Parks And EDC To

Commence New
Boardwalk Work
The Economic Development
Corporation (EDC) announced
some preparation work to be
done in Phase 5B of the new
boardwalk plan, which runs from
Beach 38th to Beach 19th Street.
EDC plans to erect fencing on
the landside north of the boardwalk to begin site preparation
including clearing, grubbing and
grading, the message from Alexander Maureau, the project
development coordinator, said.
No work will take place south
of the boardwalk. EDC would
like to start this prep work at the
end of January and will work with
[the Parks Department] to set up
a pre-construction meeting this
summer, before any active construction work commences on
the boardwalk. Any residents
with questions or concerned are
encouraged to contact Maureau

Markings
Scheduled For Far
Rock
New crosswalk markings and
an additional speed bump will
be added to some Far Rockaway streets. The markings will
be at Beach 9th Street and Roosevelt Court and the speed bmp
will be at Beach 17th Street
between Brookhaven Avenue
and Plainview Avenue, near St.
Johns Episcopal Hosptial. The
painting will be completed in
Spring 2016.
These are tremendous improvements to areas that have
long been a concern in Far
Rockaway,
Assemblyman
Phil Goldfeder said. The new
crosswalk markings will make
Beach 9th and Roosevelt a safer, less confusing intersection
for our families and the speed
bump on Beach 17th will slow
down speeding cars and protect pedestrians as they walk to
school.
Terrace Fire
at Surfside
A high-rise fire occurred
in the early hours of Sunday, January 17 at the Surfside buildings. An apartment
fire broke out on the eighth
floor of the 13-story building
at 106-20 Shore Front Parkway. The blaze occurred on
the terrace of a three-bedroom apartment. A call was
received about six minutes
after midnight and the FDNY
arrived within four minutes.
The fire was under control by
12:35 a.m. There was water
and smoke damage, but no
one was injured as no one was
home at the time. We consider ourselves very lucky, the
resident said. It is believed
that a faulty outlet on the terrace led to the fire. In March
2015, another Surfside apartment fire occurred at 107-10
Shore Front Parkway, resulting in the death of a 77-yearold woman on the 7th floor.

Cracking Down
on Terrorism
NYS Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. and other members of the
Senate Committee on Veterans,
Homeland Security and Military
Affairs, are looking to advance
several anti-terrorism bills.
The seven proposals that garnered Addabbos support are
aimed at cracking down on terrorism recruitment; addressing cyber
security threats; providing greater
punishment for those who solicit
or support for terrorist acts; fighting
back against terror threats against
police officers, and establishing a
New York State Terrorist Registry.
We need to make sure that
hateful criminals whose only
agenda is to bring tragedy and suffering down upon our residents
continue to fail in their twisted
and despicable campaigns of destruction, Addabbo said.
The package of legislation approved by the Senate Veterans,
Homeland Security and Military
Affairs Committee will now be sent
to other appropriate committees
for review or may otherwise move
closer to a vote by the full Senate.

The Boatel That Fell To Earth

BOWIE INSPIRED PROJECT IN THE WORKS

David Bowie was the master

of reinvention, drifting flawlessly from Aladdin Sane to the Thin
White Duke to the Goblin King,
all the while creating new musical
identities with each successive
album. But perhaps his most lasting creation is Ziggy Stardust, the
androgynous alien rock star from
Mars who encouraged freaking
out in a moonage daydream and
pleaded for humans to hang on to
ourselves. In the spirit of the legendary cultural figure, who died
at the age of 69 last week after a
battle with cancer, Philipp Mohr
and a host of artists local and otherwise are in the process of redesigning a houseboat at Marina 59,
aptly named Ziggy Stardust.
I was looking for a name thats
inspiring, something that has
open-mindedness, Mohr said
on the boat as Heroes and other Bowie classics played in the
background. Its such an artistic
community here. That character

represents so muchits weird,
creative, on the fringe of society
and not conforming. Mohr also
said that Bowies constant change
in character represents human
nature in general, as no person
remains static for their entire life.
The big blue boat is in the middle of a renovation and when it is
finished Mohr will seek to turn
it into a boatel, a place for outof-towners to stay for a few days
while they catch some waves and
explore the rest of what the peninsula has to offer. Mohr and a
variety of associates including
Greg DeGroat, Nick Hotto, and
Laura Petrucci are building bunk
beds, finishing the floors, and
painting doors in preparation for
an April or May opening. Other
artists who are fixing up the boat
include Sean Rice, Atticus Moorman, Nick Bendik, Grace Eddy,
Lacey Carter, and Will Sheehan.

as a precaution. While National
Grid was not working over the
holidays a DOT Inspector came
out and noticed more cracks
even without work being done
so they closed the road. The DEC
said the road could be replaced
without dealing with any contamination since it is so deep
that there is no additional clean
up planned for underneath the
roadway. They will have to rip up
the road and replace it with a new
sub-base (a layer of aggregate
material laid on the subgrade)
underneath before they can replace the roadway, he said.
The work is still in the planning stages and there is no
timeline for when the project
will be completed. The DOT
was advised to adjust the traffic lights to a blinking red, so
drivers dont have to wait at the
red lights at the closure sights.
Currently, those who run the
solid red light, can still receive
a ticket.

The Beach Channel Drive closure at Beach 108th Street still has
no definite end. Latest discoveries suggest it may take longer
than a quick fix. Danny Ruscillo, Co-Chair of the Community
Board 14 Transportation Committee, recently provided an
update with information from
city agencies.
I reached out and spoke
with the Department Of Conservation (DEC). They told me
they know whats under the
roadway (as far as contamination goes) in the area of Beach
Channel Drive from Beach
108th Street to Rockaway Freeway. National Grid and the
Department of Transportation
(DOT) have to check for structural damage. From there they
will have to figure out how to
stabilize the Subgrade (material underneath a constructed
road), put in backfill to raise up
everything to where it should
be, and get it all stabilized and
then repave.

