The Catholic Church has many followers all round the world, including not only our friends but
also our foes, belonging to which are first of all the Greek Catholic in Ukraine who come forward

Bearing common witness in the background of our awareness is YHVH, Ground of Being, who is
none other than Christ Himself, Our Father, the blessed One who has Mercy with His world; That which
is I-AM, the identity, in each particle, wave or creature. God is One; we are One.

This YHVH, God of the living, is beyond name and form, hallowed be thy name; it is That which is
when the fire of universal manifestation, fully burns itself out; it is like unto the pure white ash at the
end of a fully burned wood fire. This is not annihilation, we are not preaching nihilism here, there is
this residue after the fully burned wood fire; YHVH is perfect Good/True/Real, perfect
Intellection/Intelligence/Consciousness, perfect Happiness/Joy/Bliss, worthy of worship, untouched
by the elements of conscious experience: space-time, energy, motion, wetness, solidity.

These are but words on a paper, or letters on a computer screen; how can I be still? My mind is like
a coracle in a mid-Atlantic storm, madly pulled hither and thither by the winds of fortune and the
thought-currents of fear, thinks the one reading this.
Sri Ramana Maharshi (Bhagavan) has said: When thoughts arise stop them from developing by
enquiring, To whom is this thought coming? as soon as the thought appears. What does it matter if
many thoughts keep coming up? Enquire into their origin or find out who has the thoughts and
sooner or later the flow of thoughts will stop.
This is how self-enquiry should be practised.

When Bhagavan spoke like this he sometimes used the analogy of a besieged fort. If one
systematically closes off all the entrances to such a fort and then picks off the occupants one by one
as they try to come out, sooner or later the fort will be be empty. Bhagavan said that we should
apply these same tactics to the mind. How to go about doing this? Seal off the entrances and exits to
the mind by not reacting to rising thoughts or sense impressions. Don't let new ideas, judgements,
likes, dislikes, etc. enter the mind, and don't let rising thoughts flourish and escape your attention.
When you have sealed off the mind in this way, challenge each emerging thought as it appears by
asking, Where have you come from? or Who is the person who is having this thought? If you can
do this continuously, with full attention, new thoughts will appear momentarily and then disappear.
If you can maintain the siege for long enough, a time will come when no more thoughts arise; or if
they do, they will only be fleeting, undistracting images on the periphery of consciousness. In that
thought-free state you will begin to experience yourself as consciousness, not as mind or body.
However, if you relax your vigilance even for a few seconds and allow new thoughts to escape and
develop unchallenged, the siege will be lifted and the mind will regain some or all of its former
strength.
In a real fort the occupants need a continuous supply of food and water to hold out during a siege.
When the supplies run out, the occupants must surrender or die. In the fort of the mind the
occupants, which are thoughts, need a thinker to pay attention to them and indulge in them. If the
thinker withholds his attention from rising thoughts or challenges them before they have a chance to
develop, the thoughts will all die of starvation. You challenge them by repeatedly asking yourself
Who am I? Who is the person who is having these thoughts? If the challenge is to be effective you
must make it before the rising thought has had a chance to develop into a stream of thoughts.
Mind is only a collection of thoughts and the thinker who thinks them. The thinker is the Ithought, the primal thought which rises from the Self before all others, which identifies with all
other thoughts and says, I am this body. When you have eradicated all thoughts except for the
thinker himself by ceaseless enquiry or by refusing to give them any attention, the I-thought sinks
into the Heart and surrenders, leaving behind it only an awareness of consciousness. This surrender
will only take place when the I-thought has ceased to identify with rising thoughts. While there
are still stray thoughts which attract or evade your attention, the I-thought will always be directing
its attention outwards rather than inwards. The purpose of self-enquiry is to make the I-thought
move inwards, towards the Self. This will happen automatically as soon as you cease to be
interested in any of your rising thoughts.

Maharishi (30 December 1879 14 April 1950), named Venkataraman at birth, who lived as a realised

The shock of the fear of death drove my mind inwards and I said to myself mentally, without
actually framing the words: Now death has come; what does it mean? What is it that is dying? This
body dies. And I at once dramatised the occurrence of death. I lay with my limbs stretched out stiff
as though rigor mortis had set in and imitated a corpse so as to give greater reality to the enquiry. I
held my breath and kept my lips tightly closed so that no sound could escape, so that neither the
word I nor any other word could be uttered. Well then, I said to myself, this body is dead. It will
be carried stiff to the burning ground and there burnt and reduced to ashes.
But with the death of this body am I dead? Is the body I? It is silent and inert but I feel the full force
of my personality and even the voice of the I within me, apart from it. So I am Spirit transcending
the body. The body dies but the Spirit that transcends it cannot be touched by death. That means I
am the deathless Spirit. All this was not dull thought; it flashed through me vividly as living truth
which I perceived directly, almost without thought-process. I was something very real, the only
real thing about my present state, and all the conscious activity connected with my body was
centred on that I. From that moment onwards the I or Self focused attention on itself by a
powerful fascination. Fear of death had vanished once and for all. Absorption in the Self continued

