There are few things I enjoy in life
as much as looking up at the stars.
This weekend I was able to go
down to South Tahoe and camp
out. The weather was great, the
lake was beautiful, and the s'mores
were some of the best that I've
ever had.
I left the school at
around 4 o'clock on
Friday and didn't make
it back until 1 o'clock
on Sunday. I came
back tired, dirty, and
smelling of campfire
smoke. It was
fantastic.
We're entering our 5th
week of school now.
Last week, was first
“test week” of this
semester, and that
continues on into this
week. “Test week” is
the beginning of the
end.
As things continue to
pile up, there is a piece of advice
that is essential to keep you from
burning out. If you find yourself
working too hard and stressed to a
ridiculous extent, remember to
take a moment, an hour, even a
day, and just do something that is
completely unrelated to school.

The Bigger Picture
Since the time of Duke Nukem, parents,
grandparents and the social conservatives in
general have decried the increasing blood,
gore, and violence found in the games that
we've come to know and love. This paper, by
Mitchell Lemon, is a written call to better
judgment on the part of the people that would
use violence as a scape goat for ills that have
plagued humanity.
When someone makes the statement “Violent
video games cause violent behavior in
adolescence,” they will usually validate that
statement by saying it has been proven in many
scientific studies. Why is it though, that they
can never make a direct reference to one study
that has proved that violent games cause
teenagers to act violently? It’s because it hasn’t
been proven. Yes, there are studies that suggest
a link between behavior and the entertainment
that teens choose, but many find them to be
inconclusive.
One such study included children from the ages
of 12 to 18. The results of the study stated that
after playing violent video games that required
them to inflict harm on something, the teens
were more likely to commit acts of violence
months later. In Japan a similar study was
conducted that had similar results.
This study was found in an article that was
trying to make an argument against violent
games, but their logic has several holes. They
said what constitutes an act of violence.
Football can be considered violent. Two friends
playfully wrestling can be considered violent.
Any number of harmless activities could be
considered violent.
Video games have come a long way in the past
couple of decades, and with that advancement
they have became more violent and graphic.
Why is it then that statistics show that reported
violent crimes among teens have been
decreasing since 1990? The conjecture can be
made that studies that show the link between
violence in video games and violence in teens
are biased in a way that is similar to the studies
that cigarette companies do to show that their
product is harmless and non-addictive.
D. George, a writer for the Washington Post,
went and interviewed parents of teenagers. He
inquired about how they regulated their child’s
entertainment. The responses varied from
parents having very few restrictions on what
there child could play, to never allowing their
child to partake in violent entertainment. The
first of these groups noted that their child was a
kind and gentle person who had never harmed
another living thing.
Of course people who are trying to convince
someone that video games effect behavior in

teens would note that Bin Laden’s parents
probably thought he was an angel too. That’s a
completely valid statement. Parents sometimes
have a warped view of their children that isn’t
based in reality. Even if their kids are violent
we shouldn’t blame a symptom of the disease
of aggression as a cause of the underling
problem.
So what is the underling problem of
aggression? People have tried to pin it on more
things then just video games and other
entertainment, i.e. alienation, sexual repression,
sexual freedom, overpopulation, bad genes,
inequality, and original sin. These things have
one thing in common: human needs are not
being met.
Many teens look to video games to fulfill those
needs, whether it is the need to socialize or the
need to not feel powerless. This is not a healthy
behavior in much the same way that drinking
or doing drugs isn’t a healthy way to deal with
one’s problems. Relative to how many teens
play video games, there are few cases where
video games play a bigger role in a teenager’s
life then just entertainment. In even fewer cases
does the teen commit acts of violence. In those
cases where violence and aggression present
themselves, video games are not the controlling
facet of the persons behavior. What is
controlling their behavior is the desire to meet
basic human needs and wants that they don’t
have at the time.
So how is this problem fixed? If by some
magic people were able to keep violent games
out of the hands of adolescence would there no
longer be after school bullying, gang activity,
and school shootings? The answer is simply no.
Teens that are prone to violence would simply
seek out other forms of violent entertainment.
They wouldn’t stop using violence as a means
to get what they want. Parents, teachers, and
heads of government need to stop using video
games as a scapegoat for behaviors that they
very well may have caused.
Books upon books have been written on the
proper way to parent, teach, and govern and
I’m no one to tell those people how to do their
jobs because I simply don’t know. Though
something that we all need to do on occasion is
open our eyes, look at the big picture, and take
some responsibility.

generation specifically that have
been circulating around as an
email chain letter. In case you

someone is telling me a story, all I
can think about is that I can't wait
for them to finish so that I can tell
my own story that's not only
better, but also more directly
involves me.

have fun." Great, no one does.
But why start a fire with flint and
sticks when they've invented the
lighter?
- Have you ever been walking
down the street and realized that
you're going in the complete
opposite direction of where you
are supposed to be going? But
instead of just turning a 180 and
walking back in the direction
from which you came, you have
to first do something like check
your watch or phone or make a
grand arm gesture and mutter to
yourself to ensure that no one in
the surrounding area thinks you're
crazy by randomly switching
directions on the sidewalk.
