FIVE DRAMATIC CONSEQUENCES OF GLOBAL WARMING

The effects of global warming on our planet are becoming clearer and more
dramatic. The increase alarmingly rapid of the temperature, extreme weather events and their
devastating impact on human lives, all clearly outline a pessimistic picture for the state of the
Earth.
In the last century, global temperatures have increased by about 0.74 degrees Celsius and
this change may seem insignificant, but the rapidity of increase is alarming, says Live
Science. More than half of this amount has been accumulated since 1979, according to the
Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Climate Change.
The devastating effects of climate change threaten millions of people, condemning them
to poverty, according to a recent report by the World Bank. In this regard, the president of the
international institution lending, Jim Yong Kim, is rising the alarm about the need for measures
to reduce gas emissions and, at the same time, emphasize the importance of helping countries at
risk, in order to survive extreme climate change.
The people most affected by these climate changes will be those already struggling with
poverty, but the effects will be reflected on the people living in tropical areas and the
marginalized communities, said the former President of Ireland, Mary Robinson, quoted by The
Guardian.
Extreme weather events fueled by global warming could eventually wins the entire
surface of the Earth, and this includes both periods of extreme heat and droughts, and storms and
blizzards, show Live Science. A recent study shows that in this century, Asia and the East Coast
regions of the United States are exposed to the danger of being hit by more frequent strong

hurricanes, reports Live Science.Researches show that the most affected regions will be the
North Pacific, North Atlantic and in the southern Indian Ocean.
The dramatic increase in temperature affects Arctic areas and favors melting
glaciers. This situation has already reached alarming proportions, for example in the Arctic
Ocean, where it reached a high of melting ice blocks in 2012, according to the World
Meteorological Organisation. The glaciers of Mount Everest region have been affected by global
warming, falling by about 13 percent in the past 50 years. Even residents of the Swiss Alps are
exposed to emerging threats caused by retreating glaciers in the region. Melting glaciers in the
Arctic is a problematic phenomenon because it results in rising sea levels, stresses Live Science.
According to the US Environment Protection Agency, global sea water level has risen by about
20 centimeters (8 inches) of 1870 and the amount is increasing.
Because of the global warming, food security problem could become more
worrisome. The drought could contribute to decreased productivity in the agriculture sector,
which could also affect the dairy - industry looks Climate Hot Map. Soil affected by drought
risks to become impractical because of falling fertility. Also, higher temperatures causes the need
of irrigation land with greater frequency, which increases production costs, and bears and
conflicts on water resources. The possibility of reduced or even disappearance of winter can lead
to alarming increase of harmful insects and plant crops that can reproduce so often and live
longer. The negative consequences in this regard is because of heavy rainfall, favoring the
occurrence of floods.
Global warming will have a major impact on the lives of various species. For example,
polar bears could be affected by melting ice, Live Science writes. A study shows that baby polar
bears are exposed to risk by 45 percent more likely to die if they have to swim 48 kilometers in
comparison to the pups swimming shorter distances and whose risk of dying drops to
18%. These animals are forced to swim even for 12 days due to ice fragility of the Arctic Ocean
region. Also due to higher temperatures, will be at risk of infection by specific bacteria tropical
and subtropical areas, says Live Science. Nearly a third of the world's animals could disappear
by 2080 because of climate change, according to a report published in the journal Nature Climate
Change.

These are five important and alarming consequences of global warming. The impact on
people and the whole planet does not stop here, and the effects of increasing temperatures are
increasingly visible and increasingly worrying looming.1
