ABOUT JEE ADVANCED

oint Entrance Examination Advanced (JEE Advanced) is conducted


by seven zonal Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay)
under the guidance of Joint Admission Board (JAB). The performance of a candidate in this examination forms the basis for admission to
various bachelors degree programs in 20 IITs and Indian School of Mines
(ISM), along with other reputed engineering institutes.
This national level engineering entrance exam is the second stage of JEE
and is held only for top 1.5 lakh candidates of JEE Main. A candidate can
attempt this exam a maximum of two times and that too in consecutive
years. JEE Advanced is held in the fourth week of May for which online
registration and filling of application form commence from the months first
week.

JEE ADVANCED ELIGIBILITY Criterion 2- Age Limit (for 2016)


CRITERIA

The candidate should have been born on or after-

October 1, 1991 if belonging to the GEN or OBCNCL category and on or after

candidate, including a foreign national, must


fulfill each and every one of the following five
criteria to appear in JEE Advanced.

October 1, 1986 if belonging to the SC, ST or PwD


category

Criterion 3- Number of Attempts

Criterion 1- Performance in JEE


Main

A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of


two times and that too in consecutive years. Therefore,
JEE Advanced should be either the candidates first
attempt or the second consecutive attempt.

The candidate should be among the top 1,50,000 (all


categories included) in JEE Main. The percentages of
the total number of candidates for various categories
are as follows:

Criterion 4- Appearance in Class


XII (or equivalent) examination (for
2016)

50.5% for GEN (from the common rank list), 27% for
OBC-NCL, 15% for SC and 7.5% for ST. Within each
of these four categories, 3% horizontal reservation is
available for PwD candidates. PwD category includes
Dyslexic candidates also.

The candidate should have appeared for the Class XII


(or equivalent) examination for the first time in all the
subjects in either 2015 or 2016.
Candidates, who appeared for the class XII (or equivalent) examination in 2015 and wish to re-appear for the
same in 2016 (either for improvement or because they
failed in one or more subjects), will have to re-appear
in all the subjects in 2016.

Those, who appeared for the first time in their class


XII (or equivalent) examination in 2014 or earlier, are
not eligible. However, candidates whose class XII (or
equivalent) examination board results for the academic
year 2013-14 were declared after June 2014 are eligible
to appear for JEE Advanced.

Criterion 5- Earlier admission at


IITs/ISM (for 2016)

Important:
l

The candidate should not have taken admission


(irrespective of whether or not he/she continued in
the program) or even accepted admission by paying
admission fee at any of the IITs or ISM in the past; even
candidates whose admission was cancelled are not
eligible. However, candidates who have been admitted
to a preparatory course in any of the IITs in 2015 can
appear for JEE Advanced 2016.

Candidates, who have completed Class XII (or


equivalent) examination outside India or from a
Board not specified above, should produce a
certificate from the Association of Indian Universities
to the effect that the examination they have passed
is equivalent to the Class XII examination.
In case the Class XII examination is not a public
examination, the candidate must have passed
at least one public (Board or Pre-University)
examination earlier.

Examinations considered as
equivalent to class XII

Admissions to IITs/ISM Dhanbad:

1. The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted


by a Central or State Board recognized by the
Association of Indian Universities
2. Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination
conducted by a Board or University recognized by
the Association of Indian Universities
3. Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint
Services Wing of the National Defence Academy
4. Senior Secondary School Examination conducted
by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a
minimum of five subjects
5. Any Public School, Board or University examination
in India or in a foreign country recognized as
equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association
of Indian Universities (AIU)
6. H.S.C. vocational examination
7. A Diploma recognized by the All India Council for
Technical Education or a State Board of Technical
Education of at least 3 years duration
8. General Certificate Education (GCE) examination

