5 inches.
Both the 3.0 S and Bavaria are equipped with
a torsion bar stabilizer on the front axle.
A limited-slip differential is optional at extra cost
On a mountain road or a superhighway,
roadholding is truly remarkable.

Brakes
A high-performance car must have high
performance brakes. BMW's are of very
advanced design, and are extremely effective.
The brakes on all four wheels are servoassisted discs. The servo increases t he
braking power of the foot 4.3 times.
While most cars today use a simple system
employing one circuit on the front wheels
and one on the rear, this wasn't good enough
for BMW. Instead, we developed a dual twin
circuit brake system.
In the BMW system, the first circuit acts on
all four wheels. If the first circuit should fail,
the second circuit will still provide 75% of the
car's braking power.
To BMW, safety means the ability to stop, as
well as to go.

Safety
.
At the Bavarian Motor Works. no phase of engineering
development has a higher priority than safety.
Ours is a constantly on-going program of innovation,
testing, improvement.

As a result the new 3-liter BMW's are equipped with

a broad range of safety features. both active and passive.

..

By active safety we mean, of course. the ability of

the car to avoid an accident. Among such features are:

1 Engine.
With its brilliant acceleration and great reserves of
power. the BMW 3-liter provides the driver with a
wide safety marg in on which to draw. When he needs
instantaneous response. he has it.

2 Suspension.
Ful ly indepedent system provides remarkabl e roadholding and extreme agility. No other car today is more
sure-footed, especia lly when rapid evasive action
becomes necessary.

3 Steering.
Worm and roller mechanism is quick, positive, and
light to the touch. with exceptionally good road feel.

4 Brakes.
Servo-assisted discs on all four wheels for great
stopping power. Dual twin-circuit system. If the first
circuit fails. 75% of braking ability is retained.

5 Tires.
Radial ply construction, fo.r unsurpassed dependability
and adhesion to any road surfac8. More rugged and
longer-lived.

6 Cockpit design.
Al l controls within easy reach. No unnecessary driver
movement. Instruments are instantly readable. set in
glare-fr.ee black housings.
By passive safety, BMW means those features
which protect the car's occupants when an accident is
unavoidable:

7 Passenger compartment.
Extremely rigid, with specially constructed crossbraces. Doors remain shut in a collision, yet can be
opened afterward. Outside door handles are recessed.
Rear doors have child-proof locks.

8 Crush zones.
Front and rear. Convert collision energy into precalculated deformation of metal. Fuel tank is under the
trunk floor. protected by the spare wheel.
9 Steering equipment.
Located behind the front axle support so that the
steering column cannot penetrate deeply into the car
in case of collision.

10 Safety belts.
Standard. 3-term inal design, w ith automatic reel.
retraction.
11 Headrests.
Standard front and rear in 3.0 S, rear optional in Bavaria.

..

Cockpit
This is where BMW efficiency is most
obvious to the eye. All controls are immediately within reach. All instruments are
instantly readable. To enable the driver to
make the most of his ability. And to make
driving the great pleasure it should be.
You see it in the instruments. The speedometer. The tachometer. Large, round, clear.
In the smaller water temperature and fuel
gauges. In the control lights for oil, headlights,
blinker, tank, and brake. You see it in the
sporty four-spoke steering wheel with its
large, energy-absorbing upholstered safety
cushion.
You see it in the convenience of the control
lever groupings. On the left: directional
signals, headlight dimmer, high beam flasher.
On the right windshield wipers, wiper
speed control, and windshield wash-andwipe activation. Never a moment's distraction. never the need to remove hands from
the wheel.
You see it in the axially adjustable steering
column, which can be adapted to suit any
arm length.
You see it in the way the short-throw stickshift
comes easily to hand.
You know then that this is a car designed to
keep you in control at all times.

