concentrated in North America and Europe, which together comprise 96% of sales.
The production of organic foods in Asia, Latin America and Africa is largely exportdriven. Similarly, in many African countries, organic exports have been growing
at an average of 30-50% per annum and the number of smallholders active in
these markets has been increasing. Most interestingly, the domestic and regional
demand for organic products is growing, thus stimulating further opportunities
for smallholder organic farmers to engage in market oriented farming.
Despite the availability of market for organic products in the European Union
and beyond, organic farming still faces a number of challenges. This is attributed
to several factors including minimal demand for organic products locally and
regionally, limited government infrastructural support, high costs of third party
certification, low levels of knowledge and poor information dissemination (UNEPUNCTAD, 2010). More challenges include; inadequate institutional capacity,
insufficient coordination and networking among stakeholders, inadequate
awareness and information on EOA practices, limited research that focuses on
organic agriculture, poor linkages between industry and research institutions and
the inadequate financial resources to execute EOA strategies. The absence of
enabling national policies is identified as the biggest obstacle hindering African
governments to develop sustainable, resilient, and productive farming systems.
The EOA continental initiative (www.eoa-africa.org) holds a significant promise
for increasing the productivity of Africas smallholder farmers, with consequent
positive impacts on food security. The initiative has been implemented in Africa
since 2012 and currently four (4) countries in Eastern Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya,
Uganda, and Tanzania) and four (4) in West Africa (Benin, Mali, Nigeria, and
Senegal). The EOA Initiative is aligned to the AU-Department of Rural Economy and
Agriculture (DREA) agenda, the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development
Plan (CAADP) Results framework, the Malabo declaration and Agenda 2063.
In Uganda, the EOA initiative is being implemented by a consortium of stakeholder
institutions, with NOGAMU as the Country Lead Organization (CLO) and other
implementing partners being; Uganda Martyrs University, Makerere university and
PELUM Uganda.
The EOA directory is a product of the Networking and partnership pillar led by
PELUM Uganda and in collaboration with NOGAMU. Other Networking and
Partnership pillar committee members (Makerere University, Uganda Martyrs
University, RUCID, St. Jude, Caritas MADDO, AFIRD and EADEN) have also actively
participated in the development of the Directory. This directory profiles various
stakeholders in the EOA sector in Uganda. It provides a strong basis for networking
and further development of the sector.
