Regardless of secured funds and ongoing efforts for the construction of a transitional homeless shelter in Strathmore, the towns building code
requirements necessary to transform the Harvest
Healing Centre Church into an overnight facility
are prompting a high-priced impediment.
Strathmores local politicians allocated $40,000
towards the projects capital costs on Dec. 16, to
aid in upgrades and modifications pertinent to classify for the necessary insurance. Despite the green
light on the monetary front funds which were
delivered and are currently sitting in a separate
account construction is at a standstill without a
development permit which is contingent on building codes being observed. John Hilton-OBrien, the
president of the projects non-profit society Strathmore Overnight Shelter (SOS), which is in the process of coming to fruition, was made aware of the
hiccup on Jan. 12, that the proposal of combining
a church and a shelter under the same roof would
require a sprinkler system installation a solution
involving an estimated $100,000 price-tag.
Were looking to see if we can get someone
to help with the sprinkler system, said HiltonOBrien. Since were putting a church and a shelter together under the same roof we need to have
a big sprinkler system. Those can be expensive. We
dont have any solid figures yet.
Although the society is hopeful of attracting
either a sprinkler system donation or additional
monetary contributions, other options include
renting a house or moving another building onto
the property. However, Hilton-OBrien is aware
that both options come with challenges, stating a
rental would draw the homeless population into
residential areas and possibly raise concerns in the
neighbourhood. Purchasing a house that is being
moved off of someones land and then relocated
the Harvest Healing Centre Churchs property
could also cost upwards of $30,000 due to transportation costs.
The transitional shelter aims to house those
without overnight accommodations while providing a meal the next morning. To qualify for the
insurance needed to provide overnight living quarters, the building is in need of upgrades including
the installation of showers and added washrooms.
With Strathmores freezing winter temperatures
and a downturn in the Alberta economy, council
acknowledged the demand for the project when
providing financial aid. While those in need of
such services are often invisible within the community, the extent of rural Albertas homelessness
has attracted much attention and concern from the
government and various researchers.

Donalda Ledene: A communitys gem

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

When Donalda Ledene took to the
stage during the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2015 Alberta 55
Plus Summer Games, the crowd in the
stands erupted with thunderous cheers
and applause, trumpeting approval for
the local volunteer that far exceeded
the acknowledgement given to other
individuals around. The recognition, it
turns out, was a direct reflection of 31
years of commitment and dedication to
the community, its events, and youths
- efforts that were recently rewarded
with the 2015 Stars of Alberta Volunteer
Awards certificate of recognition.
Raised in Vulcan, Ledene was strongly influenced by her parents and grandparents, and therefore began volunteering at an early age. What started out
as group projects through the United
Church quickly turned into leading
youth camps, getting involved with
explorer groups, and later instituting
the Leos club at the Strathmore High
School; a junior Lions Club.
I think because my parents and my
grandparents were volunteers I grew
up in a world where you participated
in your community, Ledene said. I had
always lived in a small rural community
and its the kind of place where its always someone needing help or projects
needing people to do things. My model
was that you get involved and you participate and its just been a natural follow through.
Ledene studied education with a major in home economics at the University
of Alberta, but it wasnt until she moved
to Brooks that she met her husband.
The family now with two children
relocated to Strathmore in 1984, where
the couple purchased a drycleaner and
coin laundry business. But Ledene soon
received a job offer teaching at the high
school where she remained teaching
home economics, accounting and acting as a guidance counsellor, until her
retirement in 2009. While she spent her
time getting involved in school projects and activities and volunteering her
time with some of Strathmores service
groups, Ledene, who referred to herself
as having always been a mother hen,
always actively tried to get the youths
involved.
To work with the young people is to
try and be a role model for them and
that volunteering is something for them
to consider in their future lives, she
said. These things die if people dont
encourage other people to continue
doing it. The initial background behind

starting the Leo Club was to give high

school students a group to be a part of
and be volunteers.
Then, a year after her husband competed at the Alberta 55 Plus Summer
Games hosted in Fairview, Ledene answered a notice posted by the town to
serve on a bid committee for a chance
to host the games in 2015. Eager to take
on a new project, Ledene played a contributing part in creating a successful
bid, and shortly after accepted the position as chairperson of the committee
a position that exhausted countless volunteer hours over two years, required
the creation of a 17-member volunteer
board of directors as well as hiring paid
positions, and act as a liaison between
the board and the town to accomplish
fundraising goals. The project, which
she said was the largest one in her volunteer history, moved Councillor Bob
Sobol to submit a letter to Alberta Culture and Tourism to nominate Ledene
for a yearly Alberta Volunteer award.
While the nomination was unsuccessful, she was awarded with a letter of
recognition.
Shes well known in our community
and is a respected and loved individual, read Councillor Bob Sobol from the
letter he submitted to Alberta Culture
and Tourism.
She is quite simply my favourite volunteer of all time. She understands that
being a volunteer means giving your
all: commitment, dedication, expertise, and professionalism for the task at
hand. Its Donalda Ledene that is immediately thought of when the following
phrase gets uttered, volunteers dont
get paid not because theyre worthless
but because theyre priceless.
Although she continues the volunteer work with her church, which never
waivered while she organized the 2015
event, Ledene said she is taking a step
back currently and re-evaluating what
projects to take on next. Touched by
the friendships and ripple effects left
behind from the Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games, Ledene was awestruck by
the letter of recognition.
I was very humbled to be nominated
and very honoured and I really feel
that this nomination, yes I was the one
that was nominated, but Im really just
more a representative of that whole
group who did a wonderful job to bring
an event to the community for the first
time, she said.
And I just thank the community for
giving us this opportunity and supporting the whole project, because without
their support it would not have looked
the way it did. It was a good event.