Comfort
For all its trim outside dimensions, the 3-liter
BMW offers plenty of interior roominess,
even for six-footers. Styling is extremely light
and clean. Visibility is excellent thanks to the
large windows.
The front seat s are individual buckets.
They are horizontal ly adjustable, and the backs
are ful ly reclini ng.
The driver's seat may also be adjusted to the
precise height desired.
All seats have been orthopedically designed
to minimize fatigue during long trips, as well
as to provide optimum lateral support during
cornering.
The fl oor is covered by strong, thick, loop-pi le
carpeting.
Heat and fresh air are provided by a remarkably efficient twin circuit system. It conducts
fresh air for both air renewal and heating into
the car at the same time. but through separate
passages. When heating is turned off, the
heat ducts can be used as additional fresh-air
intakes.
The separate fresh-air circuit alone can draw
100 quarts of air into the car's interior each
second while used air is expelled through vents
at the rear of the passenger compartment.
Thus. at any temperature, the air inside the
3 -liter BMW is always fresh and clean.
This kind of functional luxury is apparent in
detai ls throughout the car.
For example:
Map pock~ts front and rear.
Heatable rear window.
Illuminated glove compartment.
Extra compartment on driver's side. with
outlet for rechargeable flashlight.
Illuminated ash trays front and rear.
Handgrips above the doors.
Tool kit inside the trunk lid. Deep carpeting
in the capacious trunk.

BMW- sheer driving pleasure

Printed in Western Germany

Our status symbol is under the hood,

not on it
In a ll cando r, the BMW
3.0 Si is not everyman's idea
of an expens ive automobile.
It does not scream
"money" from the top of its
hood.
It is not the w idest or the
longest or the ch romiest.

Nor does its interior

resemble that of a living room.
The BMW 3.0 Si is a luxury
automob il e for those who
truly enjoy driv ing. For those
who apprec iate exceptional
performance and extraord inary engineering.

Perhaps, for those peop le,

it is the on ly luxury automobile -the ultimate driving
machine.

---

The BMW 3.0 Si. For the man

whose love of performance is at least equal
to his love of opulence
Any car costing many
thousands of dollars ought to
provide a full compliment of
life's little luxuries.
Leather seats, power
windows, stereo, and the like.
And, most assuredly, all
expens ive cars do.
Few, however, offer the
one thing that, when all is said
and done, makes a really
expensive ca r really worth
the money: exceptional performance.
Few cars are built to perform in such a way that driving
becomes an end - not merely
a means of getting from one
place to another.
The BMW 3.0 Si, on the
other hand, is.
If a single generalization
coul d be made to describe
every BMW, it would be that
each is a unique comb ination
not only of the refined luxury
one expects in a costly
European car, but also of the
extraordinary performance
you'd expect only in a sports
car.
In an age of mass-produced
status symbols, marketing
wizardry and styling breakthroughs, the engineers at the
Bavarian Motor Works, in
Munich, Germany, concentrate on building the best
driving machines it is physically and technically possible
to build.
StY.ling, intelligent not
ostentatious.
For more than a halfcentury, we at the Bavarian
Motor Works have remained
impervious to the passing
fads and fleeting fashions
indulged in by so many auto-

motive manufacturers.
You will find nothing on a
BMW th at does not in some
way enhance its performance, safety, or comfort.
You will find no inwardsloping doors and windows to
diminsh passenger space.

manship of the BMW 3.0 Si.

You'll notice an unusual
quality of finish and fit,
seldom equaled at any price.
No gaps between body
panels. No misaligned moldings. No flaws in the finish.
Each BMW goes through

You will find no futuristic

fender shapes to interfere
with vi sibility.
No stylized hoods and no
opera windows.
On the contra ry , the shape
of the 3.0 Si is classic,
uncomplicated , and aerodynamically sound. Its belt
line is low, to bring down the
center of gravity and provide
an astonishing amount of
visibility in every direction.
"The engineers at the
Bavarian Motor Works did not
invent the phrase 'form
follows function'," say the
editors of Motor Trend magazine. "But among all the
world's automakers, BMW is
perhaps the foremost practitioner of the philosophy."
Construction, meticulous.
Look carefully at the work-

what most manufacturers

would, no doubt, consider an
unnecessaril y arduous process of preparation.
First, priming, cavity sealing and undercoating. Then,
painting, hand examination,
sanding and repainting. Not
just once, mind you, but as
many times as is necessary
to arrive at a perfect end
result.
In all , it takes BMW craftsmen as long as three full days
to complete a single car.

The cockpit, functional not frivolous

When you sit in the cockpit of the
BMW 3.0 Si for the first time, you will
notice that it bears scant resemblance
to that of the average luxury sedan.
No plastic replica of Edwardian
crests ore other unnecessary ornamentation.
The cockpit of the 3.0 Si is the end
result of extensive biomechanical
research and testing.

Everything has been carefully

planned to facilitate effortless, total
control at all times - even under the
most difficult driving conditions.
All controls are within easy reach
and precisely where you'd want them.
All instruments are instantly readable and grouped in the manner of an
airplane cockpit, to preclude the need
for unnecessary movement or a lapse
in concentration.

