ENODE Distributed I/O Controller Operations Manual

Chapter 1
Getting Started
ENODE distributed I/O controller is a monitoring and control system based on the
Windows CE operating system. The controller features a 32-bit processor with built-in
10/100BaseT Ethernet connectivity and a modular IO system. This combination makes
the controller suitable for a wide range of monitoring and control systems.
The built-in 10/100 BaseT network includes a TCP/IP stack that enables applications
running on an ENODE distributed I/O controller system to communicate with Facility Net
software. The controller operates as part of a plant or factory-wide monitoring/control
system.

Figure 1-1 Typical ENODE Distributed I/O Controller System

An ENODE distributed I/O controller system consists of the following components:
A power module
A processor module
Expansion modules, as required to meet the specific needs of the application
Up to six expansion modules may be used. It is recommended that no more than two
Digital Input modules per Processor be used.

IMPORTANT
Once a set of modules has been selected and configured into Facility Net, no hardware changes can be
made to the ENODE. Ensure that the appropriate hardware configuration has been decided on before
integrating with Facility Net.
Also, if a module requires replacement, ensure that the replacement is installed in the same position
relative to the other modules, that is, maintain the original order of the modules.

Installing the DIN Rail

Installing the DIN Rail

The ENODE distributed I/O controller mounts to a 35 mm DIN Rail which may be
attached to a wall or installed inside a box. DIN Rails are available in 7.5 mm and 15 mm
heights.

Figure 2-1 Side View of DIN Rail for 7.5 mm and 15 mm Heights
To attach the DIN rail:
1 Determine the best location for the controller modules.
2 Ensure that the installation will not be exposed to liquid spray, drip, or splash.
3 Using the instructions shipped with the DIN rail, if any, affix the DIN rail to a sturdy

vertical surface in the chosen location.

Installing Controller Modules

Functional information, specifications, and installation information for individual
modules are covered in separate chapters.
To install the controller modules:
1 See Chapter 4, "Processor and Power Module".
2 Depending on which expansion modules you are using,

see Chapter 5, "Analog Input Module"

or see Chapter 6, "Relay Output Module"
or see Chapter 7, "Digital Output Module"
or see Chapter 8, "Digital Input Module".

Chapter 3
Installing a Bench-Mount System
The ENODE distributed I/O controller may be assembled as a stand-alone instrument for
testing and bench applications. Machine screws from the installation kit are used to secure
the modules together. No other special mounting hardware is required.

Connecting Modules Together

Every ENODE distributed I/O controller system has a Processor unit and Power module.
When looking at the front of the modules, expansion modules are added to the right side
of the Processor module.
In addition to the Processor module and the Power module, the controller system requires
at least one of the following expansion modules:
Analog Input
Digital Input
Relay Output
Digital Output
A maximum of six expansion modules may be added to a single Processor module.
To connect the modules together:
1 Connect the power supply to the left of the processor unit using the two supplied #10-

24 3.5-inch Phil FH zinc or SS screws.

NOTE: It is imperative that these screws are installed; they are
important for grounding the system.
2 Using the dowel pin on the new module as a guide, fit the first expansion module to the

right of the Power and Processor module assembly.

3 Ensure that the alignment pin mates with the processor module and that the
communication connector fits firmly into the Processor Modules communication
connector.
NOTE: When the modules are properly aligned, a tab on the back of
one module overlaps a threaded screw receptacle on the
back of the adjoining module.

Page 3-1

Connecting Modules Together

4 Fasten the first expansion module to the Processor module by screwing a 6-32 3/8-

inch machine screw into the threaded fitting on the back of the modules.
5 Continue to fasten the first expansion module to the Processor module by screwing a 632 1/4-inch machine screw into the non-threaded fitting on the bottom (connector
side) of the modules.
NOTE: These screws are important for grounding the system.
6 Add other modules and fasten them together as described in steps 2-5.

Processor Module

Serial Port
A single serial port is used to configure the modules network settings. After
configuration, the system clock is controlled from Facility Net.

Real-time Clock Battery

The processor module contains a 3.0 V lithium battery that powers the real-time Clock
when AC power is disconnected. Battery life is approximately two years when the module
is not powered externally. When the module receives external power, battery life is longer.
The real-time clock is only used during power-up cycles, so the battery has no operational
effect.

DRAM
The processor module can use up to 64 MB of DRAM. The DRAM is industry-standard
5 V, 72 pin EDO or FPM. Adding more memory to the ENODE has no effect.