Shelter in need
of help
Continued from Page 1
A research study conducted by University of Calgary PHD students Jeanette
Waegemakers Schiff and Alina Turner,
Rural Alberta Homelessness, examined
the issue in 20 rural communities with
populations under 25,000. While the
research shows that data is difficult to
collect due to the problem being hidden in smaller communities, the definition includes couch surfing, staying
with friends and family, overcrowded
conditions, living in trailers not suited
for human habitation and those living
in precarious housing situations, often
involving seniors. Such conditions have
also been observed in Strathmore.
You dont step over people in rural
communities as you would in Calgary
or Edmonton where the majority of the
absolute homeless population would
be, said Turner of Turner Research and
Strategy Inc.
Thats the main finding, that it
doesnt matter whether were North,
South, East, West, large, small its prevalent across Alberta. Theres kind of a
juggling with it so is it a local issue, is
it a provincial issue, or is it a national
issue? Theres funding for initiatives to
address that, its just that the funding is
not necessarily systematic across communities. The seven cities in Alberta get
the funds right now for homelessness,
which is fine because thats where the
majority of the issue is, but that doesnt
mean the rest of Alberta doesnt have an
issue as well.
According to the findings, there are
33 womens shelters in Alberta communities, 15 of which are outside the main
cities. In terms of homeless shelters,
Strathmores would be one of the few.
As many residents continue to struggle
to make ends meet, Turner believes the
economic tumble may become beneficial for Albertans.
I havent heard of any community
doing well in this situation unfortunately, but what I think will happen because
theres less migration from outside of
Alberta into our province for opportunities, it puts less strain on the housing
markets, she said.
Interestingly, at least in Calgary
when we look at a study that looks at
shelter use and economic downturn, we
see shelter use go down in economic
downturns. In some ways its good but
of course youre getting into the other
side of the downturn, which is the income side. So just because you might
have access to these housing units
doesnt mean you can put food on the
table either.
Strathmore-based churches have seen
an influx of people asking for help over
the last few months, and are working
diligently to work through governance
issues, creating the society and board,
and investigating their options to have
the shelter up and running as quickly as
possible. Hilton-OBrien estimated that
with the donation of a sprinkler system,
the shelter could be operational within
a month.

Thought for
the Week
~

You will find as

you look back
upon your life that
the moments when
you have really
lived, are the moments when you
have done things
in a spirit of love.
H. Drummond

it just a few months ago. It is

quite simply about petty provincialism and extortion.
This is not how a first world
country works. Before confederation, a lumber producer in Ontario (Upper Canada) would face
myriad trade barriers in getting
his products even to Nova Scotia. The colonial governments of
Upper and Lower Canada, Nova
Scotia and New Brunswick came
together to found our confederation largely for the purposes of
free trade; that is, that Canadian
provinces could move products
across each others borders without impediment.
Under our constitution, the
provinces are invested with
significant independence over
areas of their own jurisdiction,
but inter-provincial trade falls
clearly under the federal governments powers.
In 2015, politicians in British Columbia and especially
Quebec are attempting to rewrite this important part of the
constitution not through formal
amendment, but extortion.
Since just 2007, Quebec has
received $73.9 billion in Equalization transfer payments, paid
for in large part by Alberta taxpayers and our energy industry.
The myopic demands of
Coderre make plain that he is
happy to accept Albertas oil
money, but not Albertas oil.
Canada imports $26 billion
worth of oil from foreign producers every year, most of it
from cruel dictatorships with
little to no environmental stan-

dards whatsoever.
Energy East would move unprocessed oil from Alberta
which lacks further refining
capacity to Quebec and New
Brunswick, which have excess
refining capacity. This would allow Eastern Canada to buy its
oil right here at home, provide
badly needed jobs in Atlantic
Canada, and provide desperately needed access to international
markets for Western Canada.
This is a nation-building project on par with the Canadian
Pacific Railway and the TransCanada Highway. The biggest
difference is that it wont cost a
penny of taxpayers money.
The proposed pipeline largely
exists already, and merely requires upgrading to convert it
from gas to oil. That upgrading
would make the pipeline even
safer than it already is as it passes through Montreal.
Alberta has world-leading
environmental standards that
are just not recognized by Hollywood activists and hard-left
political parties at home. Albertas environmental problem has
been one mostly of image, not
substance.
Piling onto an energy industry
already battered by low global
oil prices and an unnecessary
royalty review, Albertas NDP
imposed a massive new $3 billion a year carbon tax, with the
promise that it would buy Alberta social license for pipelines.
It hasnt.
When Ontarios auto industrys last ran into trouble, the

federal government bailed them

out to the tune of $3.5 billion.
With Quebecs Bombardier in
trouble, the provincial government recently bailed it out with
$1 billion, and is demanding another $1 billion from the federal
government.
Alberta does not want or need
bailouts. Alberta does need increased transfer payments or to
collect Equalization. What we
need are partners. Partners that
will help create jobs and grow
the economy for all Canadians.
Good Canadians want each
other to succeed and we dont
define our success relative to the
failure of others. We should continue to be helpful, contributing
members of the Canadian family, but if leaders in some parts of
our country act as Coderre has
done, then we must stand up for
ourselves.
It is the federal governments
constitutional responsibility to
ensure that national infrastructure projects like pipelines
are allowed to be built if the National Energy Board agrees that
they meet the criteria laid out in
legislation.
Dialogue and cooperation is
the best path forward, but Alberta must stop giving credence to
the petty lords of confederation
who subvert the constitution
that this country was built on.

Open house regarding former Anglican Church

The Western District Historical Society

To the Editor
Alberta finance minister
Joe Ceci has announced that
the planned child tax benefits
will still take place. That is a
relief because children cannot be put on hold, even during economic downturn.
Beverley Smith,
Calgary

To the Editor
We have been advised by the Town of Strathmore that they are in the process of organizing an open house regarding the proposal to designate the
former Anglican Church on its present site as a Municipal Historic Resource.
The date and place of the Open House is at the Strathmore Civic Centre on
March 1 from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m.
The Western District Historical Society is looking forward to presenting
the possibilities of such a designation and is hopeful that all interested parties will attend and openly participate.
While the Jan. 22 Times article was comprehensive, the WDHS has significant additional information pertinent to the situation.
The Society looks forward to answering any questions at the Open House,
and residents can submit letters to wdhsociety@gmail.com.