Variable nozzle for heater and fresh air.

central fuse box. lrip odometer and ou tl et

The interior,
engineered not decorated
When you drive a BMW,
you will experience a curious
sensation of being part of the
car itself. A unique feel ing of
total and complete control.
If your realm of experience
has been confined to conventional luxury sedans, this
feeli ng will be new to you.
But, be assured, you are
not imagin ing it. It is, in fact,
one of the things BMW is most
famous for.
Part of the
explanation for
this phenomenon
lies in the
interior of the
car itself.
While the
interior of the
average car 1s
decorated by
stylists, the
interior of the
BMW is designed by engineers.
Basic to that
design is the
anatomical
reality that no
two people are
made in precisely the same
way.
And that for
the sake of safe,
controlled
operation , the
automobile
,
must be made
to adjust to the
human being instead

of the other way around.

In the BMW 3.0 Si , careful
study has been made of the
interaction between seat
location, visual position,
steering wheel , pedals and
contro ls.
Its supple leather seats
have an orthoped ically
molded shape that provides
firm lateral support in tight,
high-speed curves.

Both individual seats are

adjustable forward and back
and have ful ly variable back
supports. Additionally, the
driver's seat adjusts up and
down.
The steering wheel is axially
adjustable to compensate fo r
variations in arm length.
Al l instruments and all controls are perfectly and precisely positioned.

In terms of passenger

equally impressive feat of
engineering.
While on the outside it is
dramatically smaller than

on the inside it can only be
described as expansive.
Even in the rear one enjoys

Efficient power, unmistakably BMW

Quite recently, Road &
Track magazine, in a most
unusual tribute,cal led th e
BMW powerplantthe ''most
sophisticated in-line six in the
wo rl d".
To BMW enthusiasts,
praise such as t his is taken
more or less in stride.
If the Bavarian Motor Works
is known for anything, it is
superb, innovative engineering.
Engineering that somehow
never fails to combine the
seemingly incompatible:
performance and economy.
In fact, the BMW 3.0 Si is an
end result of voluminous amounts
of technical and physical research
- countless hours on the great
racing circuits of the world - and
over a half-century of experience at
building some of the world's finest
powerplants.
And no better example of this
priceless cache of eng ineering
intelligence exists than the heart of
the 3.0 Si: its six-cyl inder, threeliter, fuel-injected, triple-hemispheric combustion eng ine.
The efficient Bosch electrically
controlled fuel-injection system operating independently of the
actual air intake - determines the
precise amount of fuel to be
injected.

Then, swirl-action combustion

chambers fan the fuel-air mixture,
concentrating it around the spark
plugs to create even and complete
combustion.
So complete and so efficient
that the engine not only produces
a very impressive 176 SAE net
horsepower from a mere 182 cubic
inches of displacement, but produces it with exceed ingly low
emissions and exceed ingly high
fuel economy.
Perhaps some automakers
assume that, if you're willing and
able to buy a car costing many
thousands of dollars, you're also
willing to shoulder the cost of an
engine that gets nine to ten miles
to the gallon of gas.
We, at the Bavarian Motor
Works, do not.
Even with automatic transmission, the 3.0 Si will provide the sort
of fuel economy that few domestic
luxury sedans could approach,
much less equal.
Further mechanical refinements
include an overhead camshaft,
cross-flow head with splayed
valves, seven main bearings, and
twelve crankshaft counter balance
weights - all of which combine to
give the BMW 3.0 Si a capacity for
smooth, reliable, turbine-like
performance that's totally BMW.
And totally unlike any sixcylinder car you've ever owned or
driven.

The suspension, remarkably agile

If the engine is the heart of
an automobile, then the suspension system is its consciene.
In truth, the chassis is the
very essence of a safe automobile.
It must be capab le of with standing speeds higherthan
the rated speed of the automobile.
It must have sufficient
reserve and agili ty to hand le
evasive maneuvers, poor
road surfaces, or panic
braking.
In short, a well-designed,
well-constructed chass is is a
technical - but very real form of life insurance.
The suspension of the
BMW3.0Si is general ly
acknowledged to be one of
the finest ever bu iIt. A carefully synchronized, extensively researched masterpiece of engineering.