Compact Flash Memory

The processor module uses standard compact flash memory for non-volatile storage of the
operating system and drivers. The remaining memory can be used by the application for
other non-volatile storage or for data storage.

Reset Controller
A reset controller monitors the 5 V power. If the power drops below 4.4 V the controller
will reboot.

connected to each other with two machine screws.
To install the Power and Processor modules:
1 Attach the Power Supply module to the DIN rail.
a. Hook the modules lower DIN Rail mount retainer to the lower DIN Rail lip.
b. Rotate the module upwards until the retaining spring clips on the unit snap into the

upper DIN Rail lip.

2 Using steps a and b above:
a. Attach the Processor module to the right of the Power supply module.
b. Attach and screw-in the power cable connector.
c. Slide the Processor module on the rail to butt against the Power Supply module.
3 Ensure that the communication connectors on each module mate firmly.
4 Connect the Power and Processor modules using two #10-24 3.5-inch Phil FH zinc
or SS machine screws (provided).
NOTE: These screws are important for grounding the system.

AC Power Cable
The power module requires a standard IEC power connector. A power cord is included
with this module.

Removing Power and Processor Modules from a DIN Rail

Using small screwdrivers or similar tools, simultaneously lift the two retaining springs
attached to the top-back of the module until the module releases from the DIN Rail.

IMPORTANT
When removing a power supply module from a processor module,
remember to unscrew the power cable connector BEFORE pulling the
modules apart.

Configuring Analog Inputs

Configuring Analog Inputs

Each Analog Input channel can be configured for voltage or current input by setting the
internal DIP switches to filter voltage (0) or Amperes (1). The Analog Input Module
conditions the input signals and converts them to a digital value with 12-bit resolution.
NOTE: It is important to record the DIP switch setting before physically setting the
DIP switches. Keep the record of the DIP switch settings! That information
will be necessary when setting the expansion module firmware.

Setting Analog Module DIP Switches

Set the Analog Input Modules DIP switches before installing the module on the DIN rail.
Each Analog Input channel can be configured for voltage or current input by setting the
internal DIP switches to filter 0-Voltage or 1-Ampere. The factory (default) DIP switch
setting is for voltage input.
To access the DIP switches:
1 If the Analog Input Module is connected to a rail and/or other modules detach it.
2 Turn the module so that the white printed circuit board protector is up.
3 Remove the protector and set it aside. The printed circuit board will be visible.
4 Rotate the module so that the three DIP switch sets are on the bottom right. The DIP
switch sets will appear as below:

Configuring Analog Inputs

Voltage Input
The analog input stage consists of a 16 channel multiplexer (MUX), followed by a
programmable gain amplifier (PGA), feeding a 12-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC).
The ADC is isolated and presented to the system bus. The MUX provides 16 single-ended
inputs to the PGA.
To configure a channel for voltage input:
1 Set the appropriate switch to disable the current mode (SW2-1 through SW3-8). See
To access the DIP switches: above, and see Current and Ground Return Resistor
Switch Settings on page 5-5.
2 Set the appropriate switch to disable the input ground return resistor (SW1-1 through
SW1-8). See the table below.

Current Input
Using the DIP switches, sixteen 487 resistors may be switched between the individual
input channels and ground, allowing the module to make current measurements in the 020 mA range.
To configure a channel for 0-20 mA current input:
1 Set the appropriate switch to enable the current mode (SW2-1 through SW3-8). See the
table below. See To access the DIP switches: above, and see Current and Ground
Return Resistor Switch Settings on page 5-5. This configuration requires the channel
to be read as a single-ended input.
2 Set the appropriate switch to disable the ground return (SW1-1 through SW1-8). See
Table 5-1 on page 5-5.

Relay Output Module
In addition to the Power and Processor modules, an ENODE distributed I/O controller
system requires at least one of the following expansion modules:
Analog Input
Digital Input
Relay Output
Digital Output
A maximum of six expansion modules may be added to a single Processor module.
The Relay Output Module is used to relay outputs to control alarm signals. The module
provides 12 channels of single-pole/single-throw, normally-open, relay contacts capable
of switching 2 Amperes at either 250 VAC or 30 VDC.
The Relay Output Module can be installed in any position to the right of the Processor
Module.
NOTE:

It is important to record the DIP switch setting before physically

setting the DIP switches. Keep the record of the DIP switch
settings! That information will be necessary when setting the
expansion module firmware.

