Wed like to express our gratitude to the concerned academic department for introducing Basic
2d Character Modelling module. This module has proven to be of great value, and has definitely
helped us to lay a strong foundation for not only our final year project but also for our
multimedia careers. We are thankful to Mr Rabinath Kulasegaram for sharing his knowledge and
being a guiding light throughout this assignment.
Every lecture and lab session was filled with a new learning experience, and helped us feed our
curiosity from coming up with a character concept art, to drawing it on model sheets,
implementing various types of 3D character modelling techniques, texturing, and rigging. To
summarize, this module helped us to understand the core concepts of 3D design and
development.
We are also grateful to the university for providing us with a lab which has all the vital resources,
and library which contains all the necessary books that were helpful for this particular
assignment.

Daro the Dino is the Prince of Animal Kingdom, named Dino Land. A baby torosaurus is
chosen as the prince of the Dino land, due to its characteristics like vegetarianism, kindness and
peaceful life principles.
Daro is the only son of the king of Dino Land. Hes very kind and is always ready to help people
who are in trouble. He analyses the problems of the citizens of his kingdom every day, and at
nights, he goes on a mission to solve the problems and thus make lives of the citizens of Dino
land, much better.
Daro has magical locket, which contains the wisdom and knowledge gained by his forefathers,
which helps him to tackle difficult situations. For each and every accomplishment he achieves,
he gets a gift from his father, the King. The citizens of the Kingdom thank Daro for his good
work by treating him with yummy meals.
For his accomplishments, Daro is gifted a crown by the citizens of Dino Land, and is known as
Peoples Prince.
The character is designed to fit in an adventure game, where Daro the Dino is supposed to get
through each level by travelling and helping people around. He earns goodie bags, and points by
helping people, based on prioritizing and time management.
Game Scenario: The game starts with a kingdom background- in a morning scene. Daro wakes
up and after getting ready, he goes for a walk in his Kingdom. He has to greet everyone, and
earns points for every kind salutation he gives. On his way, he will come across many people
who are in need of help, like people falling short of food or water, people who go missing,
people suffering with poverty, etc. The locket will help Daro to give hints as to what can be done
to help those people in that situation. After the stroll, Daro waits till its dark, and then starts his
mission to help people. He has to make sure he remembers the path he took, places where help
5
was needed, and how. He earns points, and goodie bags which has magical elements to help him
further in his journey, based his ability to connect the dots, tackle the situations based on the
hints he gets, and is progressed to next level after accomplishing every mission.
4. Target users
4.1. Daro the Dino
The target users are kids, aged 8 to 17 years, who can be taught moral values using this character
in a game (or a movie). Daro is a baby torosaurus, and is designed to attract kids with its cute
features. The following attributes are added to Daro, to make sure it connects well with its target
users:
1. Kid-like look: The fact that it is young, helps to make an impact on the kids, and the good
work he does might help the kids to relate to it.
2. Colors: Daro is designed with vibrant colors, and care is taken that it doesnt look dangerous.
3. Kind-facial design: Daro is designed to look kind, cute and happy, to make a positive impact
on the users and not scare them away.
4. Royal-look: Daro has a crown and a heritage locket, which gives him a royal look, thus
emphasizing his background.
Every one has probably owned and loved a teddy bear at some point in their childhood.
Somehow, it is a source of calmness and warmth to certain people. It also defines as a sense of
security provided to them. The love affair they have with the teddy bear is not an arbitrary trend
whereas for some reasons they have always found their teddy bear to be the most loving. They
cherish the company of their teddy bear and share everything they have during the good time and
bad time. It is a chance for them to unwind and speak to some one when they are alone while the
sensible at their age may not be read and understand by other people. This is why teddy bear are
such an important part of a childs life.

In the other hand, Science is an irreplaceable subject to be study during schooling time.
However, not every student does having the interest in studying science. Some of the students
might find that science is a very boring subject as it major in unique theories that they do not
understand. It may affect their result due to the result of science, which might be pull down their
average of their performance in schooling. That may be become a disaster for he or she.
Therefore, if there is a game application that designed to be major about the science-based
knowledge, that might be a very great opportunity for the student to learn science more easily
and increase their interest in science. Meanwhile, when these two aspects, which is the teddy
bear aspect and science- based game application aspect made a combination in the game
industry, it will be a very mighty creature that benefit to the youngest.
Mateo the Ted is designed for basic Science-based edutainment interactive game. This game is
mostly suitable for the age of 5-19 years old, which is the kid and teenagers.
Kid
Kid, especially toddler and early preschool age have a very nave and adorable mindset that
having a magical thinking. They usually apply traits to teddy bear that it will provide them
comfort and security. They will need something to snuggle and keep them company as a source
of safety and protection. Meanwhile, in the early preschool age, the education industry has
started to teach the basic knowledge of science to the kid whereas it may be a struggle for the kid
to fully learn and understand the lesson of it. So, the science-based edutainment interactive game
with the combination of Mateo the Ted came into the game industry to help up the parents to
educate the children science and the right quality to be a better person.
Teenager
Teenagers are the young people based on the age of 8-17. People in this age are still having an
incomplete sensation to think and learn. There are still overcoming the rebellious period as it
might be brought them to be a low esteem person. Teenagers need a right direction to lead them
to a meaningful life instead of wasting the fire of youth and become a destructive force.
Somehow, some of the parents have no clues to help and lead their teenage children while they
will needs some outsource to lean a hand. In the other hand, teenagers are mostly still studying in
high school. As mentioned in the Target User Background, they will never able to avoid in
9
studying science during high school. Meanwhile, the story of Mateo the Ted and the sciencebased edutainment interactive game will helps the teenagers to kill two birds in one stone.