Congregation in need of own worship space

To the Editor
As a long term member of St. Michaels and All Angels church in Strathmore, it is with profound sadness that
I write this letter in response to the recent reporting of the discussions between the parish representatives,
the Wheatland and District Historical society and town council. As has been reported by Rev. Beveridge and
our rectors warden, the primary goal of St. Michaels and All Angels membership has been to find the means
to rebuild our worship space. This endeavor began over 15 years ago with significant fund raising initiatives.
The process has been slow but we have kept our vision. Closing the little church behind the Legion was not
a decision easily undertaken. Relocation to Hope Covenant church was a big adjustment, but the congregation
was determined to continue to maintain their presence in the community, and to share worship as we have
always done in the Anglican tradition.
We are a small congregation and we want to contribute as much to our home community of Strathmore
as much as we have in the past. But we need our own worship space. Much discussion and prayer has gone
into the decision to sell the property that the church building and rectory currently sit on. It is confusing to
an Anglican in this parish what really is driving some of the so-called stakeholders. It is my heartfelt wish this
conflict can be settled soon amicably.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~Arthur and Gladys Yerex

JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
Relatives of the Yerex family name have been
traced back to 1793, when a William Yerex served
with the United Empire Loyalists, prior to The Civil War in America. Arts father Samuel James Yerex
was born in Minden, Ont. in 1865, and his mother,
Annie Olsen, was born in Norway in 1878, and
immigrated to Minnesota in 1908, before moving to Bellingham, Wash. where she worked as a
housemaid.
She met Samuel
Yerex
here, and
they were married
in 1911. This marriage produced three
daughters, and their
son Arthur born on
Nov. 16, 1916 at La
Connor, near Anacortes Island, Washington State. Samuel
moved his family to
the Gull Lake area
of Central Alberta
in 1918, and their
youngest son Henry
was born here in
1918. They moved
to Joffre in 1923
where Art started
school. After Samuel had a stroke in
1927, his brother Ed
moved them first to
Okotoks, then to the Manchester area of Calgary,
where Art attended Parkhill School for Grades 5
and 6, then Rideau Park School for Grade 7.
Of note here is the fact that when they moved
to the small farm in the Manchester district, they
took with them two cows, two horses, a hay rake,
a mower and a plow. Dad had a stroke in May
1928, which proved fatal soon after, so it was up
to Art to work as a farm labourer, earning income
to support the family. To ensure that Art returned
to school in the fall of 1928, his mother sold all
the farm equipment! He did leave school after
Grade 8 and his first job was digging holes, so
that trees could be planted. Then he got a job in a
box factory, 10 hours a day, at nine cents per hour,
waxing the inside of butter boxes!
He joined the Canadian Army in April 1931 and
served with the 91st Field Battery until Dec 1936.
He attended a Full Gospel church in Calgary in
1937, then attended bible school in Grenfell, Sask.
in 1938/1939, before moving to Craigmyle, Alta.
in April, where he worked as an auto mechanic
for Norman McRae at Craigmyle Motors.
On Dec. 20, 1939 Art married Normans daughter, Reta McRae (born 1923), and this marriage
produced a son Darcy. They adopted a daughter
Retalee, and there are now eight grand-children
and 11 great- grandchildren.
Following Art and Retas wedding they moved
to the Fundamental Bible School in Port Coquitlam, B.C. before becoming a teacher at Miller
Memorial Bible Institute, located 67 kms S.E. of

Swift Current, Sask. and where he taught for the

next 10 years. In 1958, Art and Reta moved their
family from Pambrun, Sask. to Surrey, B.C. where
he spent the next two years as pastor at Langley Evangelical Free Church, before becoming an
agent for Mutual Life of Canada for two years.
In 1963, Art joined Modern Building Movers in
New Westminster, B.C. and in 1966, formed Apex
Industrial Movers, which became known as the
incredible movers because nothing was too heavy
or large that they couldnt move. Oversize and
overweight loads that are normally unable to be
moved by road or
rail could be moved
with ease by APEX,
with their specialized equipment. In
November 1978, after three years of
careful planning and
almost $1M spent on
specially designed
equipment,
APEX
delivered four 220
ton Hydro Electric
Turbine
Runners
(32 ft in diameter
and 19 ft high) to
B.C.Hydros Peace
Canyon
Project.
These turbines had
been manufactured
in Russia. The 1,300
km route from Vancouver to Northern
B.C. included transportation by barge from Vancouver 400 miles
north to Kamano, 110 miles south of Prince Rupert, B.C. then on a specially built 150 ft long
trailer towed by a special truck, equipped with
170 wheels and two driving cabs, across lakes,
rivers, and two mountain ranges. Using logging
roads, it took two months of skillful transport
maneuvering to reach the W.A.C. Bennett Dam!
Other moves included a 160 ft high 600 ton container crane at St John, N.B. harbour without dismantling!
Art, now President and CEO of the company, retired in 1980, after spending almost 15 years there,
and retired with Reta. They moved to Strathmore
in 1993, then following a long battle with cancer
Reta passed away in 1997.
In February 2000, Art married Gladys Klassen
whom he had first met when he was teaching at
Miller Memorial Bible Institute in Sask. She was
born just north of Swift Current, and worked as
a nurses aide at the local hospital. She attended
Miller Memorial for three years before graduating
in 1954. Then went to India for five years as a missionary, where she devloped Rheumatoid Arthritis
that now affects her entire body.
Art has been an avid golfer all his life, and still
plays a round or two per week at Oxbow Golf
Club. He originally held papers with The Evangelical Free Church of America, and following Retas
passing in 1997, became Pastor of Visitations with
Strathmore Alliance Church until 2002.
A long life well lived!

