Last week we looked at Joseph and Judah and how they played the main
characters in the story of redemption. We did not touch on Potiphars wife,
Joseph in jail and his interpretation of the dreams of the two prisoners. We will
briefly discuss the dreams and what they represent before continuing with this
Portion.

Overview and Recap on Last weeks Portion

The story of Josephs life is the longest continues narrative than any other
narrative found in the Torah. The other topic that YHVH emphasises and that
takes up most pages in the Torah is the part describing and construction of the
Tabernacle. That makes these two topics very significant and important in the
Torah and we should study both topics thoroughly. The first topic is about
Salvation, about Josephs life that is a picture of Messiah and the other topic is
about the Tabernacle, about YHVHs Presence that exist among His people and
these two subjects are describing the themes for the First Coming and Second
Coming of Messiah.
What stands out in the narrative of Josephs life is the number of dreams
mentioned in this life, and they all come in pairs. Firstly, Joseph dreamed about
his future of him becoming a great leader. Then we read about the dreams of
the Cupbearer and the Baker, each having a dream the same night. Lastly,
Pharaoh had two dreams giving the same message of a famine that is coming.
Q Which symbolic object found in our faith comes in pairs as
well?
It is the Menorah, which has an equal number of branches on
each side that represents the principles of balance and truth.
YHVHs pattern for spiritual life is always depicted on the Menorah
pattern. We can fit all three sets of dreams on the Menorah and see that
1

they ate in perfect balance and confirmed the Truth. These pairs of dreams offer
two sides, a left and a right side on each of these three different topics. We
discussed the first two dreams in the previous Portion; one representing the
Physical, and one representing the spiritual aspect of his rule.
Then we read about the pair of dreams the
Cupbearer and the Baker had on the same night.
They were both cast in prison for whatever reason,
and they told their dreams to Joseph. To the
Cupbearer Joseph interpreted that he will be
restored back in the presence of Pharaoh within 3
days. The Baker had a different interpretation, and
Joseph told him he would be hanged on a tree
after 3 days.
Looking at these two dreams you have the wine
and on the one side and on the other side you
have the bread. The person with the wine is elevated, and the person with the
bread is executed.
Q What do these dreams mean?
To explain this better, we have to fast forward to Exodus and look at the
symbolism when the first Passover was celebrated. The wine represents the
blood that was painted on the doorpost of every house so that YHVH could see
it and the people in the house could live. This means that the blood was for
YHVH and we see this in the Cupbearer that was restored in order to present
the whine to Pharaoh (blood to YHVH).
Q What do the Baker and his bread represent?
In the Passover, the lamb was taken into the home of each believer and eaten
before leaving Egypt. The bread of the Baker is linked to the lamb that was
eaten and both represents the Body Of Messiah that was broken for us. The
Baker was hanged on a tree. Can you see the connection? Yshua was hanged
on a tree, and He is the Bread of Life.
The Blood was outside the house for YHVH to see but the lamb
was brought inside the house where the family had clear
instructions on how to prepare and to eat it. The blood was not
for them but the lamb was. Isnt it interesting on how we are
taught the opposite where we thought the blood was for us, no it
is for YHVH to look upon in order to let death pass-us-over. The body of the
lamb was to be eaten to give them strength so that they can leave Egypt (sin
and bondage). The lamb / bread / Word gives you strength to overcome sin and
bondage in your life. His Word is the Truth and the Truth will set you free. (John
8:32)
His Blood lets you pass from death into life, and the Bread
(His Word) brings you from slavery into freedom. Obedience
to His Word brings freedom. There are a lot of Believers in
Messiah that passed from death to life but are still slaves in
Egypt because they dont read the Word or study the Word
2