SNOWBIRDS

There hasnt been much

snow, or cold, or winter for
that matter, but thats about
to change. And when it does,
folks around these parts start
to head down south. They are
known as snowbirds. Yeah,
I know some of you thought I
would be talking about those
beautiful red cardinals in the
backyards of Rockaway. And
they are beautiful indeed. Did
you know that its typically the
males that are brightly colored
red, while the females are a more
muted-brown? Or perhaps you
were thinking that maybe I was
referring to those yellow finches that have wandered lost into
our backyards during the winter months. But no, I am talking
about those folks who get on
those silver birds docked at JFK,
shuttling us back and forth from
the Sunshine State: Florida.
But things are different now

with global warming changing the weather patterns that
have dictated the flight paths
for so many decades. First of all,
this winter it has been cold in
Florida. The southern bastion
of beautiful people has been
washed over with windy waves
of coldness. Second, El Nino
has brought rain and clouds. Of
course, Florida always experiencing drought-like conditions
could use the water. But for all
those escaping the white flakes
of their northern homes, a little
less water would be appreciated.
Florida, once a wilderness of
swamps and shorelines, is now
more of a superhighway with extensions to the east and west, accessing towns that are now fully
populated with friends and family from the north. Yes, whether
you are headed to Boca, Palm
Beach, Tampa, Clearwater, Naples, South Beach, it seems like
you now know at least five people

who live there and who you can
visit with once you get there.
If you are arriving in Orlando,
you are typically surrounded by
kids heading to Disney or one of
the other American entertainment centers. If you are headed to
the Palm Beaches, well its a more
dignified look that you might see
moving elegantly through the airport. Miami, with access to South
Beach and to the Keys, has a more
international feel, with a laid back
approach. While the west coast is
home to the seasoned Floridian
traveler forsaking the east coast
for peace and quiet.
But no matter where you go, you
are bound to bump into a person
from Rockaway. As Irelands
greatest export was its people,
so it seems is Rockaway when it
comes to travel to Florida. Must
be something about the ocean
that draws us all there. The only
other place that I can think of
that does that is Puerto Rico, as

so many Rockwayites seem to
head there too.
There can only be one explanation for all this traveling
south to be by the water during
the winter months, and it has
nothing to do with birds. It can
only mean that deep down in
every Rockaway soul is an innate magnetic pull to the warm
waters. And what can explain
that? Only one thing. All Rockawayites are descended from
an ancient race of mermaids
and mermen. And only when
this ancient race is close to the
warm waters, fully lubricated,
are they truly happy. So answer
the siren, Rockaway, head to
warmer waters, get rejuvenated,
it will soon be St. Patricks Day,
signaling the arrival of the gulf
stream back to the peninsula,
and the return of our friends
the whales, dolphins, and yes,
mermaids!

Metroplex, fell into foreclosure
in 2010 just two years after being built as the real estate market collapsed amidst the financial crisis.
The building faced trouble
even before completion as local residents sued to stop construction in 2005 as they alleged
the developers were blocking
an easement to the beach. Protests were also mounted over
the over-development of the
area which is home to a historic bungalow community. Despite those efforts, the building
was completed but more trouble was just ahead.

Rockaway Times is hosting a
photo contest with a $500 top
prize.
Columnist John Cori recently approached The Rockaway
Times with a great idea for a
photo contest. We have all
these amazing photographers
in Rockaway and Broad Channel and they deserve some recognition and exposure. Did you
know Rockaways Mister Softee
is one of the greatest photographers out there? Dan Mundy Jr.
is a great Broad Channel photographer, and then you have
Laura Deckelman in Bayswater,
Cori said. Why not give some of

them and other professional and
amateur photographers some
recognition?
From now until April 15, anyone can enter the contest by submitting photos to PhotoExpo@
RockawayTimes.com. The photos will be judged in ten different
categories: 1)Sunsets/ sunrise 2)

featured in a boardwalk concession display, Cori said. My
ultimate goal is to have a final
expo on the boardwalk. Im

Department and the idea is
to have the images enlarged,
laminated and put on display
on the boardwalk near all of
the concessions like 86th, 97th,
106th and Beach 116th, about a
week before Memorial Day and
into Memorial Day Weekend, to
help out these businesses early in the season, and to give the
photographers some boardwalk
exposure.
Although its in the early stages, Cori believes the contest
will be a success. Everyone
has a picture of a sunset, surfer
or seagull. Were going to have

some really stiff competition.
Luckily, as coordinator, I wont
be judging, Cori said.

to Mohrs other houseboat, the
multicolored James Franco, at the
marinas A Dock.
This boat [Ziggy] was here for
ten years, Mohr said. The owner of the marina wanted to fix
up the boat but didnt have the
time. Ive been living out here for

a few years and they liked how I
fixed up [James Franco] so they
felt like I was a good person to fix
up this one, too. Mohr is conscious of the environment as he
remodels the boat, making an
effort to use pieces from fallen vessels, leftover boardwalk
remnants that washed up at
the marina, and surfboard resin to create flooring, countertops, and more. Shells from the
beach line the ceilings and the
walls are bursting with creative
pieces from Carter and others.
Mohr, who originally hails
from Berlin and is an architect
by trade, is an avid surfer and
had been living in Williamsburg
for years prior. A friend of mine
lived on a boat here called the
Pink Pirate four or five years
ago. I was looking for a spot on
the beach but it was difficult
to spend the summer here.

winter, Mohr rents a house in
the 90s and during the warmer months heads back to the
marina. It feels like an artists
residency here, he said. It inspired me to push forward with
what I wanted to do.
The artists working on the
boat with Mohr said that they
too have been inspired and
impressed by what Rockaway
has to offer. It was eye-opening to see other things that you
could be doing with your life,
DeGroat said. My friend Atticus and his friend Lacey came
to James Franco to live, Hotto
said. He invited me out here
one day. I took the A train to
Lefferts accidentally and didnt
get here until 11 p.m. and was
blown away. Everybody is so
used to looking for an apartment in Williamsburg or Bushwick, but you could be as much
a part of the city here. Petrucci
agreed, adding Every morning we get out here and two
swans come to greet us. Its a
very nice escape from the usual
commute. And the sunsets are
beautiful.
Mohr said that he is looking
forward to the completion of
Ziggy Stardust in the near future and is hopeful that he can
make connections with organizations running artist workshops. He thinks that the boat
serves an important purpose.
Its really needed out here,
especially for people coming
from to the city to visit Rockaway. Its just something Ive really enjoyed doing.