Abrahams Plate serves Strathmore

SABRINA KOOISTRA
Times Junior Contributor

Harvest Healing Centre Church, located in Strathmore with a mission to
serve, opened the soup-sandwich ministry Abrahams Plate, on Jan. 2nd of
this year.
The goal of this project is to serve
people in the inter-Strathmore area
who have been forced into homelessness or are suffering from general financial trouble.
From noon to 1 p.m. on Saturdays,
soup and sandwiches are served in the
foyer of the church. The bread that is
served with the lunches is from the
Harvest Healing bread program which
has served an average of 50-75 families
each week.
The eventual goal is to be serving
up to 40 people per day, separate of

the bread and frozen meal project, and

currently, the message about the soup
kitchen is spreading.
The outreach, though designed for
those in need, is open to anyone, and
anyone seeking fellowship is encouraged to congregate in the building.
The ultimate goal of Abrahams Plate
is to reach beyond the church to become a community effort, and Strathmore has already jumped to the challenge.
The soup kitchen was part of the
original vision of building this building ... we had a benefactor who basically supplied everything so that the
kitchen could ultimately be used as a
community kitchen [or] soup kitchen,
said Susan Ruzek, Abrahams Plate
overseer.
The community has proven active in
supporting individuals who have been

for the widows and orphans.
REAL - relational (part of
the churchs mission): to let
people know that God loves
them said Pastor Elizabeth
Karp of Harvest Healing
Church.
Ruzek, who has witnessed
the generosity of people in
Strathmore, concluded, this
is the beauty; people are excited in this town about the
soup kitchen and the shelter
so theyre really coming out
and supporting us, which is
just awesome.
The grand opening of
Abrahams Plate is scheduled for Feb. 27 and will
showcase the work and impact of Abrahams Plate. Everyone is welcome.

Gas leak at Smileys

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Restaurant staff at Strathmores Smileys Restaurant
and Lounge ended their
shift with an adrenaline rush
on Jan. 23, when a vehicle
crashed into the gas line outside the building causing the
business to shut down for
hours and emergency services to tend to the scene.
Six employees were evacuated sometime after 5:30
p.m., seconds after witnesses
said a truck failed to hit the
breaks. The employees were
allowed back into the establishment at approximately 9
p.m.
Restaurant owner Amine
Alame was at his home when
he received the call about the
accident and rushed back to
his establishment located on
Ridge Rd. to await emergency services.
Instantly, as soon as that
happened we called 911 and
evacuated the building right
away, said Alame.
Somebody hit the gas line
and broke it wide open so
we had to shut down and
evacuate, and a few hours
later it was fixed and back to

business.
According to ATCO Gas
the vehicle ran into the gas
meter resulting in a small
gas leak. ATCO Gas crews
isolated the leak, shut off the
gas valve, and began repairs.
Our crews went in to
make sure that the building
was safe and that there was
no gas accumulations, which
was the case, and proceeded
to complete the repair and
shortly thereafter had the
gas turned back on to the
restaurant, said Mike Shaw,
vice president Calgary regional operations.
Its something we do deal
with from time to time and
so the fire department and
our guys are prepared to
handle that and I think everybody including the fire
department handled it really
well. There was no real risk
to the public.
Strathmore RCMP, the
Strathmore Fire Department,
and ATCO Gas tended to
the scene. After numerous
attempts, the Strathmore
RCMP were unavailable for
comment. According to the
Strathmore Fire Department,
nobody was injured as a result of the incident.

NEWS from:
Lions Regional Outdoor Rink Committee

The Lions Regional Outdoor Rink Committee

(Strathmore & District Agricultural Society)
would like to announce:

Nearly 30 teachers gathered at Golden Hills

School Division on Jan. 20, to learn about the
Lego Mindstorms EV3 Education Edition robots, of which 13 will be made available to their
schools.

Robotics 101 for GHSD teachers

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Nearly 30 teachers engaged in a
convivial and inventive learning experience outside their classrooms last
week, when Golden Hills School Division (GHSD) organized an interactive information training session to
introduce the educators to robotic
technology now available for their
students learning enhancement.
The school division recently purchased 13 robots, Lego Mindstorms
EV3 Education Edition, from Spectrum Nasco, which is a company that
distributes the technology through a
Lego division known as Lego Education.
The kits, which come equipped
with the plastic units, electronic components, an intelligent brick, sensors and three motors, provide its
user with a hands-on and minds-on
approach for physical and mechanical learning and understanding coding and programming concepts. For
GHSD, bringing such technology into
the classrooms is essential for the future success of its students.
When were looking at collaboration, critical thinking, and problem
solving, these are all skills our students would need for 21st century learning, and I think that at any
time that you can work together as a
group to solve something hands on is
very beneficial to our students, said
GHSD Director of Student Assessment and Curriculum Support Jeff
Grimsdale.
In the afternoon, we had Jeff Wilson the [executive director] of Brilliant Labs and he was talking about
coding and robotics and artificial intelligence and how its going to be
the new way. We have to prepare our
students for this and this is just one of
the steps towards getting there.
Golden Hills School Division will
be housing the 13 kits at their Instructional Material Centre - on loan
for the 25 schools in its division.
Typically ranging in size from 20 cm
by 15 cm, the models retail at $415
per unit. With the help of Spectrum
Nascos robotics sales consultant Jeff
Warner teachers received a crash
course on how to operate the robots
on Jan. 20. Having seen the positive
effects on childrens day-to-day learning through the act of programming,
coding, and interacting with the machines, Warner a teacher himself

said education in Alberta is embracing the approach faster than most

other Canadian province.
Theres a strong movement that
is gaining momentum which really
sees the value in teaching children
to program as an educational tool
certainly robotics is an extremely
popular form because what youre
programming is an actual physical
machine so theres a very interactive
element to it, Warner said.
I really want to open peoples
minds that there is a very effective
fundamental math and science learning that goes on while student are
working with the robots. I found
that traditionally people see these as
a computer science or a technology
tool but I think until people really
put it into play and meet with someone like me, who really knows math
and science education, its amazing
the kinds of fundamental skills that
it teaches.
The company sold 1,300 kits in Alberta last year, most often to school
divisions or camps. According to Warner the First Lego League Competition raised the profile of robotics in
Alberta, along with the support of numerous industrial companies to promote the advancements in the field.
While GHSD will have the robots readily available, three of their
schools already took initiative and
purchased their own models.
When those schools start growing
those programs they purchase them
for themselves, Grimsdale said. Its
initial to get the spark going. The
interest has been growing. We had
pockets of it happening in our school
division so we just wanted to share it
with the other schools.

