Hamilton approves 'coach' contract

for superintendent search process
BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR

The Hamilton School Board

approved a contract Jan. 5
with an adviser to serve as a
"coach" to assist in the search
for a new superintendent.
The board approved an
agreement
with
James
Rickabaugh Clarity Consulting
for $9,000. According to information from the district,
Rickabaugh will serve as a
"coach for the board of education during each phase of the
superintendent search process
including planning the search,
developing candidate profile,
posting the position, establishing the process for accepting
and reviewing applications,
planning interviews, conducting interviews, analyzing candidates, identifying finalists and
final search activities."
Current
Superintendent
Kathleen Cooke announced in
the fall that she will be retiring
at the end of the school year.

During board discussion,

Cooke said Rickabaugh was recommended by the administrative team because he has experience as a superintendent
search consultant and knows
the district well, since he has
been involved with the district
strategic planning activities.
"The hope was it would be
more personal than having
someone come in who doesn't
know us and doesn't know the
district as well," Cooke said.
Cooke said the district will
work with Rickabaugh on the
draft search calendar to move
forward. She noted the position
has already been posted.
Board
member
Brian
Schneider asked what the board
will be doing and what will be
done independent of the board
by Rickabaugh.
Board
member
Gerald
Schmitz said Rickabaugh "will
help us walk through the
process gradually, make sure we
don't miss anything. He is very

knowledgeable of a lot of people in the greater midwest area

that can also bring in more people in that might be interested
in the position."
Schmitz said "there will be a
lot of paperwork" involved and
Rickabaugh will help the board
cut through it while keeping
the board on task.
Cooke added that the board
will identify characteristics
desired for a new superintendent, will create the profile and
questions, conduct the interviews, evaluate the candidates
and make the decisions. It will
be Rickabaugh's role "to help
facilitate those things, but you
are (making) the decision."
After the contract was
approved, the board and
Rickabaugh discussed the
supertintendent search logistics.
"Thank you for allowing me
to part of what's really an
important task, maybe the
most important task you as a

Bud Walsh is retiring.

After 49 years in the jewelry business, it is time to turn the keys over to a new generation.
Bud has been active in the community for all these
years, and has come to know so many of you by name.
From class rings to engagement rings and so many milestones in local families, Bud has enjoyed the privilege of
being a part of so many of these events through the generations.
Shawn Walsh, Bud's eldest son has worked by his side
in the jewelry business, watching the trends and industry
change. During all that time their dedication to serving the
community has not changed. Whether helping a client
choose the right gift, or creating something entirely custom, Bud's commitment to value has never wavered. Bud
has been active in Rotary and has been recognized nationally as an Outstanding Young Man in Business.
"Although I have enjoyed these years working in a
career I love, it is time for me to take a step in a new direction. As I enter my fiftieth year in the jewelry business, It's
time for me to spend more time with my wife Mary Pat.
We look forward to doing some traveling and spending
more time with our grandchildren and great-grandchildren. But don't be surprised to see me in the store from
time to time, because my heart is still in the business that
has been so much a part of me for all these years."
"In celebration of my retirement we will be offering
large discounts on all in-stock merchandise. We have
many beautiful pieces of jewelry on-hand for yourself or
that special someone in your life."

ustomize your ceremony

to give it a unique touch

Steeped in tradition, weddings

have featured many of the same components for centuries. Those about to
tie the knot may feel somewhat limited in their ability to shape their weddings into unique celebrations of their
relationships and love for one another.
Although it may not seem like there
are many opportunities to put your
own stamp on the wedding, there are
plenty of ways to do just that.
When looking to personalize your
wedding ceremony, determine if there
might be anything blocking you from
doing so. For example, if yours will be
a religious ceremony, there may be
certain rites that need to be followed.
Secular ceremonies may offer more
opportunities to customize.
Vows: Vows are one of the easiest
ways to put a personal touch on your
wedding. You can select the words you
want to exchange during the ceremony as well as any readings during the
service. Work with your officiant to
narrow down particular phrasing or
sentiments that fit with your vision of
the wedding and relationship.
Participants: Wedding party
members fulfill certain roles during
the ceremony, but they are not limited to those tasks alone. Consider asking wedding party members or other