MMA POTENTIALLY
TO BE LEGALIZED
IN NY
Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder is seeking to enter the octagonor at least entice New
York State to finally legalize
mixed martial arts (MMA) officially. New York remains the
only state in the union that has
yet to sanction the sport, despite being a hotspot for other
combat sports such as boxing.
MMA involved the practice of
multiple disciplines such as
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, kickboxing, and amateur wrestling in
an attempt to submit, knock
out, or defeat an opponent.
It has exploded in popularity
over the past decade thanks to
Dana Whites Ultimate Fighting Championships promotion and fighters such as Ronda Rousey, Anderson Silva,
and Brock Lesnar. In Rockaway, CROM Physical Fitness is
a popular MMA gym.
Governor Andrew Cuomo
has proposed in his budget
to authorize the New York State

Athletic Commission (NYSAC)
to regulate both amateur and
professional MMA in a manner
similar to...professional boxing,
wrestling and sparring. Cuomo
and Goldfeder believe that the
state stands to inherit millions
in revenue if the sport is officially sanctioned due to the large
number of venues available for
matches in New York City and
elsewhere. Goldfeder proposed
a bill last year to legalize MMA
but it was never brought to the
floor.
Its unbelievable that New
York is the only state in the
country that hasnt legalized
Mixed Martial Arts, Goldfeder said. Not only does this
deprive millions of fans of the
chance to see the sport in their
own backyard, it also robs local businesses of the economic boost that the sport would
bring to our community.

New Art Space Grows in Rockaway

Something new is growing in

Rockaway. Artist George Turner has planted a new seed in
the old Fecund Clown building
on Rockaway Beach Boulevard,
transforming it into New York
Arbor, a commercial venue and
gallery for budding and growing artists and crafty folks.
Turner began New York Arbor
in 2009 with a fine art/ woodworking workshop at Industry
City in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
With the workshop located
right on the Brooklyn coast of
New York Harbor, and drawing
inspiration from metaphors for
trees, the seashore, the citys
waves of immigration and industry, and universal patterns
of growth, Turner named the
new venture New York Arbor.
He formed the foundation of
the woodworking atelier, allowing it to grow at the Brooklyn location for four years, until
a massive, nonnegotiable rent
increase starting in 2013 forced
him to move on.
In 2007, Turner and his wife,

Christine, came across Rockaway. We live in the East Village
and one day we took a ride to
end of the L train with our bikes
and we followed the path that
led us to Jacob Riis Park. It was
on a co-op in Rockaway Park. I

was going between the East Village, Sunset Park and Rockaway,
and I only wanted to be here,
Turner said. He started to look
for a new place to plant New
York Arbor on the peninsula. In
early June and nobody was really around in this magical place.
We kept going back that summer and felt that we needed this
place. By early 2008, we closed
August 2015, he came across an

ad for the sale of a creative studio near Beach 114th and Rockaway Beach Boulevard that was
last called The Creative Clown.

the former owner, was an honest and good guy and he wanted
a guy like me to have the space.
Everything clicked. It was golden, he said. Its on the boulevard and has a storefront and its
a space I love, in a neighborhood
I love, and I want to see it come
back to life.
Turner obtained the space in
September and started working
from scratch to transform what
was a rentable dance/ activity
studio into a gallery and commercial space for artists. Turner
is still in the midst of working
on the space, but has put official plans in motion for the beginnings of New York Arbor in
Rockaway.
Turner, an artist for about
20 years, dabbles in painting,
woodworking and other artistic mediums. As home to several creative-types, he believes
Rockaway is the perfect place
to help that creativity grow. If

Last week I was preoccupied
with giddy thoughts of what I
would do with all my new found
wealth after winning the $1.4 billion dollar lottery. My head was
filled with visions of enjoying the
lifestyle of the rich and famous.
Nightly dining at Masas in Manhattan which serves some of the
most exquisite and exclusive

cuisine in the world instead of a
monthly visit to the Empire Buffet
in Howard Beach. Frequent and
lengthy jaunts to faraway tropical
island paradises via my personal
yacht instead of our annual pilgrimage via the NY Thruway to
the Irish Alps up in East Durham.
Im not ashamed to admit that I
was thinking to myself, Ah yes,
you are destined to be wealthy!
My daughter Amy must have gotten wind of all this because she
called from Ohio warning me
not to get too worked about this.
Dad, if you did actually win you
would probably have a heart attack and the only trip youll take
is to the emergency room where
all your fine dining will consist
solely of hospital food. Perhaps
its just as well I didnt win.
Ever since 2012 when Sandy
left us in a house without heat
or power I have developed an almost obsessive disdain for cold
weather. Now, to make matters
worse, we have entered the coldest time of the year known as
the Dead of Winter which is

year-round curmudgeon they
have also stated that I have become especially grumpy during

My youngest daughter, Vicky,
who is attending college majoring in health, advised me that
I was probably depressed and
suffering from a mood disorder known as SAD or seasonal affective disorder. She stated
that there are medications that
could help with this issue. I told
her that SAD is nothing more
than an overblown label for the
garden-variety winter blahs. After all, once the holidays fade
from the rearview mirror of our
lives and all that holly jolly noveltys worn off, dont most of us
just want to fast track to spring?
Cmon, what kind of sick individual likes chapped lips? As long as
everyone keeps their hands off
the thermostat and my gas fireplace on the second floor I dont
need no stinking medication!

price of a barrel of crude dipped

Happy. Watching me hobble
about the house singing out loud
both Grace and Vicky agreed that
they felt there was something seriously defective with the wiring
between my ears. I told them they
should get over themselves because they were just jealous that
the old guy knew how to dance
the Nae Nae with a cane!

Women of Rockaway:
Lana Meli of Lanas Loft

As part of an ongoing series,

the Rockaway Times is profiling
local female entrepreneurs each
week. This week is Lana Meli,
owner of Lanas Loft.
Aware of the lack of places for
women to shop for clothing on
the peninsula, longtime Rockaway resident Lana Meli was
one of the first ladies to open a
womens boutique, providing
local women with a spot to get a
nice outfit without having to go
over a bridge to get one. Every
community should have the basic necessities. You shouldnt
have to travel 30 miles for decent clothing, Meli said, so she
brought a place of her own for
the neighborhood.
Lanas Loft is a full-service ladies boutique that carries brand
name clothing and accessories from juniors to plus sizes at
moderate prices. The products
change often depending on the
season and latest trends. It is
also the only local retail clothing shop that offers alteration
services, to help customers get
a proper fit on the perfect piece,
and they custom order sizes
if they dont have a size a customer is looking for. Meli runs
the store along with her young
daughter, Chloe. I couldnt do
this without my daughter. Shes
my partner in crime, Meli said.
She is also joined by her longtime seamstress, Janice, and
about seven sales girls that work
throughout the year.
Melis love for fashion started
at a young age. I taught myself
how to sew and make my own
clothing at a young age. Then I
went to the Fashion Institute of
Technology and went on to work
in the textile industry, clothing
industry and custom-made industry. I was always a custom
dressmaker, but I had a shop in
my house and when I sold my
house, I lost that, so I started to
rent the space on Beach 116th
Street, she said. Meli first started in a third-floor walkup space
above the Blue Bungalow. I had
so much extra room up there,
an eye-catching lavender, and