Rosebud director, student and graduates perform cancer story

of Sarah Pharis, now 36, who blogged about her own cancer.
Her response inspired her friend and theatre arts professor,
Ingrid De Sanctis, to write the play.
Because De Sanctis knows Pharis so well, she was able to
write a play that convincingly portrays the human experience with cancer.
I really appreciate the honesty, he said. I felt like these
people were really real. I felt like it wasnt shying away from
the tough things.
And despite its potentially dark subject matter, Sarah and
the Dinosaur affirms life.
Its life-affirming in the sense that you can go through
trials but it doesnt have to stop you from this, from living
a full life, he said. (Sarah) hasnt really been living before
this. She has this bucket list of things to do, but she hasnt
been doing it. She hasnt been living. At one point, she says
cancers not a gift, its a catapult. It sends us further ... It
forces us to live.
The play is also very funny, he said.

Mark Lewandowski of Rosebud, a graduate of Rosebud
School of the Arts, directs the play Sarah and the Dinosaur
for Calgarys Fire Exit Theatre, Feb. 3-7.
Seven other cast and crew members have also been students at Rosebud School of the Arts. Geordie Cowan plays
Dinosaur. Alysa Glenn, John Moerschbacher, Alix Cowman,
Diana-Marie Stolz and Sienna Holden are also in the cast.
Naomi Esau is Stage Manager.
Natalie Buckley plays Sarah, and Chanakya Mukherjee is
her boyfriend, Charlie. Kiki Secord plays Sarahs sister.
Sarah and the Dinosaur is the story of a 26-year-old kindergarten teacher who has eye cancer that has now metastasized to her liver.
The unique approach of this is that she ends up visualizing this cancer as a dinosaur that follows her around, Lewandowski said.
This story is fiction, but it originated in the true experience

Caleb Gordon, a Rosebud School

one-man show House, at Birds and

House, by Daniel McIvor, is about
a man named Victor, whos struggling
with basically everything that life has
thrown at him, Gordon said. If youve
ever been in that place of being angry
at the world and righteously so ... this
is definitely the show for you.
Its also for anyone whos bored with
where they are in life, he said, and for
everyone whos looking for a show
thats real.
Gordon chose House as his Final
Project because hes been where Victor is, he said, angry with the world,
and asking the same questions. But his
story and Victors didnt end there.
The answer is so much more than I
could ever believe, he said. It funnels
all of the anger and the sadness that
Ive experienced into something thats
hopeful ... there is hope through the
darkest times.
Producing this play has brought both
hope and joy.

Rosebud musician inspires students final project

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER

Kaitlyn Sloboda, a fourth-year student at Rosebud School
of the Arts (RSA), is writing her final project, Take My Hand,
based on the music of RSA graduate Travis Friesen.
Sloboda, who performed in Rosebud Theatres Wind in the
Willows, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Treasure
Island, will perform Take My Hand in Rosebuds Akokiniskway Gallery, Feb. 5-7.
The story of Take My Hand began to take shape when
Friesen asked Sloboda to play the piano for his upcoming
album, and played for her what hed written.
He started playing and his heart was so forward. I couldnt
really escape that there was so much story behind each song
... I was just totally compelled, she said. From that came the
idea of a church and the idea of a young woman walking in,
a quiet church where we dont know if were quite welcome
or not.
As Sloboda worked with director Deanne Bertsch, dramaturg Kelsey Krogman and music director Paul Zacharias,
those ideas grew into Take My Hand, in which a young woman named Tess (played by Sloboda) gets stranded in a church
during a snowstorm.

when they were young, before Tess ran away from
her problems. Five years later, shes back, theyre
snowbound together in the church, and music
gives them a way to communicate what they cant
say in words.
Sloboda hopes Take My Hand will teach what
she herself has learned, and her character Tess
is learning to face
their fears.
In managing the
multiple tasks of
writing,
producing and performing, there were
times, I was like, I
dont want to do it
anymore, she said.
Fearing that its too
much to take on, or
its asking too much
of me ... and then the
play just becomes so
much more relevant
in my life.
Am I going to

Is fear telling me to

Because I dont want
to live in fear.

Council debates Canadian Badlands

prepared to engage in a four-month
tourism visioning process to determine
Strathmores niche, assist in creating
a Destination Marketing Organization (DMO), and participate in some
of Strathmores initiatives such as the
Strathmore Stampede, CRIR, visitor information centres, council workshops,
the historical society and downtown
revitalization. Tuckers, whos only been
the executive director for 16 months,
said one of the difficulties within the
organization is keeping communication
active with all members, and therefore
rely on the communities for feedback
and direction.
Strathmore is sort of a clear and
obvious member to have since its the
gateway from Calgary into the region,
and we also feel that there is a lot of
strength to be gained by working together, said Tucker.
Regardless of what expectations
might have been in the past, thats really not my job and Im hoping the job of
the council is to create the best possible
future for the citizens of Strathmore. I
really want to work with Strathmore,
want to help the community grow in its
own understanding of where its tourism future might be. We just have so
many ways that we can work together and were just keeping our fingers
crossed.
Tucker added that while its important to learn from the past, he feels its
more important to move forward. According to the organization, Strathmore
has benefited from last years conference by an estimated value of $160,000
it brought to the town, local businesses
received subsidizes for certain events,
and as one of only five communities
with adequate capacity to host the
event, there is likelihood it will be hosted here again. Furthermore, Canadian
Badlands offered to pay for 50 per cent
of the welcome signs.
It seemed to me that $6,000 was a
very small amount to pay for such a
significant contribution, said Councillor Denise Peterson. While they may
not have been what we expected in
the past, neither were we what they
perhaps needed. So its a new day and
we can move forward in a corporation
with 63 other communities that belong
to Canadian Badlands, and I think well
be well served.

The request to approve the requisition came back before council on Jan.
27, after the Strathmore Times went to
print. Although the Canadian Badlands
made many promises, at the time of
the Jan. 13 meeting Councillor Blokland was still not convinced when he
said: They have said a lot of things in
the last five years, and I havent seen
anything develop other than the conference we had in town last year.

