Yes/No Questions
We answer some questions with 'yes' or 'no'.
Look at these examples.
Do you live here?
Can you speak French?
No, I don't.
Yes, I can.
Are you from New York?
No, I'm not.

Are you English?


Yes, I am.

Questions using the verb 'be' with the answer 'Yes' or 'No'.
In the examples below forms of the verb 'be'* are used in the
present simple tense.
Are you from New Zealand? Is Wellington the capital?
Yes, I am.
Yes, it is.
Is New Zealand hot in July?
No, it isn't. It's cold.

Am I late?
No, you're not.

*In these examples, 'be' is an ordinary verb, not an auxiliary verb.

Present simple tense questions use the auxiliary verb do.
Look at these yes/no examples showing when we use do and does.
Do I feel cold?
Do you feel cold?
Does he feel cold?
Does she feel cold?
Does it feel cold?
Do they feel cold?

Exercise A
Julie is a new student. Roberto introduces Julie to his
friend, Marie. Put the correct form of the verb 'be' (am /
are / is) in the gaps below.
Roberto: Hi, Julie. This is Marie.
Julie: Hi, Marie. 1._____ you a new student?
Marie: Yes, I am. 2._____ you a new student, Julie?
Julie: No, I'm not! I have been at this school for 6
months. 3._____ you French, Marie?
Marie: Well, yes and no. I'm from Tahiti.