opened the new location in May
2015. She says her husband,
Vince, was one of her biggest
supporters when it came to the
move. This little space was so
ugly before we moved in. It needed a lot of work, but my husband
said lets do it and were glad
we did. Were very happy with
the response. People are always
thanking us for opening up the
new location, Lana said. Business is definitely up. Most of the
people that come in here didnt
know we were on 116th. We get
new customers coming in every
day, Chloe Meli said. We love
our customers. Theyre our
neighbors and friends and we
love working with them in this
community. We sincerely thank
our customers for supporting
our business, and for their many
lovely comments and good
wishes, Lana added.
Meli says owning her own
business was always a dream.
Ive always been a creative person and I love to shop and apply my creativity to my career. I
couldnt be one of those people
who sit behind a desk. Being an
entrepreneur is a calling. Ive
never wanted to do anything else
but own my own business and
youre not happy until youve
done it.
To those considering starting
their own business, Meli says,
Make sure you have a lot of
money behind you, because it
can take longer than you think to
get a business up and running.
You need to start with enough
money to support you before
so I wanted to see if I could sell

clothing up there. In 2012, just
before Hurricane Sandy, she
started her first retail venture.
It was my first time ever owning a retail store. Everything I
had learned along the way in my
career lead me to this next step,
she said.
However, it was slow to start after Sandy. We had no business
for six months after the storm,
but we managed to stay alive
since we were on the third floor,
Meli said. The third floor location proved to be a challenge in
itself. A lot of women had baby
carriages or had trouble getting
up the stairs. We loved the space
and it was a nice atmosphere,
but it was difficult getting exposure.
Despite the walkup challenge,
Lanas Loft gained a customer
base and Meli reached a goal,
which allowed her to grow. We
felt if we could get customers in
a third floor walkup, we could
make it in a first floor space,
Meli said. Once our sales met a
certain goal we had, we started
to look for ground floor space.
She found a prominent location
at 114-04, right on Beach Channel Drive. People thought we
were crazy to do all this work on
this store that had been empty
since Sandy. But it was time to
grow and were very happy with
the way it came out.
Meli transformed the space,
painting the outside faade After
you start generating profits. People are cautious about going into
new stores at first. You need to
build trust with your customers
and community and that can
take time. If you want to do it,
you have to go for it, even if it
works out or doesnt. We consider it a blessing every day were in
business.
Now that shes established herself, Meli is looking toward more
ways to improve and grow. Im
tossing around the idea of opening another store, but were waiting on that because it requires
planning. We also want to make
our online presence better, she
said. Meli would also like to return to her custom-made roots.
We want to start our own line
and make our own products, on
a small scale to start. Everything
takes baby steps when youre in
business, she said.

with him. New York Arbor will be
a commercial venue for painters,
sculptors and those who make
handcrafted goods. The space
will offer a formal gallery space, a
storefront and potential access to
woodworking equipment.
New York Arbor will be a
destination for original artwork
influenced by the people and
energy of Rockaways unique
environment. Our strategy for
growth is to nurture dedicated
local artists who not only wish
to avail their work for purchase,
but also want to creatively
emerge with New York Arbor
as an entity that contributes to
the collective revitalization of
Rockaway, Turner said. As we

grow, it is our hope that each
artist will be enabled to develop more professional work and
personal engagement in the
future operations of the New
York Arbor venture.
As trees change throughout the
year, so will New York Arbor. The
space will host four seasonal exhibits of curated paintings and
sculptures in the main gallery,
along with an ongoing thematic
display of selected artisanal wares
(decorative works, home goods,
textiles, etc.) in the storefront
space, Turner says. In keeping
with the theme of new beginnings
and growth, the first program will
feature artwork that evokes the

springtime essence of new beginnings and Turner is looking
for artists to participate. We are
seeking collage, drawings, paintings, and sculpture in any medium for presentation in the gallery
and seasonally appropriate decorative and/or utilitarian objects
for the storefront display, he said.
Pieces can be submitted starting now for the first show, which
is scheduled for March 20 to celebrate the spring equinox and
the opening reception will take
place on the evening of Thursday, March 17. The deadline for
submissions is February 15 and
the selected artists will be notified by February 22.
Applicants may submit up to
five image files of recent work,
each less than 1MB, accompanied by a corresponding image
list with titles, materials used,
dates of production, and links
to any other relevant work.
Also, artists should include
contact information, a brief
description of their creative
philosophy, and how they have
been affected by Rockaway.

The New York Arbor space
has long served as a location
for creative expression and
growth. It once served as a
unique gift shop called Rosies Books and Gifts Store.
When it was Busy Bees Learning Center, it was a store that
carried student and teacher
merchandise. It has history as an art studio previously
as The Fecund Clown, which
was destroyed by Hurricane
Sandy. Following Sandy, it was
transformed into The Creative Clown and was used as a
rentable location to host dance
and fitness classes, workshops
and events. The clown mural
above the building has been a
part of it since it was painted
by Geoff Rawling in 1997.Turner says he plans on keeping the
iconic clown mural as part of
the building and may consider
holding a celebration when the
mural turns 20 in 2017.

Act or react?
That has been my question
from the time I attended my
first CB14 meeting over six
years ago.
I would bring in rusted bolts
and pieces of rotting boardwalk wood from the old wooden boardwalk that were 25
years past their shelf life.
I would go on my usual
rants for three minutes during public speaking.
When I was done, blank
stares.
This went of for quite a few
board meetings until one
board member, Vince Castellano, who was on the board
at the time, broke with interpretive procedural tradition

and asked me a few questions.
You see, at the CB 14 meetings
there are no questions or answers during public speaking,
although the current by-laws
say differently!
Mr. Castellano asked me
point plank what I wanted. I
said, a new boardwalk, better beaches and finish the
2003 Army Corps study to get
more rock jetties (groins). After hearing what I had to say,
Mr. Castellano made a motion
to have the Parks Committee meet. He even questioned
when the last meeting had

been held. No one in the room

could remember because it
had been so long.
I was kind of shocked that
the committee that deals with
our communitys bread and
butter wouldnt already automatically meet regularly, but
no, committees on our community board meet as needed. This is according to Community Board 14s current
by-laws.
To me, when we have committees meet on an as needed basis, we are simply always
meeting to re-act. Just reacting to an issue on our peninsula and Broad Channel and
never taking proactive roles to
better our communities on the
peninsula and BC.
Now I am in no way advocating to see the by-laws amended to have every committee
meet every month like some
other community boards require around the city. I will
advocate for there to be a
mandatory meeting of every
committee at least two times
per year and all others be on
an as-needed basis.
I find it quite shocking that

the committee on education
has met once since August of
2013. Are our schools doing
that great that we as a community board do not need to hear
or feel the pulse of the parents who have children in the
schools? Or hear from parents
who are contemplating leaving
the peninsula because an elementary school they thought
was going to be built is not?
I am also quite frustrated
that the Economic Development Committee of CB14 has
not held a meeting in years.
Yes, you read that correctly in
YEARS!!!!
Yes, even since Sandy: nothing at all, zip, nothing, nada!!!!
I mean its in the title, Economic DEVELOPMENT. Yes,
the word develop somehow comes to mind as I read
that.
How does something develop if we never nurture an idea
or an issue for that matter?
I mean, is it just me or does
anyone else see a problem

