ANECDOTAL RECORDS

INTRODUCTION:

Every pupil has to be evaluated by their teacher, the teacher


should observe the student in every aspect such as academic
performance, extracurricular activities or any significant
description that will helps the student to become an all around
personality in the future. In short teacher has to record the
facts that she observed in the student routinely.

DEFINITION:

1. “It is the verbal snapshot of an incident “

2. “It is a brief description of an observed behaviour that


appear significant for evaluation purpose”

3. “It is written description of a specific incident for which a


teacher has observed “

MEANING :

1) Informed devices used by the teacher to record the


behaviour of the student as observed by him from time to time

2 ) It provides a lasting record of behaviour which may be


useful to a judgement about the student

3) It gives useful information concerning an individual

4) Teacher will note down the important happening pertaining


to the pupils for the future reference

5 ) The teacher should describes the events he observed


carefully and writes his comments , takes the signature of the
student , he will also sign and keep it into the files and will be
considered for evaluating the particular students
CHARACTERISTICS (CONTENTS) OF THE ANECDOTAL
RECORDS

• A factual description of an events , how it occurred , what


happened , when it occurred and under what
circumstances the behaviour the behaviour occurred will
be described by the observer i.e. objective description of
the pupil ,s behaviour from time to time , along with
observer ‘s comment

• Each anecdotal record should contain a record of the


single incident

• The incident recorded should be one i.e. . considered to be


significant to the pupil ‘s growth and development

PURPOSE :

• To furnish the multiplicity of the evidence needed for


the good cumulative record

• To substitute for vague generalization about the student


specific exact description of the behaviour

• To stimulate teacher to look for information i.e.


pertinent in helping each student realised good self
adjustment

• To understand individual is basic personality pattern


and his relation in different situation

• Teacher is able to understand the pupil in a realistic


manner

• It provides an opportunity for healthy pupil teacher


relationship
• It can be maintained in the area of behaviour that
cannot be evaluated by the other systematic method

• Help the student to improves their behavioural as it is a


direct feedback of an entire observed incident , the
student can analysed his behaviour better

• Useful and supplementing and validity observation


made by other means

• Can be used by the student for self appraisal and self


assessment

HOW TO USED ANECDOTAL RECORD EFFECTIVELY :

1. Specify the behaviour to be assessed in advance

2. Limit the observation to those categories or qualities

3. Record the enough of the situation to decrease the


subjectivity

4. Avoid to much dependency on memory by recording its


time to time .It will increase it objectivity , validity and
reliability

5. A single specific incident has to be recorded ( positive


and negative aspect ) and coincides both in making
inference

6. Relates anecdotal records directly to the clinical


objectivity

ITEMS IN THE ANECDOTAL RECORDS

1. Name of the student , class and school , date of


observation

2. Setting background of the incident

3. Signature of the observer


4. Interpretation of the behaviour

5. Recommendation concerning the behaviour

ADVANTAGES

• Supplement and validate of other structural instrument

• Provision of insight into total behavioural incident

• Used of formative feedback

• Economical and easy to develop

DISADVANTAGES:

1. If it is carelessly recorded the purpose will not be


fulfilled

2. Subjectivity

3. Lack of standardization

4. Difficulty in scoring

5. Time consuming

6. Limited application

SUMMARY:

A factual description of an events , how it occurred ,


what happened , when it occurred and under what

time , along with observer ‘s comment that cannot be
evaluated by the other systematic method
CONCLUSION:

Anecdotal record is essential for determining the


characteristics of the student as well as judgement of the
student for determining higher attainment and progression of
the student to the higher levels
