Gerlach En Koop - Choses Tuees

ROMA Publications 2015 ISBN 9789491843488 Acqn 25737
Pb 21x29cm 118pp 20col ills 22.50
Working as a collective since 2000, the artists gerlach en koop apply repetition, copying, or reuse
to render things visible. Through displacement and misplacement, omissions, erring, and making
mistakes, they enact their fascination with the minute differences between two identical things.
The smaller the distance, the more interesting a thing can be. Using objects, readymades,
architectural interventions, sculptural or graphic images, words or gestures, they create works
that are both straightforward and sophisticated. This book is the first volumes in a series, and is
published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at de Appel arts centre in Amsterdam in
fall 2015.

Irene Kopelmans work explores the parallel worlds of artists and researchers. In 2012, she
applied for a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship, an opportunity that could ignite endless
ideas. This book is the result of the work she produced during visits to the Smithsonian Tropical
Research Institute in Panama. Without formal scientific training, Kopelman hoped to achieve an
understanding of methods in field biology, and contacted three researchers to assist as
interlocutors: Stuart J. Davies (forest ecology), Owen McMillan (adaptive variation), and Bill
Wcislo (animal behaviour). She replicates the forms of woody vines, mangrove roots, and
randomly scattered crab pellets.

the here and the possible. During the exhibition, several performances will take place. In addition,
Kunstverein Amsterdam, in collaboration with the artist and the Cobra Museum, presents Jennifer

In three recent video installations, Zachary Formwalt focuses on the architecture of OMAs new
Shenzhen Stock Exchange and the Amsterdam stock and commodities exchange by H.P.
Berlage. Although our economy is dictated by financial transactions, the activity of trading itself
has become increasingly remote, without actual human encounter. The architecture of the two
buildings serves as a starting point for a investigation into the limitations of photography to
represent global capital and into the interrelationships between financial capitalism and imagemaking.

In the spring of 2015, two exhibitions under the title Politics of Installation were made by Belgian
artists Hans Demeulenaere and Bas van den Hurk. The title refers to a text by Boris Groys, in
which he claims that installations made by artists reveal a sovereign world. Within these worlds
there is not one dominant perspective, but rather an exchange of multiple perspectives. An
important part of the project was to include art historical lines based on architectural elements.
Demeulenaere refers to the work of architect Aldo van Eyck, and Van den Hurk to the
architecture of Juliaan Lampens.

several artists associated with Siegelaubs curatorial practice, and applies unconventional modes
for the exhibition and distribution of art. Siegelaub asked each participating artist to create 25
pages of work that responded to the photocopy format, which was new at the time. A pivotal

Surrealism in Belgium - The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie

Marot 2015 ISBN 9782930117430 Acqn 25202
Hb 27x31cm 160pp 250ills 125col 43.95
From the start, the Belgian Surrealists--among them Ren Magritte, Paul Delvaux, Paul Noug,
E.L.T. Mesens and Marcel Marin--distinguished themselves from their Parisian counterparts with
their dry wit, brilliant conceptualism and knack for combining the fantastical and the everyday
(e.g., Magritte's bowler-hatted men, or Marcel Marin's iconic single-lensed spectacle), and their
disinclination to issue Breton-style manifestos.
This revelatory volume celebrates the Surrealist movement in Belgium through a group of more
than 250 paintings, drawings, photographs, prints and books by artists such as Rachel Baes,
Paul Delvaux, Camille Goemans, Jane Graverol, Tom Gutt, Jacques Lacomblez, Ren Magritte,

Colby College Museum Of Art 2015 ISBN 9780972848411 Acqn 25206
Hb 23x31cm 320pp 345col ills 39.95
In his "Ten O'Clock Lecture" in 1885, American James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) presented
himself as an artist set apart from the public, bearing no relation to the historical moment in which
he lived. However, the myth of artistic independence that Whistler developed was but one part of
a complex and highly significant relationship he had with the world around him. As a painter,
printmaker, designer, traveller and performer, Whistler engaged with a variety of places, people
and ideas that stretched from the United States to London, Venice and Japan. Drawn entirely
from the Lunder Collection, this comprehensive catalogue places Whistler in a dynamic
international and cosmopolitan context.