A Visit to Beach 116th Street

After a long stretch in city government, I now teach an Urban
Economic Development class
at Baruchs School of Public Affairs. I recently took my Executive
Masters of Public Administration
class to Beach 116th Street in the
Rockaways. What better way to
teach than to introduce graduate
students to community leaders
who have provided strong and
steady leadership over the last
several years.
It was great to catch up with
my friend Mike Adil of Paninico
Caf. When I was the Citys Small
Business Services Commissioner,
it was always my first stop for a
hot cup of coffee and my favorite
breakfast sandwich - Mos Burrito. Mike explained to the class the
hard work he put into rebuilding
his restaurant.
We also met Lola Star who has
opened up a very inviting shop to
buy clothing and fun gifts with the
proud Rockaway brand. Lola, one
of Coney Islands biggest boosters,
has brought an added energy and
enthusiasm to Beach 116th Street.

facades or upgrade the appearances of their businesses. It really
upped the game for the street
and some new shops like Local
Liquids have followed suit with
creativity. Looking back, our decision to use local merchant Paul
Ohana to design most of the new
storefronts was an added plus -and certainly kept him smiling for
months.
A number of merchants told
me of the great work of the Beach
116th Street Partnership and
Mark Mina in having another special holiday celebration to light
the Christmas tree and Menorah. Mark has worked his magic
in producing first-rate events that
have drawn more Rockaway residents and visitors to the corridor.
The new benches along the two
shopping blocks are also a nice
addition. Unfortunately, the trash
cans were full with debris which

we were greeted with open arms
and amazing food. Claudette had
prepared a delicious family style
feast for 25 students and guests. I
was thrilled to see the brisk business at her takeout counter, coffee and juice bar.
At our lunch, the Beach 116th
Street Partnership was well represented by Chair Tom Hughes and
the Executive Director Linda Humphrey. In addition, Danny Ruscillo
of the 100th Precinct Council and
Brian Leary of CPEX Real Estate
joined in on the discussion. Robert
Kaskel , owner of Thai Rock, was
sitting at the coffee bar wearing a
great big smile. He recently learned
his restaurants earned the recognition of being recommended in the
Michelin 2016 Guide to NYC.

spoke about those rough days
and months after Hurricane
Sandy. They spoke about how
they came together to form the
Partnership and discussed some
of the gains that they have made
to strengthen the corridor and

Street, is working hard in rallying
the troops and plugging away on
initiatives to make Beach 116h
Street a better place. However,
she needs much more help and

support starting with the City.
Heres my quick list of things the
City should spearhead to make
Beach 116th Street an even more
memorable and inviting place:
The City needs to place one of
the new Ferry stops at Beach
116th Street. It is a no brainer
and will be a big boost for the
small businessesalong with
spurring much needed new development along the corridor.
The City pulled the plug on
millions of dollars of economic development initiatives that
were announced by the NYC
Economic Development Cor-
poration after Hurricane Sandy

as part of a Game Changer
Program. The Beach 116th corridor continues to struggle with
some large empty sites. The City
needs to come up with creative
new economic development
initiatives to jump start this very
important commercial corridor.
The Beach 116th Street Partnership has done an extraordinary job in rallying the merchants, creating new programs
and events to strengthen the
corridor, and tackling difficult
quality of life issues. Resources
have been earmarked for other
community based organizations
to deploy clean teams, promote
the area, and come up with creative and strategic plans. It is time
for the City to truly invest in this
important organization that has
made a tremendous difference.

BLESSING

A blessing has no species, nationality or religion. Blessings

come in all different forms.
Sometimes we dont know
something is a blessing until
way after it happens. Sometimes blessings are disguised.
These are the blessings that
happen in our lives. Once recognized, they are numerous.
At the suggestion of a teacher during a recent workshop,
I started a 100-day entry in an
active journal: each day I write
down what I feel is a blessing
on that day. Yesterday it was a
hot shower as I reveled in the
water enveloping me and diminishing any chill. Today it
was enjoying a delicious meal.
My guess is that as it goes on,
the blessing recognitions will
be more and more as I slow
down and make a point to feel
through all of the senses.
Recognizing blessings transforms into the realm of gratitude and being grateful on a
daily basis leads to bliss.
These are the blessings that
happen. Then, there is a way to
practice blessing. Intentionally. Being open to giving and
receiving blessings to/from all
living things. Sometimes there
are things in the way, e.g., anger, resentment, whatever it
may be, which are blocks to the
flow. We cant be in harmony
and flow if we have these strong
feelings. We need to bring the
harmony back and be in the
flow. Acknowledge the things
in the way and just say that you
forgive the root of what caused
those feelings. Just say it to
yourself, I have read about acts
of forgiveness that are beyond
my comprehension. Like the

killer after his sentence, and
rehabilitated him. He was in
a gang, never had a home life.
This is extraordinary, indeed,
we have only to think about it
in smaller terms and our lives
will change.
Practicing blessing begins
with making eye contact. The
eyes are the mirror of the soul
and reflect everything that
seems to be hidden; and like a
mirror, they also reflect the person looking into them. (Paul
Coelho) By making eye contact we see the being there
and how else can we act than
with compassion? To fare
thee well, to bless, to wish
the best. And in that moment
chances are that the other person has caught a glimpse of
your being and is doing the
same.
In order to partake in and
feel any of this, we have to slow
down and be in the moments.
And have good intentions for
all living things around us.
Just like a snowflake is never
repeated (imagine that), each
one of us is unique, yet, we are
all one: plants, trees, wildlife,
animals, humans. This is because we share the gift of being
alive.
Bless all before you and be
with an open heart to receive
the blessings coming your way.
It is all there, we just dont recognize it because were rushing past. I always come back to
my dads maxim: Stop. Look.
Listen. The next step is to not
only act kindly, but to wish the
best to someones eyes you have
engaged. Silently. Begin the
thread that unites us as one.
May you be happy, may you
be free, may you be grateful,
may you let go of things that do
not serve you, may you have inner peace.

