A Brief
Comparison
A formal assessment is a formal
way to measure how much a
student has learned during the
lesson. Formal assessments have a
standardized method to administer
the test. A formal assessment can
be a diagnostic test or a test given
in the beginning of the year to see
where the students are struggling.
Another diagnostic test may be
given in the middle of the year to
see the growth of the students.
Examples of formal assessments
are exams and diagnostic tests.
Informal assessments are content
and performance driven
assessments. Running assessments
and progress monitoring are
examples of informal assessments
as they measure how a student is
progressing. While formal
assessments are used to determine
the level of knowledge a student
has, informal assessments are used
