Purposes
Knowledge of computer use in the medical field:
1. Spreadsheets computations- Microsoft Excel
2. Knowledge of descriptive statistics and statistical analysis.
3. Basics Access database management (SQL).
Preliminary knowledge
Basics of mathematics,
Basics of computer - operating system, desktop publishing.
Lecture content 24 ore
Lecture 1. / 2 hours. History. What is informatics, medical informatics, computing system.
Hardware. Software. Windows - General elements of computer usage.
Lecture 2. / 2 hours. Microsoft Excel spreadsheet computation - data types, operators, cell
formatting, autofill technique, custom lists and formulas.
Lecture 3. / 2 hours. Microsoft Excel - absolute reference style R1C1, functions for calculation of
statistical measurement, counting - simple and conditional, the if() function, random number
generator.
Lecture 4. / 2 hours. Microsoft Excel - pivot tables, filters, the total technique, conditional
formatting.
Lecture 5. / 2 hours. Microsoft Excel - strings functions. Charts.
Lecture 6. / 2 hours. SGBDR - Access 2010. Database, database, data types and operators,
database creation, formatting a field with restrictions: default values, lists of values, field
validation, computed column.
Lecture 7. / 2 hours. Access 2010. Database query - SQL Select. Interrogation methods for data
selection by integrated generator and by SQL command. Creating custom expressions, special
operators, total technique, the iif()function, SQL update, SQL delete.

Lecture 8. / 2 hours. Types of distributions - elements of probability theory, binomial

distribution, Poisson distribution.
Lecture 9. / 2 hours. Descriptive statistics, types of variables, statistical measurements.
Lecture 10. / 2 hours. Gauss-Laplace distribution, confidence interval of the mean for a data set.
Lecture 11. / 2 hours. Comparing populations through samples average - student or t test.
Formula description, interpretation, examples, Fisher's exact test, calculation, interpretation.
Lecture 12. / 2 hours. Linear regression and correlation. Determination, interpretation, examples..
Lab content Schedule 28 ore
1. Windows: managing files, directories, installation and configuration - 2 hours.
2. Microsoft Excel: calculations using software functions - 6 hours.
3. Microsoft Excel: creating charts - 2 hours.
4. Microsoft Excel: functions dedicated for statistical area - 4 hours.
5. Database (Access) database creation, query, update, delete, aggregation - 4 hours.
6. Descriptive statistics. - 4 hours.
7. Statistical analysis of medical data using Microsoft Excel: t (student) test, linear regression,
correlation, Fisher's exact test - 6 hours.

Spreadsheets computation for medical data, charting, calculation of statistical measurements, data
comparison with t test (student) - calculation and interpretation, linear regression and correlation
method of computation, interpretation, regression chart, data management using Microsoft Access
- basic.
Qualifications
1. Using Microsoft Excel spreadsheet for data management in the medical field.
2. Skills to calculate and interpret descriptive statistical parameters.
3. Basic elements of statistical analysis.
4. Knowledge to compute the linear regression and correlation interpretation of results.
5. Creating charts using Microsoft Excel.
6. Basic management Access database.