Setting Relay Output DIP Switches

DIP switch settings on the Relay Output Module allow it to power up with the relay open
(the default) or power up with the relay in the closed position.
For each Relay Output, the DIP switch is set in one of the following ways:
1 (on) to be Closed at power up
0 (off) to be Open at power up
NOTE: Setting the outputs to be CLOSED at power-up can be problematic
because the unit will open the contacts if power is ever lost.
Therefore, it is better to design a system where OPEN contacts is
the safe configuration.

Setting the IP Addresses

The correct IP addresses enables controller to communicate with Facility Net or
Pharmaceutical Net over your Ethernet network
To set TCP/IP addresses:
1 Navigate to the terminal emulation programs COM Parameters dialog box.

CAUTION
As with any network-capable software, do not attempt to connect the ENODE distributed I/O
controller to a network without your network administrator's cognizance and explicit
permission. The administrator must approve and, in most cases, issue addresses.

2 When you establish communications with the controller, a prompt will appear.
3 At the prompt, use the following commands to set the appropriate network addresses:

sets the IP address for this controller in the form of

nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn. Each three-numeric series is a value of 0255, separated by a period
(.)character. This address is unique to the hardware it serves. A valid IP address would
look like: 010.255.000.099. Non-significant zeros can dropped so that the same address
appears as: 10.255.0.99.

set ip nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn:

sets the network mask address using the notation

nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn. Each three-digit number a value of 0255 separated by a period (.)
character. The mask separates the network address from the host address. This address is
common to all devices on the logical network. Usually the mask will be similar to,
255.255.255.000. Your network administrator will tell you if you need to enter this field.

set mask nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn:

The multicast address must be set if you are using

Facility Net or Pharmaceutical Net. This command sets the multicast address in the
notation nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn. Each number is a value of 0255 separated by a period (.)
character. This address is unique to the hardware it serves. An example of a valid multicast
address is: 224.100.100.001.

set multicast nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn

set gateway nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn The gateway address is used when communicating

across networks. The address is in the notation nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn. Each three-digit series
is a value of 0255 separated by a period (.). Use 000.000.000.000 if no gateway device
is available on the network. An example of a valid gateway is: 010.255.000.060.
4 Enter the Status command and verify that you have entered the correct addresses.
5 Correct the addresses as needed.
6 Enter the write command to save the most recent entries. This command must be
executed or the settings will be lost when the controller is shut down
NOTE: The write command must be executed to save the addresses
in your ENODE distributed I/O controller. It functions like a
save command does in other software programs.
7 Record the address settings for future reference.

Data Queue Commands

The ENODE utilizes a single data buffer for all inputs. The size of the Queue is selectable
between 1 and the maximum shown in the Status message. Digital inputs and Analog
inputs can be individually enabled or disabled. Figure 9-7 on page 9-8 shows the
applicable Data Queue commands.

NOTE: When you have completed the installation for the ENODE
distributed I/O controller, you can integrate it with Facility Net.
See Chapter 10, Facility Net-Controller System Integration.

Page 9-10

ENODE Distributed I/O Controller Operations Manual

Chapter 10
Facility Net-Controller System Integration
Facility Net must be configured for each of the expansion modules in the ENODE
distributed I/O controller installation.
The controller communicates with Facility Net via a standard UTP Ethernet cable. Your
Information Systems manager, Network Administrator, or other appropriate computer
support personnel may be able to assist you in procuring a cable or fabricating a customlength cable.
When the controller is connected to power and connected to your network, Facility Net
or Pharmaceutical Net will find the ENODE distributed I/O controller and all its module
components.
Each dialog box tab (Analog Inputs, Digital Inputs, Digital Outputs, or Relay Outputs)
is displayed only if the corresponding Input/Output device is part of the controllers
physical configuration.
To see context sensitive help, click anywhere on any of the dialog box pages.

General Assumptions
The DIP switches on the expansion modules have been installed, and the switch settings
were recorded.
All expansion modules have been wired and physically installed.
The Processor Modules communications settings have been configured.
The expansion modules firmware settings have been configured.
The user is familiar with Facility Net.

Page 10-1

Accessing the NetAnalog Configuration

Accessing the NetAnalog Configuration

These directions assume the following:
A computer loaded with Facility Net is available.
The computer is connected to the Ethernet network supporting the ENODE distributed
I/O controller.
The user is familiar with Facility Net software.
NOTE: Refer to your Facility Net/Pharmaceutical Net Users Manual
for information about monitoring and collecting data.