unbroken from that time on. Other thoughts might come and go like the various notes of music, but
the I continued like the fundamental sruti note that underlies and blends with all the other notes. 1
Whether the body was engaged in talking, reading or anything else, I was still centred on I.
Previous to that crisis I had no clear perception of my Self and was not consciously attracted to it. I
felt no perceptible or direct interest in it, much less any inclination to dwell permanently in it.

After the experience recounted above, Sri Ramana Maharishi left home, travelled to
Tiruvannamalai, cast away all that he had including his clothes and sat unmoving for days on end,
absorbed in YHVH, Ground of Being. The depth of Sri Ramana Maharishi realisation of the I-AM presence
is revealed in the following account(s) recorded in Ramana Maharishi and The Path of Self Knowledge by
Arthur Osborne28:
A sadhu [renunciant] known as Seshadri Swami, who had arrived at Tiruvannamalai a few years
previously, took it on himself to look after the Brahmana Swami, as Venkataraman began to be
called, so far as any looking after was needed. This was not altogether an advantage, because
Seshadri Swami made the impression of being slightly deranged and thereby drew on himself the
persecution of schoolboys. They now extended their attentions to his protg whom they called
Little Seshadri. They began throwing stones at him, partly out of boyish cruelty, partly because
they were intrigued to see one not much older than themselves sitting like a statue and, as one of
them put it later, wanted to find out whether he was real or not.
Seshadri Swamis attempts to keep them off were not very successful; they sometimes had the
opposite effect. So the Brahmana Swami sought refuge in the Patala Lingam, an underground vault
in the thousand-pillared hall, dark and dank, where the suns rays never penetrate. It was
seldom that any human being entered; only ants, vermin and mosquitoes flourished there. They
preyed upon him until his thighs were covered with sores that ran blood and pus. To the end of his
life the marks remained. The few weeks he spent there were a descent into hell, and yet, absorbed
in the Bliss of Being, he was unmoved by the torment; it was unreal to him. A pious woman,
Ratnammal, entered the vault to take him food and besought him to leave the place and come to
her house, but he made no sign of having heard. She left a clean cloth, begging him to sit or lie on it
or use it against the insect pests, but he did not touch it. Afraid to enter the dark vault, the youthful
tormentors threw stones at its entrance or broken pots that crashed and sent splinters flying.
Seshadri Swami mounted guard but this only incited them the more. At noon one day a certain
Venkatachala Mudali approached the thousand-pillared hall and, indignant at seeing boys throwing
stones in the temple precincts, seized a stick and drove them away. On coming back he saw
Seshadri Swami emerging from the gloomy recesses of the hall. He was startled for a moment but
quickly recovered and asked Seshadri Swami whether he was hurt. No, he replied, but go and
look at the little Swami in there, and saying this he went away. Astonished, Mudali descended the
steps into the vault.
Coming from the bright daylight to the dark, he could see nothing at first; gradually, however, his
eyes grew accustomed and he made out the form of the young Swami. Aghast at what he saw, he
went and told a sadhu who was working in the nearby flower garden with a few disciples. They also
came to look. The young Swami neither moved nor spoke and seemed oblivious of their presence,
so they lifted him up bodily and carried him out.

Eventually, the absorption in YHVH, Ground of Being, Our Father, the blessed One who has Mercy
with His world reached a climax: conscious experience of rigour mortis.

When Sri Bhagavan first went to Tiruvannamalai he sometimes moved about in a state of trance, as

Koil, accompanied by Palaniswami, Vasudeva Sastri and others. He had an oil-bath there and was
nearing Tortoise Rock on the way back when a sudden physical weakness overcame him. He
described it fully afterwards.
The landscape in front of me disappeared as a bright white curtain was drawn across my vision and
shut it out. I could distinctly see the gradual process. There was a stage when I could still see a part
of the landscape clearly while the rest was covered by the advancing curtain. It was just like
drawing a slide across ones view in a stereoscope. On experiencing this I stopped walking lest I
should fall. When it cleared I walked on. When darkness and faintness came over me a second
time I leaned against a rock until it cleared.
The third time it happened I felt it safer to sit, so I sat down near the rock. Then the bright white
curtain completely shut off my vision, my head was swimming and my circulation and breathing
stopped. The skin turned a livid blue. It was the regular death hue and it got darker and darker.
Vasudeva Sastri, in fact, took me to be dead and held me in his arms and began to weep aloud and
lament my death.
I could distinctly feel his clasp and his shivering and hear his words of lamentation and understand
their meaning. I also saw the discolouration of my skin and felt the stoppage of my circulation and
breathing and the increased chilliness of the extremities of my body. My usual current of awareness
still continued in that state also. I was not in the least afraid and felt no sadness at the condition of
the body. I had sat down near the rock in my usual posture and closed my eyes and was not leaning
against the rock. The body, left without circulation or respiration, still maintained that position. This
state continued for some ten or fifteen minutes. Then a shock passed suddenly through the body
and circulation revived with enormous force, and breathing also, and the body perspired from every
pore. The colour of life reappeared on the skin. I then opened my eyes and got up and said, Lets
go. We reached Virupaksha Cave without further trouble. This was the only fit I had in which both
circulation and respiration stopped.