One of the criteria for admission to IITs and ISM is that


the candidate should satisfy at least one of these two
criteria:
(1) He/she is within the category-wise top 20 percentile
of successful candidates in his/her respective Class
XII (or equivalent) board examination.
(2) He/she has secured 75% (for GEN or OBC-NCL)
or 70% (SC, ST or PwD) of aggregate marks in the
Class XII (or equivalent) board examination.
The marks scored in the following five subjects will be
considered for calculating the aggregate marks and the
cut-off marks for fulfilling the top 20 percentile criterion:
(1) Physics
(2) Chemistry
(3) Mathematics
(4) A language (if the candidate has taken more than
one language, then the language with the higher
marks will be considered)
(5) Any subject other than the above four (the subject
with the higher marks will be considered)

JEE ADVANCED APPLICATION FORM

EE Advanced Application Form is available


in the first week of May tentatively. Candidates should first register for appearing in JEE
Advanced, which can be done online only. Only
candidates whose scores are equal or above the JEE
Main Cutoff marks specified for JEE Advanced can fill
the Application Form. Also, they must satisfy the specified eligibility criteria before registration. Candidates
can go through application form procedure below to

Procedure:
The online application procedure of JEE Advanced
comprises of following three simple stepsl Filling registration form

Candidates must enter their JEE Main Roll Number,


password and security pin.
They will have to choose a new password for JEE
Advanced.
They shall keep this password safe as this will
have to be used for all the JEE Advanced related
operations.
Even if a candidate did not opt for appearing in JEE
Advanced while registering for JEE Main, he/she
can register for JEE Advanced.

JEE Advanced Application cannot be withdrawn


after registration is completed.
Registration fee is neither refundable nor
transferable.
Registration will be cancelled if, at a later date, it is
found that the candidate does not meet even one
of the specified eligibility criteria.

Note: Any request for change of centre or language of


question paper will not be entertained.

Step 2- Uploading Certificates:

Password must be 8 to 13 Characters long.


It must be a combination of one upper case
alphabet, one lower case alphabet, one numeric
value and one special character like !@#$%^&*-.

Photograph, signature, thumb impression and scanned


certificates of Class X / DOB proof, Class XII (or equivalent) examination, Category, PwD, Scribe Request
Letter and DS certificate as applicable in JPG/JPEG
format must be uploaded by candidates.

For Dubai Exam Centre:

Multi Option Payment System (MOPS) page. As per


convenience, he/she may select any of the available
options like Debit Card/ Credit Card/ Internet Banking.
After successful payment, Registration Details with
Unique Registration Number can be printed.

Candidates, who want to select Dubai as the examination city, are required to pay the registration fee of an
amount of US $ 220 (tentative) via International Debit/
Credit Card issued by Foreign Banks and issued
outside India. Payment in US$ is not allowed through
Debit/Credit Cards issued in India. After successful
payment, the Registration Details with Unique Registration Number can be printed.

By Cash using SBI Branch Option:


The candidate has to click Pay Registration Fee,
then system will automatically redirect to State Bank
Multi Option Payment System (MOPS) page. In case
of cash payment, SBI Branch has to be selected
and system will generate the challan. The candidate
has to take a printout of the system generated challan
and take it to the SBI branch for making cash payment. After payment, candidates are required to visit
this webpage again and download the Registration
Details with Unique Registration Number.

Note: Candidates must preserve this registration


details page till the admissions are completed. Only
those, who complete their registration and application
formalities for JEE Advanced with the fee payment can
download their hall ticket.

EE Advanced Syllabus covers topics of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics that have to
be prepared by candidates appearing for the
entrance exam.

JEE ADVANCED EXAM PATTERN

here will be two question papers, Paper 1 and


Paper 2. Each question paper will consist of
three separate sections viz., Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. However, the exam
pattern is not fixed and is changed every year by the

JEE Advanced Question Papers:

The question papers will consist of objective


type (multiple choice) and numerical answer
type questions designed to test comprehension,
reasoning and analytical ability of candidates.
Incorrect answers to some of the questions will be
awarded negative marks.
The question paper will be in either English or Hindi.
Candidates must exercise the choice of question
paper language while registering for JEE Advanced.
Change of question paper language will not be
entertained after the registration.

