n January 18, the members of MOOD

(Molding OUR Outstanding Daughters)
answered the national call to service to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,
by coordinating a Day of Service, with the support from
community businesses and organizations. With the help
of over 20 volunteers from the southern New Jersey area,
these young ladies served lunch to more than 40 people
in the Spirit and Truth Ministries soup kitchen; read to
and crafted dream catchers with children at the Vineland
Public Library; created blankets and Get Well Soon
cards for the sick and shut in, as well as, sorted and hung
clothing and accessories in the First United Methodist
Churchs clothes closet.
Dr. King believed in a nation of freedom and justice for
all, and encouraged all people to live up to the purpose
and potential of America by applying the principles of
nonviolence and service to others, to make this world a
better place to livecreating the Beloved Community.
MLK Day of Service is a day that empowers individuals,
strengthens communities, bridges barriers, and moves us
closer to Dr. Kings vision of a Beloved Community.
Kudos to these young community leaders. Dr. King
would be very proud.

the organization and to learn how you can help.

pic, best ever, amazing, a blast, hilarious,

creative, unique these are just a few of
the adjectives used by participants and
audience members who were a part of Friday
nights Voice of Vineland lip-sync contest to
describe the fundraiser at Merighis Savoy Inn.
The fundraiser was so successful, first, because
it was so much fun; second, because it brought
the community together through a spirit of collaboration amongst numerous local organizations; and third, because it raised thousands of
dollars for six very worthy non-profit groups in
the greater Vineland area.
The fundraising will continue as the Voice
of Vineland (VoV) will be rebroadcast on
Cumberland Countys Channel Comcast 22
over the course of the next two months. Just as
had been the case during the event on Friday,
the public will be able to watch the contest and
vote for their favorite acts by pledging donations, however small or large, to crown a
Peoples Choice Award winner. The first
airings of the event on Comcast 22 will be on
Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and on

Elizabeth (Betty) Sheridan, R.N., M.A., chief

operating officer of Inspira Medical Center Elmer
and Vineland has been listed on the Beckers
Hospital Review annual list of Women Hospital
and Health System Leaders to Know.
Beckers listed 130 female executives at hospitals and health systems across the nation, who
have established themselves as successful leaders within the ever-changing healthcare industry.
Bettys energy and passion for health care is
extraordinary, said John DiAngelo, president
and CEO of Inspira Health Network. During her
time with Inspira she has helped to transform
our organization into the regions leading health care network and has proven herself as a dedicated leader to our physicians and staff.
Sheridan has been the chief operating officer of Inspira Medical Center Vineland
for more than a decade. In 2014, her role expanded to include oversight of Inspira
Medical Center Elmer, which was recently named by Beckers as number one of
seven hospitals in New Jersey with the cleanest rooms reported by patients.
During her tenure with the network, Inspira Medical Centers Elmer, Vineland and
Health Center Bridgeton have been designated two consecutive times by the
American Nurse Credentialing Center as Magnet facilities for excellence in nursing, and became the first hospitals in New Jersey to international certification for
quality care through DNV Healthcare. Sheridan has also been recognized by The
Organization of Nurse Executives of New Jersey as an exemplary leader.
According to Beckers, the leaders on the list were selected based on editorial
judgment and discretion of members of the Becker's editorial team, who evaluated
leaders for their management and leadership skills and career accomplishments
and also read through and considered a record number of nominations.

