2 Fundamental Research and Applied Research

2.2.1 Fundamental Research
Fundamental research is a scientific research which is aimed to discover new
theory that results in improved understanding of general knowledge and world
phenomenon.
Fundamental research usually focuses in basic science (pure science). Basic
science explains about the most basic objects, forces, and phenomenons in nature,
relationships between them, and laws governing them.
Researchers who do fundamental research usually are motivated by driving
curiosity about unknown phenomenons. Fundamental research provides variety of
knowledge and information as an answer to many important practical problems, but it
may not give a specific answer and cant be applied directly as a solution for those
problems.
2.2.2 Applied Research
Applied research is a scientific research which is aimed to apply scientific
knowledge from fundamental sciences in physical environment. Applied research
usually uses empirical methods with evidence-based information, and is used to find
solutions for many practical problems in worlds environment. Applied research can

be used to interpret problems to make them researchable in order to initiate many

possible solutions.
2.2.3 Differences
There are several differences between fundamental research and applied research:
1. Differences in criteria to judge the success or failure of the research
Fundamental research can be acknowledged as successful if the
researchers can discover new knowledge and phenomenon which before labeled
as unknown. Applied research is successful if the contribution of this research in
order to give solutions to specific important practical problems can be recognized.
2. The researcherss freedom
In fundamental research, the researcher has more freedom in playing with
their imagination and creativity, whereas in applied research the problem has been
defined and the researchers have to look for best possible solutions to solve this
problem.
Fundamental research and applied research cant be separated because each of
them have their purpose. Fundamental research helps us understanding nature and its
law. Greater understanding of our environtment can make the application of that
knowledge becomes easier. All of that results in possible solution for many practical
problem, thats where applied research can be of use.