To access the NetAnalog Configuration dialog box:

1 From Facility Net, click on Configure > Instruments and click the Add button to add
a Network Device.
2 Do one of the following:
Click the Poll Multicast button.
OR
Type the IP address in the Poll Sensor field, and click Poll Sensor. This will locate
the instrument.
3 The NetAnalog Configuration dialog box will open.

IMPORTANT
Once a set of modules has been selected and configured into Facility Net, no hardware
changes can be made to the ENODE. Ensure that the appropriate hardware configuration
has been decided on before integrating with Facility Net.
Also, if a module requires replacement, ensure that the replacement is installed in the same
position relative to the other modules, that is, maintain the original order of the modules.

corresponds to connection 1, and so on.

Analog Inputs Dialog Box Fields

Configures the channels Input to Facility Net. A blank Name field is not
configured into Facility Net and will be disabled in the device. Deleting an existing Name
entry, disables configuration to Facility Net. All names must be unique.

Name

The Name is used for most data identification purposes. Meaningful names make data
configuration, association, and processing easier.
This required field qualifies the analog input value reported for this entry. The units
should match the range of values being calculated after the appropriate Scale/Offset or
Minimum/Maximum values are applied.

Units

These entries adjust the raw values reported by the module.

See Scale and Offset Explained on page 10-4 for more information about setting an
appropriate range for an analog input value.

Maximum and Minimum

ENODE Distributed I/O Controller Operations Manual

Page 10-3

Configuring Analog Inputs

Once configured, Minimum and Maximum are converted to Scale and Offset values as
follows:
Scale = (Maximum - Minimum)/(RawDataMaximum - RawDataMinimum)
Offset = Minimum - (Scale * RawDataMinimum).
Scale and Offset are applied to the raw data as follows:
NewData = (Scale * RawData) + Offset.
Show Scale and Offset Columns When filled, this check box causes the Analog Input

dialog box to display the Scale and Offset columns.

Scale and Offset The Scale and Offset settings. See Scale and Offset Explained on

page 10-4 for more information relating to setting the appropriate range for an analog
input value. Scale and Offset settings are applied to the raw data as follows:
NewData = (Scale * RawData) + Offset

Scale and Offset Explained

NOTE: When using the default Scale of 1.00 and Offset of 0.00, the
corresponding Minimum and Maximum values represent the
devices raw output. This is important information when directly
applying scale and offset values. The Analog Input Channel will
always supply a raw value of 0 4095 corresponding to the
selected 010 volt or 0-20 mA input range.

Example 1:

4-20 mA temperature sensor

Calculated Offset/Scale: 25 : 0.030525

N/A

Because the sensors output electrical range is 4-20 mA and the input electrical range of
the device is 0-20 mA, the physical range must be extended by 4/16 or 1/4 on the low end
of the range. One warning or alarm can be used to detect any value coming from this range
to indicate that the sensor is no longer connected or is no longer functional.

Because the sensors output electrical range is 05 Volts, and the input electrical range of
the device is 010 Volts, the physical range must be doubled. This effectively halves the
resolution of the configured device.

Glossary of Analog Input Terms

Represents the possible range of data transmitted from the supported
interface device. This is normally the resolution of the device. For the ENODE distributed
I/O controller, this is 0 4095.

Raw Data Range:

Input Electrical Range: Depends on the hardware input mode setting of the supported

interface device. This could be 010 Volts or 020 mA, for example.
Output Electrical Range: Depends on the hardware output mode setting of the selected

sensor. This could be 05 Volts or 420 mA, for example.

The sensors physical range. It is the calibrated range of the sensor in
the physical units of the parameter it is measuring.

corresponds to connection 1, and so on.
Debounce: The minimum duration that a digital signal must exist before it will be

reported. A properly set debounce prevents unwanted or erroneous trigger updates. The
shortest (and default) debounce duration is one second.
NOTE: For any digital level to be reported, that level must be present for the
entire debounce time.
Trigger Mode: The Trigger Mode defines the conditions under which digital input data

is generated. The possibilities are:

Both Edges:
Generate data on any transition
Rising Edge:

Page 10-6

Generate data only on low to high transition

Configuring Digital Inputs

Falling Edge:
Data Report:

Generate data only on high to low transition

The Data Report selection allows the user to invert the digital input for

ease of use.
For example, there might be a situation when the input data needs to be generated on a
falling transition but be reported as a value of one.
Invert Input: The input can be effectively inverted prior to being processed in

Facility Net.