Jose Ledezma, Jr. has been named Youth

and Adult Healthy Living director at the YMCA
of Vineland. His areas of responsibility include
youth sports, fitness facilities and staff, and specific activities such as Pickleball. He is a
Vineland resident whose own life experiences
give him insights into this important position.
As a self-described chubby adolescent,
Ledezma lacked assurance as a child until discovering exercise and its benefits. He said,
Exercise gave me confidence in life. It also
made me want to help others reach their fitness
or other goals.
The new director has worked in the fitness
industry as a personal trainer, supervisor, instructor, and coach. He recently completed an internship at the YMCA as part of fulfilling his Bachelor of Arts/Health
and Exercise Science degree requirements at Rowan University.
He explained, Starting as an intern at the YMCA gave me a chance to become
close to many of the members. I enjoy talking with them, getting to know them,
and seeing their growth. I like this interaction and the idea that I can help them to
attain their objectives.
Ledezma holds an Associates degree from Cumberland County College as well
as numerous certifications, including AAAI Personal Training, American Red Cross
First Aid, and American Red Cross CPR/AED. His hobbies include walking, exercising, and coaching. Appreciative of his new position at the YMCA, the 26-year-old
said, I thank my parents for their hard work that has given me the opportunity to
have an education and a career.

Jacob Kell Crowned Mr. Vineland

Jacob Kell was crowned Mr. Vineland in the

Kell, the son of Michael and Kimberly Kell, was
one of 12 candidates selected by senior girls to vie

use, singing a medley of Elton John songs as he
accompanied himself on the piano.
Coincidentally, Kells twin sister, Jaclyn, is the
reigning Miss Vineland. The two are pictured
together at right.
The new Mr. Vineland plans to attend Belmont
University in Nashville, Tennessee to study Audio
Engineering with a minor in Music Business.
Kell received his crown and sash from the reigning Mr. Vineland, Donovan Bennett.
First runner-up was Devon Mattie. Second runner-up was Jeff Martine. Third
runner-up was Tristan Rhubart, and fourth was Thomas Forkin. The other contestants were Michael Velazquez, Robert Blakely, Anthony Mollica, Nico Gonzalez and
Dominic Ciancaglini.
Mayor Ruben Bermudez was thanked for providing without charge the tuxedos
worn by the contestants each year of the pageant.

Cranes Badge of
Courage
This writer, who helped shape American literature of
the 20th century, was a native of New Jersey.

tephen Cranes novel The Red

Badge of Courage has been a part
of high school reading lists for
decades, yet it offers no evidence
of its authors origins throughout its Civil
War narrative. The same is true of Cranes
first novel, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets,
which is set in the 19th century Bowery
section of New York or, for that matter, his
famous fatalistic short story The Open
Boat. The prose and poetry he produced
during his lifetime might lead a reader to
believe that he hailed from New York or
even the New England region, but the reality is that this writer, who helped shape
American literature of the 20th century
was a New Jersey native.
Born in Newark, New Jersey on
November 1, 1871, six years after the close
of the Civil War, Crane was the 14th child
of a Methodist minister and a clergymans
daughter. One of his ancestors served as
delegate of New Jersey to the First
Continental Congress while another is
rumored to have founded Elizabethtown,
New Jersey. According to online sources,
the family history in this country can be
traced back to Jaspar Crane, who emigrated from England and helped establish New
Haven Colony.
Cranes education included two years at
Pennington Seminary, a boarding school
located a few miles north of Trenton,
before he transferred to Claverack College,
an institution described as a quasi-military school. It was here that Crane discovered how his skills in military exercises
and baseball far outweighed his ability in
the classroom. His experiences at
Claverack, however, would serve him well
in the writing of The Red Badge of Courage.
Convinced by family members that he
should transfer to Lafayette College in
Pennsylvania, Crane looked toward a
career in mining engineering. But he had
already had a taste of what a writing
career would be like, creating short stories
and working summers with his brother
Townley at a news bureau in New Jersey.
When he transferred to Syracuse
University after only a semester at
Lafayette, he spent most of his time playing baseball and experimenting with writ-