Road holding,_QQtimum.
If you've become accustomed to the leaning and
swaying one experiences in
the average car, you'll find the
legendary road-holding
capabilities of the BMW more
than a bit reassuring.
The suspension is fully
independent on all four

wheels. (McPherson struts

and coil springs in front,
sem itra iling arms and coil
springs in back.)

a high transverse acceleration.

The brakingystem,
unmatched .

And th is, comb ined with a

mu lti-jointed rear axle, allows
each wheel to adapt itself
instantly to every driving and
road condition w ith uncanny
resiliency and smoothness.
For the enthusiast, here is
a technical description of
what actually happens while
negotiating a curve or while
changing lanes at high
speed: situation as we ll as
position of each individual
wheel will adjust itself independently and in accordance
with a predesigned suspension program. The outer
wheel will adopt a certain
camber in tune with the car's
speed while traversing the
curve. In this manner, the
chassis transmits lateral
guidance forces of a high
magnitude, braces itself
against the curve and permits

Each year, BMW receives

no small amount of praise
from the world's automobile
magazines for its unfailing
abi lity to come to a rapid stop
in an arrow-straight line even from speeds as high as
60 mi les per hour-time after
time after time.
The BMW 3.0 Si has a dual
twin-circuit, disc-braking
system that will provide adequate braking power- actually above the legally prescribed limit- even if one of
the two systems should fail.

Safety, more than brute strength

It is doubtful that there is a
car made that's made stronger than a BMW.
A steel safety cell that
comp letely surrounds the
passenger compa rtment and
computer determined "crush
zones" all contribute to reducing injury to a minimum,
in the event of an accident.
Yet there is another kind of
safety, equally important,
called " active safety".
Simply, this refers to a car's
ability to avoid accidents, not
merely survive them.
And this is where the extraordinary performance and
hand Ii ng characteristics of
the BMW 3.0 Si come into
play.
The BMW life saving
system.
The BMW 3.0 Si has contro ll ed -deformation, energyabsorbing front and rear sections. (1) The passenger compartment is protected against
roll -over deformation by

means of an integrated roll

bar and unique front and rear
roof reinforcement. (2, 3)
The hood has been designed to buckle outward - in a
predetermined pattern - and
leave the windsh ield intact. (4)
A specially designed card an
tunnel plus a rigid front partition wall prevent the engine
and the gearbox from being
driven back into the passenger compartment upon frontal impact. (5) Safety locks hold
the doors closed even on
f rontal impact yet perm it subsequent opening. (6)
The two section , telescoping safety column of the
steering wheel and the steering gear are positioned behind the front axle - outside
the "buckle zone". (7) The
steering wheel, with its large
impact plate, as well as the
gradual deformation system
of the instrument pane l
(which has no sharp edges),
are designed to absorb
energy and render harmless

Systematic crash testing is continuously conducted to further perfect

the deformation characteristics of "crush zones"

Excellent night vision is provided by twin headlights.

Bumpers with hydraulic dampers are integrated into total design.

The integrated roll bar.

Carefully tested and scientifically designed door reinforcements.

Articulated. telescoping safety steering wheel column and steering

gear are situated in a protected location - outside the "crush zone".

Crucial parts of th e interior have energy-absorbing padding

All instrument panel details are elastic and deformable.

A standard combination of headrests and automatic seat belts, front

any impact energy.

The bumpers are mounted
on sturdy hydraulic shock
absorbers, eliminating the
possibility of damage to the
car in frontal co ll isions of up
to five m il es per hour. (8)
There's safety in v isibility...:.
The BMW 3.0 Si provides
astonishing all-around visibility through generous use of
glass.
Totally unhampered by the
large blind spots and unnecessari ly large roof panels
found in many automobi les.
An additional extra - and
suggested by the manufacturer - is the external rearvision mirror, electrically adjustable from the passenger
compartment.
Four powerful headlights
provide ample vision after
dark.