Brakhage's Childhood
Granary Books 2015 ISBN 9781887123839 Acqn 25228
Pb 17x23cm 350pp 35ills 31.95
Brakhage's Childhood recounts the story of visionary American filmmaker Stan Brakhage's (19332003) life up to age 12. In 1983 Stan and Jane Brakhage began a series of interviews wherein
Stan described his life and Jane took notes. Each session yielded a chapter and each chapter
usually a place. After each interview Jane organized, wrote and edited the stories. After two years
they had 23 chapters in 100,000 words. "He had the most amazing memory I had ever
encountered," says Jane, who writes: "This is a biography of a child, taken from the memory of
that child grown up. I can only assume that we stopped the interviews, stopped the book, stopped
the marriage, at exactly the right moment. Stan and I worked together a lot in his medium; this
time, we worked together in my medium." "In the end," writes Tony Pipolo in the afterword,
"[Jane] created a masterly fiction about a fiction that reveals undeniable truths, assuming an
autobiographical posture at once commanding and equivocal, a chronicle of semi-Dickensian
misery offset by plainspoken observations about an American childhood bearing the mark of its
author's writing style, demonstrated in books written during and after her life with Stan Brakhage."
Brakhage's Childhood is a remarkable achievement conceptually, intellectually and aesthetically,
and provides crucial insight into the early life of one of America's most inspired and complex
experimental filmmakers.

diverse selection of works exploring notions of Japanese identity, wherein the artist examines the
boundaries between the private and the public, a domain of specific importance to his native
culture. In the process, he also addresses the innate cruelty and violence of human nature.
Koizumi describes art-making as recognising ones own subconscious violence and cruelty
through a process of identifying with gazes how one looks at others or at tragedy.

domain is a challenge, but also an opportunity. This book explains the copyright fundamentals of
the public domain and discusses the difficulties involved in implementing it in the everyday

Thierry Davila presents an innovative study of Belgian artist David Claerbouts work, following the
dark logic that structures many of his films with duration and slowness, as well as a number of
invisible photographs. Claebouts works are marked by an interrogation of time as an artistic
medium. Inspired by phenomenology and the writings of Gilles Deleuze on the image and
cinema, he has developed a kind of photography in movement, into which he introduces
narrative elements. Looking at his work means spending enough time waiting for things to
happen, causing a reconsideration of what narration and storytelling can be when dealing with
current technologies.

Israeli industrial designer Yaacov Kaufman is noted for work that evokes a sense of dealing with
ready-made. In fact, he creates each piece as part of a study of nuances an embodiment of
his search for simplicity and abstraction through minimal intervention. Each of his pieces of wood,
metal, glass, and other miscellaneous materials is endowed with an individual identity and
anthropomorphic qualities, implying a historical and archaeological tradition dating to prehistory.
The figurines seem to be ritualistic talismans or shamanistic objects, and thus begin to take on
lives of their own. Published in conjunction with an exhibition of Kaufmans intriguing figurines in

something that encodes or decodes, compresses or decompresses data but the motion picture
can still be briefly distorted, depending on various factors, from signal glitches or frequency

images from these exact moments of significant digital disturbance or dysfunction in order to

This is a book about one artist and how he addressed the gallery system in the 70's. He basically
took the art he found in galleries and turned the paintings and sculptures into "Readymades". He
didn't go to the hardware store to look for "found objects". He went to Leo Castelli's and found art.
He would sell the art by putting red dots near the work or he would hit the art with a tuning fork to
get the sound off art and much more. The end result of all this was the birth of a new way of
seeing and a brand new way of painting.

which sometimes lasted days and took him to remote areas such as the deserts of Africa, as well
as Australia, Canada, Japan, Switzerland and Norway, brought him international fame in that
period. Since 1981, he has also been experimenting in painting using mud and applying it by
hand, establishing a dialogue between the primitive gesture of leaving a handprint and the formal
elegance of his work.
