1. How long will the CITI completion report be valid?

CITI completion reports are valid for 3 years 1 day (so if you completed
CITI on 01/02/2013 that is the effective date and it is valid through
01/01/2016).
2. Who is required to complete CITI training?

Principal investigators (PIs)

Co-investigators (Co-PIs)
Data collectors and others who will interact or intervene with
participants for research
Those who will have access to identifiable participant information
Instructors who are completing class projects in their classrooms (see
the Procedure for Class Projects for more information).

3. How do I register and complete CITI training?

(see also FAQ #7 below about which training to complete in CITI)
Go to the CITI website: www.citiprogram.org
Click Register at the top of the page

Select UNF as the participating institution on the select an institution

page and leave the other fields blank then continue to step 2
Include your name and email address then continue to step 3
Create your username, password, and security question then
continue to step 4
Enter your demographic information then continue to step 5
Indicate whether you want continuing education credits for
completing this CITI training (there is a cost associated with this so
most choose not to obtain continuing education credits) then continue
to step 6
Provide your institutional information then continue to step 7
Select the option for the Human Subject Research [HSR] courses. You
will need to either complete the Group 2 Social Behavioral Researcher
Investigators and Key Personnel course or the Group 1 Biomedical
Research Investigators and Key Personnel course. No other courses
are required (please note that the responsible conduct of research
course does not fulfill the CITI training requirement).
Check your email for an email from CITI (check your spam folder if
you dont see it in your inbox). Click on the link in that CITI email.
Log into CITI and complete the CITI training.
Save a copy of your CITI completion report as a PDF. Please keep a
copy of this CITI completion report for your records and submit it with
your IRB submissions to show that you have completed the required
CITI training.

4. Will the UNF IRB accept my CITI completion report that I received

from another organization?

As long as the CITI training is still valid it may be accepted by the UNF
IRB. However, if the CITI training is vastly different from the UNF CITI
training then the UNF IRB may not accept it. Additionally, once that
external CITI training from a non-UNF institution expires, you will be
asked to complete the UNF CITI training in most cases.
5. Will the UNF IRB accept other training in lieu of CITI training?
In most cases no, CITI training will be required of all UNF affiliates
involved in the research (see FAQ #2 above about who is required to
complete CITI training and FAQ #6 below about unaffiliated personnel).
6. If someone is unaffiliated with UNF (i.e., not a UNF student, not UNF

staff, not UNF faculty) but otherwise meets the qualifications for
completing CITI, does that unaffiliated individual need to complete
the UNF CITI training?

Individuals who are not affiliated with UNF are not usually required to
complete the UNF CITI training. However, the IRB can always require
individuals to complete CITI training if deemed necessary. If you are
collaborating with an individual who is not affiliated with UNF and will
be a PI, Co-PI, person interacting or intervening with participants, or a
person who will have access to identifiable information about
participants, please submit a brief description of that persons training in
the protection of human subjects and the IRB will determine if CITI is
required. This information will need to be submitted with your other IRB
submission documents. If the person has not been trained in the
protection of human subjects, please explain how you will train the
unaffiliated individual in the important issues related to research with
human subjects (e.g., voluntary nature of participation, principles of the
Belmont Report, protecting vulnerable participants, confidentiality of
data, secure data storage).
7. Which CITI curriculum do I need to complete for the UNF IRB?

Either the Group 1 Biomedical Research Investigators and Key

Personnel CITI training or the Group 2 Social Behavioral Researcher
Investigators and Key Personnel CITI training. Only one of these two
courses are required. It is up to you or your faculty advisor to
determine which of these courses is most appropriate for your
discipline.
Please do not complete the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)
training (in question 3 on the selecting curriculum page in CITI).
These courses do not contain the necessary elements of training that
the IRB requires for UNF researchers. The RCR course is an optional
course that can be used to supplement the required training but it
cannot replace it.
For the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, please see the
separate guidance about that IACUC CITI training.
Unless otherwise informed, you are not required to complete the
Conflict of Interest course.

8. How do I save a copy of my CITI completion report as a PDF?

Make sure you have an up to date version of Adobe Acrobat (reader,
standard, or pro). You can download the most recent version of Adobe
reader here.
After you have completed the CITI training, go to the Main Menu on
the CITI website (directions: log into CITI if you are not already and
click Main Menu on the left-hand side near the top of the page) and
look at your University of North Florida Courses (Click the blue bar
that says University of North Florida Courses)

Click Print Report for the CITI completion report you would like to
save. This will bring you to a preview of the CITI completion report.
Use your mouse to hover over the bottom of the first page of the
preview (i.e., move your mouse cursor over to the bottom of the page
but do not click, just let it hover there). You may have to move your
mouse around a little but eventually you should be able to see some
options by where your mouse is hovering. The options differ slightly
but you should see a floppy disk icon (e.g.,
,
). If you are
having difficulty with this, please contact a research integrity
administrator (620-2455 or irb@unf.edu) for assistance.
Click on the floppy disk icon and save a copy of the PDF to your
computer in a place you can easily find it.

9. How long does CITI training take to complete?

Initial CITI training can take up to 8 or more hours to complete but you
will have the option to save your progress and complete it at a later date
to avoid fatigue. CITI completion reports are valid for three years and
then must be renewed. If you have already completed CITI training once,
you can complete the CITI refresher training when it comes time to renew
(this is available automatically, no set up is needed) and the refresher
course is about as long as the original training.
10. I forgot my CITI Username and/or password, what do I do?
Click the Forgot Username or Password option on the CITI website (can
be found under the login entry boxes) or contact a research integrity
administrator (620-2455 or irb@unf.edu) for assistance. Research
integrity administrators do not have access to your password but they
can reset your password for you if needed.
11. How do I get my CITI training into IRBNet?
There are two possible methods you can use:
1. Add the CITI completion report as a simple attachment
a) Save a copy of your CITI completion report to your computer
(see #8 above)
b) After you have created a new project in IRBNet, log into IRBNet
and go to the Designer page for that project
c) Click the Add New Document
d) Select Training/Certification as the document type, choose the
file from the saved place on your computer, then click Attach.

Note: The problem with this method is that you will have to
submit your CITI training for each project you submit. Each
project must stand by itself and the CITI training will only be
visible for this one project and not future projects.
2. Upload and submit your CITI training on your IRBNet User Profile
a) Save a copy of your CITI completion report to your computer
(see #8 above)
b) Log into IRBNet
c) Click User Profile on the top right hand side of
the page
d) Scroll down to the training & credentials section,
e) Click Add a New Training & Credentials Record,
f) Fill out the information about your training (i.e., select the type
of training as the Document Type, add the effective date and
the expiration date, add description if necessary)
g) Click Choose File
h) Select the CITI completion report you saved to your computer
then click Attach
i) Scroll down until you see the training you just added to your
User Profile
j) Click Submit to send it to the IRB to approve
Note: Using this second method will ensure that the CITI training
is visible for all projects for which you have access. You will only
need to adjust your CITI training on your IRBNet User Profile once
your current CITI training expires.