Have you ever owned

a car you actually
enjoyed driving?
When all is said and done,
rationa lity is not the only reason to buy the BMW 3.0 Si.
Perhaps the editors of .
Motor Trend magazine put 1t
best when they said, " Asa
total engineering, styli~9.
construction, and deta1 l1ng.
design package, the BMW is
unexcelled among all the
world 's automobiles."
" Yet, in the end , it is the
pure, unfiltered pleasure o_f
driving the car that makes it
supreme.
If you 've never o~ned such
a car, perhaps now 1s your
time.

kleinen Gruppe internationaler
Spitzenautomobile selbstverstandliche MaB an Automobi ltechnik, Fahrsicherheit,
Fahrkomfort und Ausstattung.
Er bietet daruber hinaus eine
BMWtypische Ei genheit: Di e

Selbstzweck, sondern Resu ltat
funktionaler Gestaltung ist.
Sie haben eine elegant
gestreckte, dynamische

Glasflachen. Bei aller GroBzugigkeit der Linienfuhrung

sind die groBen BMW kompakt. Und dam it verkehrsgerecht, bewegl ich, wendig,
ubersichtlich. Form und Funktion jed es Karosseriedetail s
ze igen, daB zuerst gedacht
und dann gestaltet wurde.
Und nicht umgekehrt.
Die optische Eleganz der
groBen BMW ist nicht zuletzt
eine Falge der hervorragenden Lackqualitat. Eine Eleganz,
die bei BMW aufgrund sorgfaltiger Detailarbeit beim
Korrosionsschutz von Dauer
ist. Im elektrophoretischen
Tauchbad wird die Karosserie
mit einem korrosionsfesten
Grundierlack uberzogen und
danach mit einer eingebrannten Mehrschicht-Lackierung
versehen. Ein sorgfa ltiger
Unterbodenschutz und die
BMW Hohlraumversiege lung,
die auch den letzten Wi nkel
erre icht. sorgen daruber hinaus

am Komfort bezahlt we rd en
mussen.

innenbeluflele Scheibenbremsen an alien

Gepack und vollem Tank no'ch
in beruhigenden 10,1 s. Er entscharft also fur sich und andere
Verkehrsteilnehmer StreBSituationen, beim Oberholen,
am Berg, beim Einfadeln und
beim Anpassen.
BMW Leistungsfahigkeit ist
deshalb kein Selbstzweck,
sondern die Voraussetzung
fur Beweglichkeit und das
heiBt Sicherheit.

Sovereignty.
A 'perfect' car must possess
that finely-balanced combination of driving characteristics
and driving comfort which
transmits to the driver something of its vitality, its ease of
handling and its reliability.
This leads to that relaxed
'sovereign' feeling of being

able to master all driving and

traffic situations and to use the
intrinsically superior qualities
of one's own car intel ligently
and responsib ly.
The most advanced form of
this 'sovereignty' is expressed
by the BMW six cylinder range
of saloons, cars in that small

group of the top international

class - but cars with those
specific BMW features.
A BMW six cylinder saloon is
thus always the logica l cho ice
for any driver wanting a car
with characteristics that reflect
his own personal qualities of
power, dynamism and vitality .

Obligation and Preference.

There are only a few cars
which, because of their superiority and uniqueness, can be
regarded as possessions worth
striving for by those who are
unusually successfu l. A c lass ic
example of th is is the large BMW
model. It is available in six alternative versions: as the BMW
2500, BMW 3.0 S, BMW 3.0 Si
and in the long wheelbase versions as the BMW 2.8 L, BMW
3.0 Land BMW 3.3 Li. Different
in performance and fittings, yet
unified in the singular nature of
their basic design.
These cars do not only offer
qualities that are synonymous
with top quality cars of international class, such as advanced technology, safety, comfort
and equipment, they offer an
additional advantage: a finely
balanced sum of qualities that
are suitable for everyday use,
togethe r w ith a special vital ity;
in effect, a harmonious combination of high performance,
style and economy.

These cars are the result of

BMW's view that an obligation
to providing relevant qualities
fo r everyday driving requirements should not exc lude a
preference for cars offering
stimulating driving characterist ics. The BMW 6-cylinder
range does comb in e unusual
comfort and distinctive appearance with remarkab le driving
characteristics, and that unmistakable BMW driving 'feel'.
In this way , the driver can
always take advantage of the
former without relinquishing
the latter.
There are cars which people
drive because they can afford
them. People who enjoy driving
afford BMWs.
With BMW design is an in-bu ilt
element.
The incomparable aesthetic
design of the BMW 6-cylinder
models is not an end in itse lf,
but the resu lt of functional
planning. They possess elegant
and dynamic lines and a well

balanced relationship between

the car body and window areas.
Although generously designed,
the BMW 6-cylinder saloons
are made as compact as possible. They are just the right
size for traffic, manageable.
manoeuverable and distinctive.
The design and function of
every detail of the car is evidence that everything was first
planned and then incorporated:
not the reverse.
The visual elegance of the
BMW 6-cylinder saloons is
enhanced by the superior
quality of its paint: an elegance
which is made to last by BMW's
attention to detail in preventing
rust. The body is given an antirust undercoat in an electrophoretic immersion bath, and
then finished with severa l layers
of paint. Careful under-sealing
and BMW's cavity rust proofing
process (reaching into every
corner) thoroughly ensu re the
long life and resale value of all
BMW cars.