ing techniques. The publication of one of

his short stories in the New York Tribune
ended his college career and returned him
to his home state as a freelance reporter.
Living just outside Paterson in 1891,
Crane would make daily treks into New
York City to examine and write about the
impoverished Bowery district of
Manhattan. The reports he filed for a series
of New York newspapers inspired him to
write a fictional work about the inhabitants.
The result was Maggie: A Girl of the Streets,
a novel privately published by Crane in 1893
at a cost of over $800. The book painted a
realistic portrait of life in the Bowery at the
time but, unlike their 20th century counterparts, late 19th century readers werent prepared to engage in this type of literature.
The novel failed to sell.
The following year, however, would
reverse the authors fortunes when The
Red Badge of Courage, a psychological look
at war from the perspective of the battlefield, caught the attention of readers
nationwide in serialized form. Crane may
have never served in combat, but his portrayal of fear, survival and commitment
has been praised for its accuracy by those
who have, earning the book an esteemed
position in American Literature and signaling the next direction in writing.
Crane never repeated his success with
The Red Badge of Courage but continued
working on short stories and poetry while
freelancing as a reporter. In 1896, he was
hired as a war correspondent to cover the
impending war in Cuba. He sailed from
Jacksonville on New Years Eve aboard the
Commodore. Within days, the ship would
sink, leaving its passengers and crew in
lifeboats. Newspaper accounts have captured the details of the sinking, but Cranes
The Open Boat tells of how its author
shared a dinghy with two crew members
and the ships Captain for a day-and-a-half.
When they attempt to bring the lifeboat

Matilda Landis to Get Face

Lift in 2016

{ 6 } the grapevine | JANUARY 27, 2016

A life-sized portrait of Matilda T.

Landis (the sister of Vinelands founder)
has been temporarily removed from

exhibit at the Vineland Historical and

Antiquarian Society museum to undergo
conservation by noted art conservator
Steven B. Erisoty of Philadelphia. The
painting is especially significant because it
was created by Richard Worsen Meade
Landis, the third son of Vinelands
founder Charles K. Landis.
Erisoty, who previously worked as a
conservator at the Philadelphia Museum
of Art, has been in private practice at his
Chestnut Hill studio since 1985. He will
repair some flaking at the bottom of the
painting and clean the entire canvas
before it is returned to the Society.
Its especially important to us to conserve this painting because it is the only
known portrait of Matilda Landis, said
Ruth A. Shropshire, president of the
Societys Board of Trustees. Were hoping
that area residents will consider donating
to this project to help Matilda get a face
lift.
All pledges are welcome, no matter
what the amount. Shropshire noted that

such subscriptions from the community

often helped the Society in the past.
Thats actually how the current museum was funded, she said. It was built
through the support of local residents.
The painting is dated 1894 and was
probably copied from a photograph of
Matilda. Although Richard and his aunt
originally got along well, their relationship grew strained over the years.
Both Richard and his younger brother,
James, were disinherited by their father
after he died in 1900, and Matilda became
Charles primary heir and executor of his
will. After they unsuccessfully tried to
contest the will, both Richard and James
left Vineland.
James eventually moved to California,
where he was joined by his mother, Clara.
Richard died of kidney disease in
Philadelphia at 39 years of age.
Donors who contribute to the paintings preservation will be recognized for
their contributions and invited to the
unveiling once Matilda is returned to her
home in the Landis Room of the museum.
For further information or to make a
contribution, please call 856-691-1111 or email vinelandhistory@gmail.com.

Career Day at Vineland High

In an effort to build stronger partnerships between the business community of
Vineland and our public school system,

High School.
Purpose: To provide information and
education about possible career paths
and/or information about industries and
job possibilities. This is not a job fair,
but a chance for our future workforce to
learn about the local business community.
Free for Chamber member businesses
to participate. A table and chairs for each
partner will be provided. Please bring your
own tablecloth. Refreshments and lunch
will also be served to our partners. It recommended that two representatives be
there so tables are never left unattended.
Registration is required. You can call
the GVCC at 856-691-7400. Space is limited. Once you are registered, additional
event details will be provided.