friends or family members to take on

specialized roles in the wedding. They
may be able to do certain readings,
escort guests to their seats, light candles, or sing and participate in other
ways.
Musical interludes: Choose music
that connects with your personalities
as a couple rather than selecting standard songs merely because they are
the easier route. Work with the organist or other musicians and request that
they perform or play musical pieces
that you enjoy.
Candle lighting: Many couples
like to incorporate candle-lighting
components to their ceremonies.
Lighting unity candles blends two
families together into one in a symbolic way. Other couples choose different traditions, such as mixing two different-colored sands in a new vessel,
to represent the joining of two lives
together. You can consider these types
of additions for your wedding ceremony or come up with your own unique
tradition.
Impart a special touch to a wedding ceremony in any number of ways.
Doing so will help set this special day
apart in the minds of guests and make
it even more memorable to look back
on as a couple.

Invitations are a vital component

of wedding planning. In addition to
informing guests about the details of
the ceremony and reception, wedding
invitations convey the tone and style
of the day.
While there are no rules governing
wedding invitations, there are some
ways for couples to ensure they stay
on schedule when mailing invitations.
Order invitations early. Couples
can start to consider their invitation
options once the wedding date and
venue have been chosen. The wedding
stationery industry has changed a lot
over the years. Couples can now order
invitations from local retailers, use
online printers, or design and print
their own invitations from home.
Invitations should be worded carefully and proofed several times before
printing, so expect the process to
take a couple of weeks from start to
finish. Plan for this time so you will
have the invitations ready for mailing
roughly three months before your
wedding day. Always remember to
order extra invitations so you have
spares in case you make a mistake or
make last-minute additions to your
guest list.
Get organized before mailing.
Start preparing invitations about a
month before you plan to ship them,
as this gives you ample time to write

envelopes so you do not have to write

them all on the same day. Keep the
guest list handy and double-check the
spelling of names and the addresses.
Traditional
etiquette
suggests
addresses should be handwritten, but
computer-produced calligraphy on
envelopes is now just as acceptable.
Avoid printed labels. Be sure to have
the complete invitation weighed at
the post office so you will know
exactly how much postage is required.
Purchase stamps for both the invitation and the response cards.
Coordinate mailing time and
RSVP deadlines. Mail invitations
roughly eight weeks before the wedding. This gives guests time to make
room in their schedules and arrange
for travel, if necessary. Set the
response date for three weeks before
the wedding date so guests will have
the time to make a decision and mail
back the response. Many caterers
require a final head count one week
before the wedding, so make sure
your RSVP date is at least two weeks
before the big day so you can account
for late responders.
Don't let responses linger. Check
off who is coming and who cannot
make it as you receive each response.
This way you'll know just how many
responses are still outstanding and
you can follow up if necessary.

'Coach' contract for superintendent search process approved

his role is supportive and involves carrying out directives from the board. As
an example, Rickabaugh said the board
may want to do recruitment. If a board
member did that, he said that could
send a message one candidate would get
more consideration that others, whereas he could do that task since he isn't in
a position to make a decision.
He said a "coach" position involves
the district being out in front of the

process. In terms of process, applications will come to the district office. He

said the search calendar is "tight" and
noted the district is ahead of most
searches from school districts.
"You are going to be ahead of most
searches so presumably the people who
might be interested in making a change
for next year will not have already made
a choice to go somewhere else,"
Rickabaugh said.
Rickabaugh said activities in the

and focus groups. He said he will bring
a "synthesis" from the survey and focus
groups for the board to review, which
will identify the highest characteristics
people are interested in for the next
superintendent.
"The criteria is important in that it
be from you," he said.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Bulldogs stop Germantown

BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR

Germantown couldn't escape with a last second win against a North Shore Conference opponent.
The Warhawks 77-conference game winning
streak was snapped by Cedarburg Jan. 8, as John
Diener converted two free throws with 1.2 seconds
left to give the Bulldogs 63-62 win. The loss
dropped Germantown's record to 4-1 in conference
and 7-3 overall -- with those three losses coming
in the last three games.
"We did have a lot of chances, a lot of them
came on the offensive end. What we needed to do
was get more stops than we did on the defensive
end," Germantown Coach Mark Adams said afterward.
It marked the first time Germantown had lost
three games in a season since the 2009-10 season.
The game was close for the entire first half, as
the teams stayed within three points of each
other. Consecutive three point baskets by Max
Keefe gave Germantown a 32-25 lead with 49 seconds remaining but Cedarburg scored the next
four points before halftime.
The teams continued to stay close for the
entire second half. A three-point basket by Diener
gave the Bulldogs a 59-56 lead with 41 seconds
remaining. But Germantown's Juwan McCloud
answered with a three-point basket at the other
end of court a few seconds later. Two free throws
by Diener gave Germatnown a 61-59 lead with
23.4 seconds remaining, but McCloud answered
with a three-point basket that gave Germantown
a 62-61 lead with 10 seconds left, setting the
stage for the final seconds of the game.
Adams said being involved in the game was a
"gut check."
"It ends up not turning out the way you wanted and you get in the locker room and you tell
them not only was the end of that game a gut

check but how you respond is going to be the

same way. That's pretty much our message just
now," Adams said.
West Allis Central halts Falls comeback
The Menomonee Falls boys basketball team
caught up with West Allis Central Jan. 12 but
couldn't take the lead, as the Bulldogs converted
several free throws down the stretch to win 50-43.
Central held a 21-17 halftime lead.
Menomonee Falls rallied and tied the score on a
basket by Nick Gile at the 10:27 mark of the second half. Central answered by scoring the next
two baskets but Menomonee Falls closed the gap,
as a laypup by Jalen Dixon tied the score at 32-32
at the 8:11 mark. Jared Welsch gave Central lead
with a basket at the other end of the court but
Jaden Champion converted two free throws for
Menomonee Falls at the 7:55 mark to tie the score
at 34-34.
A three point basket by Central's Deveron
Hierrezuelo put the Bulldogs back in the lead.
Following a basket by Jerin Frey of Menomonee
Falls at the 5:18 mark, West Allis Central scored
six consecutive points. The Bulldogs then converted four free throws in the last two minutes to
secure the victory.
Frey led all scorers with 15 points. Afterward,
Menomonee Falls was tied for fifth in the Greater
Metro Conference with a 2-3 conference record
while having an 8-4 overall mark.
Menomonee Falls beat West Allis Central Jan.
8. 60-41. Justin Gruber and Matt Henningsen led
Menomonee Falls with 17 points each.
Hamilton results
Hamilton defeated Brookfield East Jan. 8, 6151. Hamilton's Jake Hartung led all scorers with
27 points. Afterward, Hamilton, was tied for second place in the Greater Metro Conference with a
3-1 conference record while having a 9-2 overall
mark.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Warhawks top Cedarburg

The Germantown girls basketball team beat
Cedarburg Jan. 8, 64-52. Germantown's Kenzie
Schmitz led all scorers with 20 points. Afterward,
Germantown was second in the North Shore
Conference with a 5-1 record while having an 9-3
overall mark.
At the start of last week, Germantown was
ranked eighth in the Division I state coaches poll.
Hamilton beat Brookfield East Jan. 8. 65-50.
The Chargers held a 20-point lead at halftime. Ellie
Sumiec led Hamilton with 17 points.
Afterward, Hamilton was tied with Brookfield
Central for second place in the Greater Metro
Conference with a 4-1 conference record while
Hamilton had a 10-2 overall record. At the start of

last week, Hamilton was ranked ninth in the

Division I state coaches poll.
Menomonee Falls got its first win of the new
year Jan. 12, as the Indians topped West Allis
Central, 50-25. Afterward, Menomonee Falls had a
1-5 Greater Metro record and a 4-8 overall mark.
The Kettle Moraine Lutheran girls basketball