in order to be fed and made secure. Righteous people are classed as clean
animals (sheep) and a clean animal chew the cud. That means that you have to
take a bite from the Word, chew it and swallow it. Later on during the day, bring
it back into your thoughts to meditate on it so that you can get all the
nourishment and strength from it.
Lastly, Pharaoh had two dreams after Joseph spends 2
years in prison. Nobody could interpret Pharaohs dreams,
and the Cupbearer remembered Joseph. He told Pharaoh
about Joseph, and he was brought out of prison to
interpret Pharaohs dreams. Whenever you read or hear
about a dream, remember it is a code word for spiritual.
Josephs gift was to bring the spiritual and the invisible
into the visual and physical. Just like Yshua Who is the
Word, He became visible in the physical by the Word that
becomes flesh and dwelled among us.
Joseph interpreted Pharaohs dreams, and Pharaoh recognised that Joseph had
the Sprit of YHVH within him that gave him the interpretation as well as the
wisdom to handle and implement the information in a practical way and
appointed him second in charge of his kingdom.
Gen 41:40 You shall be over my house, and according unto your word
shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than you.
Q - Why did Pharaoh outrank Joseph, who is outranking Messiah?
If Joseph is a picture of Messiah then Pharaoh represents someone on earth
that has been given authority to rule over a kingdom or YHVHs creation. This
sounds like Adam and thus means that Pharaoh represents every one of us that
have to rule over what YHVH has entrusted you with in this life. If we substitute
Joseph with Yshua and Pharaoh with yourself the verse will read as follows:
Gen 41:40 Yshua, You shall be over my house, and according unto Your
Word shall all my family be ruled: only in the throne of my life will I be
greater than You.
Yshua is Driving: You have probably heard the story
where your life that is like a car and you should give Yshua
the wheel so that He can drive and you sit in the passenger
seat. Yshua will never take the wheel or take control of your
life. It is the other way round; He is in the passenger seat
navigating, reading you the map and giving you directions.
You sit behind the steering wheel, on the throne of your life
and drive the car. The throne is always thought of a place of
authority, but it is actually a place of decision. One of the
fruits of the Sprit is self-control, meaning that you are in
control and you have to make all the decisions. This is how
we become like Him, created into His Image. By living and
doing life in other words driving your own car, taking His
counsel and directions (Commandments) while we drive, making the right
decisions gets us safely to our destiny.
3

The Holy Spirit told me On the other extreme, you get

people who cannot put their socks on before they received a
word from the Holy Spirit on which ones to choose. If you are
like this then you can tear out the Book of Proverbs because
you do not need YHVHs wisdom to make your own decisions
because He is doing it for you. This is the extreme that ends
up in confusion, and these people are never accountable for
their actions because God told them. Very dangerous! We do
hear from YHVH and receive words from Him regarding what
we need to do, but that does not happen every minute of the
day until that happens, you need His wisdom in order to make
your own decisions based on the guidelines of His Word.
We see from verse 40 that you outrank Yshua in regards to the control of your
life where you have to make all the difficult decisions, but He has the authority
and permission to rule your household through the command of His Word if you
listen to Him. Yshua died for your sin; that is what you place on the Altar, your
sin, not your free will.

Josephs Appointment
Pharaoh put his ring on the hand on Josephs hand; this means that Joseph
never touched Potiphars wife. He dressed him fine linen because Joseph never
uncovered Potiphars wife. He gave Joseph a gold chain to put around his neck
because Joseph never turned his gaze at Potiphars wife.
Hebrew Study Tip
Every Hebrew Word has supporting meanings when it is broken up into
smaller parts making words as well. All these smaller words supports
the meaning of the larger word that will give us more insight and
wisdom regarding its overall meaning.
After Joseph was appointed as the second in charge of the Kingdom, they made
him ride in a chariot and declared Avrech over him. Avrech

JXA@ Aleph-

Bet-Resh-Kaf is a fascinating word that has many meanings when you divide it
up to make smaller words.

A@. spells father, then the second and the third letter
is Bet-Resh or bar XA that means son. The last two letters Resh-Kaf JX
The first two Aleph-Bet

spells Rech that is the root word for mercy (rechem), that also means womb. If

XA@ it spells avar that

means to soar and mighty one. The last 3 letters JXA spells baruch that
we take the first three letters Aleph-Bet-Resh

means blessed and to kneel.

This word Avrech contains six spiritual insights into Yshua and Who He is,
lets look at each one of them. By the way, the number 6 is the number of man
and that implies that Yshua became a man so that He can live with us.
1. Father

A@ Av. How can Yshua be our father? We find in Scripture

in Isa 9:6 that it reveals Yshua as; Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father and Prince of Peace.
Why is Yshua described as our father, surely he is the Son and not the
Father? It says in John 14:8 that if you have seen Yshua, you have seen
the Father because He and His Father is One. This means that Yshua is
the Son of God but reveals the Father to us because of His Oneness with
the Father.
2. Son

XA Bar. This one is easy, we all know Yshua as being the son

of God as prophetically depicted by Abraham (Father) and Isaac (Son).

The meaning of the two letters explains a bit more of Who the Son is as
well as what His function is. Bet means house and Resh means
Head or Leader. Yshua is appointed as Head or Leader of His House,
and His House is better known as His Temple that is revealed in the Berit
Chadashah (NT) as His Body that is made up of Believers. This is
confirmed in Col 1:18 that Yshua is the head of the Body. This is exactly
what Bar means from a Hebraic perspective.