I spent Christmas and New

Years in sunny Florida! The
weather was amazing and
broke all sorts of recordsevery day was in the 80s. Of
course even New York had unusually warm weather as well.
It was a treat to see flowers in bloom again! Petunias,
geraniums and begonias are
used as borders - much like
they are here; only difference
is its a much longer season in
West Palm!
Almost every day I was
able to pick a gardenia from
my sisters tree! Gardenias
are one of my all time favorites - the smell is just
heavenly!
A lot of gardens had large
succulents, hibiscus bushes
and trees, and something new
- orchids growing on palm
trees. It seems to be a new
fad- growing orchids in Span-

Thank God we finally have

Ive been on CB14 for over
two years and it reminds me of
our old boardwalk pre-October 28, 2012: fully functional,
but in major need of repair.

the peninsula. Massive erosion
is a huge problem. Of course, my
partner in crime, Eddy Pastore,

Of course we all know the
answers to the Army Corps
Study that has been going on
for what seems like the beginning of time. The answers as to
how to fix our eroding beach
are resting at Beach 86th

like a charm.

Some More Mass Transit Ideas for the New

Year Part II

In Part 1, last week, Allan

Rosen discussed some ideas
for smarter transportation. This
week he has more to share.
Another obvious idea is to
reopen the many subway entrances that were closed in the
1970s due to high crime and
the need for staffing those entrances. Those concerns are no
longer valid and the MTA finally is evaluating this idea. That
study should be completed expeditiously and with a speedy
implementation.
Let us now focus on ideas
that are not obvious like utilization of unutilized or underutilized railroad rights of way like
QueensRail and modernization
of antiquated local bus lines,
for example. QueensRail has
been discussed in this column
numerous times. Bus routes
are occasionally extended, with
groups of routes having been
updated through reorganizing
them to make them simpler,
more direct, and more functional, easing connections.
Adding new local routes are
also rare. The MTA has decided
that new routes must not operate more frequently than every
30 minutes in order to save on
operating costs and have designed them to terminate a

block or two from major transportation hubs making bus
connections difficult and hindering their attractiveness and
usefulness.
We could have a new route
from Beach 116th Street or Riis
Park (with free parking during
the winter months for commuters) to the Sheepshead Bay
subway station using the Belt
Parkway when construction is
completed. That would help
commuters immensely. The underutilized B2 to the Brighton
Lines Kings Highway Station
also could be extended to the
Rockaways.
Filling Transit Deserts has
become a buzzword. They exist
because the MTAs goal is to provide the least amount of transit
service that is politically feasible
rather than finding ways to attract passengers and improving
connections between neighborhoods because of over concern
with their budget. Their planning is myopic because rather
than viewing expenditures as
an investment toward attracting
patronage and generating revenue. Transit is viewed as a losing
proposition with there being no
connection between operating
expenses and revenue, which is
untrue.
The MTA needs to study where
the dollar vans are operating
and which are the most popular
ber trips to assess latent demand. Instead they only look
at their existing passengers and
census data to determine proper
service levels and routes.
Traffic congestion in Flushing
can be remedied by constructing an off-street bus facility as
once existed many years ago.
The solution is not exclusive bus
lanes and SBS.
Off-board fare collection at
major transfer points. This was
actually the policy in the 1950s
and 1960s. SBS proponents are
pretending it is an innovative
new idea that can only be instituted as part of SBS.
Redesign dangerous intersections, not entire corridors, and
stop pretending SBS will make
the streets safer for pedestrians.
A network of new affordable
express bus routes between major city hubs even if they only
make several trips a day. Look
at the popularity of the low cost
Megabus offering $20 trips to
Philadelphia, for example. Long
distance bus travel is not dead.
The chief complaint for not using local bus routes has always
been poor bus reliability and
bus bunching. The technology
to greatly reduce that problem

is now available with BusTime if
it is working correctly. It should
enable bus dispatchers to view
the location of all buses at the
same time. However, it is rarely
if at all being used. Why?
If there is a valid reason, the
MTA needs to make us aware of
it. What we need is more transparency from government. It appears that the word problem
has disappeared from our language. All problems have now
become challenges. (Notice how
often DOT uses that word). So
MTA, what is the challenge with
using new technology to keep
our buses running on time?
Adequately utilizing our waterways and adding bike lanes
where they do not punish motorists by slowing trips for many
thousands to benefit a few hundred.

smart ideas!

Blocks of the Rock: Beach 130th Street

Resilience has been a

word that is frequently thrown
around to describe Rockaway as
a whole, especially in the years
following Hurricane Sandy. But
no single entity in this great
area embodies the definition of
the word better than the people
who live on Beach 130th Street
between Newport Avenue and
Cronston Avenue. Smack in
the middle of Belle Harbor, the
block borders the neighborhoods only major commercial
center and is within spitting
distance from its major church
and playground at St. Francis
de Sales. But what has made
the character of the block is its
ability to bounce back and persevere in the face of tragedy, be
it a nearby plane crash or a devastating fire that wiped out the
homes and personal possessions of over 30 people.
My wife and I were in Cobble Hill, we had been there for
a long time, James DiBenedetto said. They moved to Beach
Beach 130th
130th Street just over a year prior to Sandys landing on October

29, 2012. Our neighborhood
was becoming Manhattan-like,
getting very overcrowded. One
day I was walking over Marine
Parkway Bridge to visit family that lived in Roxbury. It was
a beautiful day, you could see
whole peninsula and water behind, and I thought I should live
out here. I talked to my wife and
she said she had always thought
about moving to Rockaway too.
It was a great move.
Prior to the storm, Marie Rudolph, who has lived on the

block for over 30 years, said that
the block was tight-knit. The
year of September 11th we started having a block party the week
before, she said. She explained
that they didnt have the party in
2002 out of respect for the ones
Rockaway lost but continued the
tradition up until Sandy. Everybody got along except a couple
of wackos here or there.

shared harrowing tales of the

night of the storm, which was
previously covered in the Rockaway Times Sandy Anniversary
edition in October 2014. Olsen,
who due to multiple sclerosis
is in a wheelchair, had to evacuate her house via kayak and
DiBenedetto was helped by local hero Dylan Smith, a lifeguard
who used his surfboard to bring
his neighbors to safety. (In yet
another tragedy, Smith died just
two months after the storm in a
surfing accident in Puerto Rico).
It was a pretty amazing night,
Benedetto said. We had water flooding our basement. We
started smelling smoke, and the
next thing I know, three houses
behind us were on fire.
In the aftermath of the storm,
several houses on Beach
130th Street had burned to the
ground. On the corner of the
block the beloved restaurant
Harbor Light also turned to
cinders. But three years and
three months removed, the

My New Years resolution is to
find the bully a friend, as kind
as my mom. Maybe if the bully
has a friend or two, he wont be
so mean. To be honest, I think
the bully is so mean because
hes lonely. I am going to do my
best to convince some kids to
be friends with the bully. This
is my New Years Resolution.