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Less than impressed with failed
pledges made by Canadas largest municipal partnership in the past to promote and increase town involvement,
some local officials remain resolute
against a membership renewal, convinced it could mean throwing good
money after bad. However, answers
to many of councils previously raised
concerns and questions regarding the
Canadian Badlands level of involvement will be brought back to council
on Jan. 27 for discussion and decision.
The Canadian Badlands, a municipal
partnership consisting of 63 communities, sent an invoice to the Town of
Strathmore for the 2016 annual shareholder levy totalling $6,423 assuring
the continuation of the membership at
$0.50 per capita based on the population provided by the 2012 Municipal
Affairs population list.
When council was informed of the
matter of the bill and membership renewal on Dec. 16, council was left at
odds on how to proceed. While some
councillors were disappointed with the
lack of promotion related to Strathmore
and, despite hosting the Canadian Badlands Tourism Conference, said theyve
seen little benefit to the town even
having been left off the kiosks maps,
and information centres - other council
members were more reluctant to dismiss the partnership so quickly. Recognizing the possible future potential
of working jointly with over 60 other
communities, some felt by addressing
their concerns and through better communications, Strathmore as well as the
Canadian Badlands could reap greater
rewards.
Administration was therefore instructed to send a letter to the organization detailing councils concerns. As a
result, the Canadian Badlands reached
out to Councillor Denise Peterson, who
presented a notice of motion on Jan.
13 to bring the motion that council approve the Canadian Badlands requisition.
Im going to speak against it now
and Ill speak against it when it comes
in front of us in two weeks, said Councillor Rocky Blokland at the Jan. 13
meeting. I see very little benefits to belong to the Canadian Badlands. Weve
had these discussions now for four or
five years, and other than the fact that
they held a conference here last year, I
see nothing coming out of this that will
help us.
The letter received by the Canadian
Badlands included questions regarding
Strathmore being omitted on the kiosk
maps, information centres and on signage of the periphery of the community, membership benefits to Strathmore,
and the potential future value of the
membership.
In response, Canadian Badlands executive Director Brad Tucker informed
Peterson that Strathmore had not been
a member of the organization at the
time the decision was made regarding signage and said to accommodate
Strathmore after joining could have
cost up to $30,000. In an interview
with the Strathmore Times, Tucker confirmed that the board had previously
approved matching grant funding to
the maximum of $5,000 to put signage
on the periphery of the community of
Strathmore to indicate partnership with
the Canadian Badlands. Furthermore,
Strathmore is already featured on their
website, Canadian Badlands map, and
new pamphlet. The organization is also

Garnett eyes another

provincial crown
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Strathmore curler Scott Garnett
continues to live out his dream of
playing in the Brier as part of the
Calgary-based Team Yablonski.
The team - which consists of Garnett, Kevin Yablonski, Michael Roy
and Matthew McDonald - won a C
qualifier over Airdrie 9-3 to earn a
spot in the mens provincials, and
could go to Canadian curlings top
event, if achieving another win.
Were going into it with the
idea that we know its for the Brier, said Garnett. We want to give
it our best go. Our goal is playoffs. Were not going in there not
to win. Its just not a very fun way
to go. We just have to bring our
A game and hope that its on our
side.
He added that the key to their
success has been their aggressive
approach which has given them
the chance to get as many points
as they could early on in games.
We strive with rocks in play,
said Garnett. I guess were balls to
the wall in a way. We love putting
things in front to raise them up.
I think as a younger team were
tempted to get away from that because you want to play more defensive.
Garnett is no stranger to the big
stages as he began his curling career with a provincial appearance
back in 2006 where he, along with
other local curler Derek Clark,
won provincials at the juvenile
level where they earned a berth in
the Optimist Internationals where
they lost in the final and a spot in
the Canada Winter Games.
In 2008, he curled for the junior
mens team and made it to provincials, losing in the final and the
chance to compete in the Junior
Nationals. It was there, after the
team fizzled, where Garnett had
to make a decision to continue his
curling career or finish his business degree at Acadia University.
I always wanted to go out east
for school, said Garnett. Acadia
was my dream from high school.
I made the decision to move out

East in 2010 to pursue my degree.

I got accepted into school and
started looking for a team. I went
online and I looked at who won
the province the year before and
went straight to the team that lost
because I knew what it felt like to
lose.
While at Acadia he joined a
Nova Scotia juniors team in 2010.
The team didnt have much success at the start of the year, but
things turned around when they
qualified into the last spot in the
Last Chance.
At provincials we fired off seven wins, said Garnett. We lost in
the A final, then won the B and C
finals. We lost our first game on a
pick rock and in the second game
it came down to last rock and won.
Then we made it to nationals. That
was an awesome way to cap off
my junior career.
The team went to nationals in
Quebec but lost out in going to
the playoff round.
Other events that Team Yablonski will participate in this season
will be a Northern Alberta Spiel
and playdowns.
Provincials will be held from
Feb. 10-14 in Camrose.

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

For the third time in three weeks, the
Okotoks Bisons took advantage of their
opportunities against the Wheatland
Kings and came away with an 8-3 win in
Strathmore on Jan. 23.
Of course it was a tough loss, said
Kings forward Tyler Rivest. Eight goals,
all coming from around the center of the
ice in front of the net. Just a few mental lapses that can easily be fixed up and
well work on it this week at practice and
hopefully beat them in that fourth and final game.
He added that they were inconsistent in
their defensive zone coverage and were
on the wrong side of unfortunate bounces.
Our defensive zone needs a little more
work, said Rivest. Two of their goals
were tips, so easy fixes, taking their sticks
away. After a loss like that you just have
to press the restart button and get back

However, Rivest said there were positives to take from the game as they were
able to score two of their goals in around
the front of the net where the Oktoks
Bisons were getting their valuable scoring chances. He thinks they need to be
present in the areas where opportunities
arise to get more offense while working
towards less shots around the perimeter.
With only two weeks left in the season,
Rivest hopes they secure a decent spot in
the standings and have the home-ice advantage heading into the playoffs.