JX Rech also means womans womb Feminine side of

3. Mercy -

mercy as a mother towards her children. When YHVH made Adam He

dwelled with Him in the Garden. Then YHVH made a woman out of Adam
so that he would not be alone. Why was Adam alone, surely he was
dwelling with YHVH in the Garden, Was YHVH too small of not enough?
No, on the contrary, YHVH was too big, too much for Adam and YHVH
had to give Adam someone he could relate to. This is why Yshua was
given to us because we can better relate to Yshua, (YHVH in a physical
form) so that we can dwell with Him. As we have seen in one of the
attributes of Yshua from the word avrech is rech that means womb
and mercy that refers to a mothers caring love. This is the chavah or
life-giving attribute of the helper YHVH sent Adam and that is the
attribute of mercy that YHVH gave us in the form of Yshua.
4. Mighty One

XA@

Avar This word in found in a future Torah

Portion where Joseph blesses Ephraim and Manasseh referring to

Ephraim as the mighty one of Jacob. Again we see in Isa 9:6 the
attributes of Yshua as the Mighty God / Elohim. This word consists of the
combination of the two words Av (Father) and Bar (Son). Avar has
another meaning namely feather that is the combination of the Father
and the Son through their Oneness. What does that mean? The feather is
connected to wings and is found in Ps 91 where we sit under the wings
of the Almighty, in the shadow of His protection. Yshua is described here
as the Almighty or Mighty One. The Feather is also linked to His Torah,
His Word that gives us covering and protection.

5. To Bless

JXA Baruch To bless means to kneel down and is an

indication of serving and submitting. If Yshua is the One Who blesses,

who does He serve or submit to? We all have the idea that we should
bless and serve Yshua, but have you ever thought of Him blessing and
serving you. Think of the event where He washed the Disciples feet
teaching them the principle to bless and help one another, just like He
bless and serve us.
6. To kneel

JXA@

Avrech We saw masculine attributes in the

Father, and Son aspects of Yshua, then we saw His female merciful
aspects, nurturing new believers as His children. Then we unveiled Him
as the Mighty One with all His Godly aspects. Not only that, but He is also
the Servant Who came to bless and serve us unto death; Messiah ben
Joseph. He is also our King, the One you should kneel before; Massiach
Ben David. All of these attributes in this one word revealing the Messiah
through Joseph.

Joseph looked like and Egyptian, Spoke like and

Egyptian and Walked like an Egyptian.
Joseph we called Zaphenath-paneah and given
a Gentile Bride, Asenath that means 'gift of the
sun' or 'gift of the sun-god'. The meaning of this
Egyptian name remains unclear, and the certainty
of its meaning has eluded scholars since the time
of the Septuagint and rabbinic tradition.
Q What does Zaphenath-paneah mean?
Though it is often said that it is uncertain exactly
what this Egyptian name means, in fact there is
general agreement as to many of the components of this name. For example,
the some think the name means, revealer of secrets. More correctly, R. David
Kimchi and Ibn Ezra (ca. 13th century) observe that Zaphenath-paneah is
really an Egyptian name. Some suggest that the name Zaphenath-paneah is a
Hebrew transcription of an Egyptian name meaning the god speaks and he
lives. Professor Kenneth Kitchen, points out that Zaphenath-paneah was
originally Zat-en-aph, for in ancient Egyptian was pronounced Djed(u)en-ef,
meaning he who is called. The second part of the name, Paneah, may be
derived from the Egyptian word, aneah ankh or ankhu, meaning is
alive. Therefore, Zaphenath paaneah means, he who is called Anakh. or
He that is called and is alive.
Yshua was the One Who was called to fulfil a certain purpose and the fact that
He is referred to as alive implies that He must have been dead. This means
that Joseph was called the One who is alive, the one who was thought to be
dead. This fits in prophetically with Yshuas purpose as the called One or
Messiah Who died and rose again and to bring salvation because of His death,
just like Joseph did.

