EN 1090-1 is a European standard for fabricated steel and aluminum load-bearing components used in structures. Beginning July 1, 2014, CE marking will be legally required to declare conformity with EN 1090-1. To obtain CE marking, manufacturers must have a certified Factory Production Control system that ensures products are developed and produced according to quality standards. The standard covers technical requirements for manufacturing, fabrication, welding, erection, and surface treatment of steel structures. Manufacturers seeking certification must undergo regular audits of their production controls to ensure all relevant manufacturing procedures meet standards.

If your company needs to demonstrate compliance with the European Standard: CE Marking will become a legal mandatory requirement after the 1st July 2014 to be able to declare conformity with the requirements of EN 1090-1. A fundamental prerequisite for the CE Marking of steel or aluminium construction firms is a certificated Factory Production Control (FPC) system, which ensures that the products have been developed, constructed, purchased, produced and assembled on the building sites in a quality assured way with regard to the respective standards and regulations. EN 1090-1 is the harmonised European Standard which has been accepted by the member States as the standard for fabricated steel and aluminium load bearing components and kits of components for use in structures. Because fabricated steel components are safety critical, the CE Marking of components is not allowed unless they have been manufactured under a FPC system assessed and certified by a suitable accreditation body that has been approved by the European Commission. EN 1090-2 provides the technical requirements for the execution (fabrication and erection) of steel structures and supports the application of EN 1090-1. The scope of EN 1090-2 covers not only the technical requirements for manufacture, e.g. fabrication and welding, but all other aspects of execution including erection and surface treatment. The steelwork contractor is required to have a documented welding quality management system (WQMS) and a nominated person(s) responsible for all welding activities i.e. Responsible Welding Coordinator (RWC). At the core of certification according to EN 1090 is regular monitoring of each plants own production controls. This involves all relevant procedures of designing and manufacturing, qualifications of the employees, the technical equipment, and the main product characteristics of the building components.