The Rockaway Times
Back In The Day, At The Point!

Back in the day of the Southern Pacific Corp, the Rockaway Pacific Corp and then the
Rockaway Operating Company...Tenants leased beach lots
and built bungalows to enjoy
seashore living! But it was
stated in the lease that upon
expiration of the lease, all
structures became the property of the landlords!
To add insult to injury, Point
Life was controlled by the Rockaway Operating Company.
It took awhile, but the simmering pot of tenant anger began to boil over. The Rockaway
Point Association, The Breezy
Point Association and the
Roxbury Association joined
forces against the Rockaway
Operating Company.
One of the most hated activ-
ists in the campaign against

the operating company was
Neils Friberg, who took over
the lease of John Simmons
in 1906 and the hotel thereon. Up to and including the
war between Point Tenants
and the Operating Company
(1920), Friberg and his wife
Sophie had added about 11
bungalows on their 100' x 237'
lot, plus a pavilion and a dock.
The company had enough
of Friberg's shenanigans and
told him to vacate the property. He "outright refused"
and the matter wound up
in Queens County Supreme
Court! Friberg lost the case in
March of 1922, then an eviction proceeding started.
An appeal was immediately filed, and in August of 1924
the Appellate Division of the
Supreme Court ruled in favor
of Neils and Sophie Friberg.
The decision directed that
the Fribergs may sue the op-
erating company to recover

the value of 11 bungalows
they had built and the rents
collected by the company after taking possession.
This case was watched very
closely by lawyers and landlords up and down the east
coast of the United States. There
were many beach lot tenants
who also suffered the same fate
as the Fribergs for years now!
Magnetic
Walls

kid and had that magnetic board
and letters to play with?
Why not take those ideas into
todays world? Now you can.
Whether its a wall in the kids
room, a space over your desk or
in the kitchen to post recipes.
To start off you will need to prep
the wall by filling any holes and
making sure the surface is clean.
Then tape off the area or wall
you are going to paint.
Using Rustoleum Magnetic Paint primer apply five to six
coats of paint. It paints on just
like regular paint using a roller
and brush.
Then paint with the color of
your choice. For kids room you
may consider painting it with
chalkboard paint, making a wall
into a magnetic chalkboard.
For kitchens, it is a great idea
for the wall space between the
counter and wall cabinets. Con-

Ingredients:
4 carrots, peeled and sliced
2 large onions, halved and thinly sliced
2 pounds chicken pieces (I used
both boneless thighs and cutlets)
cup raisins
cup diced dry apricot, coarsely chopped
1 (14 ounce) can chicken broth
2 tablespoons tomato paste
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons lemon juice
3 garlic cloves, minced
1-1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1-1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Ground black pepper

Hot cooked couscous (I use

whole wheat)
Pine nuts, toasted
Fresh cilantro (optional)
Directions:
In a 5-6 quart slow cooker,
place carrots and onions.
Sprinkle chicken with teaspoon salt.
Add to cooker; top chicken
with raisins and apricots.
In a bowl, whisk broth, tomato
paste, flour, lemon juice, garlic,
cumin, ginger, cinnamon and
ground pepper.
Add to slow cooker.
Cover and cook on low heat
setting for 6-12 to 7 hours (or
on high heat setting for 3-1/2
to 4 hours).
Serve in bowls with couscous.
Sprinkle with pine nuts.
Garnish with cilantro.

Healthy Eating Is Center Stage

Some friends have been

asking me what healthy living specifically means to me.
Well, for my journey that started seven months ago, healthy
eating has been center stage.
Let me tell you about what
I ate today, which was not really a completely normal day
eating-wise, but it is fairly
representative of my healthy
living.
First things first: a cup of
coffee. Next: another cup of
coffee.
Breakfast: Steel Cut Oats
with banana and walnuts
and a pinch of Stevia, which I
cooked overnight.
Mid-afternoon: Cup of cottage cheese with chopped tomatoes,
Glass of V8. Another cup of
coffee.
Prior to dinner: Three super
lysine plus tablets. (Amino acids, immune system enhancer and to increase serotonin
levels) 1 GNC Adult Probiotic capsule with two specific
strains that may help boost
ones immune system. Also:
dropper of digestive bitters
and a teaspoon of Norwegian
Cod Liver oil.
Evening: Chickpea, string
bean and crushed tomato
curry (which I slow cooked
today) with homemade Indian Raita (yogurt, cucumber
and lots of spices and lemon
juice).
I had an amazing glass of
iced tea with dinner which I
adapted from a recipe I read
today in the NYT Style section
by Chef Jessica Koslow of the
very hot Sqirl LA, an organic
food restaurant in Cali. She
created an apple juice based
Toddy Tonic, a turmeric
based drink. I didnt want all
the sugars in apple juice so

I replaced it with blueberry
non-caffeinated tea. Again,
turmeric is the current hot
health food. Its a spice that
boosts the immune system as
well as being an anti-inflammatory. I boiled up the tea
with roasted cloves, ground
ginger, black pepper, cinnamon and the turmeric!! Real
good.
I will probably finish tonight with an apple or some
red grapes. (Usually I would
only have two meals with
the third being a protein
drink).
Bulletin: A few days after
writing this I find myself in a
hospital bed after experiencing chest pains Sunday morning. Thank God it was not a
heart attack, only pericarditis, which is a virus of the sac
that the heart is encapsulated
in. Treatment is anti- inflam-
matories ( Advil).
I am so glad I dont have to
hear that I have to lose weight
from every doctor who speaks
to me, and I am certain that
my fast recovery was helped
by my not being a fat man anymore. As my friend Glenn
commented on Facebook
to me: So.....let me get this
straight......you lose all this
weight, start eating healthy
and THEN you end up in the
hospital!?
Ha Ha. Glad I can laugh at
that!!