Vive la difference:
BMW distinguish the function ally necessary from the truly
exclusive - in size, for example,
and in design. For BMW, distinction is not a function of size
or pretentious detail, and to be
exc lusive necessarily entails
liveliness.
The most striking examp les
of functional exclusiveness are
the larger versions of the large
BMW cars. They combine the
extra space and comfort of a
body 10 cm (4 in) larger and a
new standard of interior specification, with a higher degree of
driving safety and the performance the world has come to
expect from BMW.
Thus the BMW 3.3 Li is a car
that meets the requirements
of the most discriminating
driver. A car which is as much
a joy to drive as to be driven in.
A BMW is an unusual car.
The BMW 3.3 Li is an unusual

The exceptional ease

of operating a BMW's
controls has one
obvious advantage:
exceptional driving
safety.
Effortless, safe control in modern car
desigh is one of the essential prerequisites for driving safety. As a result,

BMW has systematically and deliberately studied, by means of bio-mechanically simulated tests, those safety
measures that can be incorporated into
control systems. An effective routine
has thus been developed ror the driver,
enabling himto control his car with
the minimum of effort, and in this way
direct his undivided attention to traffic
situations. The logical and functional
display of all the car's control systems
minimises any errors in the receipt
and interpretation of information regarding the car's situation.

For BMW, comfort is not an art but a science.

The comfort and sophistication of the large BMW models
are the resu It of carefu I research
and design taking account of
all factors: from the comfortable
seat and springs which are coordinated to the high-quali ty
chass is, and the design of the
seating position and visi bility,
down to the carefull co-ordination of pedals, steering wheel
and operating controls.
The precise, light, steering
keeps you in complete control
even at high speeds and permits fatigue-free , fast driving.
Fro m the BMW 2.8 I
(BMW 2500 optional) th e fittedas-standard, rpm-responsive
power steering ensures easy,
smooth control under all traffi c
co ndit ions, especially at low
speed and when parking. This
new rpm-responsive power
steering provides much improved 'feel' at high speeds and
greater precision of control
under sudden traffic and roadsurface changes (e.g. crosswind) , without reducing power
assistance at low speeds and
when parking.
A further contribution both to
comfort and safety is the
optional automatic transmission (standard on
BMW3.3 Li).
On BMW cars this is
a perfectly integrated
part of the whole
drive system,
founded in

the extremely favourable torque

ratios of t he BMW 6-cylinder
engine, which ensure a high
torque over a wide speed range.
The automatic transmission
acts as a sort of technical cop il ot. relieving the driver w ithout

affecting his freedom of

decision .
A f urther special accessory
is the ventilation system which
provides a particularly
pleasant temperature ba lance:
this is su pp lied for all mode ls.

The new BMW system of seat, visibility, steering

and operating control adjustment.
No two drivers are alike.
On the large BMW models,
therefore , the steering and
pedal position can be tailored
to arm and leg length , and the
seat and visibility to body
dimensions.
For this purpose, th e large
BMW models have axiall y
adjustable steering wheels and
a driver's seat which is individually adjustable in two
dimensions: the seat can be
easily and comfortably adjusted
in floor position, angle and
height. This new system of seat,
steering and operating controls
allows the car to be tailored
exactly to fit its driver.

The large BMW models offer

every driver the best possible
arm position, in relation to the
steering wheel , and the best
visibility, thanks to an optimum
seat height. They also offer the
driver the best possible leg
position in relation to the pedals
to ensure fast actions and reactions. The thighs are properly
supported thanks to the angle
adjustment of the seat area,
which ensures fatigue- and
cramp-free driving. A BMW
makes it easy for its driver to be
a safe driver.