The answer sheet of JEE Advanced is a machinereadable ORS.


Candidates will be given a two-page ORS. The two
pages of the ORS will have the same lay-out.
The first page of the ORS is machine readable.
It is designed so as to leave impressions of the
responses on the second page.

They should not separate or disturb the alignment


of the two pages of the ORS at any stage and
under any circumstance.
The answers to all the questions should be
marked on the first page of the ORS by darkening
the appropriate bubble or bubbles (as per the
instructions given in the question paper).
Candidates should use black ball point pen for
darkening the bubbles.
They should apply adequate pressure to ensure
that a proper impression is made on the second
page of the ORS. Other instructions for darkening
the bubbles will be printed on the question paper
and candidates must strictly adhere to these
instructions. The second page of the ORS will be
handed over to them by the invigilator at the end of
the examination.

JEE ADVANCED EXAM CENTRES

he Exam Centres are the selected zone-wise


centres where this national level engineering entrance exam will be conducted. JEE
Advanced will be held in designated cities and
towns in India and in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. All
the exam centres are divided into seven IIT zones- IIT
Bombay Zone, IIT Delhi Zone, IIT Guwahati Zone, IIT
Kanpur Zone, IIT Kharagpur Zone, IIT Madras Zone
and IIT Roorkee Zone. Candidates appearing for the
exam shall choose three cities / towns from a zone of
their choice at the time of filling online application form.

JEE ADVANCED ADMIT CARD

EE Advanced Admit Card


is tentatively available in the
third week of May. This hall
ticket is an identity proof that
has to be furnished by candidates
at the exam hall to invigilator. The
Admission Ticket can be downloaded online only and there is no
provision for any other means of
dispatch. Candidates need to login
first using their registration number
and date of birth for downloading
the admit card.
Candidates,
who
successfully complete registering for JEE
Advanced can download the admit
card from the online registration portal. The admit card
will bear the following details of the candidate:
1. Name
2. Roll number
3. Photograph
4, Signature
5. Date of birth
6. Address for correspondence
7. Category
8. Language of question paper
9. Name & address of the examination centre allotted

Chairman, JEE Advanced of the respective zonal IIT.


A copy of the downloaded hall ticket should be
produced at the time of examination. The original
admit card will be issued to the candidate during
Paper 1 examination. It must be retained safely till
all the formalities of admission are complete.

Important points to be noted


regarding JEE Advanced Admit
Card:

Candidates should carefully examine all entries in


the admit card and in case of any discrepancy,
contact the Chairman, JEE Advanced of the
respective zonal IIT.
In case the admit card is not available for
downloading, candidate should contact the

Candidates must keep in mind that they will be


allowed to write the exam only if they carry valid
Admit Card to the examination hall.
The original admit card will be handed over to them
at the exam hall after verification.
Details as mentioned on the downloaded admit
card shall match with the details in the centre
verification records.

Candidates whose verification is successful will be


issued the original hall ticket, which has to be kept
safe till the admission process is completed. Those
with unsuccessful verification will not be allowed to
write the exam.
Candidates whose verification is in doubt may be
allowed to write the exam solely on the discretion
of invigilator, who may allow it after completing
formalities including taking of thumb impression. No
extra time will be allowed for these candidates for
completion of the formalities.

n 2015, IIT Bombay continued to be the most preferred IIT and admissions to this prestigious institute were
closed at AIR 2637. The last allotted seat continued to be of ISM Dhanbad. Most of the IITs witnessed lower
closing rank as compared to 2014 with four IITs IIT Bombay, IIT Indore, IIT Kanpur and IIT Jodhpur - being
the exception. IIT Mandi was the worst hit with the closing rank for the institute falling by over 1000 ranks. The
institute witnessed a closing rank of 6313 in 2015 as compared to closing rank of 5146 in 2014.