Character Modelling - Structuring the Face
The crown and collar was designed separately, after developing the face.

Progression was then made, to developing the body. The legs were made again using extruding
technique, and manipulation
Character Modelling- Face and Body
Ears, eyes and nose were then created, followed by the nails and tail.
Now, details were added in the face, followed by attaching the crown and the collar. After one
finishing the entire one side, mirror was applied for the body and face, and the modelling was
thus completed.

After modelling, we assigned texture to Daro. To create a surface that resembles real life you
need to turn to texture mapping. This process is similar to adding decorative paper to a white
box. In 3D, texture mapping is the process of adding graphics to a polygon object. These
graphics can be anything from photographs to original designs. Textures can help age your
object, and give them more appeal and realism. Bump map is used to give it a realistic touch.
UV Wrapping method was used for texturing after adding color to the model. UV mapping is
done, seams are selected.

dimensional representation of the surface mesh, over top of the two-dimensional image to be
used as a texture as it appears in the UV Texture Editor. (Help.autodesk.com) It results in a
correlation between the image and how it appears as a texture when mapped onto the threedimension surface mesh. It is a critical skill to master for accurate and realistic texture on
polygonal surface.
First of foremost, we insert the Unwrap UVW from the Modifier List Panel. Select the Face
under Unwrap UVW and go back to the Mateo the Ted scene to select all the faces that form the
head of it. Every part of the model need to allocate separately. Hold the Ctrl key on the keyboard
while doing the process to be able to select multiple objects at the same time. Once it is done,
roll down the panel at the right side of the software to the Parameter panel and click on Edit. The
Edit UVWs window shall open up and the part that selected shall be in red, which is the initial
UV mapping. Then, access the Modify tab in Edit UVWS window and scroll down to Map
Parameter, then click on Planar and it will change the UV mapping on the Edit UVW window.
Uncheck the Normalize Map option to prevent the UV Map from being scaled to fit the texture
area. Finally, start for the texturing process.

Fur Texture
In the design of Mateo the Ted, our group member has been used the fur texture at the entire part
of Mateo the Ted except the eyes, nose, inner ear and paws at hands and legs. These texture able
to get it in the modifier list under World-Space Modifier, which is the Hair and Fur (WSM). This
Hair and Fur modifier is the heart of the Hair and Fur feature which user able to apply it to any
object that the user want to grow hair from. (Space, 2015) Then, the user able to align the texture
at the Material Parameter while the user scroll downs the Modify Panel. Below is the rate that
used for Mateo the Ted:
Occluded Amb. is to controls the bias of the ambient or diffuse contributions of the illumination
model. A setting of 100.0 renders the hair with flat lighting. A value of 3.98 is lit only by scene
light sources. Default = 10.0. Range= 3.98 to 100.0
Squirrel is on to have a sharper gradation between the roots and tip colors, and more of the tip
color is visible.
28
The Tip Color is the hair color at the tips, which is farthest from the growth object surface
whereas the Root Color is the hair color at the roots, which is closest to the growth object
surface. These both features have been set as black in color

9. Conclusion
To conclude with, wed like to thank Mr Rabinath Kulasegaram for guiding us throughout the
course of this semester. This was one of the most interactive modules weve ever had so far. It
helped us build the base for our multimedia careers by teaching us one of the most important
segment of multimedia development, 3D Modelling.
We started off this assignment with an enthusiasm and thinking its just as easy as thinking of a
character one day and making it the other day. However, we realized the complexity of the
assignment only when we started working on it. With highs and lows, we have managed to make
two characters, one medium poly and one, low. Designing a character was definitely a daunting
task for us, as we had to think of all the aspects of making it, and of course, the third dimension.
This assignment is a sincere effort from both of us as a team, and we definitely look forward to
learn 3D applications in depth and apply the knowledge learnt in this module to make interactive
applications in future.