Strathmore goaltender Ethan Rycroft and defenseman Mitch Desserre have come into their own

Rycroft said with the bigger players in his face

Funk making an
impact with Raiders
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Strathmores own Natalie Funk is in the midst
of her first season of girls hockey with the Rocky
Mountain Raiders bantam triple-A and is steadily
improving her game.
Its really good, said Funk. Im improving a lot
with my shooting and being smart with the puck.
Ive had to work myself a lot harder because its a
much higher level than Ive ever played before.
The biggest difference she has noticed going
from boys hockey in Strathmore to an elite level
of girls hockey is the concentration needed as the
forwards bear down faster.
She felt the team has met their goals this far into
the season, which helped with team bonding.
We really wanted to come together as a team because lots of us didnt know each other at the start
and I think weve done that, said Funk, a reliable
defender. We always try to win and we want to
make it to playoffs and have lots of success.
Funk added Head Coach Dan Talls message, of
always giving it a 110 per cent and not giving up
no matter what the score is, has added consistency
to the team.
The Boston Bruin fan said her most memorable
moment this season is when she scored her first
goal on Jan. 8 against the Calgary Rangers.

Wheatland Warriors have adapted very well to the

triple-A level and praised them for what they were
able to bring to the table for the Raiders this season.
Ethans biggest thing is he battles, said Kluner.
Although hes had his ups and downs this year,
hes always passionate about what he does and
gets upset with himself when he doesnt have success.
He describe Rycrofts style as a hybrid Dominik
Hasek, saying he scrambles in a way that gets him
into tough spots but recovers well.
He has also been enthused with Desserres attitude, which he thinks will set him up for success.
For him, his maturity level is quite high, said
Kluner. That always helps with the adjusting period, ups and downs and just the understanding
of the game expectations from the coaching staff.
Kluner would like to see his team get to the Westerns by having success in the playoffs and building
off of last years championship team.
The Raiders currently sit second in the Ram
South Division with a record of 18-7-3.

Tall said that Funk, who battles hard, has been a

force for the team this season.
Shes improved enormously since the beginning
of the year, said Tall. Usually first-year players
struggle a little bit, but Natalie hasnt had a problem adjusting to this level of play.
He added that there is an advantage crossing over
from boys to girls hockey as the players battle for
the pucks harder. However their intensity in puck
handling becomes a factor.
Thats something weve worked with Natalie on,
said Tall. Shes getting much better at handling the
puck after coming over to the girls game and bringing across the advantages that she did in battling
hard and competing. Shes been a great addition for
us this season.
The Raiders sit second in the division, a mere
two-points behind the Calgary Rangers.

Braves tame Tigers

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Braves have picked up points in
five of their last six games, with their latest game
being a 6-4 win over a tough West Central Tigers at
the Strathmore Family Centre on Jan. 24.
We had a lot of scoring chances and we buried
a few, said head coach Carl Knudsen. Once we
get to work in the offensive zone, we sustain pressure for minutes on end. Its just defensively we get
running around a little bit and we start losing control of the defensive zone was our biggest thing, a
couple mental lapses really.
Knudsen said he was concerned more with the team giving up too many chances as a
result of breakdowns in their
own zone.
He credits the play of goaltender Daniel Hauser for making key saves in the third period to prevent the Tigers from
gaining any sustained pressure.
He bailed us out when we needed it, said
Knudsen. They had a few good scoring opportunities and he was there. Other than that, we just put
the puck down in their end and thats the best way
to kill time.
Ray Warrack scored three goals, while Kobe Gosling, Adam Kirkpatrick and Joel Romano provided
the offense in the win.
On Jan. 22 the Braves hosted the Okotoks Oilers
at the Strathmore Family Centre and squandered an
early 4-3 third period lead en route to a 5-4 loss.
Kirkpatrick, Gosling, Trey Gillis and Philip Raycroft scored in the loss.
The local peewee double-A team will get a rematch with Okotoks on Jan. 30 at 5:15 p.m. on the
road before hosting Red Deer Parkland on Jan. 31
at 7:30 p.m. in Hussar.
CHIEFS TAKE THREE OF FOUR POINTS
The Wheatland Chiefs have been lacking offensive production as of late and started the weekend
off on Jan. 23 with a 2-2 tie with the CBHA Black-

hawks, but were able to find the back of the net

often with a 9-6 win in Okotoks on Jan. 24.
Assistant Coach Keenan Desmet said despite the
team playing well in both games, it was vital for the
team to find consistency after a recent slump.
It was real important just because weve been
on a slide after Christmas, said Desmet. I think
this weekend we pulled through two games which
was good and weve seen lots of up-turn in the last
couple of days.
He said the boys knew how crucial the game
in Okotoks was in terms of the positioning in the
standings and thought the team followed through
with a strong effort in regaining first
place.
We came out flying, probably the
two best periods weve played all season long, said Desmet. We were up
7-2 and just let the foot off the pedal
in third and then we had two penalties they scored on. We can score,
now we just have to consistently do
it.
Wacy Sandum and Chris Rebeyka led the way with two goals each, while Lucas
Muenchrath, Robert Butterwick , Ryan Bell, Jason
Hobson and Kody Hammond supplied one each in
the win.
Hammond and Butterwick scored in the tie.
The Chiefs will hit the road on Jan. 29 to Medicine Hat with puck drop at 8:15 p.m., before facing
the Foothills Bisons in High River on Jan. 31 at
4:30 p.m.
TOURNEY WINNERS
The Wheatland Warriors won the Olds Tournament by beating the Calgary Wranglers 5-1 in the
finals, in an event where they finished with a record of 4-1.
We were kind of plagued with injuries coming
off the last couple of weeks but everybody showed
up and we had a good team effort, said head
coach Cody Brown. We told the boys we came all
the way down there and it would be great to come
out on top there. Thats what youre obviously gunning to do and they brought forth a good effort and

Lacrosse Winter camp helping player development

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Strathmore Lacrosses fifth annual winter camp
is underway, allowing returning players to come
and warm up their skills for the upcoming season, and giving new players the opportunity to
become comfortable with the game.
Its gives us a chance to get a stick in the kids
hands, said Scott Fargey, Strathmore Lacrosse
president. Instead of our evaluations being the
first practices now theyre coming in and
theyre already warmed up. Its a great opportunity for a lot of new kids to come out and play
without being in an environment where they have
no idea whats going on in try-outs.
Fargey said the focus is different between the
younger groups in tykes and mini-tykes where
many cant catch or throw and need to be taught

how to hold the stick properly, as well as throw

the ball. In the older levels the focus is on body
position and how to hold your stick to get a
quicker release.
We hope by the time all the kids are done here
that they can throw and catch, said Fargey. Ive
coached bantam and peewee kids who try to run
a practice and youve got one or two kids that
cant catch the ball. You cant do a practice in lacrosse unless every kid on that team can catch
and throw. We really focus on that.
He added that the ideal goal is to get kids to
play up the highest level of lacrosse they are capable of.
The camp is open all winter to players of all levels of lacrosse and is held every Saturday at Trinity
Christian Academy free of charge.