Missing Bible: Please Return

If Found
On Saturday, January 16, my Bible was
stolen out of my vehicle and I believe it
was discarded. If you found it, please
return it to the Vineland Police
Department located at 111 North 6th
Street in Vineland, NJ. It is a King James
Bible inside a black carrying case (approximately 8 1/2 x 11 inches), with an Eagle
on the front and many personal items
inside (poems and letters). My name is on
the front cover of the Bible in gold letters
(Robin Lynn C. Kirkpatrick). My Bible is
very sentimental to me and I would greatly appreciate it if the founder returned it
to the Vineland Police Department as soon
as possible.
Thank you and God bless.

Delsea DECA Chooses Service Project

Each year, the students of Delsea
DECA commit to participate in a New
Jersey community service project.
Before the school year even started,
Delsea DECA students Jordan
Dobzanski and Shannon Waller stepped
up to take on the NJDECA campaign
coined"Packages for Patriots." While
other students were enjoying the last
days of summer, Dobzanski and Waller
were sitting in their marketing classroom planning their promotional campaign. Their goal was to have their message out to the school community by the first day of school.
Through showcase displays, fliers, raffles, and word-of-mouth, the students
sent their message ablaze through Delsea High School on opening day: "Support
our troops"
Their goal was to raise awareness and funding for the local
organization:Operation Shoebox- a non-profit, New Jerseybasedorganizationthat ships packages toservice men and women overseas
(opshoeboxnj.org). Through their promotional activities and the participation of
their entire Delsea DECA chapter, Dobzanski and Waller were able to raise over
$600, which was their goal to reach by the end of December. Dobzanski and
Waller are proud to contribute to such a worthy cause, and grateful for the support of their Delsea DECA chapter.
For more information on the community activities of Delsea High School
DECA, contact efischer@delsearegional.us
DECA seniors Jordan Dobzanski (l) and Shannon Waller (r), are displaying one of their
coin drop cans available for contributions in the Delsea Crusader Cafe.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5
Get the Led Out. Landis Theater, 830

I Downtown Vineland
{ BY RUSSELL SWANSON, EXEC. DIRECTOR, VDID / MAINSTREET VINELAND }

February
Lineup
Cash Assaults, a Merchant Meet-and-Greet and Fourth
Friday fun.

{ 12 } the grapevine | JANUARY 27, 2016

s Im writing this, a blizzard is

raging outside, but things really
heat up downtown in February.
No, it wont necessarily be the
weather, but it will be something else thatll
make you want to come to Landis Avenue.
First up, well be holding our second
cash assaultthis time on Wednesday,
February 3, at Spataros Pizza and Italian
Specialties, in the Landis MarketPlace
building at 631 E. Landis Avenue. From 11
a.m. to 7 p.m. you can enjoy some of Frank
Spataros tasty Italian foodspizza and a
variety of other dishes. Those of you who
have been there before know how great the
food is, so come out and enjoy.
We kicked off our cash assaults last
week at Tropical Latin Restaurant and
were going to do them on a monthly basis.
Its a way to have you discover our downtown businesses and, at the same time, to
help bring businesses to our merchants.
The following evening, on Thursday,
February 4, well be having our second
Merchant Meet-and-Greet. It will take
place from 5:30 to 7 p.m., at Friends and
Family Diner (formerly Landis Diner), at
601 E. Landis Avenue. This is a networking
event for downtown merchants to socialize,
get to know each other, and hear the latest
news from Main Street Vineland. We had
over 40 people at first Merchant Meet-andGreet, at our Main Street Vineland office,
and this despite very inclement weather.
We encourage all downtown businesses to

