and establishing relationship for the purpose of enabling people to work most
efficiently together in accomplishing objective.
Organization should function effectively so that it can produce quality goods and
services at reasonable cost without compromising on profit making and
satisfying their diverse stakeholders. The members of the organization must
behave in certain ways so that the organization achieves its goal.

INDUSTRY PROFILE
2.1 General Introduction
Institute of Management Studies & Research
India ranks second in the world based on the number of foundry units present
(4550 units) - After China and fourth in terms of total production (7.8 million
Tones) (42ndof World Casting Production 2007). Apart from the registered
4550 units there are several unregistered units, which according to various
sources range approximately from 1500 to 5000 units. As per the IREDACII
Report 2004, there are around 10,000 foundry units present in India including
registered and unregistered units. Considering that 4550 units are registered, the
total number of units unregistered is around 5450 units. As per estimation of
experts of the foundry sector, there are around 1500 unregistered foundry units
that are scattered across the country. This discrepancy in unregistered units is
mainly due to the fact that the 5450 units included all kinds of micro and small
units engaged in castings. Whereas the 1500 units data incorporates only those
foundry units that are engaged in grey iron casting and use conventional cupola
and excludes those units that are too micro in nature and use crucible for melting
of metals. Also several foundry units had closed due to non compliance with the
pollution standard set by the government for example Howrah, Agra and nearby
areas. The foundry produces a wide variety of castings such as manhole covers,
pipe and pipe fittings, sanitary items, tube well body, metric weights, automobile
components, railway parts, electric motor, fan body etc. 90% of the castings
produced are from the SSI sector. Most of these units are situated in clusters,
with cluster size ranging from 30-500 units. The break-up of production of
different varieties of castings is as follows:
of metal weapons and instruments instead of stone. The first was the copper
age .then come the Iron Age after few centuries. Then come the alloy of copper
and tin. These were observed in all the upcoming civilization like Egyptian,
Aryan, Babylonian civilization. Even the gold and silver instruments were casted
and used in those days. Metals art in India goes back to antiquity. The earliest
bronzes have been found at Mohanjadoro and Harappa casting of Metals
particularly bronze for producing objects and artistic and utilitarian values are
made in seen in Sindhu civilization. They use crude and refined copper, low and
high tin bronze and copper sonic alloy for casting. Casting is a vital component
of more modern machine and transportation vehicles. The need for casting has
become more important with growth of industrial societies.
Cast metal parts are used for more than 90% of an automobile engine and for
more than 50% of the total weight of a tractor.
The oldest casting in existence today is believed to be a frog, cast in copper. The
frogs complexity indicates that in was preceded by other simpler casting efforts.
Things went show back then came around in the 16 th century, but man used
earths ores 4500 years prior to this.
The Chinese got the nod iron casting in brass 1000 BC. India made steel in
about 500 B. C. civilization in general was casting brass by then,(brass=copper
zinc), which was many centuries before the Christian era. All along this path all
the techniques for CASTING AND MOULDING PROGRESSES were being
discovered and recorded in to history.
foundries in the small, medium, and large-scale sectors. Approximately 90% are
in the small scale. India exports annually above Rs. 700 crores worth of castings
to countries worth of castings to countries like USA, U.K., Canada, Germany
etc.
This foundry has grown in volume over several decades of is poised to grown
further in future. One of the peculiar feature of this industry is that total
production is contributed by a number of medium and large scale in its from the
original sector and thousands of small scale units from the unorganized sector.
An individual foundry existing now can produce right from 20tpm to 1000tpm
with a set of about Rs .20 lakhs to Rs 100 crores. One could just imagine the vast
difference in the size between the units of the same industry in terms of
investments and outputs. This draw a wide line between the units in all respects
through both belongs to the same industry. The product
range of these
industries covers ordinary low grade casting to highly integrated higher grade ,
castings with vast different in terms of technology methods , pricing etc.,this
gives a good beverages to the buyer to producer casting as their convenient cost
and quality from both the sources.
The export of casting from India amounted to one percent of the world
requirement. In the near future , there ample scope for the Indian foundry
industry to forge strategic alliances with their counterparts on the developed
countries , which are on the verge of closure primarily due to three major
reasons .waste disposal and highly stringent pollution control regulation , high
labor cost and acute shortage of the trained personnel to work in foundries. This
is where Indian foundries can make their presence felt in the international market
by approaching foreign foundries to source casting from India at more
economical prices and thus enhance their market share. In order to do these India
foundries have to equip themselves with the latest technologies such as
automation, casting simulation, etc. Indian foundry industries cannot afford to
Institute of Management Studies & Research
Tools, Farm Machinery, Mining Machine, etc. Major types of casting employed
in commercial foundries are sand casting, die casting, investment casting and
lost foam casting. According the type of foundry activity that the foundries are
involved in, commercial foundries are known

ANALYSIS OF McKINSEYS 7S MODEL AND FUNCTIONAL
DEPARTMENTS
4.1 INTRODUCTION
The McKinsey 7S Framework is a management model developed by well-known
business consultants Robert H. Waterman, Jr. and Tom Peters (who also
developed the MBWA "Management by Walking Around" motif, and authored In
Search of Excellence) in the 1980s. This was a strategic vision for groups, to
include businesses, business, and teams. The 7S are structure, strategy, systems,
skills, style, staff and shared values. The model is most often used as a tool to
assess and monitor changes in the internal situation of an organization.
The model is based on the theory that, for an organization to perform well, these
seven elements need to be aligned and mutually reinforcing. So, the model can be
used to help identify what needs to be realigned to improve performance, or to
maintain alignment (and performance) during other types of change.
Whatever the type of change restructuring, new processes, organizational
merger, new systems, change of leadership, and so on the model can be used to
understand how the organizational elements are interrelated, , and so ensure that
the wider impact of changes made in one area is taken into consideration.
4.2 Structure
The way the organizations units relate to each other: centralized, functional
divisions (top-down) decentralized (the trend in large organizations) matrix
network, holding etc
The design of organization structure is a critical task of the top management of
organizational, organizational structure refers to the organizational arrangement
and relationship. It prescribes the formal relationship among various position and
activities. In PSCPL the structure is very flexible enough to maintain the external
environment as well as internal also, the PSCPL is having lengthy structure of the
organization, his helps the organization to function smoothly. Here executive