WHO ARE OUR NEIGHBOURS?

Having lived in Strathmore over 20
years now, I have seen a great deal
of change in the community and in
the faces here. There are still lots of
the old familiar people, but there are
many new faces, filling the many
new communities and homes, and
connecting at community events, in
business places, at school, or even
just walking down the street.
It used to take a lot longer to
grocery shop because you knew
everyone in the CO-OP or IGA and
stopped to talk to almost everyone.
But we have grown. We are blessed
to have neighbors from around the
world living here today. We are
blessed to have people from all
ages and spheres in our community.
The challenge is, as we grow, we
lose track of that simple reality of
Who are neighbors are
If you follow the news, you will have
no doubt heard all the concerns
being raised about the economy
and the state of the world, and the
impact it is having on so many people. We may be a small community
but we are not exempt from that
impact.
We also are blessed with reasons
to celebrate. People celebrating
milestones, how many community
members do we have that are over
100 years, or have been married for

60 or more years.
As we continue to grow and go
through the times and events that
are part of being a community, we
have the ability to make the diversity and growth of our community
a true blessing. That can and will
happen as we get to know our
neighbors again. To stand as one,
for the celebrations, as well as
standing together, when there is a
need.
I encourage you to get to know your
neighbors. Start saying hi to people
at the gas bar when you are filling
your car. Greet the people you pass
when you are walking your dog.
Talk to the people in the checkout
line at Walmart. Step up and share
when you can help someone or see
a need. And I pray none of us would
be afraid to call out when we have
a need, because, after all, we are
neighbors.
Jesus told the members of his
community, Love God, love one
another, as I have loved you!
As we get to know one another in
new and various ways, a we renew
our sense of community and neighbor, it can only be a blessing and a
strength for our town. I look forward
to meeting more and more of you

The Crowther Memorial Junior High
School Cougars combined Grade 6 and
7 girls team, the Grade 7/8 girls and
Grade 7 boys basketball teams saw
a tremendous upside in their teams
games after their home tournaments on
Jan. 22 and 23
For the Grade 6 and 7 girls team, it
was the first opportunity for many of
them to experience the game of basketball where with each touch of the ball
they became better players.
We didnt do anything in the game
that weve been practicing, said coach
Carley Blaseg.
But by the second and third game
they really started remembering plays
we worked on. They were remembering to use their dribble and use the

fundamentals that they know and were

able to do and translate them into the
game.
The Grade 7 and 8 girls team began
the tournament with a tight defensive
battle against Calgarys Clarence Sansom School, and were able to learn
from that and opened up their game
more as the tournament went on.
They started spreading out, said
Blaseg
They started doing what weve been
doing in practices. Defensively they
started boxing them out more, closing out better like weve been doing in
practice. By the second and third game
they really started to execute that.
Blasegs hope is for the older group
to build on the tournament experience
by playing more of a team game and
tighter defense.
Meanwhile, the Grade 7 split squad

boys team previously only had one

game under their belts this season and
the tournament was a good chance for
them to compete against other teams in
their own school.
Each one of these boys developed
way better than we thought they would
be, said head coach Todd Kennedy.
Kennedy said the offense was much
better than the defense, where there is
still work to be done, but what he really liked was that the team listened well
and responded well to the pressure.
The energy level kept getting better
and better, said Kennedy.
They ran faster and were more excited to be out there. Tournaments are a
really great practice for them and were
looking forward to seeing what they do
in the next one.
One team finished at the bottom and
the other lost in the consolation final.

WHITNEY,
Dr. Norman

It is with sadness as well as a profound gratitude for a rich life, that

we announce the passing of our
father, brother, and friend, Norman John Whitney
on January 6, 2016. Norman was greatly comforted in his last few days in the company of his
family and many friends, all the while warmed by
his Montreal Canadiens blanket, at the Veterans
Health Unit in Fredericton, NB. The family wish
to acknowledge the ongoing support of his many
health care providers, and most recently the exceptional care and love that he received while at
the Veterans Health Unit.
Norman was born a prairie boy in Langdon, Alberta on July 24, 1925, where he grew to be a
man who knew how to farm, how to play hockey,
how to soap train rails, how to catch gophers, and
most of all, how to live in a way that cultivated
optimism and demonstrated great respect for the
world around him. After serving in the Navy and
then receiving his BSc at the University of Alberta,
he proceeded to head east to gain his MSc (University of Western Ontario) and PhD (University of
Toronto). Norman immediately began his plant
science career at a research station in Harrow,
Southern Ontario.
Norman found his lovely bride, Karen, in London,
Ontario, and they soon married and began to raise
a family. Getting the tap on the shoulder as his
calling to the ministry, he continued his eastward
trek to Montreal where he would work in the field
of science while achieving his Master of Divinity at
McGill University. Ever a curious explorer, Norm
then continued further East where he established
a long career at both the University of New Brunswick as well as with the United Church of Canada.
Teacher and minister to so many during his full
and colorful life, Norman was loved by many. He
raised his family to understand the tangible applications of love, acceptance, inclusion, and
communitywhile never wavering in his diehard
commitment to social justice. His loving heart and
great wisdom helped mend and restore many a
broken situation, especially in his counselling
practice. Norman was a master at building connections and relationships, and specifically he
excelled in bridging the worlds of science and
spirituality. Respected in many circles, Norman received his most notable recognition in 2006 as recipient of the Governor Generals Order of Canada.

May met her soul mate Damien Corbiell and was
married on April 20, 1950. It was on the family
farm, north of Cluny, that they raised three children
Barry, Heather and Alan. Mom was an avid reader,
loved to garden, and was also involved with many
community groups, namely the CWL and sang for
many years with the choir. They lived on the farm
until 1987 when they retired into Strathmore. May
leaves behind her husband Damien, the love of