World leaders or others who read this Open Letter may recall this story in times of trial, recall
YHVH, Our Father the blessed One who has Mercy with His world and receive instant solace. They may
choose to practice this Who am I contemplation in memory of one who thus overcame death itself,
even as did Jesus Christ in more dramatic circumstances. It is not bodily immortality that is sought here
but That undying consciousness, freed of the ego-personality and its troubles; the discovery of Life;
YHVH, Ground of Being.

The author of this Open Letter can confirm that this experience is indeed possible. Atheists and
scientists have to answer why they have not done the experiment to check the evidence. Even as an
old fashioned festival rocket wont get the Hubble Telescope into orbit to observe/witness the far end
of the universe, it is success in isolating the I within, the near end of that external observation, that
lets one observe/witness how space-time blooms into conscious experience of Matters of Fact and
Relations of Ideas necessary for the discrimination of Truth from illusion regarding the conscious observer
which makes all evidence possible.
The achievement is a yardstick that measures those who come out short.
Those who call themselves Jewish can see for themselves if they have kept the Sabbath and know

Those who, wishing to be a Master, having discovered the Source, That from which awareness arises,
by the enquiry, Who am I, can proceed to contemplate What am I, Where am I. Having obtained
these answers, then they qualify themselves to contemplate the beatitudes described by Christ in
Matthew 5. One does not however, have to wait and do all this in sequence. A little faith is all that is
required, the kind of faith that you use when you get into your car and use the throttle and the brakes.

It was not only seekers after Truth that were drawn to him but simple people, children, even
animals. Young children from the town would climb the hill to Virupaksha Cave, sit near him, play
around him, and go back feeling happy. Squirrels and monkeys would come up to him and eat out
of his hand.
It is commonly held that progress can be made and karma worked off only during a human life;
however Sri Bhagavan has indicated that it is possible for animals also to be working off their karma.
In a conversation quoted in this chapter he said, We do not know what souls may be tenanting
these bodies and for finishing what part of their unfinished karma they may seek our company.
The animals felt his Grace. If a wild animal is cared for by people its own kind boycott it on its
return to them, but if it came from him they did not; rather they seemed to honour it. They felt the
complete absence of fear and anger in him. He was sitting on the hillside when a snake crawled
over his legs. He neither moved nor showed any alarm. A devotee asked him what it felt like to
have a snake pass over one and, laughing he replied Cool and soft. He would not have snakes
killed where he resided. We have come to their home and have no right to trouble or disturb them.
They do not molest us. And they didnt. Once his mother was frightened when a cobra
approached her. Sri Bhagavan walked towards it and it turned and went away. It passed between
two rocks and he followed it; however, the passage ended against a rock-wall and, being unable to
escape, it turned and coiled its body and looked at him. He also looked. This continued for some
minutes and then the cobra uncoiled and, feeling no more need for fear, crawled quietly away,
passing quite close to his feet.

Great Masters like Sri Ramana Maharishi and Jesus Christ come to remind us that there is another
dimension within us, where without compromise you may find Peace and Joy in your heart and
oneness with even feared natural enemies.
The most favoured of all the animal devotees of Sri Bhagavan was the cow Lakshmi. On June
17th, 1948, Lakshmi fell ill and on the morning of the 18th it seemed that her end was near. At ten
oclock Sri Bhagavan went to her. Amma (Mother), he said, you want me to be near you? He sat
down beside her and took her head on his lap. He gazed into her eyes and placed his hand on her
head as though giving her diksha (initiation) and also over her heart. Holding his cheek against hers,
he caressed her. Satisfied that her heart was pure and free from all vasanas (latent tendencies) and
centred wholly on Bhagavan, he took leave of her and went to the dining hall for lunch. Lakshmi
was conscious up to the end; her eyes were calm. At eleven-thirty she left her body, quite
peacefully. She was buried in the Ashram compound with full funeral rites, beside the graves of a
deer, a crow and a dog which Sri Bhagavan had also caused to be buried there. A square stone was
placed over her grave surmounted by a likeness of her. On the stone was engraved an epitaph that
Sri Bhagavan had written stating that she had attained Mukti (Liberation/Salvation). Devaraja
Mudaliar asked Bhagavan whether that was used as a conventional phrase, as the phrase that

someone has attained samadhi is a polite way of saying that he has died, or whether it really meant
Mukti, and Sri Bhagavan said that it meant Mukti.

