Title of lesson: The Plural of the Nouns
Lesson Aims:
teaching Ss the plural of nouns;
teaching Ss the regular plural of nouns;
teaching Ss the exception of the regular plural of nouns.
Activity 1. Warming-up (GW; 5 min.)
Aim: Get Ss familiarised with the plural of nouns
Procedure:
a) Game. T. begins a story, Ss have to continue it using as many as plural
nouns as they can.
Ex. Every time I go abroad I take a lot of photos. Last year I visited
Activity 2. General spelling rules (10 min.)
Aim: Teach Ss the general rule of spelling the plural of nouns adding -s or
es
Procedure:
A) T. writes on blackboard the following nouns:
love loves, book books; epoch epochs;
b) Ss are asked why only -s has been added;
c) T. explains that we add only s after nouns ending in vowel including e
mute nouns ending in consonants and ch [k];
d) T. writes on blackboard the following nouns:
claSs [s] claSses; buzz [z] buzzes; box [x] boxes; church [t]
churches; brush [] brushes; judge [d] judges;
e) Ss are asked to give other examples of nouns that form the plural with -s
and -es and motivate their choice.
Activity 3. Pronunciation (5 min.)
Aim: Teach Ss to pronounce correctly the plural nouns
Procedure:
a) T writes on blackboard that -s is pronounced [z]
1) after voiced consonants: pens
2) after consonants preceded by vowel: boys, cows, plays
3) - s is pronounced [s] after voiceless consonants: cats, books>
b) Ss are asked to repeat the correct pronunciation;
c) T writes on blackboard that -es is pronounced [iz] after the sibilants [s],
[z], [t], [d], [], [];

d) Ss are asked to repeat the correct pronunciation.


Activity 4. The rule of y
Aim: teach Ss that there are some exceptions when the noun ends in y (5
min.)
Procedure:
a) T writes on blackboard: boy boys; toy toys;
b) Ss should remark that y is preceded by a vowel,
c) T. writes that all nouns ending in y preceded by a vowel add only s
d) T writes on blackboard: cry cries; spy spies;
e) Ss should remark that the y is preceded by a consonant,
f) T explains that nouns ending in y preceded by consonants change the y
into i and add es;
g) Ss are asked to give examples for the two cases.
Activity 5. Exceptions of y (5 min.)
Aim. Teach Ss the exceptions of nouns ending in y that add s after y
Procedure:
a) T writes on blackboard: Germany Germanys, why the whys of the
problem;
b) Ss should remark that the first example is a proper noun and the second
belongs to a part of speech which is not a noun.
Activity 6. General rules and exceptions of nouns ending in o (5 min.)
Aim: teach Ss the general rule and exceptions of nouns ending in o
Procedure:
a) T writes on blackboard: tomato tomatoes, potato potatoes, and explains
that this is the general rule;
b) T. writes on blackboard: 1. zoos, bamboos, 2. Eskimos, Filipinos, 3. photos,
kilos, 4. solos, tempos, and asks Ss why only s was added?
c) Ss should remark that in case 1 the o is preceded by another vowel; 2 is a
proper name; 3 is formed from abbreviation; 4 nouns of Italian origin.
Activity 7. Exercises
Aim: T to be sure that Ss have understood the plural of nouns (15 min.)
Procedure:
a) multiple choice exercise given to Ss on sheets of paper.
Which is right?
1. I saw 10 monkies/monkeys at the zoo.
2. Tom will bring another two boxes/boxs.
3. His sister has three babies/babys.
4. When I was in England last year I met four Eskimos/Eskimoes.
5. I like reading. Till now Ive read many bookes/books.
Activity 8. Homework
Aim: Ss to practise, T to check if Ss know to use the plural of nouns correctly.