come out and enjoy this networking opportunity. Well be having these every other
month on the first Thursday.
Well be having an extra cash assault on
Friday, February 26, as our Fourth Friday
activity. It will take place at Q-Ball Billiards,
133 W. Landis Avenue. Owner Jose Garcia
likes to think of Q-Ball Billiards as an oldschool pool hall for people who like to play
poola place that also has a lot of history
with pool legends who have played there.
From noon to 1 a.m., pay just $4.50 per
hour to play. Hell have hot dogs and other
snacks for sale, as well.
Even more is planned for February and
youll be reading about that shortly.
Also, in a quick peek ahead, Vineland
will have the honor of hosting one of Main
Street New Jerseys Downtown
Revitalization and Management Institutes
(DRMI) event. This will be on Wednesday,
April 27 and will bring representatives to
our downtown from Main Street districts
throughout the state. Well be hosting the
daylong workshop at Grant Plaza, 619 E.
Landis Avenue. Main Street New Jersey
has these workshops four times a year
throughout the state and were really proud
to be hosting this one. Ill save more information about this for next week. I

Zonta Club of Cumberland County Celebrates

Women in Aviation
Colonel Barbara Ann Logan (third
from left) was guest speaker for the
Zonta Club of Cumberland Countys
annual Amelia Earhart Meeting, which
features women in aviation. The meeting
was held at the Millville Army Air Field
Museum at Millville Airport on January
4, 2016. Col. Logan, a longtime resident
of Millville, told the inspiring story of her
life, which included careers in aviation, medicine and the military. After three years
in the Army Reserves, Logan went on to serve 25 years in the United States Air
Force and ultimately became the first female full colonel Medical Squadron
Commander of the 177th Fighter Wing, New Jersey Air National Guard, based at
the Atlantic City International Airport. Along the way, Logan earned the coveted
Flight Nurse Wings at the School of Aerospace Medicine. She had her pilots
license at a young age, flew as a nurse at Millville Airport and later flew gliders.
Col. Logan has numerous military medals, biographical information, and her dress
uniform on display at the museum. Logan was recognized by Rosalie Forcinito,
Zonta president, left, and Zonta members (left to right) Cindy Hennessy, Nellie
DAlessandro, Betsy Perugini, Barbara Sheftall, and Carol Iaconelli. Zonta is an
international service organization of women in business and the professions who
are dedicated to improving the status of women worldwide. Amelia Earhart was
one of its founding members. For more information about Zonta visit Zonta.org, or

{ 14 } the grapevine | JANUARY 27, 2016

remember years ago my mom taking

out of the cupboard the big doublecan of Chun King Chow Mein with
the crunchy noodles in the top can.
She heated it up and served it to us as if it
were a gift from the gods. It was the treat of
the week!
Back then, that was the only way to get
Chinese food until the Jade Restaurant
opened up on West Landis Avenue next to
Garden State Florist. I thought it was so
exotic! We mostly picked up takeouts and
got the usual unimaginative fare of chicken
chow-mein or fried rice.
Now, there are as many Chinese restaurants in town as there are pizza parlors!
Great stuff, but in these past few years, my
sister Linda and I were looking for something more exotic, something more flavorful.
One of our favorite places is the Viet
Bistro in the Cumberland Mall. A pretty little place that serves great fish curries and
hearty noodle dishes along with other
unique items. The food can be as hot and
spicy as you like it and is so different from
standard Chinese takeout food. You can literally taste the layering of flavors in each
dish. Now, this is truly the food of the gods!
We go every couple of weeks and sometimes even make sure to take home a takeout for the next day.
This is not meant to disparage the standard Chinese restaurants in the area, however, because there is some great food out
there. Every once in a while, when I am in
the mood for a real crispy duck dinner, I
order Hunan Duck from Ocean Garden
Restaurant on Lincoln Avenue in Vineland.
It is one of the best duck dishes I have ever
eaten and the portion is enough for two
people.
I also like the new Chinese restaurant,
Good Flavor, across the street from the
Wawa at Main and Landis. I had a great
Pork Lo Mein the other night and asked for
light sauce and it was just delicious.
After all of that holiday food, something
exotic is a welcome change.
Here is an easy little recipe for one of
my favorite dishes and a great family meal.

