INFORMATION SECURITY PLANNING
INSTRUCTIONS
This project requires that students work with a virtual Domain Controller installation of
Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard 64-bit.

ENABLE VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY IN THE SYSTEM BIOS


Ensure that the Virtualization Technology is enabled in your system BIOS. You can use the
following source as a reference to enable the system virtualization:

ORACLE VM VIRTUALBOX
Download and install the applicable package of Oracle VM VirtualBox
(http://www.virtualbox.org) based on the platform which you are utilizing.
DOWNLOAD THE MICROSOFT WINDOWS SERVER 2012 VIRTUAL SERVER
Download the Virtual Server from the following location:
https://share.liberty.edu/#/Information_Assurance_Cognate/.

You should authenticate to the site using your Liberty University credentials. Select the
Information_Assurance_Cognate folder and then click on the
CSIS341_VM_DC01.zip file to download it.
Once downloaded, extract the .zip file and ensure you note where it is extracted to.

ADD THE VIRTUAL SERVER TO THE VIRTUALBOX APPLICATION


Select Machine from the application menu, and select Add
Browse to the location where the extracted .zip file is located.
Select the DC01.vbox file and click Open
Select the DC01 Server in the left panel of the Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager and
click the Start button at the top of the screen

INSTALL WINDOWS SERVER UPDATE SERVICES

CONFIGURE A GROUP POLICY OBJECT (GPO) TO FORCE WINDOWS CLIENTS TO


RETRIEVE WINDOWS UPDATES FROM THE WINDOWS SERVER UPDATE SERVICES
(WSUS) SERVER
Perform the steps outlined in the following video in order to create and configure a Group
Policy Object (GPO) in order to force Windows Clients to retrieve Windows Updates
from the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) Server:

VALIDATION
In a Microsoft Word document, paste the following screenshots and validation results
from your virtual server and upload them to Blackboard:
