Identity Theft Suspect Arrested

On April 7, 2010 Detective Brian Brown arrested Morris Compton age 46 and charged him with
several felony charges stemming from Morris using someone else’s identity to withdraw money from the
victim’s bank account.

The investigation began on March 30, 2010 after the lead Fraud Investigator for Regions Bank
contacted the Slidell Police Department in reference to an investigation into someone using a fraudulent
Mississippi Driver’s License to withdraw money from an account. The Fraud Investigator advised that on
February 16th, 19th, 24th and March 5th a black male entered the bank located at 1253 Gause Blvd. and advised
the teller that he was in town and needed to withdraw money from his account. Each time, the black male
gave the teller the same story and used a Mississippi Driver’s License as proof of who he was. The black
male used a different teller during each transaction. After getting a total of over $3300 dollars from the
account the black male did not return. It was at this time that the bank was able to contact the rightful owner
of the account who advised that his wallet was stolen in Oxford, MS and someone was withdrawing money
from his account. It was also determined that the rightful owner was an elderly white male. The bank’s
Fraud Investigator also learned that a subject by the name of Morris Compton had been arrested in New
Orleans while trying to do the same thing. The Fraud Investigator then made photos of the suspect in Slidell,
from the video surveillance film and gave them to Detective Brown.

Detective Brown then compared the photo with Compton’s real Driver’s License photo and positively
identified him as the perpetrator. Detective Brown then had warrants issued for the arrest of Morris Compton.
Detective Brown located Compton at his home and arrested him on the outstanding warrants.

The wallet was reported stolen on November 14th, 2009 to the Ole Miss Police Department in Oxford,
MS. The victim advised that he was the victim of a pick pocketing and that there were two other victims.
Detectives with Hinds County Mississippi Sheriff’s Office were also investigating several pick pocketing
thefts where the perpetrators were thin black males that were using the stolen identification to withdraw
money from the victim’s bank accounts. In each case the suspects created a false identification using the
victims name and the perpetrator’s picture and withdrew money from the victim’s bank account.

The investigation is continuing with the assistance of Slidell Police Detective Robert Chadwick III, who is
assigned to the United States Secret Service Task Force, which assists in these types of investigations.
