SAAs 81st Annual Meeting is almost upon us! We are excited to be hosting
this years annual meeting in Orlando, Florida, The City Beautiful, April
610, 2016. With an exciting array of papers, posters, and forums, the
2016 meeting promises to deliver a vibrant scholarly program as well as a
host of other activities!
This years meeting will open Wednesday night with my first Presidents Forum, Climate
Change and Archaeology. This forum will examine climate change from several perspectives.
Speakers will survey models from climate science; past climate change effects on human
societies; archaeological remains as proxy climate records; climate change and plant
domestication; and archaeological heritage management in times of climate change. The
forum is organized by Daniel Sandweiss. I hope you will join us for this special event.
In 2016, the SAA Board will host the overwhelmingly popular student reception Wednesday
night from 9:00-10:30pm. It is not to be missed and I encourage all students to attend.
I hope you can join us for what is sure to be a memorable meeting!
Diane Gifford-Gonzalez, RPA
President

From The Orlando Program Chair

Dear Colleagues,
For the first time ever in its history, the SAA Annual Meeting will be held
in Orlando, Florida. This annual meeting attracted the third-largest
number of submissions ever! We are expecting an extraordinary meeting.
The meeting will kick off Wednesday night with the Presidents
Forum Climate Change and Archaeology, a timely and ever important
discussion to which archaeology can make a unique contribution. Caribbean research,
together with Polynesia, composes probably the most international and diversified group
of archaeologists that can be grouped together, coming from the Caribbean proper, but
also from South America, North America, and Europe.
Being SAAs Annual Meeting Program Chair is a time-consuming endeavor, but also
offers a wonderful window for the diverse range of research being done in archaeology in
the world today. Those of you coming to Orlando will be able to sample some of this. I am
positive this will be a remarkable meeting.

Welcome to Orlando, The City Beautiful, in the center of the Sunshine

State! Orlando was the hub of the citrus industry in the 19th century,
became a mecca for tourism in the 20th century, and hopes to become a
global leader in the innovation economy in the 21st century. SAA has
arranged for several attendee-only discounts to facilitate your enjoyment of
Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Florida should you so choose. SAA has organized
a tour to the Vero Site (8IR09) to see ongoing work by Mercyhurst University. Other
suggestions for activities independent of the meeting include exploring Downtown Orlando
to see a mix of historic structures dating back to the 1890s and trendy dining options, or
planning a visit to the Orange County Regional History Center, which also provides views
of beautiful Lake Eola, one of the citys 100 lakes. And dont forget your sunscreen!
I look forward to welcoming everyone to Orlando for the 81st Annual Meeting of the
SAA in April!

SAA Vero Site Tour

9:00am3:00pm; maximum 45 persons;
$29
Thank you to the Old Vero Ice Age Sites
Committee (OVIASC) and Mercyhurst
University for providing lunch and their
support of this tour!
In 1913 the Vero Site (8IR09) was discovered shortly after construction of the
towns main drainage canal through a
low lying basin with three incoming
creeks. Within two years, the paleontological site became a very controversial
Early Man archaeological site. A wide
range of plant and animal remains,
including 25 extinct taxa, were found in
apparent association with partial
remains of at least five people. The very
idea of Pleistocene aged humans in the
New World was contentious with Ales
Hrdlicka and Wm Henry Holmes leading the criticism of Vero. A whos who

Sample Release of Claims

I agree and acknowledge that I am participating in the [name of tour]
(Tour) on my own accord. I give this acknowledgement freely and knowingly
and I represent and warrant to you that I am physically and mentally fit and
that, as a result, able to participate, and I do hereby assume responsibility for
my own well-being.
I am fully aware that possible physical injury might occur to me as a
result of my participation, and I agree to assume the full risk, including risk
which is not specifically foreseeable, of any injuries, including death, damages
or loss regardless of severity, which I may sustain as a result of participating in
any and all activities connected with or associated with the Tour.
In consideration of the right to participate in the Tour, I hereby waive
any and all rights or claims I may have as a result of participation in the Tour
against the Society for American Archaeology and their respective directors,
officers, employees, members, staff, and all individuals assisting in instructing
and conducting these activities, and I hereby fully release and discharge them
from any and all claims resulting from injuries, including death, damages or
loss, which may accrue to me or my heirs arising out of or in any way connected with my participation in the Tour.
I further agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the Society
for American Archaeology, and their respective directors, officers, employees,
members, staff, and all individuals assisting in instructing and conducting these
activities, from any and all claims resulting from injuries, including death,
damages, or loss, which may accrue to me or my heirs arising out of or in any
way connected with my participation in the Tour.

of early 20th century researchers visited

the site through the 1930s. Yet the actual age of initial occupation of the site
remains unknown despite the efforts of
Elias Sellards through 1960.
Current excavations were initiated in
2014 after coring and trenching investigations demonstrated that intact stratigraphic sequences survived adjacent to
the original locus of investigation and in
other areas of the site. The unequivocal
age of the site has been pushed from
4,0007,500 years ago to about 11,000
calendar years based on an in situ flake
from a large core from at least 130 miles
to the NW. More intriguingly, thus far
more than 500 fragments of carbonized
plant and bone fragments, and a small
number of charred clay pieces, have
been recovered in place in well-defined
strata bracketed by dates of 11,100 and
14,000 calendar years ago. These data
indicate that there are multiple thin
Pleistocene layers of anthropogenic origin on a low dune next to the aboriginal
creek basin. A broad array of ongoing
research questions and projects will be
discussed during the tour.
Proposed Schedule:
8:30 Board bus
9:00 Bus departs Dolphin Hotel
10:30 Arrive at Old Vero Man Site

11:00 Tour original excavations
11:30 Visit current covered excavations

These new data add to an existing,

although underutilized backlog of
archaeological information, some of it
in digital formats, some not. Without a
well thought-out approach to data management, important information,
whether in digital formats or not, will
be overlooked or lost because it is forgotten, misplaced, or damaged. Good
digital data management requires attention to the means of data storage,
aspects of archiving data, how data are
to be preserved, and the curation of
data so that it is discoverable, accessible,
and usable.
Participants will need to bring their
own laptop computer with wireless
capabilities and files (such as a report,
dissertation, dataset, etc.) to upload to
tDAR (the Digital Archaeological
Record) as part of the exercise in the
second half of the workshop. Participants also will receive a voucher for
three additional no-charge file uploads
(up to 30 MB) and a copy of Caring for
Digital Data in Archaeology: A Guide to
Good Practice.

This workshop will present information related to the background of data

management, how good data management is organized, and tools and methods that they can integrate into their
existing project and research workflows
to ensure good management of digital
data. Participants will be introduced to
the types of digital repositories that are
available and where they can browse,
access, and download archaeological
documents, data sets, images, and other
kinds of archaeological information.
Archaeologists, whether they work in
CRM, for government agencies, or in
academic positions, can use digital
repositories to store, organize, and promote their archaeological work. The
workshop will focus on case studies and
examples in tDAR. Participants will
learn how to access and use resources in
the repository and curate and manage
CRM reports, data sets, photographs,
GIS files, and other archaeologically relevant digital resources. They will also
get a chance to curate their own archaeological materials in tDAR as part of
this workshop.