The large BMW models offer

a systematic arrangement of
fittings which make driving not
on ly pleasant but safe. This
ensures that the driver is kept
alert, enabli ng him to react in a
controlled manner, and to
master unaccustomed situations even better.
Heating and ventilation in the
large BMW models cater for
physical well-being unusually
well. The heating is quickly
effective, its temperature infinitely variable. Warm air can be
directed to the footwell and / or
to defrost the windscreen and
side windows. The BMW 3.0 S,
3.0 Si, and the long wheelbase
range have rear heating fitted
as standard.
The venti lation system
ensures that ind ividually contro llable, draught-free fresh air
distribution is provided, with
separate controls for driver and

Suspension of the BMW 6-cylinder

range of saloons. The perfect synthesis
of high performance and comfort.
The suspension of the BMW
6-cylinder saloons is an indication of the fact that exceptional driving qualities do not
exclude comfort.
It is a perfect combination of
spring struts at the front and
semi-trailing arms at the rear one of the most efficient
systems in the world - and thus
the safest.
Due to this ideal balance of
springing and damping, the
BMW 6-cyl inder saloons combine superb handling characteristics with a new level of
driving comfort and refi nement.
The situation and position
of each separate wheel react
independently to each other in
accordance with a predetermined programme, in any drivin g situation. During corne ring ,
and chang ing lanes at high

speed on straight roads, the

inclining outer wheel keeps to
the most suitable angle for the
speed. The suspension thereby
ensures strong lateral adhesion
against the bend and perm its
high curve acceleration.
The resu lt: best possible road
adhesion under all forms of
direction change.
With a BMW 6-cylinder
saloon, the quality of the road
surface does not affect driving
safety. The individual wheels
adapt independently of each
other to the road surface and
absorb shocks from potholes,
ruts and cross grooves with
unparallelled smoothness ..
It does not matter therefore
whether a BMW travels over
small or large uneven surfaces,
whether the driver is on his own
or the vehic le is complete ly
occupied, or whether he is
driving slowly or quickly .

...
The large BMW models have a dual twin circuit brake system which is the complete
equal o f their extremely high outpu t, and
which fully exploits the excellent road adhesion of the chassis in every situation. They
have internally ventilated disc brakes ori all
four wheels (apart from the BMW 2500) ,
a brake servo. and a pressure limiter that
meters braking acti on on the rear wheels.

Overbraking is avoided. The hand brake acts

on additional drum brakes, as well as the
rear wheel disc brakes.
The sophisticated dual twin-circuit brake
system ensures that even if one circuit
should fai l, the full braking effect is still
compl etely maintained where it is most
important - on the front wheels.

The whole is more than the sum of its parts.

It is not only the sheer number of technically brilliant solutions to individual problems
which differentiates a BMW
from all other cars. The unique
quality of a BMW is far more a
product of its underlying design
concept: the harmonious combination and careful co-ordination of a large number of technical refinements to create a
superior whole. A lively, balanced relationship of performance, size, comfort and
safety.
The short, precise shift
movements on the well-graded ,
fully synchromesh four-speed
gearbox make gear changing
fast and easy.
For a good chassis to function perfectly the bodywork
must have the right design . And
BMW bodywork design totally
meets the requirements. The
car body is torsionally rigid, and
the passenger compartment is
welded to the floor assembly,
forming a torsion -resistant
whole. Bodywork movements
that affect the preci se mechanics of the chassis and its
geometry are totally impossible.
BMW engines - the perfect
combination of high performance and flexibility, smooth
running and economy.
The impressive development
of power produced by every
BMW engine is the result of
many years of technical and
practical work, and also of a
great deal of experience in

motor racing. Apart from the

high standards of basic design,
which is absolutely essential

many years of extensive automotive research, combined

with an unusually large amount

for these racing engines, many of racing experience.

overtaking, in congested traffic,
on inclines, and when carefully
manoeuvering.
For th is reason the performance capacity of a BMW is
not an end in itself, but the prerequ isite for mobi lity - and
that means safety.
The BM W 6-cylinder power
units are p robab ly th e most
h ighly developed and well-proven in the world. They are characterised by progressive transmission of power, turbine-li ke

smoothness, and tota l flexibility

- mechanical features which
make it easy for the driver to
adapt to road conditions, to
react more logically and quickly,
and to remain reasonab le and
cooperative in traffi c situations.
This id eal harmony of power
output and smooth running,
synonymous with BMW, is offered in various versions in
accordance with individual
requirements: from the 2.5 litre
unit of the BMW 2500 up to the
3.3 litre unit of the BMW 3.3 Li.