Curried Beef With Sweet Potatoes

1 lb rib-eye steak, trimmed and cut
into 2-inch cubes, seasoned with salt
and pepper
4 tbsp vegetable oil

Bagel University, 1406 S. Main Rd.,

Vineland, 691-0909. Breakfast and lunch
spot offering sandwiches named for colleges near and far.

1 cinnamon stick
8 whole cloves
1 cup onion, thinly sliced
1 bay leaf
3 minced garlic cloves
2 tbsp fresh ginger root, minced
1 tbps curry powder
1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
2 cups sweet potatoes, peeled and
sliced into thick half-moons
1 can unsweetened coconut milk (14
ounces)
1 cup fresh string beans
1 can diced tomatoes in juice,
drained (14.5 ounces)
3/4 cup red bell pepper, seeded and
diced
Juice of a 1/2 lime
1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
Sear seasoned steak on all sides in 2 tablespoons of oil in large saute pan over mediumhigh heat (do not cook all the way through),
transfer to a plate.
Fry cinnamon stick and cloves in the
same pan with remaining 2 tablespoons oil
until cinnamon unfurls and cloves swell,
about 2 minutes. Remove spices and discard.
Add onions and bay leaf, saute until onion
begins to brown, stirring occasionally, about
8-10 minutes. Add garlic, ginger, curry powder, and pepper flakes; saute until fragrant,
about 1 minute. Stir in sweet potatoes,
coconut milk, and tomatoes; cover, reduce
heat to medium and simmer 10 minutes, or
until potatoes are tender, not mushy. Add
seared steak and its juices, beans and bell
pepper; simmer to heat through, about 5
minutes. Serve over jasmine rice. Finish with
lime juice and chopper cilantro. I

VOICE OF VLD
(Continued from cover)

{ 16 } the grapevine | JANUARY 27, 2016

Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights at

9 p.m.
The fundraiser was the brainchild of Ken
Dondero and Hugh McCaffery, two longtime Vineland businessmen and community
activists. The pair came up with the concept, which married the formats of the hit
TV shows The Voice and Lip Sync
Battle. They recruited a dynamic team of
committee members, all of whom came up
with their own contributions for improving
on the original concept developed by
Dondero and McCaffery. The committee
members, or perpetrators as they referred
to themselves, included Tim Chew, Julie
and Ken Dondero, Betty and Gary Galloway,
Jody Hirata, Gail Marino, Hugh McCaffrey,
Tom Merighi, Dave Schad, Sherry Soutiere
and George and Ryan Steinbronn.
Ken Dondero reflected on the origin of
the events concept: The inspiration for
the show came from Hugh McCaffrey, he
said. We were standing in line for lunch
at Rotary back in May or June talking
about potential fundraisers for Rotary and
the YMCA. Someone had suggested
another roast, like we had done a few
years ago. Hugh pitched this [lip sync content] idea to me and it sounded like it
could be a blast. We also thought that this
would be an opportunity to help some
other charities and pool the resources of
the various committee members to
accomplish something new and different
in our area. So we decided to ask some
folks we knew, [all of whom] had a great
sense of humor and might want to give
this a go. That committee meshed very
well together to say the least.
According to McCaffery, one of the
keys to the events success was that nothing like this had been done before in this
community. He pointed out recent
roasts of Gary Galloway (2013 YMCA
fundraiser) and Gary Simmerman (last
years Bridgeton Rotary and Chamber of
Commerce fundraiser) as major successes,
but said that yet another roast would not
have been nearly as much fun as those
events had been.

