Aquino. Most of
my generation is
so young that we
do not even remember the Martial Law Era.
Or maybe we are just too busy trying to get
ahead that we forget that someone paid the
price so we could make our own decisions.
A few months ago, I only had a vague idea of
who Ninoy was, how he suffered and what
he sacrificed all for the sake of our freedom
to determine our own future.
Then I found the Ninoy Cory phone. At
first I was just attracted by its fun yellow color
and its cool qwerty keypad. The images of
Ninoy and Cory and the “I Am Ninoy
Glasses” make a definite collector’s item for
me. But what really amazed me was the yel-
low ribbon icon in the middle of the menu.
Not knowing what it was, I clicked on it and
found myself going into time travel with Ninoy
and Cory Aquino.
I was amazed by all the audio recordings
of prayers were in the phone! Admittedly I
am not really too familiar with the prayers
from my youth but I found myself praying
along with this soothing lady’s voice as she
prayed the rosary in the phone content. This,
along with the Stations Of The Cross , spe-
cial blessings and other prayers, are recorded
with an equally soothing music bed. It al-
most felt like Cory was praying with me. I
heard that Cory and Ninoy agreed to pray
the rosary together every night even though
they were separated by jail. By the way, don’t
get scared if it starts praying the Angelus and
the Three O’Clock Habit by itself. Its not
haunted, just set to alarm even if the phone
is off.
I was so moved by the audio interviews
where Cory told the story of her own struggles
in keeping the family together while she hung
onto to her Ninoy in jail. I can’t imagine how
anyone’s family could survive under such
stress! I was amazed at the video of Tita Cory
and the standing ovation she got when she
addressed the US Congress. It really made
me proud to be pinoy! Now I also under-
stand both Ninoy and Cory’s values that
enabled them to be so committed to their sac-
rifice for the sake of the Filipino.
It is the hope of young people like me that
our new leaders will have the same commit-
ment to our people with no thought of per-
sonal gain. Its only when we the younger
generation, hear the stories of bravery and
self-sacrifice of our leaders, develop our own
hope that we can still change our future and
care enough to sacrifice for the sake of our
country too. Maybe if we all learn and be in-
spired by the example of Ninoy and Cory,
we can inspire future generations too.
That’s why I am so touched by the Ninoy