The triple hemispherical swirl-action

combustion chamber is an example of
BMW's superior engine design. Through the
best possible induction and swirling of the
petrol-air mixture, an intensive and consistently even combustion is attained. The
result: excellent exchange of gases, quick
ignition, better power output at low as well
as high speeds, lower fu el consumption
and less waste matter in the exhaust.

The responsiveness and fuel consumption of the 3 litre power units has been still
further improved by means of the
Bosch-L-Jetronic fuel injection unit with an
electronic metering device which determines the correct fuel mixture for all
operating conditions.
The seven bearing crankshaft with twelve
counterweights ensures extremely smooth
running. like that of a turbine, by means
of accurate balancing and a vibration
damper.

Reaction instead of resignation:

In critical circumstances a BMW does not 'give up' but 'gives in' :
and even then systematically.
The body of a car should be
a 'passenger compartment'
and a 'safety-cel l' . It must be
constructed so that impact
energy in the case of accidents
is absorbed by the deformable
zones inthefrontandrearand
so that the 'safety-cell ' passenger compartment remains
unaffected.
To this end research, testing
and improvement towards perfection has been carried out in
BMW body experiments. By
means of extensive co ll ision
tests, the exact relationship
between all types of impact and
their effect on the car's safety
systems has been assessed.
The aim of this is not just top
quality and efficient safetyconscious construction, but to
produce an ideal combination
of separate installations which
progressively complement
one another in operation.
The result of this painstaking
research is a car with safety
systems that are relevant in all
types of accident: the BMW
Iife-conservation system.
With BMW safety means a
SY.Sternatic a12Rroach.
The BMW 6-cylinder saloons
have deformable and energyabsorbi ng front and rear sections. The passenger compartment is somersault-protected
due to ro ll -over bars and specially constructed front and rear
roof supports.

The bonnet is so constructed

that lif strucklit deflects, absorbing impact energy yet not
damaging the windscreen.
A specia ll y-constructed transmission tunnel and rigid bulkhead ensure that in case of
frontal impact, the engine and
transm ission are deflected
away from the passenger compartment.
In coll isions the doors remain
c losed due to safety locks and
can be re-opened.
The telescopic, collapsib le
safety steering-column and the
steering li nkage lie under the
front axle, thus outside the
collapsib le area. The steering .
wheel with a large padded cen tral boss, together with the
deformable instrument panel,
absorbs impact energy,
All interior equipment is
designed to absorb energy.
Even the grab handles and
mirrors are flexibly mounted
and deformable.
The fue l tank is placed in a
protective zone. The front
windscreen is in laminated
glass.
See and be seen.
Large window areas with
minimal blind spots and safely
designed, narrow front and rear
roof pil lars ensure excellent
all-round visib ili ty. In addition,
the wing mirror is electrically
adjustable from inside, and the
rear window is heated. Power-

fu l double Halogen headlights

ensure a good v iew at night.
Headlight wipers / washer are
standard on the BMW 3.3 Li
(available as an optional extra
on other models). The Halogen
fog lights - standard on the
BMW3.3Li, otherwise as optional extras - and the tai l fog
light ensure that you will see
and be seen, even in fog.

. BMW's body re search centre is one

of the most modern testing installations
in Europe for experiments and trials
on automobile safety devices. In highly
specialised and well-equipped testing
units, car construction as a whole and
individual component construction are
analysed for the effect of somersaults.
Rear, lateral and head-on collisions are
examined to establish the results and
the nature of damage sustained. All
these experiments are carried out with
the help of both simulated and real life
tests. The findings obtained form part of
the tangible progress which can be
acquired with each and every BMW.

The bodywork of a BMW is both passenger compartment and safety sell. 1 Controlled, collapsing, impact-absorbing front and rear zones. 2/3 Integral
roll-over bar and specially designed roof and roof pillars prevent the roof from collapsing if the passenger compartment is overturned. 4 The bonnet
buckles in a pre-determined manner, absorbs impact forces and does not damage the windscreen thanks to special securing decives. 5 A joint tunnel

&

and rigid bulkhead area prevent the engine and transmission from penetrating the passenger compartment in a heai:l-on collision. 6 Safety locks on the
doors, at the rear with child-proof locks. 7 Impact forces are absorbed by progressive deformation in the area of the instruments. 8 Protected fuel tank.
9 The laminated windscreen cannot be shattered by a stone and thus prevents any danger of cuts.

Integral roll-over bar ensures safety should the car overturn.

The whole of the interior is padded to absorb impact forces, the.

instruments are flexible and collapsible.