In my mind it was important to do

something different, said
McCaffery. People were worn down by
typical fundraisers and we needed to inject
new life into whatever we decided to do.
McCaffery recalled telling Dondero
about his idea of replicating the popular
show The Voice as a fundraiser. Ken
listened and I explained that I thought it
would be fun and could be successful if
we incorporate a like-minded group of
people, McCaffery continued. Ken
bounced the idea off a few others and,
honestly, most were confused on how it
would work, but as we all discussed it
further it started to take shape.
Ken took the ball and ran with it by
organizing a committeemostly from the
Vineland Rotary and the YMCA, since the
initial effort was to help both those organizations. As we developed the idea, we
realized that we could help other nonprofit organizations as well, and that a
collaborative effort would be beneficial
for our community.
McCaffery said that it was important to
the committee that the VoV plan would
not require tapping the resources of the
benefitting charities, since they are always
taxed to run fundraising efforts.
The theme of our group, he said, was
that our community is constantly being
painted with a downtrodden label and that
we needed to show those outside of
Cumberland County that our community
can come together in a positive way.
The committee decided to incorporate
local Cumberland County-area community bankers as judges, since they were very
involved in efforts to help local non-profits already. Each banker/judge was asked
to pick a local charity that they would like
to represent. The judges for the event
were Dave Hanrahan from Capital Bank,
Gail Marino from Bay Atlantic Federal
Credit Union, Dave Hemple from Century
Savings Bank, and Kathy Valla from
Newfield National Bank.
After selecting the judges, the committee then brainstormed who would be good
as performers. We wanted it to be people
who represented our community and
incorporated as many different segments
of the population as possible, said

The Winning Act: The Bee Gees
The Winning Team: Team Century... Featuring The Bee Gees, Lady Gaga and
Tony Bennett, and Bobby Darin... and judge Dave Hemple!
Congratulations to all the acts, sponsors and organizers!
McCaffery. When you look at those
involved, you are just impressed by their
willingness to show their human [fun]
side, no matter what position of authority
they hold.
The names of the performers in each
act are listed in the box above.
Dondero recounted the committees top
three goals for an event like this: 1) Get
the people in our community together for
a night of fun and laughs. 2) Raise awareness for the charities associated with the
event. 3) Try and raise some money for
those charities, said Dondero. He added
that the group knew the event would be a
good time because of what the committee
meetings were like. The committee meetings were off-the-chart fun... the sponsors
were so generous, and the community support was beyond belief. The performers
and judges made that night just so much
fun for all who attended.
As the first performers took the stage
on Friday night (January 22, 2016), the
first few snowflakes of the Blizzard of
2016 began to fall. By the end of the
night, several inches of snow already had
accumulated. But the attendees had
already blanketed the events beneficiaries
with generous donations in support of the
acts that performed. At press time, the
VoV committee was reviewing the totals
received from sponsorships, ticket sales
and bidding during the event, as well as
total expenses, to determine the total net
proceeds. They anticipate that the net
profit should eclipse $20,000, and that
total will be divvied up to each charity.
That doesnt take into account the
amount that will be raised as the public
bids for the Peoples Choice Award winner over the course of the next two months
as the program airs repeatedly on
Cumberland Countys Channel Comcast
22. The event will also be available to view
anytime, anywhere on SNJToday.com starting Friday night, January 29. The public
will be able to bid on their favorite act(s)

electronically or by sending in a check to

Voice of Vineland, P.O. Box 7, Vineland, NJ
08362. Checks should be made payable to
Voice of Vineland and list the act you are
bidding for on the subject line of the check.
Alternatively, bids can be placed online at
https://events.helpusbuild.org/events/168.
It was very gratifying to see the
excitement and the positive results generated by the event, said McCaffery. The
performers were outstanding and they
engaged the attendees who responded
enthusiastically with donations to benefit
our area charities.
As much fun as the event was,
McCaffery, Dondero and the other committee members kept in mind the dire
needs of the groups that will ultimately
benefit. What was truly remarkable is
that on a cold, snowy night, while we
were raising funds and awareness for their
organization, Code Blues volunteers were
out in the streets helping those in need,
said McCaffery. I