New Years Resolutions

My New Years resolution is

to be a better global citizen.
I want to be more thoughtful
about how I live. I want to be
more aware of how my personal life choices affect other people. People I will never know. I want to be more
thoughtful about how my life
affects the environment, effects that will be felt by future
generations.
There are so many things to
consider with every purchase
we make. Every action we
take has an effect on someone
or something somewhere.
Chaos theory says that something as small as the flutter
of a butterflys wing can ultimately cause a typhoon halfway around the world. I am
sure that every action and
decision that a human makes
has a much larger effect than
a butterfly.
I have spent the last thirty
years of my life producing a
TV show that focuses on environmental issues. So, I have
learned a lot about how purchases we make can be beneficial or harmful in the big
picture. For example, according to the American Museum
of Natural History, shrimp
farming, which is rapidly expanding, is by far the greatest
threat to the worlds mangroves - mangroves are salt
tolerant trees adapted to live
in harsh coastal conditions.
A 2012 U.N. report found
that one-fifth of the globes
mangroves have been destroyed since 1980, and
many remaining mangrove
forests are considered degraded. As much as 38 percent of that loss can be attributed to the spread of shrimp
farming, the report found.
And since healthy mangrove forests sponge up huge

amounts of carbon, killing
them contributes significantly to climate change. The Oregon State University ecologist
and mangrove expert J. Boone
Kauffman estimates farmed
shrimp has ten times the carbon footprint of beef raised in
cleared rainforest land.
Shrimp farmers also use
massive amounts of chemicals and antibiotics to keep
the overcrowded shrimp
healthy. This chemical
soup, along with enormous
quantities of organic waste,
contaminates
surrounding
freshwater and coastal waters.
The average Asian intensive shrimp farm survives
only two-to-five years before
pollution and disease force
it to shut down. Local people are left with a devastated
landscape that can no longer

support fishing, farming, or
wood gathering, and many
are forced to move away.
A new report published recently by the Associated Press
says that Burmese men, women and children are being
sold to factories in Thailand.
These are enslaved people are
being forced to peel shrimp
that ends up in the global
supply chains of major US
food stores and retailers such
as Walmart, Kroger, Whole
Foods and Petco, along with
restaurants such as Red Lobster and Olive Garden. And
the FDA barely tests farmed
shrimp as it comes into this
country.
Can I be more thoughtful
about purchasing shrimp?
Yes! There are better options. In general, wild-caught

with every purchase we make.
Food, clothing, energy, transportation each of these has
impacts! As a good global
citizen I resolve to consider
the butterfly effect of all my
actions. For me it is worth
the time and effort it takes to
make better informed choices. Choices that do no harm,
choices that perhaps make
our world, everyones world a
better place.
There are many more things
to consider. Plastics are not
easy to avoid, but I know that
44 percent of all seabird species, 22 percent of cetaceans,
all sea turtle species and a
growing list of fish species
have been documented with
plastic in or around their bodies.

think it became stronger, Olsen said. Im only speaking for
half of the block but most of
us decided to rebuild. I think
only two families decided not
to rebuild. The fire allowed
residents to create new homes
to their own specifications and
needs, especially useful for
Olsen, who said she had previously been unable to access
parts of her house due to her
illness. I was not able to use my

rounded edge, giving it the appearance of a stately castle. And
just recently the steel beams
went up at the Harbor Light site,
giving residents on the block
and around Belle Harbor something to look forward to when
the building is completed.
I think the block looks beautiful. The homes are coming out so
different, it adds a new component, Olsen said. Last summer
we had a progressive around the
world party. Six families were the
so-called hosts, and they would
dress up and bring food and drink

whole home. I was really living

in a reclining chair because I
didnt have the right home. Although very tragic I was able to
build a home with an elevator,
I was able to come and go as I
need to. I can go on my porch
and back deck. In that respect
it was a positive thing that I was
able to build a new home on my
old property specifically for my
needs.
Despite being a recent resident, DiBenedetto decided to
come back to Rockaway as well.
My wife and I designed the
house. We even gave the architect pictures of what we wanted,
DiBenedetto said. That was a big
part of [deciding to stay] for us.
For a time we thought Should
we pick up and move out of
state? Olsen said. [But] Im too
involved, born and raised in this
community. It didnt really take
very long to make the decision to
stay. I have big roots down here.
There was no way I was leaving.
The new homes now tower
over the existing houses, with
concrete foundations designed
to prevent a repeat of the massive basement flooding so many
experienced during the storm.
One of the new houses has a
pertaining to a different country.

The entire block was welcome. It
was maybe a new spin on a block
party kind of thing.
Both DiBenedetto and Rudolph
said they are optimistic about
the block and Rockaways future
in general. Im very optimistic.
The woman next to me whos rebuilding is 80, Rudolph said. In
the spring its like a tour, people
go down and look and say Lets
go see the new houses. I would
do that, too! Despite his relative
newness DiBenedetto has found
a permanent home. I got to
know my neighbors through the
experience. The new people are
happy because theyve got a new
house and home. Old neighbors
are happy because the eyesores
of the neighborhood are gone.
I enjoy living here. I hope that
things just get better for Rockaway in general. Theres a lot of
good thing happenings even further down. Rockaway should be
one of the premier places in New
York.

Is Open
Registration is underway softball season. Last year was a
for the 2016 Rockaway Lit- banner year for RLL with an intle League (RLL) baseball and crease in participation, higher
quality play (especially in girls
softball), new clinics, a fourth
consecutive district championship, and a live appearance on
ESPN. What will 2016 bring?
Registration for families is
open online (www.rockawaylittleleagueny.com) through February 29. Early Bird discounts
end January 31. A single in-person registration opportunity is
scheduled for this Saturday at
the CardSmart store, 442 Beach
129 Street. The desk will be open
from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The regular season is slated
to begin for older players on
April 4. The date for the first
Tee-Ball games and the annual
Opening Day Parade and Celebration is Saturday, April 16.
Baseball and softball action
will continue through June 30.

In the competitive divisions,
playoffs will begin on June 15.
Each year, more than 650 children compete on more than
50 teams. Every team will be
scheduled for 12 regular season
games. For the second year in
a row, the playoff tournament
will be double-elimination.
Other notable dates include
Coaches Day on Sunday, April
3; the Pitch, Hit and Run Competition on Friday, May 20 and
All-Star Friday on June 10. (All
dates are subject to change.)

An important component of
Coaches Day is a seminar from
Positive Coaching Alliance.
RLL is committed to providing
a values-driven environment
for all of our children. We hope
parents will take an active role
in teaching the right lessons.
