Course Title: Survey of Economics

Program: Master of Business Administration

Course Description:
This course introduces economic theory and practice, specifically the economic system
affecting the economy as a whole. It includes international and national policy and
decision-making. The course also introduces the student to the effect this system has
on business and individuals, especially in the making of decisions. The foundations of
economic reasoning and central key terms, laws and concepts of economic analysis
and understanding are components of this course. (1 credit hour)

Goals:
Students will become familiar with the Macroeconomics perspective and those who
directly influence it on a daily basis. The integration of the external investor point of
view with the internal management orientation is evidenced by the goal of economics:
To make those decisions and engage in those activities that will maximize the overall
valuation of the firm for the benefit of the stockholders.

In addition, this course will attempt to:

 Provide students with an understanding of financial concepts, theories and


practices.
 Identify and develop management skills needed for problem identification,
planning, leading, and decision making.
 Explain that goal of maximizing profits is not the same as maximizing
shareholder wealth.
 Provide students with information about structure and Functions of the Financial
Markets how a company’s ability to raise funds is influenced by its financial
performance and corporate behavior.
 Reemphasize the impact that institutional investors have on publicly owned
companies.
 Examine the globalization of the capital markets and the worldwide pool of capital
available to many companies.
Student Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this course students will be able to:

 Define Gross Domestic Product, Market Demand and Supply.


 Discuss fiscal policy, unemployment rate, and federal budgeting.
 Comprehend why nations trade and how they trade.
 Justify the macroeconomic effects on an economy.
 Examine issues relating to demand, supply, fiscal policy, federal budgets, and
national debt.
 Analyze the arguments for and against the regulation of trade and the tools and
institutions of trade policy.
 Examine current trade issues and the problems of economic integration.

Course Assignments
This course is divided into 4 lessons. Lessons may include the following assignments:
• Tests (multiple-choice questions, T/F questions, and short essays)
• Discussion Questions (short essays)

The Mid – Term Exam will encompass review of the course materials up to but not
limited to Lesson 2.

The Final Exam will encompass a comprehensive review of the course materials
(multiple choice and short essay format)

Course participation for this course is essential to enable the student to apply the
knowledge and skills listed in the course learning objectives.

Technical Requirements
Online students are required to have a computer, e-mail and Internet access to enroll in
this course. This course is delivered via online instruction. All materials are delivered via
the Internet.

Attendance
Attendance to physical classrooms, virtual classrooms or forming study groups is not
required. As part of CMU’s mission, we provide students with the opportunity to receive
instruction anywhere and at any time via our delivery methods of print or online learning
modules.