Q - Have you ever thought of what the deeper meaning behind Joseph
becoming an Egyptian could mean?
We all know that Yshua was a Hebrew and came from the tribe of Judah that
made Him a Jew. Joseph was a Hebrew but was sold as a slave and became
an Egyptian.
Q Did Yshua follow the same pattern and became an Egyptian with the
name Jesus?
We as Christian believers in Messiah found Yshua in the Church with a Greek
name we see the same with Joseph, found in Egypt with an Egyptian name.
Q - Does this mean that the name of Jesus is pagan?
No, the name Jesus is the same as the Egyptian name for Joseph and depicts
the culture that was aimed at reaching. Josephs Egyptian name means the one
who is called alive and the name Jesus has the same connotation. YHVH
sent Joseph, a Hebrew to become Egyptian to save the world and YHVH sends
Yshua to become the Greek Jesus to adopt a Western Appearance within a
Western Culture in order to reach those outside of Israel. This does not mean
that Jesus is a pagan god that the majority of Christianity serve, it is Yshua with
Egyptian makeup on. As we have learned from the previous two Torah
Portions, YHVH hides Himself, and so did Yshua.
This does not mean that we as Christians will stay
Christian having a Greek Western Culture. We
see later on in the time of Moses that YHVHs
people are led out of Egypt, went to Sinai to
embrace the Commandments and the Torah so
that they can get Egypt out of their system and
culture becoming Hebrews, just like their father,
Abraham. We live in the time where many
Christians discover their Hebrew roots and start to
wash off their Egyptian makeup, removing their
Egyptian clothing, embracing the Hebrew Culture through following Torah. This
is what Paul meant by washing with the water of the Word in order to wash the
Egyptian or Western- Greek culture from YHVHs people in order to cross
over to become Hebrews just like our father, Abraham.

The Four Tests

Ch 42:7-8 Joseph saw his brothers, but
he acted like a stranger to them and
spoke harshly. He recognised them, but
they did not recognise him.
Why is he doing this? He puts them in
jail for 3 days. What is going on.
What we see here are 4 tests. The
prison, the portions, the cup and the

1. The Prison - He takes 10 brothers and put them in prison for 3 days. He
accused them of being spies v21. The brothers were talking to one
another, and they admitted guilt for what they have done to Joseph. The
first test was to see of there was regret to what they have done. J could
understand them, but they could not understand him. He brought them to
a place of repentance the first step that leads to Salvation. The 10
brothers also prophetically point to the 10 lost tribes that went into exile.
2. The Silver Cup - Why was Benjamins bag chosen? Benjamin and
Joseph came from the same mother, Rachael, Jacobs beloved wife. She
took the household gods of Laban and hid them in her saddlebags. Jacob
said that the one with the idols would die and she did. Joseph put the cup
in B bag, why. They are accused of stealing Josephs cup to do
divination, use for occult purposes the brothers said the one that you
finds the cup in will be your slave forever. When they found it in
Benjamins bag they could have said that Benjamin is just like his mother,
stealing occult objects. They grieved and was willing to share in his guilty
and passed the test.
3. Jealousy - Joseph and Benjamin had the same mother, Rachael. 43:44
Benjamin portion was 5 times as much as the rest. They were not jealous
anymore and passed the test.
4. The hostage Why is Simion taken prisoner and not Ruben? (Will be
discussed in next week's portion)
Q What can we learn from these four tests?
Personal Application: We should realise and see the Restoration of
Relationships between Joseph and his brothers and in this sense Joseph
represents the Christians, that are like Egyptians, embedded in a
Western culture and the brothers who are all Hebrew or Jewish. At the
reconciliation table, there were no throwing of stones, saying things like JC
is a pagan god and Golden Calf worship. No, the Brothers repented to
what they have done to Joseph and so must our Jewish culture brothers
repent of accusing the Christians of being pagan dong golden calf worship
following a pagan god. (this is the extreme case but has happened in
Messianic fellowships). There will be no unity when this happens, and no
new people will come in to leave Egypt in order to embrace the Hebrew
Culture. Saying that, our Christian brothers should not accuse our Jewishlike brothers of being legalistic having religious spirits. This did not happen
at the table where Joseph reconciled with his brothers, they all wept and
repented of what they have done, and they all looked inward to what
each one did wrong and stopped finding faults with other people who are
different to them.
Caution: When you try to find something wrong with your brother or sister, it is a
sign of your own spiritual insecurity where you will feel more righteous and set
apart when you compare yourself with others. Compare and measure yourself
against the Scripture and look inwards to find what is wrong with you and stop
looking around you so see who has a religious spirit or who is pagan. If you do
that then there will be the restoration of relationships, and there will be unity
under the authority of Yshua our Messiah and His Torah.

7 Years Prosperity 7 Years Famine

This happened right before 7 years of plenty and then 7 years of famine. During
the 7 years of famine Josephs brothers came to him what does this mean
prophetically.