These thoughts are perhaps a little unpleasant, but thou shalt not kill, not even for breakfast. Do
you think that YHVH, Ground of Being, is not just? All this war, fear and suffering is not unfair?!

The LORD, YHVH brought thee out of Egypt, freed ye from the Roman Caesar through Jesus Christ,
gave ye the freedom to worship as thou will in the United States and ye have made a prison for
yourselves governed by the ghouls of Egypt and Atlantis and eat flesh until it come out at your
nostrils29. Ye live as pickpockets, stealing gold, slaying Gods people, cursing thy brother with natural
catastrophes; blackmail, death and jungle warfare is thy daily fare; is all well with thee?
The night was dark. Sri Bhagavan had already retired to rest on the raised platform in the hall in
front of the Mothers samadhi. Four devotees were sleeping on the floor near the windows. Two of
them, Kunjuswami and Mastan, the former an attendant, heard someone outside say, There are six
persons lying down inside.
Kunju shouted out, Whos there? The thieves replied by breaking a window, apparently to frighten
those inside. Kunjuswami and Mastan got up and went to the dais where Sri Bhagavan was. The
thieves thereupon broke a window at that side, but Sri Bhagavan sat unperturbed. Kunjuswami then
left the hall by the north door, as the thieves were on the south side, and brought
Ramakrishnaswami, a devotee who was sleeping in another hut, to help them. When he opened the
door the two Ashram dogs, Jackie and Karuppan, ran out. The thieves beat them and Jackie [the
dog] and ran away while Karuppan ran back to the hall for refuge. Sri Bhagavan told the thieves
that there was very little for them to take but they were welcome to come in and take what
there was. Either considering this a trap or being too stupid to depart from routine 30, they took
no notice but continued their efforts to dislodge a window-frame so as to get in that way. (According
to the usual Indian practice, the windows had iron bars to prevent anyone getting in). Angered by
their wanton destruction, Ramakrishnaswami sought Bhagavans permission to challenge them, but
Bhagavan forbade him, saying: They have their dharma (role), we have ours. It is for us to bear
and forbear. Let us not interfere with them. Though Sri Bhagavan invited them to enter by the
door, the thieves continued their violent methods. They let off crackers at the window to give
the impression that they had firearms 31.
Again they were told to enter and take what they wanted but they only replied with threats.
Meanwhile Kunjuswami had left the hall and set out for town to get help. Ramakrishnaswami again
spoke to the thieves and told them not to make unnecessary trouble but simply to take what they
wanted. In reply they threatened to set fire to the thatched room. Sri Bhagavan told them they
should not do that but offered to go out and leave the hall to them. This was just what they wanted,
perhaps still fearing that the others might set upon them while they were at their work. Sri
Bhagavan first told Ramakrishnaswami to carry the dog, Karuppan, to a safe place in the other shed

for fear the thieves would beat it if it were left there. Then he with the three others, Mastan,
Thangavelu Pillai and Munisami, a boy who performed puja or worship at the Ashram, left by the
north door. The thieves stood at the doorway with sticks and beat them as they went out, either
hoping to disable them or to frighten them from any thought of resistance. Sri Bhagavan, receiving a
blow on the left thigh, said, If you are not satisfied you can strike the other leg also.
Ramakrishnaswami, however, got back in time to ward off further blows.

History repeats itself, turn the other cheek manifests as there is nothing to come in and take... this
is what is the only sane policy in Ukraine; there is nothing to come in and take and one must turn the
other cheek. Everyone who matters knows that Putin is not the problem.

The new President of Ukraine can convert himself to the ancient way of Truth. He can order all
Ukrainian forces under his control to disarm immediately. Then the only fighters emanating from
Kiev will be foreign mercenaries who must be publicly asked to leave.

What are self defence forces in parts of Ukraine that have had a vote to become part of Russia
defending themselves against? This is a question they have to ask themselves. They must get to
know what actually happened when Caesar fled; it is Your Excellencys duty to inform them.
They must know that there is no need to band together and take up arms, this merely delays the
inevitable, for it strengthens the hand of those sterile men who want war.
The solution to the problem in UK and Europe has already been proposed: Render unto Caesar
what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God , which Pope Benedict XVI preached at
the Lourdes in France in 2008 and again in his Christmas message of 2012.
